“dammit!” you whisper-yelled, rummaging through your trunk as you scrambled to get dressed. “where the hell is my wand?!” it was nearly time for class; you were supposed to attend breakfast 30 minutes prior but you’d stayed up particularly late finishing an essay that was due.

you nearly gave up all hope when you looked up and saw your wand exactly where you left it, sat neatly on your bedside table. you snatched it and literally ran out of the dorms and to the potions classroom.

breathing a sigh of relief, you fixed your tie as you joined the sea of students heading into the room. you were lucky that your common room was in the dungeons, or you would’ve been late. not that it really mattered, snape would’ve let you off anyways.

you took your normal seat next to your best friend theodore nott, who’d laughed at your disheveled and out of breath state. “you got lucky.” he whispered, as snape made his room, and you gently slapped theo’s shoulder, light laughter coming from you both as you settled into your seats.

“due to some.. reckless and unacceptable behavior..” he glared at some gryffindors. “...i will be reassigning partners.” snape drawled, causing the room to groan.

“silence! move to your new seats once i announce your partners. do not bother to complain, i will not be making alternative arrangements.” you and theo frowned as names were called out, “potter and longbottom.” “parkinson and nott.” “malfoy and l/n.”

you paused, hoping it wasn’t true. you looked at theo, and due to the apologetic look on his face, you knew you’d heard right.

draco malfoy was your new potions partner. you glanced over to see him packing up his bag to move next to you. he didn’t look at all pleased, and you were sure you looked the same.

to put it simply, you and draco didn’t get along. it all began in your first year, when the two of you were neck and neck for top student in slytherin. ever since, the two of you had formed a rivalry of sorts and a growing hatred for the other. you couldn’t spend five minutes next to each other without an insult being thrown.

this was going to be interesting.

draco sat down, saying nothing and keeping his eyes forward. you sighed quietly and did the same. snape continued on with his lesson, eventually assigning the task and letting you get to work. he turned to you, “let’s just get this done, yeah?” nodding silently, you both claimed certain tasks and got to work.

it wasn’t long before you finished the potion, bottling it up and handing it into snape. “you see students, this is what it looks like when you actually follow what is said and make it right.” snape announced, causing some eyerolls amongst the room. “10 points to slytherin. you two are dismissed.”

you smirked, clearly enjoying the praise and gathered your things. with a quick wave to theo, you left the room, draco following behind you. silence filled the hall as you both made your way back to the common room.

you had to admit, you were surprised the two of you worked so well together considering your history. “you know, malfoy..” you both stopped at the sound of your voice, and he looked at you with a raised eyebrow. “you don’t make a half bad partner.” you said lightly, taking him by surprise, before sending him a smirk. “for a moment there, i’d almost say you were better than me. almost.” he scoffed, rolling his eyes.

“oh please l/n, we both know who’s the better potion-maker here.” he shot back, his infamous smirk plastered on his face.

you looked at him up and down, “glad we agree then. i’m much better than you are.” you shot him a wink, quickly muttering the password to the portrait and stepping inside the room.

you were both aware he was much more advanced in potions, but you had dug yourself in now and you had much too much pride to give up now. “is that so? if i’m not mistaken, last week you nearly added rat spleens to your swelling solution rather than bat spleens!”

you turned to face him as you shot back, “in my defense, my book was smudged and-” but before you could finish your sentence, your body collided with his and you would’ve been knocked over completely had he not reached out and caught you.

the two of you stood in shock for a moment as you regained your balance, looking up at him and opening your mouth to say something, but you closed it again as no words came to mind. you two made eye contact and froze, before you both began leaning in slowly. to your luck, just before your lips touched, the door to the common room began opening and the two of you jumped apart.

the room quickly flooded with students, and without even looking at you, draco grabbed his books and joined his friends, acting as if nothing happened. you shook your head as you saw terry approaching you.

“how was potions with malfoy?” he asked, an expression of humor on his face. “it was fine. i managed.” you said, laughing along with him.

however, you weren’t managing well. you couldn’t stop thinking about your ‘moment’ for the rest of the day. laying in your bed that night, he was the only thing on your mind.

