Chapter 1 - “I’m The Doctor”

image

Amelia Jessica Pond, you may know her as The Girl Who Waited, but she also happened to be the mother of Melody Pond, aka River Song. But surprisingly, Amy didn't give birth to just one child. She gave birth to twin girls. Her name was Cornelia Pond, the youngest twin to River Song, sent to the planet of Mondas and married a general named Richard Lovegood. Everything was peaceful until the day Esther Lovegood was born. The child had a very special power that could not be explained except for the Timelords. Because of that, Cornelia fled the planet Mondas to Earth in order to protect her child as well as herself from possible dangers of her ex-husband. By the time Cornelia's daughter was 5, she started to ask questions about the universe as well as the history behind every textbook the girl could get her hands on. The poor woman could barely keep up with her daughter, but loved her just the same, and managed to keep in touch with her sister River to tell her stories about a mysterious timelord known as "The Doctor."

Years later, Esther Lovegood has grown up into a high school graduate enjoying summer break before moving to the city of London for college. Currently, the girl was roaming the street market looking for ingredients for dinner tonight until her phone started to ring. She picks it up to see it was her mother calling, probably wondering what's taking her daughter so long to get groceries, "Hello Mum" she said calmly "Where are you, love?" asked Cornelia on the other line, "The supermarket isn't that far of a walk from home, you know" "Oh I decided to check out the flea market instead of our usual supermarket" said Esther, picking up a beautiful red apple from the apple cart, "It just gets so boring going to the same place all the time, plus it does make for good exercise. You should try it if you wanna get out more-" The girl paused, seeing something from the distance and a man running for his dear life. Esther immediately hangs up the phone and cautiously walks over to the scene of the crime to witness an army of evil robots known as Cyberman, attacking poor innocent civilians to their demise, some even controlled by them. This shocked the poor girl and quickly fled the scene to find help. Unfortunately, the police couldn't do anything about it and were left defenseless. As Esther continued her way around town, the sound of moaning was heard in the air, not by a human but a machine. A blue telephone box appeared out of nowhere along with a man. He was tall and skinny, but proper skinny, with a blue striped suit underneath a long brown trench coat and his hair spiked with who knows how much hair gel. The man stole a glance at the girl and smiled, "Hello, love" he said kindly, "What brings you all the way to Scotland?" Esther looked rather confused, "You're not in Scotland, sir" she said, "This is West Sussex, England" The stranger looked just as confused and climbed back into the telephone box, "I thought I sent the T.A.R.D.I.S. to Ye Old Scotland!" he yelled, "You did this on purpose, did you old girl?" "Excuse me?" asked Esther "Not you!" The girl walked over to the booth and raised her hand to knock until the stranger opened the door, causing Esther to shriek and fall on her bum. The man looked down with concern and confusion, "What'd ya doin' down there?" he asked "I fell over" said Esther "What'd you fell over for?" "I didn't do it on purpose" He held out his hand to help the girl up, dusting his hands for a moment before pulling out a tool known as the sonic screwdriver. "What's that?" asked Esther, pointing at the device. "It's called a sonic screwdriver" he explained, "Now if you'd be so kind as to leave the area before I-" The man was cut off by the girl entering the T.A.R.D.I.S. without wasting a second. "Blood hell!" said Esther, "This place is bigger on the inside, it's incredible!" "Yes it is, now please leave!" The girl looked offended for a moment while the stranger attempted to push her outside, "Okay" she said in a calm manner, "You want me to leave, that's fine. I can just let those robots either turn me into one of them or be obliviated" "Excellent!" The man replied before his eyes widened and realized, "Wait! Did you say robots?" Esther turns toward the man and hesitates before answering, "Yes?" "What did they look like?" "Tall, made of silver, some of them human with weird pieces on the side of their head" Suddenly, a blaster was heard from the distance, causing the two to glance over and see a Cyberman scanning the area with its back turned to the T.A.R.D.I.S. "Get in" said the man, grabbing Esther's arm and dragging her inside, "Shut the door!" "What are those things?" asked Esther, shutting the door before running towards the controller where the stranger was pressing buttons and pulling down levers. "Those are the Cyberman" said the man, "They're biological lifeforms that have replaced their flesh into metal. They're main goal is to obviously destroy the human race and take over a planet, or possibly destroy the planet itself" "And how do you know all this?" The man stops and stood before the girl, smiling down at her with a goofy grin, "I'm the Doctor" Esther froze for a moment, then it all came together. All the stories she'd heard as a child were all true. All the adventures of the famous Timelord traveling through time and space, saving galaxies, fighting monsters and aliens. They were all true.

