haircut (zoro x reader)

zoro cuts your hair. it goes about as well as you'd expect.

Zoro cutting your hair had never been a problem before—in fact it simplified things quite a bit.  The result was never professional, but he used his sword to slice off your dead ends with precision and left you feeling rejuvenated and buzzing with glee, tickled pink that your partner took the time out of his busy training schedule to fix your hair for you.

However, today was different—today, you wanted bangs.

Brow furrowed in concentration, Zoro starts first by giving you a shorter cut than normal; tired of tangles and knots, you wanted him to cut your long, nearly waist-length hair to your shoulders for convenience, but he was not as precise as usual, and your ends currently sat around your collarbone.  Tongue sticking out of the side of his mouth, he sizes you up before making a cut in the middle of your hair with the tip of his sword to create bangs.

Tresses of hair flutter down onto the deck, and you hold in a breath, hoping that your new style will be as flattering as it is practical.  The bangs are too long—you can feel it as the hair flutters on top of your eyes, but you trust Zoro that the cut he made was even.  He looks satisfied with his work, and you beam at him and thank him, ready to stand up and go admire your new look in the bathroom mirror, until Nami walks by, catches one glimpse of you, and shrieks.

“What did you do to her, Zoro?” she exclaims, nearly dropping the drink in her hand as she stares at you, jaw agape.  A clatter in the kitchen rang out as the cook reacts to his precious Nami’s scream, while Zoro nonchalantly tells the navigator to calm down.

“Look at her!” she shouts, gesturing towards the hack job on your head, making you more nervous by the minute.  “Are you seriously gonna let her walk around like that?”

“I don’t see what you mean.  She looks fine.” he says, stubbornly crossing his arms, unable to accept any criticism of his work.  Nami grits her teeth and is about to give him a stronger, more acerbic response, but is interrupted by Sanji’s voice ringing through the air.

“Nami!  What’s wrong my beautiful, sweet, perfect—”

His words are cut off as he catches sight of you, still sitting in your chair, lopsided bangs and unevenly cut hair framing your face.

“I’ll go get my scissors.” he says, eerily calm as he starts to walk back towards the mens’ quarters.

“No need, moron, I can finish the job from here—" Zoro calls after him, reaching for his sword once more and lining it up with your shoulder.

“Don’t you dare!” Nami yells, pounding her fist on the top of his head, making him yowl in pain.

When Sanji returns, he brings with him a small bag of cosmetology tools, and prepares to remedy the mess on your head.

“Is it really that bad?” you say, voice laced with trepidation, suddenly very anxious at not being able to see a mirror.

Zoro gives you a firm no, which is overridden by a simultaneous yes from Nami and Sanji.

“Don’t worry sunshine, I’m going to fix this for you.” the cook reassures you, starting first by evening out your bangs; you sigh in relief that Zoro had left them on the longer side, making it much easier for Sanji to work his magic and cut them properly.

“The hell are you doing?  You’re gonna cut her bangs off—” Zoro growls as the cook holds a section of your bangs between his texturing scissors, about to make a cut through the combed blades.

“It’s a texturing tool, mosshead.  I’m thinning them out.” he bites back, annoyed, snipping at your locks and leaving small pieces behind on the towel draped around your front.

Sanji frowns, looking at the nearly foot long tresses covering the ground around you.  “It’s a shame, getting rid of hair as healthy and beautiful as this; I don’t want to alarm you, but it’s quite short now.” he says gingerly.

A sigh escapes your lips, annoyed that he thought Zoro was so incompetent as to accidentally chop off such a large portion of your hair without you asking for it first.  “I know,” you say, raking your fingers through your locks, smiling at the novel sense of lightness after shedding the weight of your longer hair, “I want it shoulder length, can you trim it a bit more?”

“Certainly, dear.” he says with a smile, stepping back to assess the state of your ends before jumping into trim them to the proper length and add some layers to frame your face.

“You’re taking forever.” Zoro says dryly; annoyed that his role as your hairdresser had been stripped from him, he’s standing over the cook’s shoulder, as if he was waiting for him to make a misstep.

Sanji rolls his eyes, too focused to take the bait for a larger bickering match.  “Hair as fine and delicate as this deserves proper attention.” he snaps back, unable to hide the smirk as he sees Zoro’s hand go for the hilt of his swords out of the corner of his eye.

Though the process is delayed by petty arguments between your partner and the cook, the eventual end result is stunning—more so than you could have imagined.  It feels fresh, and free, and frames your features in all the right ways; it suits you, and makes you feel more yourself than you have in a while. 

And though he was clumsy and haphazard while cutting your hair, and grumbles about the cook taking over his job, he can’t help himself from running his fingers through your locks more often than usual.

Even if he prefers cutting it himself, he’d be lying if he tried to deny that your haircut is nothing short of gorgeous.
