pairing: draco malfoy x granger!reader

warnings: n/a

a/n: i didn’t know what to title this tbh

request: Could I get a soulmate AU with Draco, but the problem is they’re Hermione’s squib sibling and they only see a glimpse of each other every time they go to pick Hermione up, and after the war is over Draco makes it his number one priority to find his soulmate.

-

draco malfoy was far from a traditional wizard in attendance at hogwarts. he held a certain power over others; a title he was given by blood. he was superior, and that was one thing he had always known.

everything in his life was set for him, and due to his family’s powers and riches, anything he wanted, was already his.

he had witches and wizards falling at his feet by first year, some searching for friendship and power, some looking for a relationship.

none of them peaked his interest.

save for one, at the train station. it started in his first year at hogwarts. it was finally time for winter holidays; a time where he could finally escape the madness that was his school, and the disgusting amount of blood traitors and muggleborns he was forced to see on the daily.

as he was stepping off the grand train that took him between homes, he saw their beautiful hair and stunning eyes for a mere second, before losing them in the crowd. it was enough. he was intrigued, he hadn’t recognized them and for the first time since starting hogwarts, he had a strange sense of excitement.

he searched, briefly, before he was escorted home by his parents, for one last glimpse at the person who he’d been itching to know. giving up, he met with the elder malfoys, returning to the manor for the break.

when he was returning to hogwarts after that very break, he spotted them again, beginning to make his way over to introduce himself, only to be pushed and yell “watch it!” to whoever was passing. when he turned, the person he was looking for had disappeared.

when he returned to school, he made it a mission to find said person. as far as he now knew, they did not attend hogwarts, which meant they were likely not a wizard/witch, but must have been related to one. the thought of a non-magical being plaguing his thoughts made a shiver run down his spine. and that was that.

still, every time he was forced to enter the station, he found his eyes lingering in the crowd, looking for someone in particular. he convinced himself long ago that it was only to scowl in their direction, treating them as they deserved. he found a strange comfort in that fact, and though throughout his school years felt childish, he had drilled it into his head from age 11 and it had become an addiction routine, one he couldn’t seem to break.

you see, during draco’s early years, his mother had taught him that should he ever feel an immediate pull to someone, he should follow it.

it was a stupid concept to him at the time, really; soulmates were one of the rarest (and in his opinion, most ridiculous) concepts known to the wizarding world. very few were lucky enough to experience it, though everyone had a potential soulmate, not many every found their lovers.

narcissa made it very clear that no matter the circumstances, if he were ever to feel a pull to a stranger or to someone he never thought he would; he was to follow it.

so now as he stood before the train one last time, he felt his eyes dancing over the crowds, as usual. they had just come back from their final year at hogwarts, after the war.

most of his year was spent in solitude at the school, though few students forgave him, he wanted to finish his school just as much as the rest of his year. he managed; he was never too fond of social interactions anyways.

it was better to be alone.

a small tinge pulled at his heart as he stared at the great big transport for what he felt would be the last time. a sudden overwhelming urge to turn his head to the left washed over him, and confusedly, he did so. and when his eyes fell upon the person he’d spent so many nights dreaming of, he huffed and pushed his way through the crowd; this time not making the mistake of taking his eyes off of you.

you were catching up with your sister, hermione, when your head began to feel light, and you subconsciously turned your head to the right, seeing a beautiful blonde man seemingly approaching you. you internally laugh at yourself; as if a wizard like him would want someone like you. powerless, ugly. you were nothing next to your sister, and everyone knew it.

you and hermione began making your way out of the station, before a deep voice yelled “wait!” and came running after you both.

you turned in confusion, seeing the blonde boy standing before you, his tie slightly undone from running and his hair spread messily. you furrowed your brows, looking to hermione, who looked just as confused as you.

“draco? is there something i can help you with?” she asked politely, though she seemed slightly uncomfortable by the name. that’s when it clicked, this must be draco malfoy; the boy who tormented hermione since her first year at hogwarts, calling her horrible names due to her non-magical family.

suddenly, you stepped slightly closer to her, feeling very protective of your sister. she seemed to notice however, and gave you a reassuring smile. had you missed something?

“uh, maybe.. kind of, i suppose. i came to see you.” the last word was directed at you, and you blushed profusely, choking on the air you were inhaling.

