i don't wanna be so shy... every time that I'm alone, I wonder why... hope that you will wait for me...
life with john has been anything but easy, and abigail knows that in another life, they most likely wouldn’t be together. in all honesty, despite her school-girl crush on him, she knows that, realistically, had she never fallen pregnant with his child, nothing would’ve come of them. john wouldn’t have wanted to settle down with her, anyway, she’s sure. still, as much as she would never say it to his face, abigail knows that if jack had to be the child of anyone at the camp, she’s glad his father is john. she’d never had any doubts about it—even if john had, and had subsequently deserted them for a year as a result. it’s taken them both a long while to accept their situation—more so john than herself—but she supposes, when it comes down to it, she loves that stupid, foolish man.
abigail loves him more than he even really deserves, but it’s an unwavering sort of love. she couldn’t unlove him if she tried. she’s stuck with him, and he, her. together for the long haul and all they can really do is try to make the most of it.
“ you’ll see, john, ” she tells him one day, voice full of conviction. “ you’ll see that you’re the only one for me. ”

growing up, abigail didn’t have much hope that her life would be all that great, or that she’d ever have a purpose. being an orphan hadn’t left her with very many options, and while she’d done what she could, she never would’ve dreamt that she would have a plot of land, a roof over her head, and a family to call her own. she never thought that she’d be so lucky.
she had never been set up for success, and she supposed that’s what infuriated her about her son’s outlook on life. admittedly, she would always feel a sense of GUILT for how he’d grown up and the horrors that he’d seen in his short life, but she TRIED. abigail tried to be a good mother, to instill good morals and behaviors and outlooks on life in her son, and she knew that he was a broody teenager, but she was determined for him to have a FAR better life than she ever did.
“ now you listen to me jack, ” she told him, voice taking on it’s typical, motherly sternness. “ maybe i don’t know better, but i do know best, and i won’t hear none of this doom and gloom nonsense ! you’re gonna make somethin’ of yourself, ya hear me ? ”
“Do you want to come to dinner?” / followed by joke about abigail's cooking from john, for sadie (epilogue feels innit <3)
“ me ? ” abigail asked, pitched heightened in surprise at the question, while she simultaneously swatted at john for his very much UNWANTED remark. she didn’t think she’d ever been asked out to dinner before—and john was anything but the romantic type, typically only giving into her demands after she’d badgered him to death. and she didn’t like having to be that way, but the man never seemed to want to do things until she lit a fire under his ass and gave him no other options—he was too stubborn for his own good. but most of all, he was unromantic and never wined and dined her—not that she thought that’s what sadie was planning on doing, of course. it did her no favors to be presumptuous.
besides, it would be nice to have a night where her boys could fend for themselves. maybe a girls’ night was just what she needed. and maybe her night away would make john realize just how blessed he was to have a wife who cooked him anything at all !
“ well, ” abigial said, finally, bright smile on her lips, “ if you don’t think it’d be too much trouble… why, yes, i would love to join you for dinner, sadie, thank you. ”

abigail had always been the type to cry when she got angry over something, and eventually that anger would subside into sadness. since joining the gang, she’d had her ups and downs but nothing compared to the sudden disappearance of her child. she’d always known that the group had been none too thrilled to discover she’d fallen pregnant—and she’d heard all the scoffs and remarks about who jack’s father had been, having to bite her tongue more often than not as so not to give anyone the satisfaction of getting under her skin. she knew john refused to take accountability for his part in things, but she knew that jack was his—and he had better do all that he could to get their son back or so help him, jesus—
abigail couldn’t stop from flinching as she felt a soft hand grab her shoulder and prompt her to turn around. lifting her head from her hands, she turned to find sadie looking at her with sympathetic eyes and that was all it took for another choked sob to roll out of her as she easily collapsed into sadie’s arms.
it had been the first time in a long time that abigail had been shown some sort of kindness from someone in the camp and she wouldn’t forget it.

