Much shorter post tonight because I have like 5 other essays about Akechi in the making. I often wonder what the connotations of him, as the black mask, having a helmet are, rather than just a normal mask - especially since it doesn't disappear or is removed even while summoning his persona. Personally, I always viewed it like this: his anger and hatred is there to protect him when everything else failed to. A helmet is meant for protection, and I think thats what I think this persona is for. Any vulnerability can be hidden and buried and crushed under all of that hate. Anger is easier and more efficient than sadness and self-pity. It's so much easier to lay the blame at the feet of the world then to ever admit you may be the problem, or, in Akechi's case, lay all of your problems at the feet of one man and convince yourself that dealing with him will remove all your issues. I also like the idea of him not being able to remove it - his anger is such an embedded part of him that there is no taking it from him. There is no Akechi without that hatred and spite. not trying to be rude at all, im a fan and a follower...but i didn't focus too much on yuri, just thought he was a background character, playing the same siscon role that almost every anime seems to have...sorry but can you give me a brief maybe? of your pov? cause most people seem to hate him

the central idea of yuri briar is that he's here just for comedic relief, and obviously, he's such a siscon and this and that, right?

and i don't blame people for thinking that in their minds, because of the way the animators and some of the writing board seem to set him up...

even endo, had said that, he just wanted yuri to be a sweet little brother people would adore, but the writers made him like this, and well, you know.

anyway, even with this personality, his character's backstory provides a lot of justification to his behavior,, like sure, at first he might seem like the comedic relief type of character, who's inappropriately in love with his sister, but actually, it's not like that at all...

in the anime, they've sort of butchered his character more,, from the changing of the lily bouquet for his sister to the rose one, and then obviously the little translation mistakes here and there.

now, let's just get to the point.

in the scene where yuri calls yor and talks about the party, he asks her if she wants him to introduce her to someone, and tbh he seems very genuine with it.

in the scene where he's meeting loid for the first time, he tells yor he can't just accept this marriage. which is so fair, because imagine your literal blood, someone you grew up with, the only person you've really ever known, gets married, and then doesn't tell you for an entire year. like, that's gotta make you upset and question things right?

i do agree, that his attachment and his admiration and obsession towards his sister is unhealthy, but hey, at least give him a second. understand his perspective right? he was just a boy, who lost both his parents to a war and grew up with his sister being the only one who went above and beyond to get him basic essentials.

and, obviously, you'd love your sibling if you were in this situation right?

so it's just that he's not really yet grasped how to normally love yor,, now this doesn't really mean that he loves her abnormally lol.

im sure that the writers will continue to develop his character as the manga continues. he's already developed a lot, and while the overly obsessed brother trope is quite funny and well-used, especially in this manga,, i still believe he has more of a personality then they show us.

and the only thing annoying is that people seem to judge him and then make posts about how he's just so creepy and weird,, which proves that they've obviously not paid enough attention to his character details to understand the reasons behind it yknow?

inaccessible scenes: after the engine room

Many sequences in P5R are not deleted exactly—they're inaccessible. They're in game, theoretically, but game mechanics make it impossible for you ever to see them.

For instance, there are a bunch of TV shows that exist, that are presumably in game, but you can't ever get to the TV to watch them—usually because Morgana makes it impossible for you to go downstairs.

A couple of these scenes happen around the end of Shido's Palace, around the Akechi fight. Once you go into the engine room, you cannot leave until you defeat Akechi. You can't use a Goho-M, you can't take the route out. You are well and truly stuck.

Plus, once you have defeated him, the game funnels you to the Treasure, and any attempt to (say) go to a safe room will again be cockblocked by Morgana.

This means that the last two safe room meetings in Shido's Palace are never accessible. And one of them is important. Let's have a look.

We all know about the meetings—you go to the table in the safe room, you talk to the team, you ask how your progress is. They say some shit. It's usually worth a regular check-in:

The first inaccessible script appears to be triggered by entering the engine room. You get it after going in, but before fighting the Cleaner—so presumably after fighting his mooks, while you chase him about:

Morgana: We found the engine room, so all we need to do now is get our hands on the letter of introduction. Haru: It would be nice if we could avoid a fight in the process... Yusuke: Hm, given his attitude up to this point, that is highly unlikely...

The second one appears to kick in after the Akechi fight. After Akechi has given his life to save you:

Yusuke: Goro Akechi... I believe he may have been the greatest casualty of Shido's actions... Makoto: Was there no other way? Ann: We'll avenge him when we take Shido down. Come on, we have the letters now—let's do this!

"the greatest casualty of Shido's actions", huh? And it's inaccessible, of course. Leaving the engine room will warp you to the locked treasure room door. If you run to a safe room, Morgana won't let you go in. If you try afterwards, you've been updated to the "we need to send the calling card" script. You never see this.

