Chapter 1 [a Tale As Old As Time]

a simple village life. that’s all you’d ever known.

everyday you walked the same paths, saw the same faces, ate the same food, read the same books. it was a never-ending cycle, almost as though you were secondary characters playing out their minimal roles in a story while the main characters lived out the adventures.

unlike the rest of the villagers, being a secondary character was not sufficient for you.

you craved more. you didn’t want to be just another number in the village, waiting for someone to come solve your problems and be your knight-in-shining-armour. you wanted to be a hero. the dragon slayer, or the retriever of stolen goods: someone a kingdom would celebrate and raise on their shoulders.

you wanted to be something special.

however, despite your wildest imaginations and the strain in your heart, you were nothing more than what you feared; a simple villager. another number, just like all the rest. there were no dragons to be slain, no thefts to be returned to their rightful owners, and damsels in distress waiting with bated breath for someone to save them were nowhere to be found.

unless you knew where to look.

you pushed open the hefty door, feeling a wave of euphoria wash over you as you stepped inside. this was the one place in the village that didn’t make you feel so small, so alone. it was a safehaven of sorts. an escape from reality.

as always, you greeted the librarian kindly before making your way to the shelves upon shelves of awaiting opportunities, each offering its own path at your desired heroics.

“what will it be today, y/n?” the old librarian asked, curiously. you shrugged, allowing your finger to run swiftly along the spines of the old, worn down books before closing your eyes and gently plucking one from the shelf. he peered over curiously, smiling fondly. “ah, romeo and juliet. a classic.”

you smiled brightly, tugging the book closely to your chest and spinning in a small circle dramatically. “oh, isn’t it lovely? the tale of star crossed lovers, fighting against all odds to be together? oh, what i would give for a love like theirs.” you sighed dreamily, the librarian laughing lightly at your antics.

“well, according to the town gossip, you have a mighty fine admirer who would adore your love and attention.” he teased, and you visibly rolled your eyes.

“you couldn’t possibly mean quackity.” you scoffed, “he is an egotistical streetrat that cares about nothing more than his appearance! he only ‘wants’ me because i don’t want him.” the librarian hummed in response, chuckling softly.

quackity was notorious in your quaint little village. he was the kind of person that everyone either wanted to be, or wanted to marry. save for you, of course. being upfront, you found him absolutely insufferable, and his ego was far too large to grasp that anyone could ‘resist his boyish charm’, as he put it. thus, his mission to gain your attention and wed you began.

you of course, would never stoop to the low that was him. not for any amount of books in the world.

“whatever you say, y/n.” he shook his head slowly, a playful expression adorning his features. “enjoy your reading, and make sure you pass on my hello to your old man!”

you agreed, thanking the librarian once more before walking back out onto the pebbled roads. on your journey home, you waved to the numerous villagers you passed, ignoring the judgemental stares they bestowed upon you.

you knew they didn’t approve of your free-spirited ways. in their minds, everyone had their roles to play. you simply didn’t play the role you were given, and in turn you became an outcast, a stranger. you tried not to pay them any mind, because you were happy with your lifestyle. the only issue you had was because of your father.

philza was highly respected in your small village. though he kept to himself most often, the people found him quite endearing, and pitied him for the loss of his wife and the struggles that came with raising a child on his own.

and although he assured you time and time again that you could never be a disappointment, you couldn’t help but imagine how much easier life would’ve been on him had you been like everyone else and followed the path that had been expected of you.

it was a constant internal war, the tugging in your heart begging you to pursue your desires, versus the overwhelming need to care for and stay with your father.

you always chose the latter, but realistically if you’d chosen otherwise, where would you even go?