❛ you look like you got somethin' to say . ❜ - for abigail !
she’s frustrated. beyond it, really, but also tired. very, very tired.
and with a fussy toddler that somehow managed to catch a cold and had been extra clingy ever since, the frustration and tiredness had no end in sight. and it didn’t help that john was as distant as ever. there was only so much she could do.
arthur had clocked her and she could feel the embarrassment spread throughout her body. the desperation had a stronger hold on her, however, and it was the only reason why, upon being called out for watching him for too long, she found herself saying, “ arthur, i—i really hate to ask, but—do ya think you could maybe find some medicine for jack ? ”
then, quickly, before he could attempt to protest, she added, “ i’m sorry, i really am, but—well, you know the boy’s father’s useless. i couldn’t even convince him to jump in the river if he was on fire. ”
a brief pause followed before she meekly, in one final ditch effort, asked, “ please…? ”
❛ you know you can always talk to me. ❜ / for abigail! <3
abigail knows she can; of course she can. sadie is her friend; someone she bonded with rather quickly after she’d joined the group, despite the circumstances. it wasn’t that abigail didn’t get along with the other girls, too, but three of them seemed to stick together, molly didn’t seem to much interact with anyone besides dutch, and grimshaw always had something nasty to say, so she tended to avoid her if she could help it. but sadie was different. sadie didn’t take shit from anyone; she spoke her mind, and abigail could appreciate that.
maybe sadie could give her some advice—as much as abigail assumed the topic of ‘marriage’ still might be a bit of a sore subject.
“ can i ask you somethin’ ? ” she asked, finally, and when sadie didn’t say ‘no’, she continued. “ i’ve been around lotsa men, none too bright at that, but none quite like…john. ”
john always confused her. he’d been so kind to her at one point, but then he’d left and when he came back, he preferred to pretend like he didn’t like her at all and that they didn’t have a son together.
“ my point bein’, ” abigail continued, “ that i don’t know what to do with him. he don’t want nothin’ to do with me or the boy, but i feel like i’m stuck here, anyway. i feel like him bein’ made to marry me just made him resent us more, but i ain’t sure what other choices i have. ”
after a brief pause, abigail’s gaze moved to meet sadie’s and she asked, “ what would you do in my position ? ”
the guilt and grief gnawed at her insides. things had been tough, and it had even been nearly enough to do her in. abigail had always considered herself a strong woman, but she wasn’t sure how much more strength she had left to give. she tried to put on a brave face for jack—her pride and joy that she wanted so much better for in life—but it was hard. without john…she hated to even think about the reality they faced now. she even missed uncle. she hated that there was nothing she could do now but try to make the best out of an impossible situation; their lives were supposed to be so much different than this.
“ now you listen to me, jack marston… ” her tone tried to take on its usual motherly sternness, but it tapered off at the end, and she could feel the knot of emotion caught in the center of her chest. “ you can’t do it all on your own. i’m your mother; i’m supposed to be the one takin’ care of you. ”
if her voice cracked a little, she refused to acknowledge it, instead, clearing her throat and adding, “ you deserve a better life than this. ”
"Ma..." Jack couldn't help but look down at the ground. How was he supposed to not bear all that weight? With John and Uncle gone, he had to step up and provide for what's left of his family. "Ya know ya can't work that hard, Ma. Jus' let me worry about the ranch and farm. You jus' take it easy, alright?"
He couldn't bring back John, or Uncle, or Arthur. But he could at least lightened the load on her shoulders.

she shouldn’t say anything. she really shouldn’t, but abigail has never been one to care much about rocking the proverbial boat—least of all when it has something to do with her child.
“ y’know the boy don’t think you like ‘em very much. ” the words are out before she can think twice, but she doesn’t regret bringing the topic up. “ if he likes readin’ ain’t nothin’ wrong with that. lotsa people would kill to know how. ”
