Nobody But Us

nobody but us

a/n : a very short one shot, sweet and sad I would say?

"You're in the wind, I'm in the water

Nobody's son, nobody's daughter"

Heavy breaths mingled one with the other when the couple sank onto the mattress completely without strength. They were short and uneven, dissolving into the darkness of the dingy motel room where they were now hiding.

Not a second passed, and Jake, still half unconscious and drunk from their previous pleasure, turned so that he was lying on his stomach, his head on her naked breasts. There was nothing vulgar about it anymore. They were completely naked, the rough skin of his cheek rubbing against the softness of her chest as he calmed his shaky breathing and listened to her accelerated heartbeat, which was his favorite lullaby.

Her heart squeezed violently at how he snuggled into her body. How his raven-black hair and warm breath tickled her exposed cleavage. At that moment, he did not resemble the man he had been just a few moments ago. Back then he always had to have everything under control, which he was obsessed with. He pounded into her with his whole body, his movements, kisses or strong grips were not sweet or gentle. They were lustful, wild and raw.

Now, however, he was none other than a lost boy who lacked another person. Her presence. Her touch. Tender whispers.

When it was usually he who kept her safe now she felt the roles were reversed. He was lying on top of her, so vulnerable after they had once again managed to escape the police and FBI. Now he wasn't the evil and dangerous hack that everyone had warned her about. He was not a person she had ever feared in any way. Yet when she chose him, everyone turned on her. But something about him made her feel a little more alive and a far less lost. Even though she only had him left.

Feeling that this time she must be the one to make him feel safe, she brushed her fingertips against his cheek and combed through his hair. Gently, as if he was the most precious treasure she just held in her hands.

He was.

When he felt her fingers, he flinched. He had not been touched with such gentleness since his childchood. He was no stranger to woman and had felt their hands on all parts of his body, but her touch made him feel like he belonged some place.

Just as she had written him a few months earlier even though he didn't believe it at the time - his place was by her side. For better or for worse. The MC had seen his worst side, all the atrocities he had done to save his freedom and his life, but she was still by his side nonetheless. She did not leave him. Throughout his life, he knew well the meaning of only one word - leaving. Everyone was leaving. After a while, even he did. So why not her?

He looked at her, and she looked like an angel. An angel that God had sent to save him. He didn't deserve her. He knew it so well, but her love was addictive. She returned his gaze, and his lips quivered.

– I love you. – he whispered, searching her eyes. He looked very pale, scared and even a little hopeful.

His heart melted and a flock of butterflies appeared in his stomach as he saw her eyes light up with sparks of ordinary human happiness. He knew then that God had sent her for him, so that the light of her eyes would illuminate his darkness, which sometimes seemed to overpower him.

"Love is a curse" he heard a demonic whisper in the back of his head that belonged to his past.

And now I was drowning in it.

They looked deeply into each other's eyes, tired of people, the world and all the other things that had failed them so much. They were just two demaged people, trying to heal each other with love.

He found her in every breath of air that made life possible, while she saw his reflection in every sheet of water she came across.

For apart from each other, they had no one else.

Summer Love

Chapter 1: California

author's note: hi! it will be a short, light and pleasant story about two teenagers in love. hope you like it <3

I will never forget the moment when I first met him.

June 25, 2014

I was not well disposed to this vacation.

It was my first time to fly alone to the United States, specifically California. My mother decided that I could use two months of respite away from home. I know she also wanted to get some rest on her own. The last period was not the lightest for us.

I didn't know California very well. I had only been there once as a small child to visit my aunt. It was there that I was to spend this vacation. On the California beaches in the company of my older cousin - Jane.

But my earlier indecision and uncertainty passed as the plane with me on board soared into the clouds. With bated breath, I watched the receding land through the window and welcomed the sky. I was the type of dreamer rocking in the clouds.

My attention was caught by a couple sitting in front of me. The girl was apparently overcome by panic, causing her to cling to the man's arm. She probably had a fear of heights. The boy calmed her down, drew her to his chest and soothingly played with her hair.

Ugh, love.

It was a real nightmare. Watching all the couples in love while I never held hands with the other person. Not in a romantic way, anyway. In truth, I kept telling myself that I was only 16 and my whole life was ahead of me, but.... Almost every friend of mine was in a relationship or had already ended one. Why didn't anyone pay attention to me? Was I too ugly, insufficient, stupid? After all, guys like stupid girls. Then they can feel smarter, right?

