Early on in the game, they get ambushed by 3 careers, and Billy ends up fighting off 2, but Max ends up nearly getting stabbed by the male tribute from District 2 (where she got her wepons). Lucas makes himself known and killed the male tribute from behind and joins an alience with the siblings.

Once the pool is down to the final 7 (them included), a mutation is released into the arena, where Billy ends up sacrificing himself so that Max and Lucas can run. Max watched him die and went nearly insane with pain and anger and ended up taking out the other 4 tributes on her own, with Lucas trying to keep her from falling apart.

Obviously, lumax happens throughout their time in the arena. When he joined the alience, he admitted to following the siblings trying to find a way to ally with them, Max starts to call him stalker after that. Later, Max ended up taking out a tribute from District 5 as they tried to steal from them, which is when Lucas started calling her madmax.