The Doctor reached his hand towards a leaver while keeping his eyes on the girl, "You might wanna hold on to something" he said with a wink. Without hesitation, Esther grabs onto the handles as the T.A.R.D.I.S. shook violently, sending the two through time and space. The sound of loud moaning appeared again once they landed on the other side of town. The Doctor checks the screen above the control panel for any sign of Cybermen, "all clear" he said, making his way towards the door with Esther following behind. "Are they gone then?" she asks the Doctor "Nope" he said, "But we did lose sight of them for now. Come along then" "And where exactly are we going, Doc?" "Somewhere I can find the proper tools to stop them. Nasty things, Cyberman are. I was turned into one once, not really but a metal piece was on my head and was called 'Mr. Clever' one of my most challenging opponents cause he was me but yet he wasn't me" Esther was rather confused, the need to ask so many questions to the Doctor until her phone started to ring. The Doctor quickly pulls out his sonic screwdriver and looked around the empty shop with caution, "Get down!" he said "Relax, Doctor" said Esther, pulling out her phone from her pocket, "It's my cellphone, my mother must be wondering where I am" The moment the girl answered the phone, her mother's voice was low and worrisome, "Esther" she whimpered, "Oh my god, are you alright, love? What happened I tried calling you but you never answered" "Mum, I'm okay" said Esther, "I'm on the other side of town I can come home right away if-" "No! Don't come home" The Doctor listened to the conversation in silence, his eyes staring at the girl with concern as she paced around the empty shop with confusion and worry dancing on her face. "What do you mean, 'Don't come home', mum?" asked Esther in a panic, "What's going on? Are the cybermen after you?" "Someone knows you're here, love" said Cornelia on the other line, "You have to leave and find a new place to hide. The next time we meet, you may not recognize my face" "Mum, what the hell are you talking about?" "I'm afraid my time has come, sweetheart. I love you so much....goodbye" BANG Silence fell into the empty shop as Esther stood in shock and horror, "Mum?" she asked on the phone, no response, "Mum, what happened? Are you still there? Mum!" The line was cut off, it was dead silence on the other end of the girl's cellphone. She fights back the tears so as to not look humiliated in front of the timelord. The Doctor however felt her pain, the loss of a loved one. He knew it all too well. Without a single hint of hesitation, he pulls Esther into a tight and comforting hug, her face buried into The Doctor's brown coat. It was then it happened, she wept into the Doctor's arms, her cries muffled into his shirt while he soothed her, running his fingers through her short brown hair. "Shhh" The Doctor whispered, "It's alright, we can get through this" He pulled away and gently wiped the girl's tears with his thumb, seeing the look of loss and sorrow struck the timelord's two hearts. It was the same look he had when he lost his many companions, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song, but especially, Rose Tyler. Esther sniffled as her glossy eyes looked up at the Doctor, "She was my home" she said sadly, "I have nowhere else to go" The Doctor stood in silence, there was no way he could leave this poor girl alone now that her mother was gone. He took a deep breath and placed his hands on either side of the girl's shoulders, a serious look painted on his face and sharp chin, "I'll protect you in every way I can" he said, "but most importantly, you have to trust me"