-

technoblade wandered the familiar corridors, his mind off somewhere far from his own head. he did this often, allowing himself a chance to breathe without the rage that resonated inside of him bubbling over.

one would think he was lonely in the impossibly large building he called a home, but to him, it could not have been any smaller. years and years of listening to his once human staff beg him to leave to the outside, to find someone who could love him. someone to break the curse he brought upon them all.

he was never lonely. the only emotion he seemed to feel was anger, especially now. they were upon the last few petals that would seal their fates permanently. he had so much searing anger, he didn’t know what to do with it all. he was mad at the witch, for cursing them. he was mad at the world for fearing him.

but mostly, he was mad at himself, for being so wretched, he doomed the only people who ever cared for him to a fate worse than death.

his leisurely strolls gave him a sense of freedom, away from the talking teacups, dancing feather dusters and self-playing pianos. his time away from his friends was the only time he could pretend to not be aware of the fate they all awaited. pretend that he was just an average prince wandering about his castle.

techno’s ears perked, hearing the sound of heavy footsteps echoing through the mostly abandoned building. he snarled, his serenity broken and his suppressed anger returning with a fiery burn. he swiftly made his way to the banister overlooking the main entrance hall, careful to remain hidden from the eyes of the intruder.

“hello?” they called out. lurking in the shadows, technoblade watched as a shivering old man with a strange hat stumbled into his abode, abruptly and without welcome. “i’ve just come to escape the cold. i’ll be gone shortly!” his voice bounced off the chipped walls, receiving no response other than the echo of his own voice.

techno was livid. if there’s one thing he wasn’t fond of, it was ignorant humans. they served as a reminder of what he once was, and what he would never be again. how dare this man enter his home and be so blatantly rude?

all technoblade saw was red as he watched the old man situate himself in front of the fireplace. easily pulling an axe off the wall, he swung it over his shoulders, sneaking his way down to where the intruder stood.

stepping up behind him, techno snarled once more, catching the old man’s attention. he turned, slowly, and let out a scream. he instantly began to back away, and with each step backwards, techno took one forward. “you- you’re a…” the intruder stuttered, and techno bared his teeth, menacingly.

“a beast.” he whispered, a wicked smile on his face. he cackled, watching as the man in front of him trembled in fear. he was once again reminded of the reason he had isolated himself for all those years.

his expression darkened, thoughts ablaze as he hit the man with the knob of his axe, easily knocking him out. throwing the unconscious male over his shoulder, he ignored the stares of his transfigured peers and proceeded towards the dungeons, keen on having the traveller pay for his intrusion.

the last remaining bit of humanity he had tore at his subconscious, begging for him to reconsider. he simply brushed it off, however. all he did was act the role he was given. he was, after all, a monster.

and thanks to his curse, that’s all he would ever be.

-

you were hanging your freshly washed clothing, humming along a small tune as you did so. you performed a small intricate dance, wringing the delicate cloth and doing a small spin towards the wire, stringing it up and swaying back towards the pile to repeat the task.

a loud galloping sound brought you back down to earth, your head shooting in the direction of the sound. your eyes widened as you recognized the horse barrelling in your direction. “carl?” you muttered, rushing over. in spotting you, carl slowed, but thrashed and whined, worrying you instantly.

you ran a hand over his mane, worryingly searching behind him. “where’s father? carl, where is he?” you asked in a panic, only receiving a whine in return. a sinking feeling arose in your chest, expecting the worst. “take me to him.” you swiftly mounted the steed, holding tight as he took off in the direction he came.

you watched as the village came to an end, a never-before-seen landscape encasing your frontal and peripheral vision. an unexplainable rush of freedom and relief flooded you instantly upon feeling the change from the harsh cobblestone to soft dirt under carl’s hooves.

under better circumstances, you probably would’ve basked in the undeniable happiness and excitement threatening to spill out at the view of the new terrain before you. unfortunately, you hadn’t had the luxury of enjoying your first venture away from the village.

you had one thing on your mind, and that was saving your father.

you held tightly to carl's reins, eyes barely dancing over the foreign land as you passed. you soaked in as much of the greenery you could, and nearly gasped when you noticed what lay ahead.

as though separated by a drawn line, breaking off from the beautiful summer fields sat a forest that sent a wave of unease rushing through you. spiked branches stuck out from frozen trunks, a blanket of freshly fallen snow littering the ground.

you tugged on the reins as you approached, slowing to a walk as you entered the frozen-over area. passing from the summer to winter season sent a chill up your spine, both from the cold and from the nerves you felt in that moment.