‘was he really going to kiss me?’ ‘was i really going to kiss him??’ ‘do i fancy draco malfoy?’ your thoughts and heart were racing. earlier that morning, you would’ve laughed at the idea of you and draco having a tolerable relationship. you’d hated the bloke. now, you weren’t sure that would be so bad. how could one action change your entire view on someone?

as you closed your eyes and drifted into a deep sleep, the only thing you were sure of was that you definitely didn’t hate draco malfoy.

omg thank you!! honestly i tried really hard to make it look aesthetic because i feel like hufflepuff is kinda revolved around aesthetics?? idk. as for my masterlist i’ve had previous blogs in other fandoms and i honestly just copy pasted it from my old one and rearranged it to fit harry potter. doing it on a computer helps also :)

(tip: anything italicized looks very aesthetic on its own! that’s my secret shh)

pairing: james potter x twin!reader

warnings: angst!!!!

a/n: i lost inspiration halfway through, and forced the rest out. this is a bit different to my normal writing style, and i dont know if i like it. i really just wanted to post something after going mia for a few days.

request: Could you please do a James Potter imagine where he had a twin sister who he was really close to and she was heart broken when he died. And they reunite in the afterlife after she risks her life for Harry when Draco brings the death eaters to the school or something? Please and thanks xxx

-

you sat on your couch, silent tears rolling down your face as your thoughts raced through your head at an ungodly speed. you tried listening, you really did, but everyone’s frantic chatter was drowned out by the sinking feeling in your stomach.

abruptly, you stood up, catching the eye of everyone as you walked casually out of the room, and you made a faint note about how the distant buzz of conversation was suddenly missing as you exited. you didn’t blame them for staring, nor in that moment, did you care.

he was dead. your other half, your twin was dead. the boy who used to pick on your height, chase you around the backyard, the one who helped you up when you fell.

he was dead.

she was too.

your best friend from all those years in school, the one who had a growing hatred for your brother’s annoying, flirty comments he seemed to throw her way daily. she was dead.

james and lily, the two most important people in your life, were dead.

you didn’t know what to do. you cried for them. for james, your twin brother. for lily, your best friend. for their love. for your loss. the person you cried the most for however, was your nephew, harry.

you wanted to take him in, you did. it pained you to do so, but you asked lily’s sister to take him in.

it took some convincing, but after pleading to her about how you wanted him away from the magic community, she agreed. he looked exactly like james, and you knew with time he’d only grow to look more like your missing half.

selfishly, you gave him away to protect yourself. and you ran as far as you could, out of sight, and out of harry’s life.

it was just before the start of harry’s third year when you received a message from remus. over the years of your absence, you’d vaguely kept in contact, you updating him moderately on your locations, only meeting a select few times for a short butterbeer and chat. you never stayed in the same place for too long, for fear of being caught.

ever since you’d lost james and lily, you’d never been the same. always on edge, not trust anyone. except remus.

he was always your favorite of james’ friends, his soft spot for you forming the day you met. he always cared for you like another brother, who brought a different type of comfort than what you had with james.

so when you read the letter he’d sent, you were in complete shock.

dearest y/n,

it is with mixed emotions i write you this letter. i hope you receive it quickly, as the term will begin in the next few weeks. as you know, my condition has prevented me of finding work within the magical community, for reasons i feel i don’t need to explain. not to you, anyways.

professor dumbledore (i suppose it's only appropriate for me to address him as so again) has contacted me, and has offered me a position at hogwarts. i’m beginning as the new defensive against the dark arts teacher at the school this term.

i know what you’re probably thinking reading this; how safe can it be for a school with a werewolf as a professor? trust me, i feel the same way, though dumbledore has once again assured me he will put the same precautions we took as children into my case and ensure the environment is safe for me.

i’m sure you’ve already figured it out at this point, but harry will be attending the school as well and yes, i will be teaching him. i will not mention you if you wish not to, but as much as i’ve been pushing you to be apart of his life y/n, now’s your chance.

i can bring you up, or i can pretend you don’t exist. harry has suffered long enough, he thinks he’s alone in this world and you can change that. sure, he’ll be upset but he won’t hate you.

i won’t pressure you into anything, but i want you to consider it. i just hope through all of this, no matter what you may choose to do, you’ll be happy for me. this opportunity is asking a lot of the school and it is very special to me.

not only for a job, but to finally get to meet harry in person. i’ve been told he’s much like james.. nearly identical. i suppose i’ll see for myself soon enough. write back soon.

wishing you well,

remus.

you inhaled sharply as you folded the letter, placing it down on the counter and leaning back against the cheap armchair sat awkwardly in the corner of your rented motel room. you sighed, pausing before pulling out the photograph you’d taken of yourself, james, and lily in your younger years.

the picture transitioned from the three of you posing, to james shoving you for a stupid joke you’d made, and the three of you laughing happily.

a tear slipped from your eye as you pondered remus’ letter. harry was alone. it made you wonder about petunia, and quickly you realized you really never had checked up on him.

you felt sick with guilt, and in an instant, you’d pulled out your quill and ink and wrote back a simple reply, sending it off with your owl.

hogsmeade first weekend of the school year? need to talk in person.

a few owls and details sorted later, you found yourself sitting in your old booth, anxiously drumming your fingers as memories seemingly swarmed around you.

remus walked in shortly after, and you gave him a tight hug before suggesting he sit. however, he hesitated, nervously shifting on his feet and chewing on his lip; a nervous tick of his, you recalled.

