You pull yourself out from the water and wrap yourself in your favorite baby blue towel. Checking the time, you realize you’ve spent longer than you meant in the pool. Must’ve been the stress. At least you now have an excuse to call.

It goes straight to message. “Hey, hi. Sorry, I’m just calling to let you I’m gonna be a little late tonight. My swim went a bit longer than planned, and I still have to run all those errands so yeah. And well, uh, I just also wanted to say sorry for, well, this past week frankly. But especially this morning, I don’t know, I was really snappy and um, I’m sorry. You didn’t deserve that from me. Okay anyways, I’ll see you when I get back. And just yeah, I’m sorry.”

a/n; I wrote this through my eyes, and I’m a very tough looking and acting person, I’m not scared of the dark or anything, but when things pop out and jump scare me I turn into a baby so yeah it’s through those eyes I hope that’s ok

It was your favorite time of the year…

HALLOWEEN!!

During this time, you and Seungcheol did all the normal October festivities. Pumpkin carving, decorating the apartment, and so on.

The one thing you guys never did was go into a haunted house. The both of you weren’t exactly scared of the costumes or the gore, more so the jumping out factor. Of course in previous years, you would both try and act tough and urge the other to go in and even make fun of each other for ”chickening out”, but deep down you both knew that you were too scared to even step a foot in.

This year was different though, both of you had made a promise last year that you would try to get through at least one haunted house this Halloween. You guys were not about to break that promise and take the punishment of eating a dried ghost pepper chip.

So here you guys stood hand in hand, Seungcheol in his spider-man costume and you in your witch ensemble, in front of the local high school haunted house.

”come on y/n, it can’t be that bad. See look 1st graders are coming out of that thing.” Seungcheol said forcing a brave chuckle.

”y-yeah, it can’t be that bad. B-but I’m scared..”

“I’ll be right here babe, it’s ok it’s just a child’s haunted house.”

The nerves had wrecked your brain so much that you hadn’t even noticed that you guys were next in the queue. Seungcheol gave your tickets to a girl dressed as Pikachu, how ironic seeing a cute character as soon as you were gonna walk into straight up nightmare fuel. Barely a minute later and you guys hear an oh so creepy but oh so funny voice of a student dressed as a grim reaper call ”follow me to a world of hellish nightmares…

You clung onto your boyfriend’s arm so tights you were sure there would be nail marks left behind.

” it’s just a hallway” you kept telling yourself.

The grim reaper led you guys a little further down the hall and you followed him past black party streamers hanging from the ceiling. As soon as the reaper had appeared, he vanished. Then you felt a pair of hands on your shoulder, you screamed so loud the people outside must’ve been sure the haunted house was terrifying.

You held onto Seungcheol even tighter if that was even possible. He took this as a sign to walk faster. As you guys basically speed walked through the hallway which seemed a lot longer than most, you shut your eyes so tight you began getting a headache. All you could do was listen and follow your boyfriend when he screamed you screamed and at some point, you guys just began hugging.

He soon stopped walking, “baby open your eyes, it’s over”

You hesitantly opened your eyes. You sighed deeply and hugged Seungcheol so tight once again.

“Baby, can we go home now? I know we haven’t gotten candy or anything but I’m mentally checked out, I just wanna cuddle and watch non-scary movies” you said as you guys walked to the car.

“Of course baby, honestly I would’ve said it if you didn’t” he pecked your lips before speeding off.

Everything rushed back to you through chance. A worn out photo. Taken two, no, three years ago — it was in the park, or just outside your old high school, maybe China — details were fuzzy, but did it really matter?

“Junhui, hurry up! We’ll miss the ferry!”

“We have plenty of time… Oh crap it’s leaving — run, RUN!”

You stare at the picture, a gasp stuck in your throat.

Your fingers run over the shiny photo, brushing the cheek of the boy you can recite his secrets from, his long haircut never making you fail to laugh, a simpler time when dreams and promises were on your mind. 

“We’ll be together until the end, right?”

“If that’s what you want Junhui, I won’t mind.”

Promises with him, to stay with him.

You just… Fell apart.

As days passed by, you waited for him longer. He wasn’t answering texts when you needed him the most, and when you’d stay up for nights to just get one message you only faced with disappointment.