up ahead, you noticed your father’s cart tipped over, its contents spilled haphazardly into the snow. you approached slowly, trying to be mindful of where carl stepped. it proved difficult, however, with the sudden harsh wind nipping at your bare skin. you were forced to squint to make out your surroundings, vaguely aware of the solid icicles hanging menacingly from above where you stood.

as another chill ran down your spine, you decided you shouldn’t dwell much longer, desperate to find some warmth and hopefully, your father. you urged carl to move forward cautiously. glancing ahead, your eyes widened as you took in the sight in front of you.

you entered a large clearing, the remnants of what looked to have been a gorgeous hedge garden. what still stood of the once lively hedges were wilted to a dull grey, covered completely in heavy layers of frost and ice. that wasn’t what caught your attention, however.

a little ways away, stood an exquisite castle that looked as though it had been long since abandoned. bits and pieces of the pristine exterior were cracked, missing, or simply looked as though they’d crumble under your body weight. still, there was no denying the beauty in its structure.

a sinking feeling washed over you as you proceeded along the grounds of the frozen kingdom, a lingering sense that something terrible had to have happened here. you wondered what.

whatever it was, you figured it must’ve been pretty bad, considering you were sure no one in the village knew this castle existed at all.

there was a tugging in your chest as you approached the breathtaking building that towered over your small figure. it was almost as though the building itself was calling to you in a way, like it was begging you to step foot inside.

you brushed it off as a mixture of excitement and your imagination.

pushing open the door, you gratefully rushed inside. you sighed in the sudden warmth, rubbing your arms frantically in hopes of warming yourself. you glanced around, taking in the enchanting sight before you. intricately carved pillars, cream coloured walls and a variety of strange looking trinkets littered the room.

you were broken out of your entrancement when the sound of cries broke through the eerie silence that filled the castle. you perked up, instantly recognizing the voice as your father’s. you followed the sound without question, your thoughts clouded and all sense of judgment out the door upon hearing the panic in his voice.

“father?” you called, your smile brightening as he came into view. “father! what happened? oh thank goodness you’re alright.” you squatted in front of him, eyes dancing over his face in search of severe injuries or anything of the sort.

“y/n?” he choked, forcing himself awake with harsh blinks. “y/n!” he suddenly jumped, though he looked anything but happy to see you. “you need to leave. now. before he sees you.” he whispered, urgently. you frowned, shaking your head.

“before who sees me? nevermind, it doesn’t matter. i won’t leave you. that’s nonsense!” you assured, eyes searching for anything to assist you in breaking your father free from the jail bars between you.

“you don’t understand, y/n. he’s not a man. he’s a-” philza tried, but you shushed him, waving him off. “he’s dangerous, y/n!” he raised his voice in frustration, and you finally looked at him, seriously.

“if he’s as dangerous as you say, i’m certainly not leaving you here with him.” you scoffed, continuing your search. you expected another retort, but received a dark chuckle instead.

“how noble of you.” a monotone voice hummed, stepping out from the shadows. you whirled around, determination set on your expression as you glanced at the outline of the mysterious man.

“let my father go.” you threatened, and his captor only laughed, humorlessly.

“your father,” he paused, emphasizing sarcasm on the word, “trespassed on my property uninvited. which, may i point out, you have also done.” he replied, nonchalantly. “i suggest you run along back home before i decide to make you cell mates with your dear-old-dad for the rest of your lives.”

turning on his heel, the mysterious man began to walk away, and in the heat of the moment, you did the only logical thing your brain could muster. “take me instead.” you rushed, catching the male’s attention.

“pardon me?” he turned, his voice filled with amusement. you felt your blood boil at his cockiness, scowling.

“you heard me. take me, let my father go free.” you stated, boldly. your father protested, but you simply ignored his presence for the time being.

“you clearly don’t know what you’re dealing with, child.” he shook his head, his devilish smirk barely visible through the darkness.

“i’m not a child!” you defended, and as he laughed at your response, you offered a smirk of your own, “show me what i’m dealing with, then.” you challenged, eliciting a scowl.

“fine, suit yourself.” he spat, finally stepping into the dim moonlight streaming in from the single window of the dungeon tower. your eyes widened, watching the light gently bounce off the tusks protruding from his bright pink flesh, a snout peeking out from a skull mask taken from an animal you couldn’t place.