“remus?” you asked, timidly. he offered a nervous smile, before wordlessly walking to the door, hurt washing over you for a moment. he opened the door a crack, beckoning someone to follow him, your eyes widening when you saw the boy walk into the building.

you froze, watching him listen to remus before looking at you, a confused expression on his face.

he sat down across from you, remus waving you goodbye (much to your protest) and leaving you alone with harry.

“uh.. hello. remus said you were another friend of my parents.” harry said, clearly not quite sure why he was here. you let out a shaky breath, shaking his hand.

“uh, something like that, i suppose.” you smiled, “i’m y/n.” it took a couple of odd topics, but after an hour or so, you were comfortably talking. he asked a lot of questions about his parents and you told many stories, and before you knew it he had to leave. “tell remus i said thank you, will you harry?” you asked, brushing yourself off.

“sure thing, y/n. see you around?” he asked, hopeful.

you smiled, “i think you will.”

you and harry met once or twice a month, becoming an annual occurrence. you enjoyed his company, and remus was correct; he was exactly like james. of course, there was one slight issue, and that was that you never told him that you were his aunt.

regrettably so, as now you were so far into a relationship, and you didn’t know how to tell him.

the longer time passed however, and the more the guilt ate at you. every time you saw him, you saw james; and lying to james was one thing you were never able to do.

the next time you saw harry was during one of the last hogsmeade trips of the school year. he’d told you about his classes, and at the end of your session, you nearly said your goodbyes when you stopped him. you nearly backed out, but you owed him this at least.

“harry, there’s something i need to tell you. i should’ve told you sooner but i didn’t know how. i’m sorry for waiting so long.” you told him, tears welling in your eyes.

if he was just like james (which by now, you were certain he was), this was the last time you would see him willingly. harry looked confused, but silently urged you to continue. “i’m not.. i was never james’ friend. i was..” you sighed, letting the tears flow. “i’m his sister. his twin sister.. i’m your aunt.”

those were the last words you spoke to harry. you hadn’t seen him since. the memory of the horror mixed with confusion on his face when you’d told him was forever engraved in your brain, and that was nearly 4 years ago. you still talked to remus and rejoined the order when it came time, but you went back to staying away from the country and went back to travelling.

you went to america for awhile; in your eyes, the farther you were, the less strain it put on harry.

there were days you’d wished you could go back, save harry from that monstrous petunia sooner. you felt like james, wherever he may be, was disappointed in you. you didn’t blame him; you were too.

you couldn’t believe you’d been so selfish, and for it, harry suffered through things a child should never have to worry about. the past was the past however.

the war was coming, and you needed to do your part to help harry win.

voldemort needed to pay for what he did to lily and james all those years ago, and you couldn’t lose harry too. not after everything. you vowed to yourself that no matter what happened, keeping him safe was all that mattered.

curses, hexes and spells were being fired left right and centre as the battle raged on. you weren’t sure how long you’d been fighting, but it had been so long that you were getting tired.

you wouldn’t give up, but you decided to switch to defensive charms rather than offensive spells for the time being, helping the students you saw in danger.

you’d lost sight of harry after his ‘death’ and the recommencement of the war, so now you were scrambling around the castle, helping as you went, but still looking for a certain raven-haired boy.

you saw him on the top floor, face to face with a boy around his age with platinum blonde hair, you’d assumed from the way he was positioned and the way he looked, this was lucius’ son.

harry and the malfoy boy were in the middle of an avid conversation when you saw a figure approaching harry from behind, and you saw the opposing boy’s face change to one of fear as a curse left the deatheater’s lips.

you quickly sprung yourself in front of harry, and as he turned around and watched your body fly in front of his, you heard a faint scream and a curse being fired in the direction of the original spell before you closed your eyes, allowing death to take you with ease.

you’d done what you had to save harry, and you were content with dying in order to protect him.

your eyes fluttered open, frowning in confusion as two figures loomed over you, smiling. you squinted as you faintly made out the long, beautifully flowing fiery red hair of the first figure and the messy mop of raven curls of the second figure. you blinked, not believing what was in front of you.

“lily? james?” you whispered, the two each offering you an arm, helping you to your feet. you stared at them for a moment, before embracing them in a group hug. “i’ve missed you so much.” you sputtered, in shock.

“we missed you too, y/n” lily smiled, though it was bittersweet.

it was at her facial expression that a sinking feeling rose inside of you. “how- how is this possible?” you were blanking, completely oblvious to the situation.

“y/n, you saved him. you died saving him.” james said, quietly. you processed this, suddenly remembering jumping in front of the curse.

“oh.” you muttered, before a sad smile came across your lips. lily sensed the desire to speak to your twin, so with a last hug, she left the two of you to each other’s company. you quickly embraced james in a tight hug, him returning the favour.

“i’m so sorry james.” you were crying now, and he shushed you, pulling you at arm’s length.