“m-me?” you asked, unbelieving. he nodded, and looked to hermione, whose jaw was nearly on the floor.

“what is it you want with my sibling then, malfoy?” she asked, more curiously than defensively. he sighed, ready to embarrass himself fully. if it meant talking to you, then so be it.

“mother said if i ever were to find someone and feel drawn to them, as though we were connected; i must speak to her. say, h-have you.. do you believe in soulmates, granger?” you had never seen hermione look so confused at something in your life. she was a know-it-all, down to every last detail.

now however, she was clearly at a loss for words. you made a mental note to congratulate draco afterwards, as you had never in all your years been able to accomplish that.

it was only then that you realized what draco was implying. did he think you were his soulmate? you had a hard time believing in magic as is, and now you were finding out that soulmates were not only real, but yours was potentially right in front of you?

“you think my sibling is your soulmate?!” she finally managed, and you took the time to analyze the boy. strangely, though you’d never met him, you felt like he was someone you could trust and confide in at the drop of a hat.

considering the stories hermione had informed you of over the years, you definitely should not feel as safe as you do around him, but there was something almost calming about his presence.

hermione was about to say something again, before you stepped forward, interrupting her. “i don’t think we’ve formally met. i’m y/n granger.” you stuck out a hand, and he smiled, gratefully accepting it.

“draco malfoy, though something tells me you already knew that.” hermione looked highly uncomfortable, and spotting ron, she quickly dismissed herself and ran off to meet him, not that you nor draco paid much attention to her departure.

“i hope i didn’t scare you too much, what with all the soulmate talk.” he started, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.

“oh, you most certainly did.” you teased, and he tensed, before seeing your silly expression and relaxing. “i must say, you’ve piqued my interest. i’m not a magic expert, though, i’d love to hear more about it.” you smirked, and he glanced over your face, looking for any sign of a lie. he found none.

“well-” he started, but hermione once again interrupted.

“y/n, we need to go now.” she sounded sorry, clearly seeing the genuine happiness on her sibling’s features.

you frowned, turning to draco. “you know, i suppose maybe i could explain it to you over tea sometime?” he asked hopefully, a smile gracing his features.

you smiled back excitedly, “i would like that.” he gently picked up your hand, pressing a feather-light kiss to your knuckles.

“i shall send your sister an owl with the details, until then, love.” with that, he winked, and walked away, leaving you a blushing mess.

“love?” hermione was practically wheezing in laughter, and you only rolled your eyes in response as the two of you made your way to your parents’ car.

“shut up.”

“i can’t believe you’re going on a date with draco malfoy!” you smiled softly at the mention of his name, and hermione caught notice.

“do you really think he could be your soulmate?” she asked softly, and you sighed dreamily.

“yes, i do.”

pairing: draco malfoy x gn!reader

warnings: none i think

a/n: i only proofread this once, please bare with me! also i made the reader gender neutral, i want to make as many of my imagines for everyone as i can!

request: Can I request something where it’s DracoX!femreader and she is friends with Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco but Draco gets jealous when he sees her talking, laughing and just hanging out with them. Maybe Harry or Ron finally does something that sets Draco off? (submitted by @buckys-hoeee)

-

not a lot of things bothered draco malfoy. he was a pureblood slytherin who everyone knew and was scared of. he was titled the slytherin prince for godric’s sake. he had everything he wanted and more all to himself. that was everything, with the exception of you.

you were one of the most beautiful people draco malfoy had ever seen. you were a pureblood, just like him, though you were in another house. your house meant nothing to him at this point though, it was the people you’d chosen to associate yourself with that set him off.

the ‘golden trio’ of hogwarts, they called themselves; hermione granger, ron wealsey and his biggest rival, harry potter. the thought boiled his blood.

you weren’t like the other students at hogwarts. you didn’t swoon over him, but you didn’t despise him either. you were different.

you treated him like a genuine person, a friend even, and that is what really caught him. he wasn’t thought of as a monster to you. he was simply draco malfoy. you didn’t care about status or houses. you were perfect.

which is also why draco didn’t deserve you. he knew this. you were happy with your friends, as much as he hated the trio, seeing you happy made everything okay. you would hang out with him alone; usually your hangouts consisted of late nights watching the stars from the astronomy tower, and that was enough for him.