But I'd bet money it's there. Just out of reach. Just another instance of the PTs understanding Akechi, and mourning him, rather than (say) hating him and being glad he's gone.

one more thing

Most people probably know that you can lurk mournfully by the shutters in the engine room. Nonetheless, here it is:

Since I only just got it: there is a very nice little creperie in Kichijoji, where you go for Akechi's confidant 3. If you go for a non-rank-up hangout with him, you will go there again. You can go there multiple times. At the end of the game, Morgana will sadly comment on it:

But can we just talk about the fact that this place is a creperie, and what it's called:

A crepe is a pancake. This place is literally called "honey and pancakes".

Akechi's pet café, his favourite café, the one he takes you to for his confidant and takes you to with Yoshizawa and takes you to if you just have nothing better to do that day, is a pancake café.

Just saw your recent reblog, I'm so sorry if you get asked this a lot--is the cut post-game location where Akechi is not a rehab?

Wow, I've just been through my index and it doesn't seem I've ever posted about this—so thank you for asking! Note that this is (hopefully) PART ONE of a two-part post; this is way overlong without me getting into my thoughts about this scene.

The scene we're talking about is a deleted scene where Akechi (offscreen, and clearly alive) is talking to two employees (onscreen), in what looks like a bathhouse. They gossip about his plans for the future, until he arrives in person to catch them out and put some things on record.

Here's the scene, with my translation. (page down for the text). Pay attention to how the, uh, man standing in the bath knows Akechi is outside all along, while the woman who comes in to gossip does not.

There are a lot of theories about this scene—where is it happening? when does it happen? what purpose does it serve?—not least because there are several different translations floating around. But we can tell quite a bit from the text. Quick summary, since this is a post and a half already:

The place Akechi checks in on 12/24, per this deleted scene, is not a rehab or hotel or hospital, but a type of refuge called a kakekomidera.

This scene takes place (probably) after school on 2/10, as the last of the string of confidant interventions between 2/4 and 2/13. As such, it represents the thing Akechi is doing for Joker to get him out of detention.

Let's take a look.

firstly, what is this place?

People have variously described the bathhouse in this scene as a rehab (no), a hotel or ryokan (no), a hospital (no) and a mental hospital (def Not). So what is it?

The scene tells us exactly what it is:

Gossipy Employee ⋯まあここは、俺らもそうだけど、スネに傷あるモンの駆け込み寺だ。 ... maa koko wa, orera mo sou da kedo, sune ni kizu aru mon no kakekomidera da [lit. well, this place is a kakekomidera for people with a guilty conscience, like us.]

what is a kakekomidera?

A 寺 tera is a Buddhist temple; it's the ji at the end of a lot of temple names. 駆け込む kakekomu means to seek refuge somewhere. So a kakekomidera is a temple where you seek refuge.

And that is the place Akechi has taken himself to: it's a refuge. It's a shelter, like a domestic violence shelter—somewhere you go when you're at the end of your rope, with nowhere to turn; when you're in danger. Somewhere he stayed as a child—with his mother, who was likewise in a perilous and vulnerable situation. Where he knows there are people who will take him in, no questions asked, after everything he's done. Who might even remember him.

Historically, a kakekomidera (like the one in the link) was a place women could go if their husbands were abusive; they entered religious service, and subsequently accessed divorce: "Temple records show that, during the Tokugawa period alone"—that's 1603–1857, often also called the Edo period—"an estimated 2,000 women sought shelter there."

Services called kakekomidera still exist today. They are often in temples—if you can stop by to talk to a monk about your problems and look for solutions, that's a kakekomidera. Online helpdesks are often called kakekomidera—you can look up a "Desktop Publishing kakekomidera" site, for instance.

English sources are usually all referencing the same organisation, Gen Hidemori's Nippon Kakekomidera in Shinjuku:

Gen opens the doors of his organization to all who are in dire straits, regardless of age, gender, income, or social status. Visitors to the office located in Tokyo’s infamous Kabukichō red-light district seek respite from domestic violence, pressing debt, and trouble with organized crime groups. Gen says he even sees gang members looking to make a clean break from the criminal underworld.

Does a kakekomidera do rehab-like things sometimes? Sure. They act as halfway houses for people leaving prison. They help people work through problems in their lives. But in English, a "rehab" is focused on rehabilitating people—after addiction, after illness or injury, after prison, during old age—and that is not what I think we should be picturing here.

I have not been able to track down a residential one like the one in the game, but hey, it's fiction. I wouldn't want to say, though, that they don't exist—don't forget the historical kakekomidera, where you entered service and stayed until you were ready to leave. Though this doesn't appear to be any sort of religious setting, I suspect it's not for nothing that Akechi is doing menial work around the place.

next, when does this scene take place?

The game code allows us to lock this scene almost down to the hour. This will get a little technical at points, so bear with me. You can easily skim past most of this.