The truth was that I wanted love. Passion. Adventure. Excitement. I wanted to lose myself in someone as much as possible, to feel the butterflies in my stomach even if it had to end in a broken heart and weeping nights. I wanted to feel loved. Wanted.

However, when I left the plane and felt the Californian wind in my hair a wide smile dawned on my face. I couldn't just think about my failures. It was vacation time, and I was going to make the most of it.

To get to my aunt's house, I had to take another hour by bus. I can't count the number of times I cursed Google Maps for almost not finding the bus stop and consequently almost missing the bus. When I ran onto the bus loaded with people I was sweaty and probably red in the face. All the seats were occupied except one, next to a black-haired boy who was leaning his head against the window. He had headphones in his ears due to which he didn't hear my question if I could sit down. I took that as a 'yes.'

He was wearing a black T-shirt and blue loose jeans. When I took a seat next to him he raised his head and looked in my direction. His eyes were like ice: cold and relentless. Despite this, I sent him a slight smile, but the expression on his face did not change one bit. He was looking into the window again, watching the sights beyond.

Asshole.

To my surprise, he got off at the same stop as me. I didn't have time to register anything when I felt strong arms pull me toward them and suffocate me with their embrace.

–MC! It's been so long since we've seen each other. – Jane said loudly, excitedly – How you have grown!

From behind my cousin's back I saw a black-haired boy walking straight ahead. Only now I could look how tall he was.

– Why are you silent? – Jane moved away from me and looked in the direction I was looking. – Ooh, I already know. My little cousin is growing up. – she said with a mean smile to which I answered her with a firm punch on the shoulder

– Yeah, I missed you too Jane.

* * *

In the evening of that day, at my aunt's request, I went to the store to buy ice cream while she and Jane were preparing dinner. The navigation, by the way, completely sucked. Or it was me with crappy field orientation.

No, it was definitely the navigation's fault.

After hitting several dead ends, I finally arrived at the store. I looked with undisguised fascination at all the sweets and snacks familiar from American movies that I had dreamed so much about as a child. The place seemed to be a paradise for preschoolers. And well, for me too.

After a good ten minutes or so, I reached the freezers, which contained dozens of different ice creams. At the moment when I wanted to open one of them someone preceded me, and I completely not hearing someone standing next to me, almost jumped up in fear. I immediately took my hand away and raised my gaze encountering the blue irises of the bus boy.

The boy raised an eyebrow, then selected a chocolate ice cream and was already about to pass me by when some kind of frenzied energy took over my body.

– You again. – I spoke up, and my tone was friendly

The boy turned around and sent me a confused gaze.

– Do I know you? – He asked sounding completely uninterested

– You're so nice. – I snorted, however, I didn't lose the slight smile from my face – I'm MC. You already know me. And hey are you angry or something for sitting down with you on the bus?

– Angry? Why? – he furrowed his eyebrows

– Your face says more than your mouth.

– This is my every-day face. – he replied and tried to walk away, but I followed him

Christ, why didn't I give that asshole a break?

– Grumpy then.

– I'm not grumpy. Not everyone can smile all the time. Except you.

– I don't smile all the time! – I stated indignantly to which he finally sent me a doubtful look

– You smiled at the jellybeans and then at the ice cream.

– So you already saw me when I entered the store? – my smile widened which only proved his thesis. He rolled his eyes, but I could have sworn that a soft blush appeared on his cheeks. – You didn't tell me what your name is.

– Mother didn't tell you that you shouldn't introduce yourself to strangers?

– Oh come on. Look at me, and look at you. – I said in a sour tone, since he was probably able to do a lot more harm to me than I to him – Okay, you figured me out. My van is behind the store where there are no cameras.

– It's obvious you're not from here. – he sighed – Behind there are cameras.

I waved my hand at that, and my attention was caught by the dessert he chose.

– So you are team chocolate? – I asked subconsciously slapping myself in the face.

If he wasn't he wouldn't have taken such ice cream, idiot.

– Where did you get such an idea, Sherlock? – he replied, and his question rubbed with irony

I smiled inwardly. The mysterious stranger, however, possessed a sense of humor.

I ignored the phrase that came to my lips that I prefer vanilla ice cream, and opposites supposedly attract. And so I made a fool of myself enough times.

