I Think It'd Be Fun To Create A Big Post Of Resources To Get Into Older Folk Music

i think it'd be fun to create a big post of resources to get into older folk music

"do you like political music? listen to xyz"

"do you like faster music, slower music, waltz?, listen to xyz"

"do you like bluegrass, country, gospel, newer folk, jazz? listen to xyz"

but i also think it would be fun to curate personalized folk playlists for individuals who ask for them based on music in or adjacent to the genre that they already like

if they like taylor swift maybe they'd like Joan baez or joni mitchell or jean ritchie or whatever.

if they like colter walls, maybe they'd like woody guthrie, ramblin' jack elliott, or cisco houston. idk!

Anyway, if anyone's interested in that, lmk here, and I'll set something up!

Day 1 - Up the Sides and Down the Middle

September's here and so is the first fiddle tune!

You can listen and download the track (and all the other ones coming out this month) for free, here:

I'm doing 30 of these, one a day, for Refugee Action! It's gonna be a lot of work but I can't wait - I'm so happy to be on this journey.

If you like the music, you can sponsor me below and help out Refugee Action:

Race for Refugees - 30 Folk Tunes, 30 Days
JustGiving
Help Kofi Young raise money to support Refugee Action

Refugee Action provide expert advice to those struggling with the UK's unfair and purposely convoluted asylum system, and support people with refugee status settle into their homes and communities.

If you could help out even a little, it would mean a whole lot! Thank you!

hey! do you have a folk song that you want to know the history of? just ask me about it, and I'll make a whole post dedicated to its history, earlier versions, why it was made, why it got popular, etc.

my plan is to post aesthetic pictures of Bob dylan for fellow queers to reblog to lure them into following my blog, where they will have to learn the history of folk music as a a traditional tool for protest and labor and the many leftist origins of folk and the ways this is often overlooked and erased especially when it comes to black artists

oh hey, unrelated, check out this cool song by paul robeson in 1924 :)

or this rendition of Strange Fruit by Josh White (1964)

or this song by Odetta in 1957

or this song by lead belly in 1936

or this Gospel song by the Freedom Singers in 1961

or this song 1961

or this song by Nina Simone in 1965