“listen to me y/n potter. you have nothing to apologize for. you and i both know if it had been reversed, you would’ve done the same. it’s not my fault he’s exactly like me-” he started, having you slap him lightly, sparking a chuckle.

“i’m not angry. i promise. i could never be disappointed in you, y/n. no matter how hard you try.” a boyish grin overtook his features as you smiled back, gulping.

“i’ve missed you so much james.” you whispered.

“i missed you too.” leaning your head on his shoulder, he gently guided you two to where lily was waiting, ready to start your afterlife; one with both lily and james in it. “what about harry?” you stopped, looking at his parents, who only smiled at each other gently.

“we’ll watch over him still. don’t worry, he’s protected.”

happier [j.p]

a/n: italicized text = flashback / really happy with this one!

request: Can you do a James Potter imagine where he was best friends with a girl for his whole life and Lily is jealous of their relationship so he breaks off their friendship, and the marauders are all super mad. And then he sees her with other people and regrets everything please? I love the imagines you’ve done so far x (requested by anon)

-

you watched him with her, sitting across from each other at the gryffindor table, laughing together. they looked happy. he looked happy. that’s all that ever mattered to you. if his happiness meant you were no longer a part of his life, you decided you could live with that.

you were only 2 years old when you met james potter for the first time. you lived in a house next to the potters, (though it was remarkably smaller, and looked quite silly next to the large manor), and your parents had decided it was time to meet your neighbors.

your parents having tea with his turned from a one-time meeting to a daily occurence, meaning you and james would spend a lot of time together. at such a young age, you were simply happy to have someone to play with, little did you know.

you were 6 years old when you made your promise to each other. the one you were sure would never break; one that would bound your friendship for life.

“james, will we always be best friends?” you asked, your big eyes sparkling with curiosity.

“of course, y/n. best friends forever.” he replied, smiling down at your smaller figure.

“pinky promise?” you stuck out your pinky; a tradition you’d learned from your muggle-born mother. this was something you’d taught james long ago, and without hesitation he’d liked his finger with yours, sealing the words you held dearly to your heart for years to come.

perhaps you were naive for thinking he’d keep those words.

you were 11 years old when you’d first stepped foot on the hogwarts train. you remember being incredibly nervous that entire morning, and james had held your hand and practically dragged you onto the train.

the two of you had found a compartment with 3 other students in your year; sirius black, severus snape, and lily evans. you didn’t recall much of what was said in that carriage, though you would never forget lily defending severus against sirius and james, or the look james gave her when she’d first snapped back at his snarky remark.

those things stuck with you, probably because they never changed; james and sirius formed an ongoing rivalry with severus, and james’ crush on lily only grew with time.

you were 15 years old when things started to change. james had always been someone who loved attention, not that it was his fault; being an only child, he was used to having a lot of it. so when he’d started showing off to lily in your first year, you weren’t surprised nor phased, because no matter what he’d always make time for you.

however, it had started to become a somewhat recurrent theme as to where he’d miss a study date, claiming he’d forgotten or where he’d be too busy to make plans.

you knew he truly was busy; he’d been extra passionate about quidditch recently, and he felt pressured to keep up his grades, so you never thought too much of it, because at the end of the day, you still hung out regularly; you had your own share of things to do, and you were content.

you were 17 years old when james had finally won lily over. in your opinion, after so long it was a little bit suspicious that suddenly she’d taken interest, but you saw how happy she made him so you kept it to yourself. you and lily got along fine as well; never having really spoken to the girl, aside having the odd casual conversation here and there. she seemed nice, from the few chats the two of you shared.

you were 17 years old when you realized that wasn’t the case.

it was about a week into their relationship when james stopped ‘forgetting’ your study dates (rather blatantly cancelling them instead) more frequently. you tried not to take it too personally; he’d finally got the attention of the girl he’d been pining after since the first year, and you figured it was best to give the two some space for the time being to settle into their relationship.

you would wait for him to come to you when he was ready.

however, time went on and james never came back; if anything, you’d found him distancing himself more and more. they were little things; certain things only his best friend would notice.

the way he nervously tugged on the edge of his robe when you’d talked, short responses during your conversations, little nervous glances when the two of you were alone together.

james had been acting very strange, and you didn’t know if this was something you should be worried about, or if it was simply a phase.

the boys had noticed his behavior as well. sirius and remus watched james practically throw you aside without a moment’s thought, simply because his new girlfriend asked him to.

they were fully aware of what the two of you had gone through together and to see him give it up for a girl who for years wouldn’t give him the time of day, had them furious. they’d tried to confront him about it, but he’d only shrugged them off, “you wouldn’t understand. you’ve never been in love.”

after a month, you barely spoke to james at all. you were hurt beyond belief, but there was no reason to dwell on the past (or so you’d been telling yourself). you’d made better friends with remus, sirius and even somewhat peter, though he didn’t talk much.