Esther was too choked up to speak, instead she nodded in response to the Doctor's words. Of course she normally wouldn't trust someone she just met, but something about the timelord seemed comforting and trustworthy, even though the stories she was told said otherwise. She wipes her tears with the back of her hand while the Doctor thinks of a plan that might stop the Cybermen before they could cause more damage to the planet. He stops and pulls out his sonic screwdriver and points it at the girl, "I never got your name by the way" he said. The girl looked at the Doctor with confusion until she realized she never told him her name. "Esther" she said, "Esther Lovegood" "Lovely name," he said, "Like her majesty the stars in the night sky” Esther couldn't help but giggle a bit and softly smile at the Doctor, it did take her mind off of what happened to her mother. "There's that smile" he said, grinning from ear to ear, "Now then, give me your phone" "Huh?" asked Esther "What did I say to you before?" "Most importantly, I have to trust you?" "Very good. Finally, someone who ACTUALLY listens to me" The Doctor holds out his hand and Esther hands the timelord her cellphone. He examined it rather quickly, scanning it with his sonic screwdriver, taking in its data before thinking of a plan. As the girl sat down and watched the Doctor think, she noticed a figure a few windows down. It was tall and a bit hard to see due to the puffiness in her eyes from crying. She rubbed her eyes for clarity until she realized that the figure staring back at her was a Cyberman. It stood in silence, raising its wrist to reveal a blaster, "Watch out!" called Esther, tackling the Doctor to the ground as the Cyberman fires toward the two. The cell phone slipped out of the Doctor's hand in one direction, the screwdriver in the other. There was a moment of panic, "I hate being interrupted!" The Doctor complained, "Why can't I get a moment's peace for once in my life?!" The girl looked around the room and noticed the closest object to her right was the sonic screwdriver while her cellphone was closest to the Doctor's direction. "Doctor!" said Esther through the sound of blasters and broken glass, "grab my cell phone, I'll get the screwdriver" Before the Doctor could tell her 'no', Esther army crawls her way toward the device, stopping every once in a while to avoid getting shot. Her right hand reached for the screwdriver, her fingers barely touching the handle. "Surrender, Doctor" said the Cyberman, its robotic voice sound cold as the metal material it was made out of, "You cannot stop the future" "I can and I will!" said the Doctor, grabbing the cell phone the same time Esther manages to grab the sonic screwdriver, "Come along, Lovegood!" As the blast hit the walls and windows of the shop, the Doctor stood and grabbed the girl by her hand, escaping to the back and making their way back to the T.A.R.D.I.S. "Doctor!" said Esther, her feet standing in place while the timelord followed suit, "Where's the T.A.R.D.I.S.?" "What are you talking about, Esther?" asked the Doctor, "She's right there where we left-" The moment the timelord turned around, he realized the T.A.R.D.I.S. was gone. No traces of the bright navy blue phone box, not even the sound of its tender purring sound. "No! No! No! No! NO!!" The Doctor yelled in anger, "The Cybermen were not supposed to take the T.A.R.D.I.S.!" "How do you know the Cybermen took the T.A.R.D.I.S.?" asked Esther "Isn't it obvious?!" The timelord rambled on and on about the Cybermen taking his form of transportation, pacing around in circles on the surprisingly quiet street. If there were still humans around, The Doctor would've caused a great disturbance in the neighborhood. Esther on the other hand looked down at the sonic screwdriver in her right hand. She looked at every detail of the device and unknowingly turned it on to reveal a small green light in the end with a sonic buzzing sound coming from it. She points it in random directions until she points it towards a rather tall skyscraper. West Sussex is well known for its historical architecture and historical landmarks, so the sight of a rather large silver building was something out of the ordinary in this part of town. "Doctor?" asked Esther, lowering the sonic screwdriver in her hand and turning off the light, "Was that there before?" The Doctor stops his complaints and turns toward the girl in confusion, "what are you talking about?" he asked, "There are no skyscrapers in West Sussex. It's a ridiculous idea for such a small town like this" The girl noticed something coming up to the roof, it looked like rather familiar humans assisting the cybermen as well as flying a helicopter. But what really took her by surprise is what the helicopter was carrying, "The T.A.R.D.I.S.!" She yelled, tugging the Doctor by the sleeve and pointed towards the timelord's ship, "but how are we gonna get up there? It's probably surrounded by cybermen" The Doctor looks around until he spots an abandoned motorcycle sitting by a telephone pole, "Hop on then" he said, making his way toward the vehicle. Esther stood there flabbergasted, how on earth could she and the Doctor go past a heavily guarded building with just a motorcycle. She brushed the thought aside and followed the Doctor, who pulled out the girl's cell phone thinking it was his screwdriver. He paused and glanced at Esther before his eyes trailed down to her right hand. Without a word, the two switched devices and the Doctor starts the motorcycle with the help of his sonic screwdriver. Its engine purring and ready to roll. "How did you do that?" asked Esther "No time for questions, Esther" said the Doctor, "Hop on and hold on tight. This is going to be a bumpy ride" The timelord hands the girl a helmet once she sits behind him and places the helmet on. Her arms wrapped tightly around the Doctor's waist as they made their way towards the skyscraper. The closer the bike to them, the more possessed humans began to surround the entrance. "They're blocking our path!" said Esther, "You're not expecting us to run them over, do you?" "Just trust the Doctor for heaven's sake!" cried a voice. The girl paused, scanning the quiet town but there was no one in sight. The voice continued, "The Doctor may be mad but he knows what he's doing!" Esther decided to take the voice's word for it as the Doctor drove the motorcycle faster until it reached a construction site yelling with excitement, "ALLONS-Y!!!" The motorcycle went over the cyber controlled humans and landed on the side of the skyscraper. Normally anyone who did that would come crashing through the glass window, instead it ignored the laws of physics and rode upward toward the top of the building. Esther looked down and held onto the Doctor tighter, for fear of falling over to her possible death, her eyes shut tight while the Doctor continued to laugh like a child in a candy store.