No, you weren’t sad. Maybe he was busy. Maybe he couldn’t pick up at the moment. Maybe he was going through something too. You ignored the small matter, it wasn’t it was like a big deal anyway. No one needed to know.

“Are you busy next weekend?”

“Kinda, it’s evaluation week for my company, sorry.”

“Oh,”

“I’ll make it up to you!”

A point came where Junhui wasn’t telling you things, which hurt the first time you heard, but you kept mute, no one needs to know.

You would hear news from his other friends — yet you were supposed to be the one to hear about this, not them — they didn’t know Junhui like you knew him.

Life became harder when you had other matters that weighed you down, stones piling behind your back one by one until it felt numb. Sure, you had no one to run to, but no one needed to know.

Yet all the things that pent up inside reach it’s limit and stupidly, very stupidly, you dial a number off by heart as if it was second nature.

“Hello?”

“Junhui, I…” Say something. Say something. “Sorry,” you sniff, “I just realised I’m calling for nothing. Sorry for wasting your time.”

“You’re worth every second of my time.”

Your heart stops at the words, scared — terrified — to believe them. He wasn’t even in the country anymore, he was in Korea to chase his dream and you allowed it to happen.

“I think I’m just tired,” easily you excuse, biting a lip to conceal the tears brimming, “I’ll call you about it next time. Night.”

You never called him after that.

And the boy who you kept close to your heart was now known publicly as Wen Junhui of SEVENTEEN. One quick search and pages about him would pop up within seconds. 

He looked like your Junhui, smiled like your Junhui, but was he still yours?

Now his members probably more know about him more than you knew him, he probably had you long forgotten just how was during your withering youth together, drifting away when entering adulthood.

Together until the end. What a bunch of broken promises shattered to the floor.

If you had the chance to go back, you would, to explain the stupid worries in your head, to confess the things going on in your life, to admit the jealousy within when his friends would grow closer and left you as his last option.

You would go back in hopes that it would change everything.

However the chance was late, you know why? No one needed to know.

Bittersweet; your first love was as close as a stranger.

 Here you are outside the restaurant about to book it to the nearest bus stop. At first, when Seokmin said he’d introduce you to his friends you thought it would be a great opportunity to get to know him better but at the moment you were a bundle of nerves.

  You guys had started dating about a month ago after he asked for your number in a philosophy lecture. He was handsome and he had kind eyes and a blinding smile, of course, you texted him as soon as possible. 

  Now here you are outside a barbeque restaurant after saying you were “going to the bathroom”. You were so anxious you couldn’t stay in that place a second longer, you made a skillful escape while everyone was talking. I mean how couldn’t you be anxious, they were his friends for years, you’ve only just met him. Part of the nervousness was set in the fact that they weren’t all male, there were a few female colleagues who you thought were absolutely stunning. You saw how happy he was, it made you smile. Suddenly he caught your gaze, very confused he said something and came outside.

“Fancy seeing you here ma’am, this isn’t the ladies room if I recall.”

“I’m sorry, I’m really nervous, I know it’s really stupid but I just wanna go home. I’m sorry Seok...”

“Why? Did someone say something? I swear if Jeong-”

“No one did anything Seok, I just- this is all very new. And I mean your friends are so pretty and I’m not jealous, I think? I felt out of place...”

“Ok and just so you know you were the prettiest babe” he said as he calmly took out his phone, it made you blush.

He grabbed your hand and you guys walked to the nearest rest stop which was only a block away.

“I texted Jeonghyun that were leaving because you felt sick” he said as the last bus of the night stopped before you two. 

He tugged your hand as you two sat down, the only ones on the bus beside you guys were the bus driver and a few middle schoolers who were probably on their way home from cram school.

He put his hand over your shoulder. “I met you on a bus...” he spoke quietly.

“No, you didn’t. We met at that one lecture.”

“You met me there. But I clearly remember you a few days before that, you were sat on the bus and smiled like an idiot as you put your headphones in. At that moment I thought that I wanted to make you smile like that everyda-”

“Pphffffff” you slowly slapped his face as he finished making him chuckle and you smiled.

“It’s true! See that smile? That’s the one! The one I love to see when I wake up and kiss you awake.”

“You idiot..” you laughed as you rested your head on his shoulder as you dozed off. Your hands intertwining and lights quickly passing by.
