This Was A Hypothesis I Had Back Around The Mutsuki Saiko Convo Where I Realized It Wouldnt Be Unrealistic
This was a hypothesis I had back around the Mutsuki Saiko convo where I realized it wouldn’t be unrealistic for Mutsuki to not know what being trans is. But didn’t feel comfortable posting about being as cis as... idk whats a good yardstick for cisness? Mel Gibson? Let’s go with that.
Also thanks for the grammar lesson cause whenever I saw someone saying “a transgender” It sounded physically wrong. Like all those express checkout signs that read “15 items or less”
Educational Post About Mutsuki Tooru from Tokyo Ghoul and How He is a Trans Male
This post is meant to be an educational post about what being trans is from myself a trans male. I am in no way trying to call out or yell at people, I just want people to try seeing Mutsuki from a different perspective.
As many people know, being transgender is not something very often talked about and many people have never learned about it. This is especially true in a more conservative country like Japan where the vocabulary is not often known. As someone who took a while to realise I was trans because of my lack of education on trans issues when I was younger, I know how challenging it can to understand ones identity. I believe this is the case with Mutsuki. He doesn’t know how to directly describe his gender because he doesn’t have the words.
I’d like to start off by pointing out what he said to the CCG when he was agreeing to join. He had asked if he could “live as boy because he was uncomfortable living as a female.” This is a common way for trans people to describe how they feel about their gender when they don’t know what being trans is or that they can just say how they wish to identify. A similar phrase would be someone constantly wishing they were another gender because they don’t yet realise they can identify as that gender.
Also, some people might say that Mutsuki falls under the girl-pretending-to-be-a-boy trope that is common throughout manga and anime, however, there is a reason why I feel that Mutsuki does not fit this trope. An important part of the trope that is needed for it to work and make sense, is for the female character to have a specific/important/practical reason for pretending to be a boy. For example, Pidge from Voltron chose to pretend to be male so she could go to the garrison academy and not get kicked out. Another example is Mulan; she disguised herself as male so she could fight in the army where only men were allowed. Mutsuki on the other hand doesn’t have a reason like this. If he truly identified as female, he could’ve entered the CCG that way with no problem. He only joined as a male because he was uncomfortable with being female.
Moving on, this can also relate to his latest line saying, “I am almost embarrassingly female.” Mutsuki isn’t saying that he’s female but that he’s embarrassed with being biologically seen as female. This can connect with sexual orientation, too, as I think he sees his love for Kaneki as feminine (as gay attractions are often seen) and he doesn’t want to be seen as such.
Lastly, I’d like to talk about Mutsuki’s conversation with Saiko about her knowing he’s a “girl.” Now, as I said at the beginning of this post, Mutsuki has no knowledge or education on being transgender. All he knows is that biologically he’s been identified as female and up to the point of joining CCG, that’s what everyone says he is. Mutsuki doesn’t feel comfortable identifying as female, however, he has no other way of describing his biological makeup or secret as anything other than “being a girl.” So, Mutsuki saying that Saiko found out he’s a “girl” is basically his way of saying that she knows he’s transgender. Also, he doesn’t want anyone to know that because he wants to continue living as a male.
I hope that this post has been able to educate people somewhat and maybe make people think. As I know this will be a problem, I’m not looking to argue or debate with anyone so if you send me hateful or transphobic remarks they will be ignored and deleted and you will e blocked. HOWEVER: If you are truly curious and want to learn more about the trans community or what being trans is like feel free to send me questions.
And please remember to be respectful to people despite differences. Also quick PSA: the word tranny is a slur so please don’t use it to refer to Mutsuki or irl trans people. Also transgender is an adjective not a noun so please refrain from using terms like “a transgender” or “transgenders.” Like come on guys, we’re not a separate species or anything. Anyway, thanks for reading this post if you did!