“you’re a..” you breathed, and he rolled his eyes, as though he’d heard the same line several times before.

“a beast.” your father spat, and in turn received a glare from the monster before you. the beast then shrugged, a smirk lifting onto his lips once more.

“so, kid. you still want to trade places with your father, and stay here with me?” he taunted, and you swallowed as unnoticeably as you could, nodding firmly.

“i’m not a kid.” you muttered, annoyed. “if my father is left unharmed, i’ll stay with you without argument.” you agreed, and the beast seemed to ponder this, before nodding.

“very well.” he muttered, pulling out a large key and unlocking the cell. you instantly launched into your father’s open arms, hugging tightly.

“what have you done, y/n?” he muttered, and you shook your head sadly, offering the biggest smile you could muster. which admittedly, probably wasn’t very convincing.

“i saved you. that;s all that matters.” you whispered, finally pulling away from your father’s embrace when the beast cleared his throat. you stepped inside, allowing him to lock the door behind you.

“you, old man. get out.” the beast growled, and with one last parting gaze, your father begrudgingly left you behind. you listened as his footsteps grew distant, moving to the window to watch as he mounted carl, riding off into the night. you smiled, relieved to know he would be safe.

you heard fidgeting behind you, turning to watch as your fate was sealed with the turn of a lock. the pig-like man glared at you once more, before beginning to stalk off.

“wait!” you called, and he snarled. you took it as a notion of acknowledgment, so you brushed it off. “if i’m going to be staying here, can i at least know your name?” you asked, and he sighed, looking at you with an annoyed expression. you could’ve sworn there was something else behind his eyes, though.

“technoblade.” he mumbled, and didn’t leave you any time to respond, as he was long gone within moments. you tried out the name on your tongue, the name feeling foreign. as far as names went though, his seemed pretty fitting.

as the silence surrounded you, you leaned your back against the cool stone wall, allowing yourself to sink to the floor. it seemed as though your head had finally caught up with your heart, the sinking realization at what exactly you’d just done coming to light.

you were a prisoner.

not only that, you were a prisoner to a monstrous beast.

and no one, not even quackity in all his egotistical glory, could save you now.

ayo if this blog is known for anything it’s high school aus tbhhh

under the bleachers [sapnap]

pairing: sapnap x gn!reader

pronouns: they/them

synopsis: high school au!, jock!sapnap x unpopular!reader

wc: 2.6k

anon asked: "i am sapnap quenched, may I pls have some sapnap angst like maybe he gets jealous or there is a misunderstanding between you two causing an argument but it results in fluff"

a/n: i already had started this au, and anon gave me inspo to finish it! i hope this satisfies your sapnap needs :)

tw: couple of swears, angst to fluff!

in the movies, high school was all about the social hierarchy. the jocks and preps ruled the schools, while the nerds resided at the very bottom, with nothing to show but their shamed fashion and annoyingly high test grades.

when you got to high school, you imagined it would be different. it wasn’t, really. sure, it may not have been quite as eccentric as the movies foretold, but the gist of it remained. the athletes and cheerleaders held their heads high, though you guessed their status was more so earned from their bullying and threats rather than the sports they played. nerds were still disregarded, but they didn't all have horrible taste in clothes, if you did say so yourself.

brushing off your chosen outfit of the day, you sighed as you slid your books out of your bag, filing them nicely into your locker. you pulled out your book for your first class, sighing as the sounds of students scrambling about filled your ears. just another day at smp high.

“morning, y/n!” your friends wilbur and niki smiled as they approached, wilbur’s arm thrown lazily around niki’s shoulders. you arched a brow, but the two of them ignored your look, more than used to your antics.

“morning, guys.” you mumbled, finally shutting your locker and slipping off with the two of them, walking towards your first class.

“rough morning, y/n?” niki asked, frowning slightly. you shrugged, fighting off a yawn as the three of you stopped in front of the door. the two of them began the morning with music, while you started with chemistry.

