"Meine Sachen Waren Halt Die Anziehsachen, Die Es Im Osten Zu Kaufen Gab. Mein Groer Bruder Hatte Sie
"Meine Sachen waren halt die Anziehsachen, die es im Osten zu kaufen gab. Mein großer Bruder hatte sie außerdem schon ein paar Jahre vor mir getragen. Oder ich trug, wie gesagt, stolz die Mädchensachen aus die Westpaketen. Vielleicht bin ich im falschen Körper geboren worden. So etwas hört man ja jetzt immer öfter. Als Kind habe ich das wahrscheinlich einfach nicht gemerkt."
(It's towards the end of Der Tastenficker when he's talking about his romantic history. He then goes on to decide that the problem was just that he didn't wash his pants or his hair, so women weren't interested.)
Perhaps this is a weird ask but it came up in a few conversations recently.
There’s one anecdote floating around that Flake may have questioned his gender identity when he was younger, what’s the deal with it? So many people I know have heard of it, and no one actually has a source! Because of that I doubt its validity. And if untrue, I wonder where it started. Have you heard of it?
At the end of the day it’s not our business anyways, I’m just curious.
Interesting..i must say i never heard it before, but ofcourse i haven't heard or read everything Flake has said, and with his book tours and various podcasts (his own, or guesting on others'), he may well have said something in that direction and i don't know it.
It is not an often recurring theme though, not like talking about hiking with his family or his chilean friend, or being scarec of everything; about that he talks a lot.
Just to be sure, i turned to Flake's first book 'Der Tastenficker' which is more biographical about himself than 'Heute hat die Welt Geburtstag', and reread the first parts. As far as i can tell there is nothing in it about questioning gender identity or something alluding to it.
I found one part that, although not about gender as such, it does involve wearing girl's clothes, and i wonder if this somehow evolved into something different after retelling (either by Flake himself, or by fans). In it Flake talks about getting packages from 'The West' from family if his dad. (page 55 in my edition of Der Tastenficker)
"Because we only very rarely got packages from the West from my father's family. There were also some discarded clothes that I liked to put on, if only because they smelled so good. It didn't even occur to me that it was all girl stuff, since we only had two girl-cousins in the west who were a little older than us and could send us their discarded things. I found the dresses especially useful because I could tuck them into my underwear without them falling out. They were also very cozy as nightgowns. However, my band was quite irritated when I showed up proudly in my dress for breakfast one morning."
But that's the nearest i could find...maybe someone else has an idea 🌺

More Posts from Hwbswd
Oooh thank you, I'd love to see more! They're all so well cast!
Please might I have a little taster of "Field doctor Lorenz (slice-of-life/ one-shot)"? I am so intrigued already!

Why yes you absolutely may! 🌻
I think this was the first ever R+ fic idea I ever had. I’d just finished a book about spies and resistance groups in WW2 Europe and I imagined the boys as being part of a group similar to the Maquis who operated in France. The doctor was originally an OC,as I was still getting comfortable with writing everyone’s personalities, but as I revisited it recently I decided that Flake absolutely needed to be in that role.
I picture him being part of something like the Red Cross or DWB, during some kind of unrest. They occasionally tend to guerilla fighters who are hiding out in the area because they would probably be arrested if they tried to go to a regular hospital. The following is from Flake’s first time actually going to their base instead of meeting them at a half-way point.
Till leads him down a narrow hallway hung with peeling wallpaper. Most of the doors are closed, but they eventually reach an open one near the end and enter a small room. It’s dim inside. The only light comes from a lantern hanging on a hook in the ceiling.
Three men cluster near the back of the room, two standing and one crouched. Both of the standing men have rifles slung on their shoulders. All of them look up as one when Till and Flake enter. The tallest one frowns.
“Where’s Dr. Fehler?
“He was already on another call,” says Till. “This is Dr. Lorenz. We can trust him.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Flake nods, swallowing nervously as the other three continue to stare at him, wary and suspicious; he’s glad Till is there or else he might have completely lost his nerve. Nevertheless, he quickly turns his attention from the pointed looks to the floor, where a fourth individual lies on a bed of old blankets.
It’s a young man. His hair is shorn close, bleached so pale it’s almost white. His eyes are closed. Another thin blanket has been draped over his lower body, revealing a makeshift bandage tied hastily over his side.
Flake feels a momentary pang. This isn’t the youngest fighter he’s ever tended to, but the younger ones always give him pause. The man must be as tall as he is, if not taller, but in his current state, laid out on the floor and surrounded by the concerned and stoic faces of his older comrades, he seems no more than a child.