it was a long last few weeks at hogwarts, students left and right running around, cramming as much knowledge into their heads as they could before the commencement of o.w.l.s and n.e.w.t.s. draco had felt like his entire week had consisted of rereading books and notes and he felt as if his head was about to explode.

he hadn’t seen you in a few days, so he decided to see if he could find you. he knew some of your favourite spots, so he threw his books in his bag and ventured off into the castle to track down his friend.

he searched the library first, as it was your go-to studying place, but after searching the entire library (it was quite full) he realized you weren’t there. he checked your common room next, asking if anyone had seen you, only to yet again be found with nothing but your confused housemates.

he then checked the great hall, the courtyard, and the black lake. he’d checked all of your favourite spots, and you were nowhere to be found. “where are they..?” he wondered out loud, thinking hard. there was only one last spot he could think of.

he looked up at the long staircase leading up to the astronomy tower, and as he began his ascent, he heard multiple voices, confusion washing over him. he hadn’t ever seen anyone else up in the tower. he almost left when he heard your laugh. he smiled, until he listened closer and could make out the other voices.

“how am i supposed to know all this? bloody hell i can barely remember where i’ve left my wand!” weasley exclaimed, exasperated.

“ron, if you actually paid attention you wouldn’t have this problem!” granger replied.

“we’ve been studying for hours, hermione! can’t we do something else?” potter asked, clearly bored. draco had had enough. had you really taken them to your shared spot? he marched up the steps, scaring the four wizards at the top.

“how could you bring them here?” he yelled, taking you aback.

“draco, what are you talking about?” you asked, clearly confused. he looked around at the trio; at his enemies, and scoffed. he turned on his heel and stormed off down the stairs.

he could hear you chasing after him, but chose to ignore it as he ran back to his common room. just as he stopped at the portrait, a hand grabbed his arm and pulled him back, shoving him into a storage closet and closing the door behind him.

“what the hell-” he spat, before a hand covered his mouth. after a moment his eyes adjusted to the dark light in the closet and he found himself alone with you, not to his surprise.

a small blush rose to his cheeks at your proximity, but much to his delight, it was much too dark for you to notice. he quickly remembered why he was in this situation and tried to push past you, only to be pushed back.

“you’re not leaving until you answer my question. why were you so upset up in the astronomy tower?” draco looked at his feet, unable to make eye contact. “draco.” you pushed, hearing him sigh. “you can’t just ignore me-”

“fine, alright?” he cut you off, “i haven’t seen you in days y/n, you’ve been too busy studying or hanging out with.. potter.” he spat, an unusually venomous tone leaving his lips. you opened their mouth to speak, but he wasn’t finished.

“all i wanted was to spend some time with you. i searched the entire school; only to find out you’ve taken them to our spot? how could you do this to me?” he breathed, his hurt obvious, tinged with another emotion he couldn’t make out.

an awkward silence followed, neither of the two knowing what to say. “i didn’t know it meant so much to you, draco.” you started, slowly. “i really am sorry. i won’t take them up there again.” you offered an apologetic smile, and he forced a smile back, ready to leave. before he could though, you spoke again.

“you don’t have to answer, but.. may i ask why it means so much to you?” at this, draco froze. he wanted to say it was because of potter, but he knew it wasn’t true. and he knew you did too.

“well.. if you haven’t noticed, not a lot of people.. like me. they fear me. they hate me.” he spilled, avoiding meeting your gaze. “but you.. you never hated me. i may put up a strong front, but it was nice to find someone to talk to without worrying about titles, or blood status.”

you listened intently, focusing on every word. “once i saw you with potter and weasley in our spot.. it just made me feel so angry and betrayed. i don’t know.” he finished, the awkward feeling of confession weighing on him like a ton of bricks.

it was quiet, much too quiet for his liking, and he reached for the doorknob to leave. however, you took his hand in yours, and turned him to face you. you hesitated, choosing your words carefully, before you spoke. “draco, were you jealous? of me spending time with harry, ron and hermione?”

he looked you in the eyes, seeing nothing but sympathy and genuine interest, before his gaze met the floor. you sighed, grasping his chin lightly and moving his gaze to yours. “i am sorry. really. i never meant to make you feel like this. i promise i’ll make it up to you.” you smiled, and he felt himself smiling as well.

you gently opened the closet door, stepping out. you paused, turning around to face him, and in a split second, you stepped up, kissing him on the cheek. “goodnight draco.” with that, you scurried off, leaving him standing there grinning like an idiot and speechless.

he blinked, before closing the closet and going straight to his dorm. he gently touched his cheek where your lips met his skin, a soft smile plastered on his lips. one reserved just for you.