– Why do you need so many energy drinks? You have leaks and a war is coming, so are you stocking up? – I asked, pointing my finger at the five drinks he had in his basket

– Sometimes they come in handy when you don't want to fall asleep, you know? – he replied, and when he saw that I had already opened my mouth to question him he added – Do you know just how annoying you are?

– Not annoying enough to have you ignore me, apparently. – I replied to which he rolled his eyes again – Okay, I know how to make you feel better. I'll tell you a joke I heard on the bus while you were listening to music.

He started to protest that he didn't need a humor upgrade at all, but the joke was really funny.

– What do you call a dog that can do magic?

– Well what? - he sighed and I clenched my lips tightly to keep from laughing

– A labra-cadabrador.

I started giggling which made an old lady passing by look at me strangely. I probably looked like a mentally ill person in front of the boy who stared at me as if I were lunatic. This joke was so stupid that it was laughable. I looked at the black-haired boy with a doubtful look to see if he really understood it.

– Not a dog fan?

– Not a bad jokes fan. – he replied and this time I rolled my eyes

– Well I have another one. What did the sushi say to the bee?

– Enlighten me. – he replied with resignation in his voice

– Wasabi? – I made a strange gesture with my hands that I saw somewhere on the Internet along with this joke

The boy looked at me for a moment, then quickly turned his head away. However, he did not manage to hide from me the small smile that appeared on his face.

– You smiled back! Don't even try to deny it. – he turned to me again, and this time a wry smile was painted on his face. I raised an eyebrow. – So you're a sushi fan?

– You got me. – He replied, then stood in the checkout line. Damn, I didn't realize we had gone through the whole store. – And you seem to have forgotten something.

I looked at him with incomprehension, and when he happily took out his chocolate ice cream from the cart I became dumbfounded. Damn, I forgot what I came here for.

– Oh right, ice cream.

I corrected the chain I was wearing and started walking away from the cash register walking backwards causing me to almost bump into an older man. I patted myself on the forehead and turned around to walk like a normal, sane person. Then I heard his voice.

– Jake. That's my name. – he said. A smile uncontrollably affected my face, and I bit my lip almost clapping and jumping up. I felt so light and happy, because already on my first day here I met someone new and... interesting? Yes, I think that's the right term.

I didn't expect that, no-longer-a-stranger-Jake would be waiting for me outside the store and would walk me all the way to the house.

And I definitely didn't expect that this was just the beginning of our summer.

Summer Love

Chapter 2: I Ain't Worried

Previous <-

I'll never forget the first time I saw Jake shirtless. Seriously.

July 7, 2014

The end of the first week of July attacked California with a huge heat wave. It was practically impossible to survive on the streets, and the only place of solace was the calm ocean water cooling down the heated body. Of course it was temporary, but always something.

Jane and I were there practically every day, but today my cousin was not at home. She went to her boyfriend's for the night, leaving me alone and withered by the cosmic temperature.

I was damned bored. Therefore, I didn't waste a minute more but headed to my aunt's neighbor's house. Namely, Jake's mom.

I bit my lip and started knocking on the door. In my spirit I prayed that his mom would not be home. Actually it didn't matter; I went out with my him every few days. Most of these meetings consisted of evening rides in his car, which he got for his 18th birthday, and our arguments or teasing.

I felt good in his company. Despite the apparent difference in our characters, we got along ... quite well. Jake was a great guy and I envied people who had him on a daily basis.

After a few minutes, the door swung open and in the threshold I saw a sleepy Jake with disheveled hair wearing a white oversize T-shirt and red and black plaid pants.

And just maybe my heart started beating a little faster at that sight.

– Christ, MC, are you haunting me even in the morning already? – he said, and his voice was hoarse. Despite his words, he opened the door wider, letting me in.

– Nice to see you too, Jake. – I replied, entering the cooler room, which immediately gave me relief – Besides, it's already after 1 pm, ignorant.

The boy closed the door and yawned completely ignoring my comments about his biological clock.

– May I know what urgent matter sent you here at such an inhuman hour?

– Do you want to go to the lake? - I asked directly, making puppy dog eyes to convince him. The boy, however, seemed unconcerned.

– With the fishes? No, thank you.

– Wait, you're scared of fish? – I asked trying not to laugh. Jake seemed too serious to be afraid of such things.

– They're just so..slimy – he confessed while shrugging in disgust which made me giggle. I guess he wasn't fully awake.

– Slimy?