Every event in P5 and P5R is numbered. They have two numbers: a major number, identifying the event, and a minor number, identifying part of the event. (You can get more granular than this, identifying individual lines of the script, but that's beyond our scope here.)

This deleted event of Akechi's is numbered E470_810. That is, it has a major number (identifying the event) of 470, and a minor number (identifying part of event 470) of 810.

what is event 470?

Event 470 is the collection of events that happen after Joker enters detention—that is, on 12/24 with Sae in vanilla, or on 2/4 after Maruki's boss fight in Royal.

You can probably see where this is going. Here's the list of events in event 470:

E470_001—[vanilla only] the sad Christmas Day meeting after Joker is arrested, where the PTs determine that this is super unfair and they should do something about it;

E470_101—[vanilla only] Joker's interrogation while detained;

E470_201—Sojiro's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_211—Takemi's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_301—Kawakami's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_311—Iwai's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_401—Mishima's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_411—Chihaya's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_501—Ohya's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_511—Yoshida's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_601—Shinya's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_611—Hifumi's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_701—Makoto's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_711—Sumire's intervention after Joker's arrest;

E470_810—Akechi's intervention after Joker's arrest.

The next event after that is E471_001, which is Sae meeting Joker in detention for his release on 2/13.

What does this list tell us? Well, mainly, this deleted scene of Akechi's, E470_810, was intended to play along with all those others up there; they're the same event, with the same major number, 470. It's not some random scene we can know nothing about; it has a context, and that context is that Akechi, just like the others, is working to get Joker out of detention. If this scene had been left in, it would have played along with all the other max-rank confidant scenes prior to 2/13.

You might have noticed that Akechi's scene is not quite grouped with the others—there is no E470_801, when the other confidant scenes move cleanly through Ex_x01 to Ex_x11 to Ex_x01 and so on. Whether that's because there's a missing event (storyboarded but never written?) or because he's not quite working with the others, or perhaps because it would have played out of sequence, like Makoto's (numbered last, originally, even though it played first)—we can't tell.

I did say we could lock this scene down almost to the hour, and that brings us to something called the scheduler:

where is event 470 in the scheduler? what is the scheduler?

The scheduler is a piece of code that tells the game engine what events to play on what day. If you want to know what triggers an event to play, the scheduler is a good first stop.

It's split into one file per month (SCHEDULER_04.BF through SCHEDULER_03.BF), and each month is split into a number of functions per day. Usually two functions play in the morning (early and mid-morning?) and five in the PM slot, which we can identify from the events that happen during them:

PM slot A—lunchtime. Includes e.g. the deleted lunch events;

PM slot B—midafternoon. Includes e.g. the chat events during the afternoon lesson;

PM slot C—after school. Includes e.g. Mishima's after-school confidant unlock in your homeroom;

PM slot D—evening. Includes e.g. Sae and Makoto's conversation over dinner before the hot pot party;

PM slot E—bed. Includes e.g. Joker's excursions to the Velvet Room.

In vanilla, the clock is visible for these confidant events, so we can see time passing; the events are also spread more widely through the day. In Royal, though, the clock is disabled for them, probably because they're so much closer together. But whether you consider these event times binding or not, we can still see exactly when they are—because the scheduler tells us so:

Sojiro (E470_201)—2/5 (Royal), 1/5 (vanilla), midafternoon;

Shinya (E470_601)—2/9 (Royal), 1/28 (vanilla), midafternoon;

Hifumi (E470_611)—2/9 (Royal), 1/31 (vanilla), after school;

Sumire (E470_711)—2/10 after school (Royal only).

Lastly, Sae always breaks Joker out during the midafternoon slot on 2/13, in both Royal and vanilla, just before Valentine's Day.

Is there anything notable in this huge swathe of data?

Three confidants changed their event slot in Royal, presumably to fit multiple events into one function on the same day: Takemi moved from midafternoon in vanilla to after school in Royal, Ohya moved from the evening slot to after school, and Yoshida moved from midafternoon to after school.

Iwai has two minor numbers, because he has two slightly different events—vanilla Iwai says "Make sure the guys in lock-up know not to let anyone lay a damn finger on him", while Royal Iwai does not!

Why was this line cut from Royal? Was Joker somehow in less danger in juvie? Well... vanilla places a lot more emphasis on Joker's detention. Rather than Akechi showing up on 12/24, Sae has a long digression about juvenile hall, and how awful it will be, and the consequences for Joker and his friends. Joker gets interrogated in detention and so on.

So maybe this line was there to build suspense, in vanilla—whereas in Royal, there's just no need, because everything has already happened.

what about akechi

OKAY SO. Getting back to the important stuff, what does all of that tell us about Akechi's deleted scene? Well, it lets us date it.

This scene does not appear to exist in vanilla, when Akechi is pretty definitively ?dead in January and February. It was added with Sumire's, for Royal—and then deleted from the scheduler, so that it's out of game. And in Royal, two events play every day—except on 2/10.

