I think some people forget that some literature and some media is meant to be deeply uncomfortable and unsettling. It's meant to make you have a very visceral reaction to it. If you genuinely can't handle these stories then you are under no obligation to consume them but acting as if they have no purpose or as if people don't have a right to tell these stories, stories that often relate to the darkest or most disturbing parts of life, then you should do some introspection.

Personally I don't have problems with Hal's tastes because I'm his contemporary (I was born in the 86) so the 80s mindsets are quite similar in between all the people who were born these years.

I strongly headcanon him being a Robotech/Macross fan because the technical part of Shoji Kawamori.

Why not Gundam in the first place? Because Gundam didn't have that amount of engineering that Macross has! Even the early toys have the three transformations and they have metal pieces (hinges). And we can't avoid remarking how famous the series was under the "Robotech" label. Also I headcanon him being a fan of Go Nagai work instead of Yoshiyuki Tomino. I'm not trying to say that he won't like Gundam, just saying that it will be in a lower position in his tier.

Definitely I could see Hal trying to make his own style of drawing in between Shoji Kawamori and Haruhiko Mikimoto style.
