mary-beth was grateful to her boys—without them, she’d still be pickpocketing, if her luck wouldn’t have finally run out by now—but to say that she enjoyed doing the things that those around her deemed proper to pull her weight around camp would be the furthest thing from the truth.
she’d forever be thankful towards dutch and hosea, but if she had to hear grimshaw’s nails-on-a-chalkboard voice crowing on at her one more time—well, she’d lose it. cleaning up after men, doing their laundry, patching up their clothes—it hadn’t been what mary-beth had ever envisioned for herself.
maybe, if she worked quickly enough, she could get this done, sneak off, and stick her nose in a good book. maybe if she hid well enough, no one would be able to find her for a few good hours.
before she could put the plan in motion, arthur had caught her attention, making her jump a little, and successfully ripping her out of her thoughts.
“ oh ! arthur— ” she said, trying to brush the surprise off and offering him a smile. “ well, i wouldn’t say no to that. though i’m afraid i’m not too great in the way of company. still—if you have any interestin’ stories to tell, i’m certainly all ears. ”
things could be so dull around camp that mary-beth swore sometimes she’d rather be dead.

she’s frustrated. beyond it, really, but also tired. very, very tired.
and with a fussy toddler that somehow managed to catch a cold and had been extra clingy ever since, the frustration and tiredness had no end in sight. and it didn’t help that john was as distant as ever. there was only so much she could do.
arthur had clocked her and she could feel the embarrassment spread throughout her body. the desperation had a stronger hold on her, however, and it was the only reason why, upon being called out for watching him for too long, she found herself saying, “ arthur, i—i really hate to ask, but—do ya think you could maybe find some medicine for jack ? ”
then, quickly, before he could attempt to protest, she added, “ i’m sorry, i really am, but—well, you know the boy’s father’s useless. i couldn’t even convince him to jump in the river if he was on fire. ”
a brief pause followed before she meekly, in one final ditch effort, asked, “ please…? ”

inspiration : just like- the media my muses are from. if i need inspo i'll do a re-watch or watch clips on youtube, or re-read the book, etc. your basic stuff. story behind url : i just wanted to be cute and match urls with my bffs lmao fun fact about me : according to friends and family, i have a perfect memory for dates and i have a great eye for detail. i can recall very detailed memories that my other family had forgotten about. i've been told that i should've gone to school for genetics bc i observe them so closely (tho i blame my attention to genetics on the fact that people ask me if i'm adopted when i'm with my mom and siblings bc i look too native and was desperate as a child to see if i had any traits in common with them lmao) my friends also tell me that i'm the 'fc master' bc of said attention to genetics and detail but lol.