Only Sumire's event plays on 2/10. So we can stake a pretty good guess here that Akechi's event would have been paired with Sumire's event, the other Royal Trio event, in that after school time slot on 2/10.

Maybe it would have played on 2/11 or 2/12. Maybe it would have been like Makoto's event, and jumped out of the list to play elsewhen. But given that it's a reveal, I think it almost certainly would have played last (as its position in the event list suggests)—and 2/10 with Sumire seems like a good place for it.

lastly, what even is this scene

I'm attaching my translation of the scene beneath the cut, since it's been sitting in my Tumblr drafts forever and a day. Obviously this is hugely subject to error and not likely to be entirely correct—nonetheless, enjoy.

is there any in-game evidence that supports Akechi getting either Loki or Robin Hood first?

Hello! I've discussed this before here.

Tl;dr: though there's Word of God saying Akechi awoke to both personas at the same time, there probably still has to be an order—I hear something similar happens with the P3 protagonist, with one persona emerging from the other? Or like Protect and Endure, where Akechi learns both at the same time (at rank 10), but there is still an order to them.

During the third awakenings, the original base persona appears on the left, with the second awakening persona on the right. And in Akechi's, Robin Hood is on the left:

On top of that, the third awakenings are a glow-up of the original persona. Hereward is kind of a reverse glow-up (a dim-down??) of Robin Hood:

So I think Royal makes it pretty clear that Robin Hood is the base persona, and Loki the second awakening—regardless of the actual timing of those awakenings, of whether they happened on top of each other or years apart. Just like how, on the black mask suit, you can see the blue layer is the base layer, with the black stripes sewn over the top.

Akechi was not born evil—his circumstances made him so. His personas, and his outfit, reflect that.

You’re alienating people by only writing for “curvy” readers.

…Do you want me to apologize? Because I’m not going to.

If you’re not curvy or plus size or chubby or fat etc - you don’t understand the feeling of reading an x reader fic that is so clearly coded for someone in a thin body. It completely brings you out of the fic and reminds that you are not the person anyone would imagine with this or that character. It makes you feel like, oh yeah, duh! Of course this reader is thin! How could I ever imagine or try to pretend anyone bigger would be able to be loved or held or desired when they’re anything other than small or thin.

It fucking sucks. And it happens so often, I personally stopped reading fics for a while because it would be the most innocuous thing that would be like a punch to the gut when I’d be reading a cute or smutty fic that would make me feel awful about myself. Now I’m certain that’s not the author’s intention, but it sucks nonetheless.

And I know many will say that’s not the author’s problem, and I agree!, up until they tag their fics as “x reader” with absolutely no warning that their body will be described in some way or form. But still, it’s their fic, they can do whatever the hell they want to do.

And so can I!

The entire reason I started writing fic myself is because I wanted to see more fics that were written with my body type in mind. That is why I tag all my fics “curvy!reader”, even if they’re not explicitly described in writing. Because when I write, that’s the body I have in mind. I won’t not tag a fic “curvy!reader” even if their body isn’t talked about at all and if that alienates some people, then so be it. I want curvy readers to know this was written with them in mind, simple as that.

There are plenty other fics out there and plenty more talented writers than I who have libraries full of x reader fics.

If you don’t want to read a fic because it’s tagged as curvy!reader, that is completely your choice. As I have stated in my masterlist, my fics are written with curvy readers in mind, but of course everyone and anyone of any shape or size is welcome to read them - they just don’t explicitly cater to thin bodied people. 🤷🏻‍♀️

He'll even buy you the things you love so much! He'll even refrain from saying stuff about his sister, because he will think it will bring your confidence more down

You were sitting in bed, just scrolling on your phone until you heard your boyfriend voice."Y/n!~" the bedroom door opened, revealing Yuri. You looked at him in shocked.

"Aren't you supposed to be at work at this time?" You turned off your phone and was about to get up from the bed, but Yuri walked towards you.

"Yeah, but I wanted to be with you, so I got off a little early!" He opened his arms and laid his body against yours. His face was laying on your chest, you use one hand to run your fingers through his hair and the other rubbing his back.

"But isn't your job more important?"

"Nothing is more important than you, Y/n. I love you and everyday you keep making me fall for you over and over again." He tried to hide his red face from you. You start to feel your own face getting warm.

"Yuri..." You tried to say something to him but nothing won't come out.

"Nothing and no one can't be the perfect match for me, but you..."

There was silence between you two for a moment. You smiled.

I think that Yuri is against the whole marriage thing mostly because the excuse of "i'm married since a year and didn't tell you before and even LIED to you about it, sorry (lol)" that Yor told him.

After all at the beginning, when Yor tells him (lies to him), saying she may see someone, he's happy about it. So it's not the fact that she found someone who bother him but the whole mistery around the marriage and that his sister didn't tell him for a whole year.