you supposed the three pitied you, and since james spent all his time with lily, they had nothing better to do. they’d told you on multiple occasions this wasn’t the case, but you didn’t fully believe them. you appreciated their company though.

slowly however, you drifted away from the four notorious gryffindors altogether. you’d found a new group; your potions partner and newfound friend, mary, had introduced you to her group and they welcome you with open arms.

mary was a ravenclaw, and it was a nice change from all the idiocy you previously surrounded yourself with. you could have intellectual conversations with your new friends and it was refreshing; you found yourself barely thinking about james at all anymore.

james was sitting across from lily at breakfast, smiling and laughing at a joke she’d made. “i’m going to head to charms early, i want to check over something for the essay before class.” she told him, standing up.

“should i come with you?” he asked, fully prepared to leave his half-full plate behind.

“it’s alright james, i’ll see you in class.” with a quick wave, lily sauntered off, leaving james to his own thoughts. he shrugged, continuing with his meal.

he glanced around, suddenly feeling bored and looked for his friends. he’d caught sight of sirius’ wild curls, and grabbed his plate, moving to sit with his friends, who all gave mixed expressions as he sat down.

“how's it going lads?” james asked, digging right back into his food as if he hadn’t sat uninvited.

he glanced around, furrowing his brows. “where’s y/n?”

sirius looked furious, remus blinked and peter dropped his fork, causing confusion and slight worry to rise in james. “why do you care where they are?” sirius snapped, taking him aback.

“what do you mean?”

the other marauders looked at james as if he’d grown another head.

“mate, you haven’t even looked at y/n in weeks.” remus said, disappointment laced obviously in his tone.

“well, lily said i spend too much time with them-”

“prongs, honestly. can’t you see what she’s doing? she’s controlling you! you left y/n without hesitation, just because lily asked? have you forgotten what they’ve done for you? all the years you spent together?” sirius spoke with a dangerously low tone, trying not to cause a scene.

james felt as though he’d been slapped in the face. “where are they?” he asked again, his voice failing him as he spoke.

sirius stood up, huffing and walking off, remus shaking his head and following behind. peter scrambled up, pausing and pointing james quickly in the direction of the ravenclaw table before scurrying off and following the other two out.

he scanned the table, clearly confused before he saw your face. you were listening intently to a story the person across from you was telling; james couldn’t see who it was because their back was to him, but the blue-clad robe had him confused. when did you make friends with a ravenclaw?

before he knew it, you burst out laughing at something your friend had said and his chest tightened. he watched your body shake with the giggles that escaped your lips, his heart growing heavy every passing moment.

sirius’ words replayed in his head. “you left y/n without hesitation, just because lily asked? have you forgotten what they’ve done for you? all the years you spent together?”.

he cared deeply about you; he never stopped caring. he wanted so bad to go up to you and apologize, but he knew what he’d done was unforgivable. he’d never even considered how you would feel when he’d left you.

he’d finally got the girl of his dreams, and yet it cost him his best friend; the only person who’d stayed with him through everything.

and the thing that was killing him the most?

was that you completely, and undeniably, looked happier.

“please be careful.” you pleaded to him, a sinking feeling weighing down on you.

“i will. i always am.” he said, his boyish smile easing you slightly.

“i love you ced. i’ll kill you if you get yourself hurt.” you said jokingly, though the uneasy smile on your face told you true feelings.

he sighed, pulling you into a hug. “y/n, i promise. i’ll be okay. this is what i’ve been training for; it’s just an enchanted maze. how dangerous could it be?”

“no!” you cried, seeing his body hit the ground. “cedric!” you wailed, your legs giving out under you and falling to your knees. he couldn’t be gone. he promised. he promised he’d be okay.

you distantly heard your father scream and run towards the middle of the field, and you somehow found it in you to follow him. you wanted so desperately to stop yourself, the image of his lifeless body forever engraved in your brain.

you kept running with shaking legs, tears blurring your vision as you fell into your father’s chest soaking his coat with tears.

your eyes snapped open, your face dripping with sweat as you jerked into a sitting position. you panicked, glancing all around the tent and finding a small relief when you determined where you were. though it didn’t last long, because you remembered why you were here in the first place.

you slipped out of bed, careful not to wake the others as you stepped out of the tent, stretching as you did so. you sat down on a rock, allowing the cool air to hit your skin and relax you slightly. it was just another nightmare. a recurring nightmare of a real event, but still, just a nightmare.

it was hard moving on. your brother meant everything to you; seeing him lying dead in front of you was the most heart-wrenching thing you’d ever felt, and were sure you’d ever feel in your entire life.

you remembered it so vividly, the nightmares frequently reminding you of that night, though in reality it had happened nearly three years ago. everyone told you to give it time, ‘it’ll get easier’ they said. unfortunately for you, time did nothing but make you miss him more with every passing day.

you snapped out of your trance when you heard crunching footsteps. you looked in the direction of the source, one hand immediately flying to your wand in your pocket, when you saw it was only harry, and someone following him. you squinted, and gasped once you saw who it was.