“mate, what are you smiling about?” blaise asked, a sleepy and amused expression on his face.

“nothing zabini, go back to sleep.” draco snapped jokingly, flopping down on his bed with one person on his mind. ‘y/n l/n.. what are you doing to me?’

-

you glared harshly at the two adults who had made your life a living hell. amycus and alecto carrow, two new professors at hogwarts, who had claimed responsibility for disciplining students. you hadn’t bothered to keep track of how many times you’d been tortured by the two, but at this point, it didn’t really matter.

currently, you were missing an emergency meeting called by the headmaster (though you refused to address him as such) because you’d simply helped heal a first year after they’d been punished. it seemed as though a lot of the older students at hogwarts had been doing this frequently. it was mutually agreed it was much better that you’d get hurt over the younger students.

especially you. being the partner of the infamous harry potter had its upsides, everyone knew you from harry, which you really never minded, and you loved him. you’d been through so much together, you thought nothing would break the bond you’d made with him, until now.

with your current situation, you couldn’t help but think it would be better if you weren’t together, at least as publicly as you were. you’d get special ‘treatment’, though that’s hardly what you’d call it. to put it simply; you were the carrow’s favourite target.

maybe things wouldn’t have been so bad if he were here to comfort you, to keep you safe. to tell you it would all be okay. but he wasn't there. he’d left you behind. he’d taken hermione and ron to find and destroy the horcruxes, and left you without even a goodbye. you understood that he wanted to keep you safe, but you wanted to do the same for him as well.

besides, hogwarts didn’t feel like home anymore. it was more so a prison than anything, and it definitely wasn’t safe.

the carrows cackled as they hit you with curse after curse, you doing your best as to not cry. it always made things worse, you’d learned numerous times. “crying is a sign of weakness, they’d say, “we have to toughen you up.”

now, you’ve trained yourself to sit quietly through your punishment, as much pain you went through, it would only get worse the louder you were. you’d experienced the cruciatus curse so many times, you were beginning to feel numb through it all.

finally, the two got bored of you and sent you on your way. you’d stood tall leaving the room, but once you were out of site, you broke down crying. you weren’t sure how much more of the torture you could take; you were only 17, a child. you put on a brave front for the younger years, but you were still only just a young witch.

you sat there, knees pulled to your chest as you cried quietly, as the pain agonizingly slowly faded. while your tears dried, you sat in silence for a moment before you heard the carrows coming down the corridor. you quickly ducked behind a pillar and pressed your back to it, not wanting anyone to see you in this state.

“someones spotted potter in hogsmeade!” they whisper-shouted, walking briskly through the hall.

“i’m aware. we must prepare, the time is coming.” the other voice replied. you couldn’t quite makeout who was who, but it didn’t matter. you were more focused on what they’d said. harry had been spotted? you hadn’t heard from him since he’d left, but surely if he was to return you’d know, right? no, it mustn't have been him; you knew better than to get your hopes up in a time like this.

and what were they on about? ‘the time is coming?’ your head hurt trying to process what you’d just heard. you waited for the pair to walk out of sight before getting up, using a quick spell to fix your appearance and made your way to the great hall.

on the way, you weren’t paying much attention and before you knew it, a body slammed into yours. you didn’t realize who it was until you looked down and registered the long, fiery red hair cascading down her back. “ginny?” you asked, confused.

she’d obviously been in a rush of some sort, and the youngest weasley looked up at you concerned. “y/n! i-i’ve been looking.. for you.. everywhere!” she panted, out of breath.

“woah ginny, slow down! what's going on?” you asked, but before the ginger haired girl had a chance to reply, screams were heard all throughout the castle, and a large commotion was heard as students flooded the staircases. “what the hell?”

“y/n, it’s about harry.” ginny said, a nervous expression on her face. as the swarm of students headed their way, you grabbed her and pulled her aside.

