it's so fucking frustrating to be in college and know everyone uses chatgpt and to be tempted by it constantly while also knowing intellectually that it doesn't work and it's a bad idea. like, i hang out in the library a lot, and i see people using chatgpt on assignments almost every day. and i know it isn't a good way to learn, because it's not really "artificial intelligence" so much as it is an auto text generator. and it gives you wrong information or badly worded sentences all the time. but every week i stare down assignments i don't want to do and i think man. if only i could type this prompt into a text generator and have it done in 10 minutes flat. and i know it wouldn't work. it wouldn't synthesize information from the text the way professors want, it wouldn't know how to answer questions, it just spits out vaguely related words for a couple paragraphs. but knowing my classmates get their work done in 10 minutes flat with it while i fight every ounce of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in my body is infuriating.

I just think whoever decided, when 911 was doing it’s sort of soft reboot in season 2, that buck needed a sister and wrote the character of Maddie deserves the world.

They really looked at this show and said: you know what this show needs? Big Sister Energy. And Jennifer Love Hewitt. And they were right.

If the boop button never gets revived then I think I’ll be traumatized for the rest of my life, because I’ve just officially confirmed that I witnessed it die before my very eyes. I was in the middle of booping when it happened.

A/N: A dialogue drabble for one of the many times when the team must have been questioned by the IA department.

***

Interviewer: Tell me how this all started.

Deeks, drawing in a breath between his pursed lips: Ooh, that’s an interesting question. Well, I began as a lawyer—you know, wanting to see justice served and all that—but I realized that wasn’t for me, so I applied to the police academy. I didn’t have the easiest time there.

Interviewer: Agent Deeks, perhaps you could just stick to your time here with NCIS.

Deeks: It’s actually Investigator Deeks. Don’t ask me why. Do you want to hear about my first case with NCIS when I was just a detective, my 10 and a half years as a liaison, or my most recent position as an investigator?

Interview, bemused: Whichever you think is most relevant to your work with the agency.

Deeks, pleasantly: Oh, I’d say they’re all relevant. My first case with NCIS really forged my place on the team, though it took some time for everyone to realize my brilliance. As a liaison, I had the pleasure of forging a relationship between NCIS and LAPD for the betterment of both agencies with the intent of reducing miscommunications, errors, and—

Interviewer: Investigator Deeks, are you quoting directly from the handbook?

Deeks: I am a lawyer. It’s kind of our thing.

Interviewer: You’re still a lawyer?

Deeks, shrugging: I like to have options. By the way, page 326 in the handbook has a very critical, and potentially legally disastrous, error which I’d be happy to tell you about if you ask nicely.

Interviewer: I think we’re done here.

Deeks: Happy to be of help. *he starts to walk away* The legal offer still stands if you change your mind!

Side Note To Fan Fic Authors

Here’s the thing.

I read a lot of scripts.  A lot.  From professionals to aspiring writers to complete newbies.  Features and pilots.  Specs and treatments.

And 8 times out of 10 the fan fic that I’ve read over the last, oh, 15 years is leagues better than this stuff.  It’s more inspired.  It’s more compelling.  It’s genre bending and creative and heartfelt.  It’s well-paced and intense and funny and sexy and meaningful.  It’s smart and thoughtful and good.  It’s novel-quality.  Better than, sometimes.

Rare is the script I don’t want to put down, but how often have we stayed up until 3am to get to the last chapter of a 100k fic? And it’s not even a fan fic author’s day job.  This is what they do on the side.  In their spare time.  For free.

So my point is, fan fic authors, you’re good.  You’re good writers and great storytellers.  I know it doesn’t always feel like it, especially if you’re one of the authors who’s not a BNF and doesn’t get the notes/hits that a few do.  And  because some people still view fic as “not real writing.” You guys know the shit that gets made into movies.  You’re better than that.  So be better than that.  If writing is what you think want to do, then just know you’re already doing it.   You’ve already started.

And you’re more talented than you might think.