It can be pretty suspect for anyone and even more for someone whose the job is to NOT trust people :/

It was not the best start to start to know Loid and appreciate him ^^"

Yeah. As necessary as it was for Loid to have the "we married a year ago, definitely not just for the interview!" excuse, it ended up making the marriage look super suspicious to everyone else.

Now, as far as the fandom is concerned, I think people are too used to stories being poorly written and certain characters being so creepy, that they're not prepared to see the brilliance with which Endo handled Yuri's dynamic. Yes Yuri is a little obsessed with his sister, but it's made understandable due to the circumstances under which they grew up in, and he is willing to accept her getting married. However, that very obsession is there to produce conflict for Loid and Yor, and it's handled with a very delicate balance where it enriches Yuri's personality without making him a creep.

Honestly, I think people misunderstand both his "When I grow up I'm going to marry you" and how he latched onto Yor saying she'd wait up for him. The first one is a thing a lot of little kids tell their parents, older siblings, or any form of caretaker, or even their peers. They know that "marriage" is a form of showing how much you love someone, but they don't know how romantic love works yet, so they connect marriage even with familial or platonic love. So in their minds, telling someone "I want to marry you" just means "I love you very much", and in their age, that can only be familial or platonic love.

About the second, I think Yuri had a moment of ShockTM when he saw Yor about to kiss Loid, not because he felt she was betraying her "promise" to wait up for him, but because reality was very suddenly drilled into him.

It's like when you sit and have a striking realization about real life. Things like "I'm not getting any younger" or "The world is fucked up" or even "That thing that happened to me was actually traumatic". You go by in your life hearing that stuff, and automatically understand them, but you may have a moment of actual realization when you're like oh. Shit. This is Real.

And I think this is what happened with Yuri here. He didn't actually think Yor would marry him, but it was a kind of "dream" that he subconsciously had, probably in the form of "I will always be the one she puts first". So he might have felt secure in that thought, but right then, when he saw Yor almost kiss Loid, that dream/thought was very suddenly pulled from under his feet. He had his "I'm not getting any younger" realization. But because his emotional state is... how it is, instead of taking a moment to self-reflect and just think, he lashed out and tried to protect that safe space he'd built in his mind.

Honestly, he's a very interesting character because he provides conflict while being layered on his own. He's very well written and developed, and it can be very easy for audiences to fall in the trap of calling him a "creep obsessed with his sister" if they don't look a little deeper.

Yuri has been babysitting Anya lately and to your surprise. Yuri has been warming up to her.

He always help her study even though it's useless. He'll give her piggyback rides and he even gave her his own ice cream when she drop hers.

But in the back of your mind, you've been thinking it's because of Yor, but that has been cut out of your mind when Yuri spoke to you when he came back home.

"Y/N I want kids. I want to have 3 of them! 2 girls 1 boy, or should it be 2 boys 1 girl?"

He kept talking about having kids and it have kicked you to an fantasy thought

Honestly, if Yor and the Secret Police ever butted heads, Yuri wouldn't even feel betrayed like "oh no, I can't believe my sister was an assassin this whole time!" I think he's just immediately quit like "huh. I guess the secret police are evil then."

YURI BRIAR fic where you are a teacher at eden academy and you meet yuri when he stands in for yor and loid (they both had missions!) during a parent-teacher meeting. he agrees because yor asked (loid also asked but yuri said no) and because maybe his niece is kinda dumb and cute. when he gets to anya’s class, he meets you, anya’s botany teacher. he doesn’t think much of you because you’re just another teacher in this pretentious academy anyway. 

but then he starts to see you everywhere??? the local launderette he frequents to (the old lady behind the counter doesn’t ask about the blood on his clothes), his favourite bakery (the salesboy is an informant), the park just outside his house (ideal spot for reconnaissance) and he’s convinced you’re either a stalker or a spy. 

so one day, when yuri bumps into you at the bookstore, he corners you near the shelves and is like: 

 “alright fess up, you’re stalking me, aren’t you?” 

and you are beyond confused because you keep seeing him everywhere as well so you poke his chest and say “i’m not????????? and how do i know you aren’t stalking me huh?”

yuri doesn’t know what to say at first because you’re so vastly different from the quiet botany teacher from eden academy. he makes a face at you and leaves the bookstore with a “don’t follow me!” 