“tell me whats going on!” you exclaimed, overwhelmed and frustrated.

“he’s back. he’s in the castle.” the younger girl said, leaving you speechless.

“he’s.. here? harry’s here?” you suddenly felt something you hadn’t felt in the longest time; hope. you almost left right then but ginny grabbed you before you could. a confused expression found its way onto your face and she sighed.

“y/n, snape knows. professor mcgonagall is securing the castle now.”  at this, she froze. they wouldn’t secure the castle unless..

“ginny, what are you saying?” though she thought she knew the answer, she was really hoping she was wrong.

“y/n, it’s time. the war is here.”

she explained everything that had happened in the great hall, and that harry had set off somewhere to find the diadem. you’d thanked her, told her to be careful (she said the same to you) and headed your separate ways. you could barely move among the sea of students, and soon you find yourself being pulled out by someone.

“y/n! can you help me evacuate all the younger students? we can’t let anyone get to them.” cho begged, and as much as you wanted to find harry, you knew what was more important at that moment and followed her.

by the time you rounded up all the students who didn’t wish to fight or were too young to fight, you stepped out to a window to see the barrier cracking. you looked at cho and nodded, her doing the same.

you both knew what was coming. you were never the closest of friends, but you got along well and never disliked each other. you gave her a quick hug, muttering “stay safe” and leaving her to find harry before it was too late.

you searched all the staircases, hearing screams and spells being shot left and right. you stopped momentarily to help a few outnumbered students on your way, and nearly gave up hope when you finally got a glimpse of fiery red hair you recognized immediately.

“ron!” you called, running down the steps to meet him. he turned, an expression of relief on his face as you hugged him tightly. you let go and hugged hermione, the three of you panting hard and despite the situation, were genuinely happy to see each other.

“is he here?” you asked, hope lacing your voice.

“he’s..” hermione hesitated, and you only now realized the tears staining both their faces.

“where is he?” you asked, frantically.

a sudden commotion outside caught your attention, and the three of you ran outside. before you, stood voldemort and his followers.

you glanced over to hagrid, seeing him holding a strange figure and before you had the chance to process, you heard voldemort speak.

“harry potter.. is dead!”

you refused to believe it, but as hagrid stepped forward, you knew it was true. you felt your heart breaking, falling to your knees, silent tears cascading down your cheeks.

you felt numb. he was dead. the love of your life, the only thing that kept you going; was dead.

the rest of the world tuned out to you, you felt hermione and ron pick you up off the ground and hold you, but you weren’t listening. and then what happened next passed in a blur, harry jumped out of hagrid’s arms and a whole blown fight had started again, and you’d lost sight of harry.

you felt hermione and ron tugging you inside; you were clearly in no state to fight. they brought you into the great hall where madam pomfrey was tending to the wounded and had you help her; making use of your limited abilities whilst your shock wore off.

you only came to your senses when you heard a young girl’s scream, and giving madam pomfrey a quick look (to which she understood), you grabbed your wand and began helping as much as you could. upon running across the castle, you saw draco fleeing. “malfoy.” you muttered, loud enough for him to hear.

he froze, turning to you. no words were spoken, until you decided to speak. “why’d you do it draco?”

“i-” he hesitated, looking around. “i had no choice.” you pitied him, and opened your mouth to speak again, when draco looked behind him, his eyes blown wide.

“y/n look ou-” you felt a sharp pain fill you, before you collapsed to the ground, your eyes shutting.

draco watched as his aunt laughed maniacally and sauntered off, as if she hadn’t just killed someone. he looked down at your lifeless body, and his figure wracked with sobs. you were dead, and it was potentially his fault. his classmate; you may have been potter’s significant other, but he couldn’t leave you here.

you deserved better.

he scooped you up and disapparated to the great hall, in a secluded corner. he gently put you down where you would be seen and left without another glance.

it was over. it was finally over. they’d won. voldemort was dead. the students of hogwarts slowly flooded into the great hall, all finding their families and mourning over the lost. harry, ron and hermione were sat with the weasleys, saying their goodbyes to fred.

harry had been looking for you since he’d arrived and had yet to see you. he politely excused himself from the weasleys, allowing them their space and went to madam pomfrey, who seemed to know the most,

“excuse me, madam pomfrey? i know you’re busy, but have you seen y/n?” the matron looked at the boy with a sad expression. she glanced over to your body, his gaze following and his heart stopped.