“i’ll be fine once the coffee kicks in. don’t worry about me, have fun in class.” you smiled reassuringly, waving the two off as they entered the class, you continued down the hallway, avoiding teenagers running frantically to get to their homerooms on time.

you calmly reached your lab, entering and seating yourself in the same seat, in the far left of the class, middle row. also unlike the infamous “nerdy” stereotypes, you didn’t enjoy sitting front and center, and kept to yourself unless called upon. you quietly opened your book as instructed on the board in front of you, just as the bell for the period rang.

the lesson dragged on, you taking notes all the while. before you knew it, the bell rang once more, dismissing the class. you began to pile your things, when suddenly an arm came by and swept under your things, sending them all tumbling to the floor. you looked up, fighting the urge to roll your eyes.

“oops.. sorry about that.” sapnap snickered sarcastically. his friends behind him, dream and george, laughed loudly. you kept your expression stoic as you bent down to collect your things, scoffing at their childish actions.

the “dream team” as they insisted to be addressed, quickly got bored and left, probably to bully some freshman. they were your typical star athletes, with dream captaining and sapnap playing on the football team, and george captaining the soccer team. as most ‘jocks’ do, they had over inflated egos and you couldn't stand them.

as you gathered the materials off the floor, you noticed a small folded note. you looked around, but you realized you were the last student so you swept it into your pile and quickly made your way back to your locker to swap your books. you pulled out the note curiously, unfolding it.

‘y/n. meet me under the bleachers after class.’ you frowned, blinking down at the small crumpled paper in your hand. there was no signature, but you knew exactly who it wrote the message from the messy handwriting. sighing, you threw the note back into your locker, pulling out your next book, and pushing it out of your mind.

the rest of the day was uneventful, until the final bell rang and you quickly threw your books into your bag messily. niki and wilbur looked at you concerned, exchanging a small glance. they decided not to speak on it though, simply rearranging their own lockers for the night.

“i’m gonna walk home today, i think. it’s been a long day, and i could use the fresh air.” you spoke boredly, nervously gripping the straps on your backpack. your two best friends only nodded, and bid you a goodbye as they made their way to wilbur’s car. you huffed, closing your locker and heading in the other direction once they were out of sight.

you knew they weren’t stupid. they had to know something was up by now. you wanted to tell them everything; but he asked you not to. you wanted to tell wilbur and niki so badly about him, but the overwhelming need to please your boyfriend overpowered your own desire. for awhile, anyways. now you were starting to feel the drift in your friendship, and you were tired.

you arrived at the bleachers, seeing his broad frame anxiously awaiting your arrival. sapnap’s eyes beamed as he saw you approaching, opening his arms for a hug. you walked into his arms, but very half-heartedly reciprocated the hug. he pulled away, frowning.

“what’s wrong?” he asked, gently placing his hands on your shoulders, holding you in place as his eyes darted around your face in search of something wrong. you only shrugged his hands off, turning your back to him. sapnap knew something was very, very wrong by now. you usually basked in the short amount of time the two of you shared under the bleachers.

“y/n, you’re scaring me.” he whispered, and you sighed, crossing your arms and rubbing them comfortingly, reassuring yourself. you turned back around, now a decent distance set between you and your lover.

“i don’t know how much more of this i can take, sap.” you breathed, and his expression dropped immediately. he opened his mouth to speak, but you shook your head, silencing him. “this, us. it’s ruining me. you spend every waking minute of the day throwing things at me, breaking my stuff. then we come here for 10 short minutes every day to kiss, and then you leave again!”

“i’m trying to make this work-” he tried, but you once again, cut him off. you weren’t finished.

“no, you’re not! you won’t even let me tell my two closest friends - who, by the way, i’m losing because of you! soon i’ll be left with nothing! this isn’t a healthy relationship sapnap, and i’m sick of it!” you were shouting now, and you watched as his eyes darted nervously around, hoping no one heard you. you scoffed.

“you care so much about your reputation you’re more worried about someone hearing me, than you yourself hearing what i’m saying.” you stepped back then, desperately trying to fight the tears threatening to spill from your eyes. sapnap noticed, gulping harshly; he too was fighting tears.

“that’s not true, and you know it. i love you!” he choked, taking a step forward, and you shook your head softly, taking another step back.

