“Y/N, could I ask you something?”

Alex asks hesitantly, sitting down next to you on the couch. You look up from your book with a frown. Alex is never this serious. Usually he’ll fall on top of you, asking whatever the hell he wants. It’s one of the many things you love about him.

“Are you leaving me?”

Alex shakes his head, chuckling at your response. Slightly calming both your and his nerves.

“No, no, never, my love! Uhm… It’s just, uhm… I don’t know how to say this.”

24- Let Them Come

It was eerily quiet, not at all like the yelling from earlier.

As soon as they entered the hall, Ivar stomped over to his council chambers without a second glance at anyone, Bjorn following behind him. Hvitserk remained with his two brothers as a sort of peacemaker.

The rest stayed out in the main hall, keeping warm by the large fire pit in the center. There was an awkwardness that lingered about, and Artemis wanted to defuse it immediately.

“You may sit by the fire if you’d like. Get yourself and the children warm.” She says to Torvi. The older woman nods, guiding her babbling children to sit upon the floor. Artemis sighs, turning to see Ubbe hesitating to say something, his lips parting and closing like a hungry fish.

“Artemis,” He says finally, “It is good to see you.”

“Likewise.” She replies with a small smile, and he nods, the corner of his lips curving upward. Even after all this time he seems to have retained his gentle heart. Before she could say anything more he heads down the corridor and into the council chambers.

The gods had blessed their journey with fair weather.

The mountainous skyline was finally in their line of vision after months of travel. The sun followed them, searing them through their wool lined clothes. Most of the men grumbled, removing the layers of heated fabric and leather to find some relief under the sweltering heat.

The water was bluer than Artemis remembered, the colorful fish swimming beside their ships as if greeting them. Their surroundings were vivid and full of color, far from the gray skies that dominated the sky in Norway. The Mediterranean skies were full of unimaginable life.