“i’m sorry, dear.” with that, she offered a small smile and went off to finish helping the others.

he stood frozen in the middle of the great hall, the place with so many happy memories of not only the two of you, but with ron and hermione as well. now he felt nothing but pure sadness staring at the place where you lay lifeless. ‘this is all my fault’ was the only thought running through his head, he couldn’t bring himself to even see your body.

hermione walked over, “is everything alright harry? did you find them?” he couldn’t even bring himself to speak, instead she followed his gaze and a gasp left her lips. she pulled harry into a tight hug.

“it’ll be okay harry.” she said, though she didn’t sound convincing. nothing was going to be okay now. all he’d ever wanted to do was protect you. but he was too late, and now you were dead. all because of him.

“i was too late.. i’m sorry.”

a sigh escaped your lips as you rummaged through the old box you had stored in your bedroom. you had just arrived home after the end of your 7th year term, and you were sorting your things. the war was finally over, and finally for once in your life, things had started to feel almost normal.

you were just getting through your final year, you did have to repeat it due to the horrors of your last year, where every corner you’d find a curse waiting to be thrown at you. you finished your exams with the grades you tried so hard to get and were happy with how things had gone.

until you received an owl a few days before you were due to return home, that you and your family were to move to america within the coming weeks. you hadn’t wanted to leave, but your parents assured you that leaving would be best for you, with all the traumatic experiences you’d faced.

you lost the only person you loved in the war, yes, but you were managing well, with the help of your best and closest friends. you didn’t know how you would survive without them.

besides that, you had grown up in england, in this very house, and with every bit of decoration being placed in various boxes, you felt your childhood being picked apart piece by piece.

it was hard for you, having had some of your best memories in the old building. which is why when you stumbled upon a dusty, yet distinguishable box you vividly recalled, you couldn’t pull yourself from the urge to go through it.

you pulled the box with you as you sat on the edge of your bed, gently lifting the lid and smiling as your eyes glanced over the contents. it was filled with polaroid pictures; a camera that was gifted from your muggle aunt, that you forced him to take pictures of you both with on multiple occasions.

you ran your hand gently over the pile, your hand grazing a random one and picking it up, smiling fondly as you reminisced.

---

an 11 year-old version of yourself stood shakily in front of the brick wall, your heart racing. your mother ran briskly behind you, catching up to your small form quickly. glancing at her wrist, your mother cursed under her breath and grabbed your wrist, pulling you without warning through the passage to what would be your new home.

the platform was quite intimidating, parents and children running here and there, scrambling to get onto the train. you bid your mother goodbye, and without much protest, found your way onto the train.

being a first year student was hard, and you wanted to find yourself an empty compartment, rather than having to ask someone to sit with them and risk rejection. you found one quickly, pulling out your camera and a book and throwing your case above, relaxing in the seat.

your silence was only interrupted by the door flying open, and two identical redheaded boys who looked a few years older than you, sat down in front of you. you blinked in shock, when one of the two reached out a hand to you.

“fred weasley. this is my brother, george. we’re third years. mind if we join you?” you took a second, before hesitantly taking his hand and shaking it, followed by george’s.

“y/n l/n.”

“say, what’s that?” george piped up, pointing to the polaroid sitting next to you.

“it’s my camera, see!” you spoke enthusiastically, the pride of your camera overwhelming you. they seemed intrigued, so after a quick explanation, fred spoke up.

“could we take a picture together?” you looked at him, making sure he wasn’t messing around or making fun of you, but he seemed genuine. you smiled, agreeing. you slipped in between the two twins, fred taking the camera due to his longer arm, and you all posed as he snapped the picture.

a single tear slid down your cheek as you took in the memory, taking in a deep breath. that was only the first of many interactions you had with the weasley twins. a sad, yet meaningful chuckle escaped your lips.

if only you had known back then how important those boys were going to be in your life, you would’ve gotten to know them better right then and there. sure, they were three years older than you, but they acted as though they were three younger.

laying the polaroid on your bed, you fished out another one. a picture of you, angelina, fred, harry and george; harry on george and fred’s shoulders, you tucked under fred’s free arm and angelina tucked under george’s.