The moment the two unlikely companions reached the top of the skyscraper, a handful of Cybermen stood tall while a human man dressed in a military uniform stood front and center. What Esther found odd about the man was that he didn't have a metal piece on the side of his head like the others that were taken over by the Cybermen, but the serious and deadly look in his eye definitely shows that the soldier was the one in charge of the whole show. "So you've finally came, Doctor" said the soldier, "I have received word of your arrival and wanted to see if the rumors were true" "Well, now you know" said The Doctor, climbing off the motorcycle while Esther remained seated, "Was this a way to make me come close and personal? Been there, done that" As the Doctor approached the soldier, Esther watched in silence with her hands forming a grip around the end of her skirt, pleading that the timelord wouldn't get himself hurt. "Relax, kiddo. He is the Doctor after all" There it was again, the voice from before. But this time it sounded much more clear that the girl could make out its details. The voice sounded feminine, young (maybe mid to early 20s), definitely English native. "How do you know that?" asked Esther "Because I was once his companion" said the voice, "only he was a bit younger looking at the time" In the corner of Esther's eye stood a rather short female that looked around her age. She had blonde hair that reached just slightly past her shoulders, a pink shirt with a blue leather jacket which had both her hands on either side of the pockets. Her eyes looked like a wolf but her smile seemed kind and trusting. "Who are you?" asked Esther, "How do you know the Doctor so well" "Like I said, I was once his companion just like you are right now" said the mysterious female. "Esther!" called the Doctor, "You're phone please" Esther turned her attention back to the timelord who had his hand stretched out for the girl to toss her cell phone over. She looked confused for a moment until she did as the Doctor told her without question. She pulled out her cell phone and tossed it to the Doctor. He clumsily catches the mobile device and placed it together with his sonic screw driver, lifting it into the air as he announced, "Within the next 10 minutes, this bomb will explode!" "A bomb?!" yelled Esther, her eyes wide as saucers, "You can't be serious, Doctor!" The Doctor turned his eyes towards the girl, "I but I am" he said, followed by a wink. This action confused the girl until the figure nodded with a trusting smile. It was then the girl realize this was part of the real plan, she nods in response before the Doctor continued, "May I suggest find the KEY to this tight situation in your POCKET before things start to get messy" Esther checked her front pocket to find a small key hidden inside it. Her eyes looked down at the item before turning her attention back to the Doctor, "Just PULL the flag of surrender, and PRESS THE RED BUTTON to bring yourselves back home. But don't worry, The T.A.R.D.I.S. will come back to me no matter what, don't cha old girl?" The soldier laughed as if he heard the funniest joke in the world at the Doctor, his sickening grin still plastered on his face while the Cybermen aimed their wrist blasters at the timelord, "You think I'm a coward, don't you Doctor?" he asked, "I suggest that YOU leave this planet before you could say your silly little catchphrase" The Doctor's face grew with offense, "well excuse me for having a lovely catchphrase!" He said, "Unlike those Cybermen of yours, all they say is 'You will be upgraded' or 'You will be deleted' all the bloody time. Honestly, that's starting to get rather old" In the corner of The Doctor's eye, he sees Esther cautiously enter the T.A.R.D.I.S. and smiles to himself, a new companion who ACTUALLY listens to him for once.

Once Esther entered the T.A.R.D.I.S, she made a break for the controls in the center of the room, scanning every button and lever she could memorize and find within arms reach. She successfully finds the red button the Doctor mentioned but wasn't quite sure which lever to pull since two were presented, one on the left and one on the right. "Which one tho?" she asked herself, "Be more specific the next time you mention a lever, Doctor" The girl hovers her right hand over the red button while her left reaches over to the left lever only to stop when another hand stops her. "Wait!" the voice said, it was the girl from earlier. "How'd you get in here?" asked Esther "Don't ask questions, just trust me on this" "Why should I? You could be lying" "I never lie" "Have you?" The figure paused as her eyes began to glow, it did frighten Esther just a bit but swallowed the lump in her throat and slowly switched her hands from one place to another. Now Esther's left hand was hovering over the red button while her right hand reached for the lever on the right. "On three?" asked Esther while the figure nodded, placing her hand over the girl's for support. "One… Two… Three!" Once the lever was pulled, Esther pressed the red button and off the T.A.R.D.I.S. went, disappearing from the skyscraper and enough time for The Doctor to work on his true plan.