(and he hates, god, he hates the way he’s curious now)

unfortunately, a few days later, yuri discovers that you live in the same apartment complex. a horrible, horrible discovery because he’s tired from work and not only has his launderette and bakery been taken over by you, but now his home as well?! 

you spot him walking to the entrance as well and make the briefest eye contact before a resounding “ugh” leaves the two of you. 

at first, he hates knowing that you’re just two floors above him. he hates that you leave home the same time as he does, that you take the same route to the bus stop, that you take the same bus, that you like the same seed crusted bread. it’s too much and yuri is Not for it. but then he sees you crying on the front steps one day after your lover breaks up with you. and and you leave water and medicine outside his door the night he comes home drunk. and you invite him for dinner one night because “i made too much okay. stop talking and just enjoy the food" 

and you (reluctantly? yuri thinks he’s definitely reluctant) celebrate new years’ together. yuri brings you slices of cake after work and crashes on your couch. the two of you are spending more and more time in each other’s homes that one day, during breakfast, you say “hey, want to move in together? you already know how i like my coffee and it’d be cheaper” 

and so you move in together but you’re friends and yuri thinks its weird but he thinks it’s weirder that he’s happy about it. and even weirder that he doesn’t rage at the thought of loid with his sister (he does still huff about it and glare at him but it’s an improvement!) but what baffles him the most is how comfortable he is with you and how it’s been a long time since he’s lived with someone other than his sister. it’s weird, yuri is convinced that there is something unnatural about this arrangement but seeing you every morning (bed head and all) fills his chest with light. 

the new sxf chapter made me realize that yuri (despite being the annoying piece of shit he is) is literally a child stuck in a grown man's body.

he saw his sister sacrifice so much for him and the only solution he could think of was to grow up fast so he could protect her, so she wouldn't have to carry any burdens. he didn't let himself enjoy his own childhood, he was too blinded by his want to protect the only family he has.

i think his attachment issues literally just show him being protective of her bc they're both not used to interacting with other people. i'm guessing yor went out a lot more bc of work and yuri just usually stayed home to study despite his sister working for him to enjoy life.

yor probably thought that yuri was playing with other kids while she was gone, yuri probably thinks his sister is getting hurt somewhere bc she always comes home covered in blood, which led him to believe that there are ppl outside their home--dangerous ppl who will hurt the only family he has left.

yuri's constantly in fear of ppl taking away his sister away from him and potentially hurt her in the process, which i think is the reason why he doesn't like loid. he knows that yor has a partner and is okay with it, what he isn't okay with is the fact yor and loid have been secretly married for a year without his knowledge, which does give off a distasteful impression.

i'm hoping to learning more about the briar siblings' backstory in the later chapters since i feel like there's a lot to unpack and their behavior would finally make sense. all we can do for now is think of the possibilities.

About Yuri:

Funny thing is that most of us fans are expecting this arc to be the 'Yuri's redemption' arc…. And so…. was something like this…. or so. —I end up as a cry baby after being shot for saving the chihuahua girl- Honestly It's hard to expect that this arc was going to represent such an abrupt change. In SxF the characters suffer from a slow and steady process, at least the Forger's are like that…. So, Yuri will take a while to show the best (or worst) of himself.

One interesting thing about Yuri's character, —at least to me- is that you don't necessarily have to like him, in fact, it can be enjoyable to watch him squirm in frustration and pain when he fails (sabotaging Twiyor) because most of the time he's a huge jerk.

I think Yuri's purpose is to explore how negative country influences can brainwash vulnerable young people even if their intentions are genuinely noble. In the end they fill their brains with a bunch of propagandist garbage in exchange for them working for the government and helping them stay in power. That is, a person's genuine feelings about protecting a family can be severely influenced by the social and political context.

Seen that way, Yuri IS a victim of the war, and he is a rather weak prey, who instead of being seen as someone directly hurt by the government, works for them and is congratulated for his labor…. So, Yuri is not portrayed as a tragic being, with whom you feel sorry despite his bad actions (Like Billy with Red Circus), but on the contrary, you want to give him a good kicking.

However, despite all the negative things Endo exposes about Yuri (which is too much) he shows that he still has a good side to rescue: the love he feels for Yor (as twisted as it is) is a genuine love and superior to any order of the SSS. Because Yuri doesn't care about his government he cares about his sister, his only family.

The biggest problem… perhaps… is that the way Yuri sees his relationships outside of Yor, is very much influenced by the Ostanian mentality of gaining power, to supposedly protect his country (his sister)… when all he is really protecting is the stay of one group of people in control of a country

Endo always punishes Yuri for his bad actions, always looking for us to see him with a weirdo that causes heartburn because he....is very broken. But he also takes care to show us that underneath that mountain of awkward weirdness there is a good person…. even if he doesn't show it very often and so far it's only towards Yor

Yuri's head is full of garbage… governmental garbage and very wrong ideas about protecting

If we recall, a major basis for Yuri is his childhood, as he claims to "hate himself for feeling useless", for being a burden to Yor —Because, Yor doesn't work for her, he works for him— That's why he became obsessed with being an outstanding student and holding a position to repay all the work she did for him.

So Yuri's goal was to become someone important who has a lot of power to obtain the supposed power to protect his sister, (or so he wants to believe). But in Ostania the only way to be powerful is through economic and political means. Yuri and Yor were poor and orphans, therefore, being a military policeman gives him enough political and social power (from the shadows).

