This Deserves A Reblog. With Blackouts Becoming More Likely Due To The Switch To Greener Energy And Countries
This deserves a reblog. With blackouts becoming more likely due to the switch to greener energy and countries being cheep-ass lets save money no matter what attitude I totally recommend preparing for yourself.
I dont really like making rebloggable posts but I haven’t seen anyone mention them yet: terracotta heaters are really easy and effective DYI heaters for cold emergencies and I think it might be helpful considering, you know
TDLR, place a candle of any size down, and put a terracotta pot (as large as possible preferably) over it, with something non-flammable and balanced to keep the bottom an inch or two off the ground, like bricks.
The candle will heat the terracotta, which will put off heat, while the space underneath lets smoke out and oxygen in. I’ve used these all 3 times we had outages here in Maine during blizzards to keep my aquariums warm, the weather outside had been easily -20 F with high winds, and not only was I cozy, that shit kept the water 10 degrees above room temperature. If it can heat the aquariums, it’ll heat a small room.
They work so much better than you’d think, the heat they put off is insane. Obviously be careful because smoke and open flame, but they’re very easy to make and just need an eye kept on them on all times.
Don’t touch the heated pot bare-handed, it’ll burn like a motherfucker, they get VERY hot. Use thick oven mitts or layered rags to remove pot, put the candle out first if you can manage. Don’t do more than one or two in a non-ventilated or closed room, it’s still making smoke and that can make it harder to breathe.

[ID: Two bricks are laid flat, two bricks are stacked on top on their sides. A candle is in a jar inbetween and is lit. A large terracotta pot is balanced on the second, higher set of bricks so it is above the candle and off the ground. End Id]

It’s bold to assume that we would ever get near the end of the lifetime of our sun. Look at the timeframe between humans and dinosaurs. We are just puny mammals.

reddit sent me an email recommending this article, and it just rubs me the wrong ways, and makes me a little frustrated with how a huge part of the scientific community views astronomy.
First of all, why does humanity collectively need to have a “goal”? No creature on this planet evolved because it was like,, striving towards something.
Most of the time, becoming a multiplanetary species is framed as necessary for preserving the human race, lest it go extinct. And I have to ask... why should we care? Their first justification for becoming multiplanetary is because eventually the sun will die:

Which makes me laugh because, that’s 5 billion years from now???? Our species haven’t even been around for a million years, why do you think suddenly we’ll last longer than not only any other species, but life itself??? Longer than the Earth itself?? It’s unlikely that any of Earth’s current species will be around then, unchanged from how they are today.
Also, there’s always this talk about “colonizing” other planets. I don’t think it’s inherently wrong to want to live on other planets, but the term “colonization” has certain connotations as though we’re entitled to any planet we deem vacant. Which can become really complicated really quickly because we only have one example of Life. Hypothetically, there could be life on other worlds that don’t fit our definition of what Life is (and we might not fit in their definition of Life either).
ggghfhfj just,,, maybe I’m just nihilistic but the eternal existence of humans isn’t That Important
Bard: “You are as beautiful as these gems. Please take them.”
Elven King: *sweating* “Well, of course.” (Bard has no idea that in royal politics NOW he can’t not take them)
Or; Bard being an unwittingly political mastermind flattering elvenkings since the fall of smaug.

My grandmother told me when she went to school the female teacher once called her out in front of the whole class becasue she was wearing a pantyhose/thights and they looked too much like pants in the teachers opinion. She was terrified and tried to defend her clothes for at least 20 minutes. If you wore pants to school as a girl the teachers were allowed to beat you with a ruler or they slapped you in the face. That was in the late 50s early 60s.
Side note: She married young with 16. Out of love. But back then she had to ask my grandpa for a “permission slip” that she was allowed by her husband to work. WITHOUT HER HUSBANS PERMISSION SHE WAS FORBIDDEN TO WORK.
NEVER FORGET this was not even 70 years ago.

If Crowley is asleep, then who takes care of his plants?
They band together and take care of each other.
