The shot of Anne’s image being refracted as she looks through a window is a lovely visual metaphor, for this episode. This ep has a neat subtext where its dividing Anne through that prism - showing us who she was, who she is, and who she may end up becoming.

You have child Anne, the abandoned, lonely young girl.

You have our current Anne, desperately trying to find her place in the world.

You have echoes of a future Anne in Rose - a woman of imagination, who fits in a winking sense of rebellion into the idea of courtship.

You have Miss Stacy, who is a free-spirit like Anne, but mature and self-assured in her uniqueness.

When other characters see these echoes of Anne in other people, whether knowingly (Matthew) or unknowingly (Gilbert) they find the similarities charming.

Listen y’all, here’s the tea. Gilbert Blythe is a young man who likes to do things for all the right reasons. He takes care of his father when he’s ill because he loves him and it’s the right thing to do. He becomes passionate about medicine to serve people and end pain, even the pain for marginalized people whom no one will treat. He’s not racist and he’s supportive of the women in his life because he recognizes that they rightly deserve respect. 

So naturally, Gilbert Blythe wants to court a nice girl that looks like the ideal woman any doctor might have. She’s got a pleasant family, she presumably comes from money, and has connections to a big fancy medical college. Aside from the fact that she’s not as colorful as Anne is, she’s really quite lovely and good for him. He can see nothing bad about courting Winifred, but can probably think of a few reasons not to court Anne (ruining their friendship, assuming she wouldn’t like him, etc). 

But if there’s anything I know about Gilbert, it’s that his heart belongs on the island. That’s just where it has to live. Winifred’s family might be nice, but the Cuthberts will always be family just a little bit more. There might be connections to a good college, but he’s going to succeed to great heights at Queen’s and be satisfied there. And as lovely as Winifred is, she’s not Anne. Gilbert Blythe will be a good country doctor, a father of seven children, and a loyal husband. He will love that life for himself. I don’t think he’d have it any other way.

Anne isn’t the only one with ideals, and Gilbert has to realize his aren’t what he expected. Once he realizes that, I think he’s going to free himself to love Anne and his home the way he has all along.

So she will be taking a train ride alone with Gilbert back and forth to Nova Scotia. They’re gonna have time to talk and fall in love and what kind of fanfic BULLSHIT IS THIS THEY REALLY BE BLESSING US THIS SEASON