– Slimy. – he replied, pulling out an energy drink from the refrigerator

– Do you even still have internal organs? – I walked over and tapped on his chest, where his heart should be. I looked at him with feigned seriousness to give him the tragic information. – It's not beating. These shits have gnawed them all out of you.

The Jake's hand tapped my forehead forcing me to move away. My face lit up again with a smile. Damn, how could it be that smiling was easier with him?

– Do you know we're going to go on that beach anyway? – I asked with confidence in my voice. Seeing his resolute expression I rolled my eyes – Oh, come on, grumpy face, it will be fun!

– Absolutely not.

* * *

– Why do you always manage to persuade me? – he groaned, combing his hair with his hand while I spread a blanket on the sand – This is why I hate summer.

– Personal charm, my dear. – I almost sang out, sitting down on the material, and Jake joined in a moment later. The sun was shining straight into my face, which already seemed sweaty enough. – Ugh, I'm so hot!

– Loving your confidence. – he muttered accusingly causing me to punch him in the arm

– Oh shut up. – I grabbed the bottom of my T-shirt to pull it over my head. Then Jake coughed violently and I looked at his embarrassed face. – What? After all, I'm not going to sit here like a nun or there will be popcorn left of me.

I took off my T-shirt leaving me in a red swimsuit top. I looked out of the corner of my eye at Jake's flushed cheeks. It must be the temperature.

I heard a loud whistling in front of me, which made me raise my eyes. A boy in his 20s or so looked at me suggestively, but immediately walked away as soon as he saw that Jake, who was accompanying me, was taking off his shirt and sending him an unpleasant look. I turned to face Jake and was nearly clobbered.

Teenage hormones were bubbling as I moved my gaze over his slightly defined arm muscles as well as his abdomen. The pendant that hung loosely from his neck perfectly matched the sculpture of his body and....

Damn it, MC stop checking him out!

I forced my gaze back to his eyes and knew that my earlier act had not taken place without his knowledge. A slight, yet cocky and confident smile stretched his lips. I bestowed a hostile look on him, raising an eyebrow.

– Why did you do this?

– I don't know what you are talking about. – he said looking away and laying down, laying his head on his backpack. Through my meaningful silence, he sighed and forced himself to answer – It looked like he was trying to flirt with you.

I smiled victoriously.

– So you're jealous?

– No.

His answer was immediate which only put me in a better mood.

– But you like me.

– I tolerate you more than most people. – Jake's typical response

Some time later we went to a nearby beach bar to buy something to drink. My attention was caught by a box filled with ice, in which two bottles of wine were placed. I looked pleadingly in Jake's direction to which he firmly shook his head.

– No, box wine does not count as keeping yourself hydrated. – he recited as if he were reading a pamphlet from a doctor. I stuck out my middle finger in his direction.

– What can I get you, Jake? – asked the bartender, who turned out to be a friend of Jake's

– Two Sex on the beach. – he replied, and the bartender smiled provocatively and winked in our direction, then started making drinks

– Oh really? – I teased him

– I will throw the drink on you. – he replied smiling artfully

Not being 21 was not a problem in this bar. Familiarity was enough.

I couldn't hold back my laughter as I looked over at Jake, who was seated under one of the umbrellas, putting on his sunglasses and slowly sipping his drink while giving a shit about the whole world around him. When he heard my laughter, he pulled off his glasses and, with one eye squinted through the sun, asked.

– What is it this time?

– The energy you have is tired dad energy.

– I don't have kids? And I don't want to? – he furrowed his eyebrows in incomprehension and his obliviousness amused me even more

– Still, you're gonna be a DILF. – I finished shamelessly, and a short laugh filled his lips

Christ, and that sound was so lovely.

With him I let go of all my brakes. I knew him for two weeks, yet they seemed like two years.

– You're too quiet, and you never want to talk about yourself, why? – I asked curiously, watching him refill his drink

– You talk plenty enough for both of us. – he replied simply to which I tilted my head to the side in disbelief

– I just... Hey! – I shouted as he took my drink and began to drink it to the end, rudely looking into my eyes

Drinking from the same straw is almost like kissing, isn't it?

– Give it back! – I tried to grab the glass, however, the boy used his advantage and pulled his hand up every time I tried to take back my property – You are unbelievable!

And so arguing we were watched by some tourists however then no one else counted but him. And I saw the same in his eyes. The whole world around us disappeared, there was only us and we didn't worry about anything.