The lie is that the power of the SSS is not to protect its sister, not to protect its inhabitants, not even to protect a group of children imprisoned by terrorists. The SSS only protects the political leaders and their stay in power at the expense of the innocent.

Ostania's policy is repressive, violent and cruel -Violence is power, violence controls, intimidates and eliminates whoever crosses your path.. Creating the idea of the evil world outside and inside its borders, everyone is trash and that if something bad happens to them it is because they surely deserve it. The government is supposed to be the good guy, because it protects, but it only protects itself.

His intentions are genuine but his methods are going in entirely the wrong direction. Yuri wants to do what is 'necessary' to create a safer world for his sister but the power he has and is wielding does not create a more peaceful world, but a more violent, hostile and resentful one.

But he has not yet understood the difference

The most interesting thing in Yuri's possible evolution is to find the difference between what he actually protects and the way he does it. He can't make the world safer for his sister if he can't even make the world safer for a child...And the SSS way is definitely not!!

So Yuri is a huge idiot Yes! …. but he still has the capacity to change for the better (or worse). Knowing that he felt a shred of empathy for the slanderer because he showed he cared about his family, and especially... He genuinely went to help save Anya (for Yor), his will for his niece is very weak, but at least I think it's a little seed change for the non-favorite uncle

Count Briar | Yandere Yuri Briar

“Hi, there! You must be Yor’s baby brother! She’s told me all about you, come on in!” 

Being greeted by an unfamiliar person in the home he both cursed and loved as the house of his sister wasn’t something Yuri Briar was prepared for. He had a clear goal this time around. Tutor Loid’s spawn, bug the rooms, and see if there is any evidence of Loid’s trickery. 

“Well don’t just stand there silly! Anya, why don’t you bring your uncle in while I finish this cake!” 

“Okay!” 

He needed to focus! Analyze this new enemy and try to find flaws! But it was so hard when you so eagerly fed him delicious cake. Not to mention you were smiling so sweetly at him. No he had to make sure you weren’t a spy! Begin the interrogation! 

“So what made you worthy enough to be in my sister’s home?” 

“Well it's kind of in my title silly! I’m Anya and Bond’s nanny!” 

You giggled setting aside a cake for yourself, Anya, and Bond. Yuri kept his eyes on your every move, just waiting for you to slip up. Not because he couldn’t stop looking at you. Nope! Definitely because your smile was too bright and that must have been a devious tactic from an enemy like you. 

“(Y/n)-sama! Let us begin our mission!” 

“Yes, Anya-sama it is time!” 

“W-what?!” 

With a flap of the cape she was wearing, Anya was revealed to wear layers of clothes of various unmatching patterns. Bond too was wearing a hat that resembled one of a cowboy and a cape that he was currently trying to eat. He turned to you for some semblance of an understanding only to find that you were in an elaborate costume yourself with something akin to a masquerade mask. On guard, he stood up until you so easily pushed at his chest with gloved hands as you chuckled. It wasn’t because the soft push at his chest rendered him an overheating mess…definitely not. 

“I thought Yor would have told you! We’re trying something new to encourage Anya to study. Now you're the count I have to seduce to get codes from!”

“W-what?!” 

“Here Unkie takes this, those are the codes they have to get! But you can’t give it right away!”

He stood up again. He was putting his foot down and stopping whatever effect you were having on him. 

“No! I’m not doing this! I told Yor I’d–”

He stopped at the unsettling silence in the room. Anya’s face was slowly contorting and you had removed your mask to look worriedly at her before flicking your hypnotizing eyes back at his. It was too much with you looking directly into his eyes with that pouty look on your face felt like a direct attack. Heart pumping as he watched your puffy delectable lips turn into a pout and your eyes droop. This pressure! There was only one way he could evade this and the unshed tears welling in Anya’s eyes spoke of one thing—!

“Fine. But after this we get right to studying.”

Tears gone and your smile returned, everyone continued to prepare for the game that you were all about to play. Sitting back down and wearing the accessory he had been given beforehand. Finishing quickly he watched as you dawned your mask once more retrieving the cut slices as you placed them on the table. Joining him on the couch he watches you clear out your voice before turning and speaking to him in an accent that wasn’t your own. 

“Thank you for inviting us Count Briar, me and my associates are so happy we could attend your costume tea-party!” 

He stood there holding your gaze before receiving a not-so subtle kick from under the table. Kirking your head in hopes to urge him he realized what exactly you were trying to get from him. 

“Uh uh yes I’m so happy you could come uh-”

“The Countess of the Acrobatics.”

“Uh–yeah and you uhm Any–”

“Princess of Peanuts!”

“Yes and Bond-”

“Bodyguard Bond!” 

“Right, yes thank you for bringing the cake, then.” 

“Of course it's the least we could do. After all you do have those cherry bombs sitting on the Candy Kingdom.”

