"You are dripping on my lovely new floor," said Rafal. Rhian blinked at the black stone tiles, grimy and thick with soot.

Rafals Vulcan Song Had A Cadence And He Often Gets The Snappier Bits Of Dialogue In The Whole Of The

Rafal’s Vulcan song had a cadence and he often gets the snappier bits of dialogue in the whole of the narrative, with how he snipes at and condemns others verbally. Thus, all this is to say: he’s clearly capable of doing more than delivering seductive lines or individually-tailored appeals to victims when he wants to, and has something to gain.

But, what about those instances in which he has nothing to gain, either in more concrete dealings or in collecting others' trust, only to shatter it once he's done with them? That's where the strange, directionless whimsy comes in. (Albeit, the Vulcan song did serve a purpose in-narrative, as he was the distraction to Rhian's infiltration, so that probably isn't the best example, but I think there are quite a few smaller moments of his whimsy leaking through, essentially, a sense of humor from someone whose sense of humor probably appears dead to most that do not know him on a personal level, meaning, just about nearly everyone.)

We know he has a quick wit as far as manipulation and general trickery go (for reference, see his clever "pay your weight in gold" line around Fall's climax), but he also has a distinctly quick verbal wit, the one that seemingly only comes out to play when he has something or someone to mock for no apparent reason other than to amuse himself in mean spirits. I really appreciate that character trait. I forgot about purposeless, largely aimless whimsy—well, even if his aim is often just to jab at others.

That’s it. That’s the post. Clear out everyone. Unless anyone would like to add anything?

Ok, so... I was the one who submitted this question, and currently the poll results are at 80% "No," 15% "Yes," and 5% "See results." And that's absolutely hilarious to me, even though I expected it to happen because I selected the most "innocent" looking picture I could find of him.

Therefore, I'm going to introduce propaganda to see where this goes:

Despite being a character from a children's book, Rafal is an IMMORTAL EVIL SORCERER and a MURDERER!

If anyone would like to take me up on this offer, you could send me an ask with an excerpt from any completed fic of mine, and I'll gladly explain my thought process behind the excerpt! Or, if you'd rather not chose an excerpt, you could send in a specific question instead.

(Also, I might possibly do an analysis post for my most recent whump fic, "Salt and Storybook"—although it's perfectly fine if the excerpt you chose is from that one.)

In addition, this offer will always stand for any and all future fics I may write.

Fanfic Writers: Director’s Cut

Reblog this if you want readers to come into your ask box and ask for the “director’s commentary” on a particular story, section of a story, or set of lines.

Or, send in a ⭐star⭐  to have the author select a section they’ve been dying to talk about!