“ron?” you whispered, taken aback. he’d left in a fit, and you certainly didn’t expect to see him back here. you knew hermione wouldn’t take it well either. the two approached you, both dripping wet.

“where the hell have you been?” you asked ron, defensively. hermione was your best friend, and currently she was in the tent, away from the three of you.

“it’s a long story.” he answered, and you angrily shook your head when something caught your eye.

“what’s that, then?” he held up the sword of gryffindor, you gasping when you saw it. “how did-” you started, but you were interrupted before you got a chance to ask.

“what is going on out here?” hermione asked, storming out of the tent and freezing when she saw ron. “you-” she was speechless, and an awkward silence fell upon the four of you.

“ron, give me that.” you stormed over, snatching the wand. “harry, do you have the locket?” he nodded, and you grabbed his hand and pulled him into the forest. “we’ll be back. neither of you better leave.” you said sternly, and you and harry made your way deep into the woods.

“put it down.” you demanded, and harry gave you a look. “harry, i mean it.” he sighed as he did so, coming towards you.

“you don’t have to do this.” he told you, gently taking your free hand in his and caressing your cheek with the other. you leaned into his touch, huffing slightly.

“i do.” you whispered. “i have to, for him.” harry tensed at the mention of your brother, but he knew he couldn’t stop you from doing this. if you felt this was what’s right and this would bring you a sort of closure, he couldn’t bring himself to take that away from you.

you and harry hadn’t been close before the incident, in fact you’d never really spoken. he was the most popular boy in your year, and you’d hardly had any classes together. once he became a triwizard champion, you’d grown to dislike the boy (though you did defend harry to your brother when the pins spread around).

when cedric died however, you both went through an incredibly traumatizing experience. you, of course, in losing your brother, and harry in having watched him die. he’d found you crying one day in myrtle’s bathroom (he’d been crying too) and ever since you two had bonded and started going to each other for help with coping.

one day he’d kissed you, and from then on, a relationship was formed.

harry wasn’t stupid, and he wasn’t oblivious either. he knew about the nightmares and the constant reminder of him. all he could do was hold you and make it go away.

knowing this locket would likely spring out something relative to cedric, he was terrified to allow you to do this, but he also didn’t have it in his heart to stop you. you needed this. you needed closure, and you certainly weren’t going to get it any other way. your brother had died such a brutal death, you never truly got to say goodbye.

harry knew partially the only reason (besides himself) you’d come to find horcruxes was to get your own revenge on voldemort. this locket was that revenge, and with hesitation, he stepped away from your frame and distanced himself from the locket.

“when i speak, the locket will open. don’t listen to anything it may say; none of it is true. you can do this.” he spoke with such confidence, you nearly believed he felt that way. deep down however, you knew harry, and he was terrified. you were too.

you nodded, taking a deep breath and raising the sword, preparing for the worst. harry sent you a smile, gulping nervously as he began speaking silkily in parseltongue. you weren’t sure what you were expecting to jump out of the locket, but it wasn’t what had formed in the darkness arising from the locket.

“y/n..” he snarled, seemingly stepping closer to you. “look at you. pathetic. what have you done here? have you helped at all?” you couldn’t think straight anymore, looking wide-eyed at the figure who so resembled your brother, frozen in shock.

“you’ve done nothing to help them. you’ve done nothing to avenge me. you can’t even break a tiny little necklace. you’re weak.” you raised the sword, your fear being overtaken by shame and anger. “i’m disappointed in you.”

with those last haunting words, you swung the sword as hard as you could, smashing the locket and destroying the horcrux within. you dropped the sword, dropping to your knees again, like all those years ago.

harry raced over, wrapping his arms around your frame and holding you tight. “you did it, love. you destroyed a horcrux.” he beamed, and you couldn’t help but smile. you did destroy a horcrux. you assisted in killing voldemort.

you kissed harry, him reciprocating quickly, before grabbing the sword and locket. the two of you made your way back to ron and hermione, his arm wrapped tightly around your shoulder. you were beaming; all you’d ever wanted after cedric’s death was to make him proud and avenge his death, and you finally felt like you’d done that.

you made your way back to see ron and hermione arguing, rolling your eyes. “can you two stop yelling at each other for two minutes so we can have a nice reunion?” you said sarcastically, smiling at them both. they blushed, and against hermione’s better judgement, you had a sort of group hug.

“that’s one less horcrux to deal with.” harry sighed, hermione and ron frowning.

“don’t we still need to destroy it, mate? ron asked, and harry smiled proudly at you.

