i agree! it’s so frustrating that we constantly review the same old texts over and over again—for instance, we read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote this year, and yeah, it was fun to analyze, and it was wonderfully written, but it’s cultural significance feels really dated. And there was a lot of focus on formatting. the "classics" that we read are almost always realistic fiction, wholly english/american literature that doesn’t carry much relevance anymore. Not that they’re bad! but i would also like to read Tolkien’s books or Wells’ books or even something simpler like Roald Dahl or Dr. Seuss; more recent and modern writers that we are familiar with that became very popular for reasons that are relatable today.
I wish that English teachers would actually teach us from newer texts too. Like yes, the old ones are good to look at, Shakespeare's a cool writer but also current texts would be good too, like some times, please