---

you swiftly caught the quaffle, weaving your way through opposing players and an occasional bludger, the wind whipping gracefully through your hair. you caught sight of angelina, a fellow chaser, with an open shot, yet was undetected by the ravenclaws seemingly swarming you.

with a quick dip and sharp turn of your broom, you effectively distracted your pursuers, easily throwing the quaffle to angelina, allowing her to score. this went on for another twenty or so minutes, before you finally heard the announcer call that harry had caught the snitch.

you all landed cheering, meeting your team in the middle of the field and embracing one another. you saw ron and hermione running up to you, your polaroid clutched tightly in hermione’s hands.

as oliver gave his typical gloating speech and dismissed the team, hermione quickly called you all over to take a picture. the two gingers swiftly lifted up the chosen boy, and were quick to grab you and angelina as well, all of you smiling as hermione took the picture.

she waited a few moments for it to process, looking at it with pride. you slid out of fred’s arm to collect the picture, pretending to judge it.

“it’s perfect.” you affirmed. she beamed, and you glanced at up at your friends, exchanging smiles, and one noticeably larger smile to a special someone.

it was the simple memories like this that were your favourite. you didn’t need to worry about harry, ron or hermione getting themselves into trouble with the dark lord, these moments were the very few normal times where you could all just pretend there wasn’t a war looming over you, ready to happen at any given moment.

you smiled, sorting through the rest of the polaroids until one in particular made your heart stop. you handled it with great delicacy, the tears now freely flowing as you looked at the beautiful image.

---

you stood anxiously in your mirror, twisting and twirling in front of it in a feeble attempt to gain confidence. it didn’t work however, and you let out a frustrated sigh. hermione peeked her head out from the bathroom, giggling when she saw the state you were in.

“y/n, you look amazing. stop worrying so much!”

you frowned at her, “hermione, look at you, then look at me! i don’t even compare.” you huffed, and she sighed.

“you know that’s not true, and besides, fred is going to love it.”

at this, you tensed. “hermione, we’re just friends.” you muttered, your cheeks flushing. the original plan had been for you to go as friends along with george, but he’d finally mustered up the courage to ask out angelina.

instead of letting it get to you, you and fred agreed to go just the two of you.

specified only as friends, of course. which meant it wasn’t a date, but hermione seemed to not be able to get this idea out of her head. “mhm.” she waved you off, re-entering the bathroom to finish off her look for the extravagant night.

when you were both finally ready, you stepped down the stairs together, giggling as excitement bubbled in your chest. hermione was meeting krum at the entrance to the ball, so you told fred to meet you there as well.

together, you made your way to your dates, and a foreign feeling of nerves washed over you as you quietly replayed hermione’s words in your head. you bit your lip as you turned the corner, smiling as your eyes landed on your not-date for the night.

stepping down the stairs, you had been a nervous wreck. only an hour later, you and fred were having the time of your life, dancing and singing to your hearts’ content.

it was like time had stopped around you, and that you two were the only ones who were there. you were in your own little bubble and you were on cloud nine. it was only in your last slow dance, that he kissed you for the first time. it wasn’t necessarily like the movies would show it, but it was perfect.

colin creevy found you the next day, handing you a perfectly taken polaroid of you and fred. it was during your special slow dance, you both gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes, moments before he leaned in. it looked as though you had posed for the picture, you couldn’t have loved the photo more.

it conveyed so much emotion, every unspoken word between you was portrayed. it was love, and anyone could see that. (you even loved it so much, you decided for once, to let it slide that the younger boy had been taking pictures of you without your knowledge in the first place.)

so as you sat on your bed, crying every last tear as sobs wracked your body, you couldn’t help but feel the ghost of his arms around you. every comforting word he ever spoke echoed in your mind.

“it’s okay, love.” “everything is going to be alright.” “i love you, forever.”

it was scary, really. you could’ve sworn he was right there next to you. but he wasn’t, and he was never going to be. he was gone; you were never going to see him again and you had to accept that.

you gently placed the polaroids back into the box, painfully swallowing as you packed it away with the rest of your things. you glanced around the almost empty bedroom you’d spent so many nights lying in his arms, or thinking about him; and suddenly, the thought of leaving didn’t seem so bad after all.