Flake's podcast - Gay and lesbian
podcast 2022-09-13

The biggest force in life and the only one Flake respects (apart from his wife) is Nature. And the biggest drive in Nature is Sex, big parts of life are about sex, thinking about sex, sex to reproduce, and to prevent to many people being born, Nature also created same-sex so it's completely natural for a man to love a man and woman to love a woman. That is the intro to this podcast, and Flake plays songs about, or by, gay or lesbian artists, some of whom are well known to be gay, some who had to hide it for a long time (and some, to be honest, i think Flake is 'outing' without really knowing 🍀 but as he sees homosexuality as something completely normal, he doesn't have a problem with that).
As a sidenote he also mentions some of his favorite things:
author: Kurt Vonnegut (0h29)
fictional character: Kilgore Trout
movie: Brokeback Mountain (0h48)
saying: 'Der Spaß ist kurz, ein Leben lang' (0h58, from the song Kribbel Krabbel by Ton Steine Scherben) (meaning something like 'Fun only lasts a short time, for an entire life'
composer: Chopin (1h53), but eventually he heard so much of it thathis interest diminshed a bit, Flake compares this how Modern Talking music, that was also played so much..."Paul our guitarist" said about that "It is good because otherwise there wouldn't be millions of people listening to it", but Flake doesn't agree, it's not his cup of tea, no matter how many listeners they have)
painter: Gauguin (1h53)
Completely fitting in the theme at 1h40 Flake plays the Rammstein song 'Mann gegen Mann' which to the band is called 'Schwuler' (but their Swedish producer Mann gegen Mann (Man against man) sounded better, Flake thinks it should at least have been Mann mit Mann (Man with man)), the songtitle comes from the Family Values Tour in the US which Rammstein did with a.o. Korn, Korn had a song 'Faget', and Rammstein told them it meant 'Schwuler' in German. They heard it so often at the tour that they made a song about it.
But the funnest anecdote (especially for the fanfic-inclined among us) is at 1h02, where Flake talks about when Rammstein records an album, they retreat to a studio and for three weeks they do everything together: make music, eat together, sit down after work, watch tv, and they all get really familiar. When hanging out together they regularly drop a theme and talk about each one's experience with it, often it turns out that a theme that one thought they had only experienced themselves, others know about as well. Well, one night the topic 'Homo erotic experience' was brought to the table, and as it turned out, the entire band had their experience with that...either going home with someone after a party , or when they were at school with a friend... ❤️ Most people have both sides in them, sometimes inclined a bit more to one side, sometimes to the other, and Flake also occassionally is attracted, to a guy, for instance in a movie.
He knows what it's like to get a warm feeling in his heart ❤️
PS. because of that anecdote, I'm not going to complain that he completely fails to acknowledge Adam Lambert is singing in Queen 😄 and that he isn't playing Freddie Mercury's boyfriend in the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' movie (or maybe i am in the wrong there 😊)

I enjoy the style of vintage Vogue \ Ellle \ Vanity Fair illustration covers and since the band is pretty stylish I decided to redraw some of their pics as if it was a fashion magazine cover. Plus my 1st step by step tutorial ?????

(you can help me broaden my audience by rebloging. this'll help me to continue doing whatever the hell I'm doing. also R+ fans hello there welcome and you can suggest what to draw ;) )

Well, there was this one time even if the intent wasn't quite the same!
Please tell me more about RZK’s hand on Flake’s thigh ;)
I really wish it was there and it was the reason why Flake was grinning like that, but unfortunately, reality's cruel :'( Which just means that we'll need to use our imagination I guess - may I remind you of this wonderful fic by @hwbswd, for instance? 👀