“have i forgotten to mention y/n destroyed it already?”

the two looked at you in a mix of confusion and pride, eventually settling in pride. “when the bloody hell did you do that?” ron asked, laughing lightly.

“whilst you two were too busy arguing, obviously” you sassed, the four of you bursting into laughter. you all cast some final protection spells and headed inside the tent, harry’s arm never moving from you. he couldn’t even imagine the pain you’d gone through destroying that locket and he was so proud of you.

you spent the rest of the evening celebrating that you now had one less horcrux to find and destroy, the weight of the upcoming war was relieved for one night as the four of you allowed yourselves one night to simply forget about the issues at hand.

and for once since that day, you could finally say you fell asleep with a smile on your face, thinking about how proud cedric would’ve been of you. strangely, you felt more connected with him than you had since it had happened, and a sense of calm wash over you as you drifted off to sleep.

you glared harshly at the two adults who had made your life a living hell. amycus and alecto carrow, two new professors at hogwarts, who had claimed responsibility for disciplining students. you hadn’t bothered to keep track of how many times you’d been tortured by the two, but at this point, it didn’t really matter.

currently, you were missing an emergency meeting called by the headmaster (though you refused to address him as such) because you’d simply helped heal a first year after they’d been punished. it seemed as though a lot of the older students at hogwarts had been doing this frequently. it was mutually agreed it was much better that you’d get hurt over the younger students.

especially you. being the partner of the infamous harry potter had its upsides, everyone knew you from harry, which you really never minded, and you loved him. you’d been through so much together, you thought nothing would break the bond you’d made with him, until now.

with your current situation, you couldn’t help but think it would be better if you weren’t together, at least as publicly as you were. you’d get special ‘treatment’, though that’s hardly what you’d call it. to put it simply; you were the carrow’s favourite target.

maybe things wouldn’t have been so bad if he were here to comfort you, to keep you safe. to tell you it would all be okay. but he wasn't there. he’d left you behind. he’d taken hermione and ron to find and destroy the horcruxes, and left you without even a goodbye. you understood that he wanted to keep you safe, but you wanted to do the same for him as well.

besides, hogwarts didn’t feel like home anymore. it was more so a prison than anything, and it definitely wasn’t safe.

the carrows cackled as they hit you with curse after curse, you doing your best as to not cry. it always made things worse, you’d learned numerous times. “crying is a sign of weakness, they’d say, “we have to toughen you up.”

now, you’ve trained yourself to sit quietly through your punishment, as much pain you went through, it would only get worse the louder you were. you’d experienced the cruciatus curse so many times, you were beginning to feel numb through it all.

finally, the two got bored of you and sent you on your way. you’d stood tall leaving the room, but once you were out of site, you broke down crying. you weren’t sure how much more of the torture you could take; you were only 17, a child. you put on a brave front for the younger years, but you were still only just a young witch.

you sat there, knees pulled to your chest as you cried quietly, as the pain agonizingly slowly faded. while your tears dried, you sat in silence for a moment before you heard the carrows coming down the corridor. you quickly ducked behind a pillar and pressed your back to it, not wanting anyone to see you in this state.

“someones spotted potter in hogsmeade!” they whisper-shouted, walking briskly through the hall.

“i’m aware. we must prepare, the time is coming.” the other voice replied. you couldn’t quite makeout who was who, but it didn’t matter. you were more focused on what they’d said. harry had been spotted? you hadn’t heard from him since he’d left, but surely if he was to return you’d know, right? no, it mustn't have been him; you knew better than to get your hopes up in a time like this.

and what were they on about? ‘the time is coming?’ your head hurt trying to process what you’d just heard. you waited for the pair to walk out of sight before getting up, using a quick spell to fix your appearance and made your way to the great hall.

on the way, you weren’t paying much attention and before you knew it, a body slammed into yours. you didn’t realize who it was until you looked down and registered the long, fiery red hair cascading down her back. “ginny?” you asked, confused.

she’d obviously been in a rush of some sort, and the youngest weasley looked up at you concerned. “y/n! i-i’ve been looking.. for you.. everywhere!” she panted, out of breath.

“woah ginny, slow down! what's going on?” you asked, but before the ginger haired girl had a chance to reply, screams were heard all throughout the castle, and a large commotion was heard as students flooded the staircases. “what the hell?”

“y/n, it’s about harry.” ginny said, a nervous expression on her face. as the swarm of students headed their way, you grabbed her and pulled her aside.

“tell me whats going on!” you exclaimed, overwhelmed and frustrated.

“he’s back. he’s in the castle.” the younger girl said, leaving you speechless.

“he’s.. here? harry’s here?” you suddenly felt something you hadn’t felt in the longest time; hope. you almost left right then but ginny grabbed you before you could. a confused expression found its way onto your face and she sighed.