The T.A.R.D.I.S makes its appearance in the backyard of a small house on the other side of town. The sound of its engine purring around the area as it makes a safe landing. Esther was practically on the floor after the ship flew across time and space, laying on her back and her short hair somehow turned into a bird's nest. She sits up and adjust herself a bit before standing up to dust her shirt a bit more, "That was quite a happy landing" said the blonde figure, "At least you make a better driver than the Doctor" Esther glanced at the blonde female, "Who are you anyway?" she asks, "you never told me your name" The blonde hesitates before taking a deep breath and answered the question, "Rose" she answered, "Rose Tyler" The girl nods and repeats the name silently to herself before turning herself toward Rose Tyler, "Okay, Rose" she said, "My name's Esther Lovegood" "I know," said Rose with a smile, "shall we then?" Esther hesitates for a moment before making her way towards the door, cautiously opening it to see where the T.A.R.D.I.S has taken them. It turns out that the house belonged to Esther and her mother, "How did-?" "No time for questions" said Rose, appearing near the shed, "Just pack what's important cause those Cybermen might be looking for you right now so be quick about it" Without a moments hesitation, Esther quickly enters the house through the backdoor, seeing the place looked as if a bomb went off. She quickly makes her way up the stairs and grabs whatever seems important. First a couple of pairs of clean clothes, some books and notes, shoes, and some photos from her childhood. Esther then grabs what appears to be a hand-sized toy which looks similar to a robot known as The Daleks. "What's that?" asked Rose, looking over Esther's shoulder to get a better look at the robot, "Is it safe?" "It's only a toy" said Esther, "My mom made this for me when I was a kid, used to play with it all the time and it holds a lot of memories for me" The girl placed the toy inside her suitcase and hesitates to close it for a moment, "Wait a minute" she said, closing the suitcase before heading back downstairs to find her mother's body. She looked in the powder room, the dining area, the living room, the master bedroom, even the kitchen but the older woman was nowhere in sight. "What the hell?" she asked herself, "This is impossible, her body should've been here, not even the police." "Hurry up!" said Rose, "Time's of the essence you know" Esther takes a deep breath before making her way back to her bedroom and grabs her suitcase to leave West Sussex. But the moment Esther steps outside in the backyard, the T.A.R.D.I.S was gone. "Not again!" said Esther, placing her suitcase down and sits upon it, "I lost the T.A.R.D.I.S twice" "Don't worry, love" said Rose, walking beside the girl and kneels next to her, "The Doctor will be back in no time, I promise"

Hours felt like days as Esther waited anxiously on the footsteps of her house. Her foot repeatedly tapped against the step beneath her while looking up at the stars in the sky. Just when the girl was about to lose all hope, the sound of a familiar time machine was heard from across the street. She smiled as the T.A.R.D.I.S came to view and out comes the Doctor with a brand new long blue coat and matching tie, "There you are'' he said with a goofy smile, "Thought I'd lost ya" "You're late, Doctor" said Esther, standing up from the steps and grabbing her suitcase, making her way towards the timelord. "Is this the thanks I get for saving the world for the millionth time?" asked the Doctor, "Maybe more than that, but who's counting anyway?" Esther giggled and looked up at the time machine, "so...where to then?" she asks This made the Doctor smile and answer with confidence, "wherever and whenever you want, love" he said, "Every galaxy, every part of history, time and space are at your fingertips!" The Doctor steps aside and allows the girl to enter the T.A.R.D.I.S first, followed by himself, then makes his way to the controls. Esther placed her suitcase aside and looked around the main control room a bit before slipping her hand into her left pocket. She paused, feeling a small piece of paper that she never owned inside, pulling the paper out and opening it to see a small little message. 'When I was a little girl, I had an imaginary friend. And when I grew up, he came back. He's called "The Doctor" He comes from somewhere else He has a box called 'The T.A.R.D.I.S" that can travel anywhere through time and space. I ran away with him, and we've been running ever since. - Amy Pond' Esther looked up at The Doctor who was busy with the controls before looking up at the girl, she quickly hid the note before the Doctor would notice. "Where would you like to go then?" he asked with a goofy smile. The girl thinks for a moment and shrugs, "Surprise me" she answered. This made the Doctor's childish smile grow wider, "I love surprises" he said before the T.A.R.D.I.S takes off, traveling through time and space.

Next Time on Doctor Who

"Welcome to the Lost City of Atlantis!" "Oh ain't she a beauty?" "Your majesty, long time no see" "I thank you, Doctor" "With those two in the way, it won't be easy to get rid of that naïve Queen Aquamarine." "My name is Martha Jones, I can help you" "Doctor!"
