This Facebook post went viral in Gaza for the saddest and most heartbreaking reasons imaginable. The author, Wa’ad, simply wrote, “What happened on the night you lost your family? Where were you?” The response was overwhelming. Thousands of comments poured in, filled with stories and testimonies from those who had lost loved ones. People recounted the last moments with their spouses, parents, or children as they died in their arms: a wife’s last phone call with her husband, a father who left to bring a tent or food but returned to find his family gone, a family that left and returned to find the mom or dad gone. An endless stream of stories unfolded, full of pain, injustice, mourning, and grief. This is just a small glimpse of what the people in Gaza have experienced and continue to endure.

“Our story, despite its intense misery, was not unique. As a journalist who has worked multiple times on documentary books about the previous wars on the Gaza Strip, I had read similar accounts many times without ever feeling they were my own. It's as if each of us unconsciously believes that life, for some reason, will spare us from such experiences, as if they only happen to others, perhaps because the mind rejects the possibility due to the sheer horror involved.

On the night of January 15, 2024, my four sisters and I were lying on the floor amidst our sleeping children in a room located in the middle of the house. We had sought refuge there, believing it to be the safest spot, thinking it might be out of the range of tank shells. Next to me were my three children, Yaman, Nasser, and my infant, Rayan, who was born during the temporary truce and was then only 51 days old. Opposite me were my sisters. Unlike previous nights, my sister Rama, who later would become a martyr, insisted that we stay awake. She made us a cup of Nescafé, and we sat talking until our laughter rose louder than it had throughout the war.

One second was the barrier between two lives. One second pierced through time, leaving us stunned by the enormity of what was happening. All I remember is looking into the eyes of my sister Rama while talking to her, then closing my eyes as a red light penetrated the room. The sounds followed, and when I opened my eyes, I found myself in a grave, surrounded on all sides, with sand and debris filling my face and mouth.

At that moment, I thought only that I was on the brink of death. I began reciting the Shahada, asking God to accept me and my family, whom I believed had all preceded me in death. I didn't scream then, nor was I very scared, as a strange tranquility descended upon my heart by God's mercy. In those moments, I suddenly heard the voice of my little son, Nasser (6 years old), the only one of my children who survived. He was crying and screaming, trying to grab the tips of my fingers, the only part of me he could see. I had fallen to the floor below, with the room's ceiling above me, and Nasser was sitting on top of it, sheltered by a piece of furniture. I started calling out to my son, trying to calm and reassure him that I was okay, until my brother and the neighbors heard his voice half an hour later and rescued him. He then guided them to my location.

I emerged from the rubble by a divine miracle after I began to suffocate. Just as the sand filled the hole, I felt a hand digging through the sand and settling on my mouth and nose. I heard them saying, "Preserve her breath." I emerged, only to be met with successive shocks.

First, I learned that I had lost my beloved sisters, Ruba and Rama. Then came the greatest blow with the death of my eldest child, Yaman (7 years old), the joy and soul of my home, and my infant Rayan. I later learned that Rayan had fallen from the room into the neighbor's house. Beautiful Rayan slept in my arms the whole night as a cold, lifeless body. I wrapped him in a piece of clothing I was wearing due to his body's extreme cold. We sat for 12 hours that felt like nights and months, waiting for the ambulance to take them to the hospital. As for little Rama, she remained under the rubble for 12 hours because it was difficult to retrieve her from beneath a column that had fallen on her head. Rama was brought out from under the debris the next day, with a piece of cashew in her mouth that life didn't give her a chance to swallow, which the rescuers removed from her mouth, stained with blood.

Half a year has passed since that bloody night, and I still see its details as if they are happening right now, as if it is a dream we are waiting to wake up from someday. May God magnify our hearts' reward, increase our patience, and unite us with them in the gardens of bliss!”
