Like the amount of lies In this one extract (crazy) like shes so unreliable she doesn’t even know.

does anybody else feel the anger

the way this whole episode delivered absolutely everything we hoped for in terms of the characterisation of janines mom from all that build up breadcrumbed throughout past episodes. it was so immediately obvious the kind of life janine has had with this woman. how there's the face she shows other people and the face she shows her daughters. how affection is transactional and only ever earned through giving pieces of herself away over and over and never being seen or acknowledged until she's useful, being an object her mother created, and that's the end of her mother's part of the transaction between them, no obligation to love her - even dismissing losing her other daughter as "can't win 'em all" because she's no use to her anymore. "you didn't leave any messages", but no, we've seen those messages on screen: they were unread. she just lies straight to her face, downplays her dismissal of her reaching out, lies about what barbara did and said in that room, because to suggest otherwise would make her guilty of something. she knows what she does is wrong, but it's easier to lie than fix any of it, to just exploit the same old patterns, exploit her daughter's yearning to be loved.

the immediate throughline of every time janine has gone above and beyond to be a fixer at that school, to misguidedly try and be seen by her colleagues/friends and earn affection from them in extreme displays of heroicism, in much the same way, even though she never had to do anything to be seen by them, they've seen her all along, she just can't see that because they aren't saying it in words, that the affection is just automatic and inherent and subconscious because she's a good person and good at her job - why should they need to say it? but it's foreign to her for affection to not only appear when it's performative or earned for something. she doesn't know - or didn't know, but has now begun to learn - how to fully recognise other forms of love she's never had before. barbara giving her time and advice, melissa showing her how to cook and buying her class those books, jacob getting involved in all her schemes and the one we know she spends the most time with outside of school, ava giving her little glimpses into her life nobody else gets to see, gregory... well. gregory.

but the strength shes taken from her little found family, and especially barbara - who is such a beautiful, perfect foil for everything vanetta has made janine endure - helped her realise her own worth enough to finally set a boundary, to put her own needs first instead of anyone elses, when usually she places herself dead last. what a huge, huge thing. i'm so proud of her.