“y/n, snape knows. professor mcgonagall is securing the castle now.”  at this, she froze. they wouldn’t secure the castle unless..

“ginny, what are you saying?” though she thought she knew the answer, she was really hoping she was wrong.

“y/n, it’s time. the war is here.”

she explained everything that had happened in the great hall, and that harry had set off somewhere to find the diadem. you’d thanked her, told her to be careful (she said the same to you) and headed your separate ways. you could barely move among the sea of students, and soon you find yourself being pulled out by someone.

“y/n! can you help me evacuate all the younger students? we can’t let anyone get to them.” cho begged, and as much as you wanted to find harry, you knew what was more important at that moment and followed her.

by the time you rounded up all the students who didn’t wish to fight or were too young to fight, you stepped out to a window to see the barrier cracking. you looked at cho and nodded, her doing the same.

you both knew what was coming. you were never the closest of friends, but you got along well and never disliked each other. you gave her a quick hug, muttering “stay safe” and leaving her to find harry before it was too late.

you searched all the staircases, hearing screams and spells being shot left and right. you stopped momentarily to help a few outnumbered students on your way, and nearly gave up hope when you finally got a glimpse of fiery red hair you recognized immediately.

“ron!” you called, running down the steps to meet him. he turned, an expression of relief on his face as you hugged him tightly. you let go and hugged hermione, the three of you panting hard and despite the situation, were genuinely happy to see each other.

“is he here?” you asked, hope lacing your voice.

“he’s..” hermione hesitated, and you only now realized the tears staining both their faces.

“where is he?” you asked, frantically.

a sudden commotion outside caught your attention, and the three of you ran outside. before you, stood voldemort and his followers.

you glanced over to hagrid, seeing him holding a strange figure and before you had the chance to process, you heard voldemort speak.

“harry potter.. is dead!”

you refused to believe it, but as hagrid stepped forward, you knew it was true. you felt your heart breaking, falling to your knees, silent tears cascading down your cheeks.

you felt numb. he was dead. the love of your life, the only thing that kept you going; was dead.

the rest of the world tuned out to you, you felt hermione and ron pick you up off the ground and hold you, but you weren’t listening. and then what happened next passed in a blur, harry jumped out of hagrid’s arms and a whole blown fight had started again, and you’d lost sight of harry.

you felt hermione and ron tugging you inside; you were clearly in no state to fight. they brought you into the great hall where madam pomfrey was tending to the wounded and had you help her; making use of your limited abilities whilst your shock wore off.

you only came to your senses when you heard a young girl’s scream, and giving madam pomfrey a quick look (to which she understood), you grabbed your wand and began helping as much as you could. upon running across the castle, you saw draco fleeing. “malfoy.” you muttered, loud enough for him to hear.

he froze, turning to you. no words were spoken, until you decided to speak. “why’d you do it draco?”

“i-” he hesitated, looking around. “i had no choice.” you pitied him, and opened your mouth to speak again, when draco looked behind him, his eyes blown wide.

“y/n look ou-” you felt a sharp pain fill you, before you collapsed to the ground, your eyes shutting.

draco watched as his aunt laughed maniacally and sauntered off, as if she hadn’t just killed someone. he looked down at your lifeless body, and his figure wracked with sobs. you were dead, and it was potentially his fault. his classmate; you may have been potter’s significant other, but he couldn’t leave you here.

you deserved better.

he scooped you up and disapparated to the great hall, in a secluded corner. he gently put you down where you would be seen and left without another glance.

it was over. it was finally over. they’d won. voldemort was dead. the students of hogwarts slowly flooded into the great hall, all finding their families and mourning over the lost. harry, ron and hermione were sat with the weasleys, saying their goodbyes to fred.

harry had been looking for you since he’d arrived and had yet to see you. he politely excused himself from the weasleys, allowing them their space and went to madam pomfrey, who seemed to know the most,

“excuse me, madam pomfrey? i know you’re busy, but have you seen y/n?” the matron looked at the boy with a sad expression. she glanced over to your body, his gaze following and his heart stopped.

“i’m sorry, dear.” with that, she offered a small smile and went off to finish helping the others.

he stood frozen in the middle of the great hall, the place with so many happy memories of not only the two of you, but with ron and hermione as well. now he felt nothing but pure sadness staring at the place where you lay lifeless. ‘this is all my fault’ was the only thought running through his head, he couldn’t bring himself to even see your body.

hermione walked over, “is everything alright harry? did you find them?” he couldn’t even bring himself to speak, instead she followed his gaze and a gasp left her lips. she pulled harry into a tight hug.

“it’ll be okay harry.” she said, though she didn’t sound convincing. nothing was going to be okay now. all he’d ever wanted to do was protect you. but he was too late, and now you were dead. all because of him.

“i was too late.. i’m sorry.”