“Do I–? Augh! Yes! I do!” Receiving another kick, he fixed his response. Realizing how hard this was for him, he tried his hardest. After all, he wouldn't want to let you down. Wait, he meant Yor if she were ever to hear about his lacking acting skills. 

He continued to maintain this character, learning through you and Anya’s dialogue that he was a Count looking to force the Candy Kingdom to give all their candy to him with his cherry bombs. Apparently the King you were working for was deathly allergic to cherries and therefore required that you two–their spies get the codes to disarm the bombs. 

Even with your previous revelation of your tactic he couldn’t be prepared for your ‘seduction’ in the slightest. Slowly scooting closer to him on the couch was the first step, already bringing a slight blush as he realized what you were doing. It escalated when you let your shoulders touch. You must have been incredibly hot because the moment you touched, he was in desperate need of some cooling off. Unfortunately, he couldn’t leave especially since Bond–er Bodyguard Bond was eyeing his slice. In the next part, you offered to feed him the rest of his slice of cake. 

“Say, ‘ahh’!”

“A-ah.”

Letting his mouth close around your fork he tried to look away from your eyes once more. Failing miserabley as he not only could see your face clearly but the oddly revealing bits your costume had. 

“I got it, (Y/n) now keep distracting him.”

The not so silent whisper allowed him to break away looking at Anya, easily making away with the paper that was in his pocket.  

“Uh oh, it looks like you have some cake on your face, Count Briar! I’ll get it for you.”

Were-were you going to kiss him?! So soon?! He wasn’t prepared for this! The only kiss he’s ever received like this is from Yor! Would this be his first kiss?! 

“Ah-W-wait-?!”

“Got it.” 

With a swipe of your thumb from the corner of his lips the point of contention was gone. All he could do was overheat in embarrassment excitement as he watched you sit back to happily lick the frosting away before pridefully striking a pose. 

“Waku waku Count Briar we’ve stolen your codes and therefore our mission is complete.” 

“Yayy we did it! Victory hugs!” 

Yuri watched bewildered as you did a dance with her; moving Bond in tandem with your movements. Completely oblivious to the crisis he could only recover from as he huffed to get everyone’s attention. 

“A-alright now we study.” 

“Awww but (Y/n) didn’t even do the kiss!” 

Yuri stopped feeling an immense sense of being cheated that he couldn’t quite place. You shrugged as you began to take off Anya and Bond’s costumes.

“Sorry Anya but it's not cool to take your Unkie’s kisses! Now let’s get ready to study!”

Yuri pushed these thoughts away as he focused on coaching Loid’s near illiterate spawn as you did chores around their home. Every now and then he let himself stare because this would most certaintly not be the first time he’d find you. He’d figure out why you made him feel this way. 

Just you wait.

Part 2: ?

I feel like one of the best ways Spy x Family presents its anti-war sentiment is how it presents the other side, the side that any lesser media would present simply as "the enemy".

Yuri is an interesting case, because he's not the average "Ostania 4 evur!" type of supremacist - and considering the target audience for this show is very much NOT nationalists and supremacists, this is a very smart move. What we've seen (in the anime) up to now from him, he's not in it because he believes Ostania is supreme for some reason - his only reason to work so hard in its service is because his sister lives in it. Sis lives in Ostania, I shall dedicate myself to Ostania! And while it's taken to an extreme, it's still way easier to relate to wanting to protect a beloved family member than to fucking nationalism.

And yet, even though we can understand why he's protective of Yor, we're not supposed to relate to the lengths he's taking that protection - either by being possessive of her or by wanting to take down Twilight. We saw Twilight's point of view, we know why he does what he does. It's his journey we follow - but then we see the other side. A young man who believes that this Twilight wants to make the world fall into chaos. Our immediate reaction is "No, he doesn't, you're an asshole and you should stop going after him!" but then you take a step back and think, hol'up. He's twenty. He idealizes his sister and his main reason for joining the secret services is to protect her and the country she lives in. Of course he would have been exposed to propaganda about how Westalis is filth and how its spies only want to destroy the beautiful world we have established as Good Ostanian PeopleTM. He's as much of a victim of it as anyone else in the country. And because of that, he not only opposes the character whose goal we're supposed to root for - he calls him a villain and his natural enemy.

The humanization of the "other side" is presented brilliantly here, because again, no extremist will watch this show and relate to it. People who love their family will. So making the antagonist's motivation be his love for his sister (even if it's to the extreme) is how it works to make the audience understand that war is not a natural instinct of humans; that even people who love their family, people like us, can be brainwashed into supporting war.

Our "enemy" is not the "other side"; it's the dehumanization of people, the propaganda and the lies the higher-ups promote in order to keep their high positions. And when we lose sight of that, we lose part of our humanity and understanding.

Listen to me: the actual person to get over protective of anya if she and damian ever date would be Yuri