“do you?” your voice cracked, and the two simple words broke both your hearts. you glanced at his face, only to force yourself to look away. you had never seen him so broken, and it was your fault. no. it was his fault, he did this to you both. without another word, you turned, leaving the heartbroken boy you loved so much, crying under the bleachers alone.

sapnap stood in pure shock as you left, a sickening feeling rising in his chest as the weight of your words hit him like a truck. you thought he didn’t love you. he sunk to the ground, silent sobs wracking his body. he didn’t once think about the fact football practice was starting, and that he was going to miss it. he didn’t care about that - he cared about you.

he wasn’t sure how long he sat under those bleachers, replaying every memory the two of you shared, trying to figure out where he went wrong. maybe it was the time someone almost caught the two of you making out under the seats, and he pushed you to the ground without a second thought, switching back to his typical bully persona. maybe it was the multiple times he promised he’d take you out for a real date, and never really did.

it wasn’t. he knew the real reason why you were upset.

the two of you laid in the grass under the bleachers, you simply resting your head on his shoulder as you talked about anything and everything. this was your first rendezvous in your newly declared ‘spot’, it was exciting and romantic all at once.

“hey, y/n?” sapnap called, and with a hum in response from you, continued. “can we, you know, keep this between us for now?” he asked, sheepishly. he’d just been personally accepted as dream’s right hand man, and was trying to perfect his image in this shitty school hierarchy. you never cared about it, but you knew he did. “it’s not because of you, it’s just-”

“of course, you don’t need to explain. i understand.” you smiled, and he relaxed, visibly. “just maybe not forever?” you added, hopefully. he smiled brightly, nodding quickly.

“i couldn’t keep you a secret forever, angel. in fact, i can’t wait to show you off to the whole school, and let them know you’re mine.” his words were like music to your ears, and you kissed him passionately, taking him completely off guard. the two of you pulled away laughing, simply enjoying each other's presence.

that was one of sapnap’s favourite memories of the two of you. ever since that day, tradition was to meet under the bleachers after school whenever possible. the visits became less and less frequent however, with dream demanding more practices and after-school hangouts. 4 months later, sapnap still hadn’t brought you up to anyone, and now as he pondered his relationship, realized he also neglected you.

determination flooded him, and he stood. he wasn’t going to let your relationship end like this, not without a fight. he quickly ran to the locker room, finding dream addressing some future tactics with punz. “dream!” sapnap called, and everyone’s attention flicked to him, some sending him worried glances.

“you missed practice.” dream’s voice cut through the silence, anger leaking from his tone. his eyes met sapnap’s, however, and softened immediately at the pain visible in his eyes. “okay guys, dismissed. get out of here.” dream announced, and the team whooped and hollered as they filed out of the locker room. soon, it was just the two boys standing in silence.

“you gonna tell me why you’ve been crying?” dream asked, a somewhat teasing tone attempting to mask the real concern he felt for the boy. sapnap was like a younger brother to him, he hated seeing him this way.

“i-have-a-significant-other.” sapnap rushed, and dream gave him a confused look. sapnap sighed, wringing his fingers nervously. “i, uh, sort of.. maybe have a significant other?” he muttered, and dream blinked, suddenly let out a loud laugh. sapnap flushed, embarrassed as dream began laughing uncontrollably, hunched over as wheezes slipped past his lips. tears welled up in sapnap’s eyes again, muttering a small “nevermind” as he turned to leave.

“no- no wait.” dream wheezed, desperately trying to collect himself. “sorry, sorry it's just - yeah. y/n. what about them?” he managed, breathing heavily after his intense fit of laughter. sapnap froze, turning back to dream.

“what did you just say?” sapnap asked, and dream chuckled, much more calm this time.

“y/n? the super smart kid you’ve been teasing nonstop for the entire year? yeah, george and i have known for a while. you’re not exactly subtle, sapnap.” dream explained, and sapnap flushed.

“what.. why didn’t you say anything then?” sapnap exclaimed, panic settling in. he’d put you through so much pain to keep this from dream, when he’d known all along?

“you didn’t ever mention them, we figured you would tell us when you felt ready.” dream shrugged, taking a swig from his water bottle. sapnap smiled a bit at this, but let out a heavy sigh.

“i really fucked up with them, dream. i don’t know what to do.” sapnap admitted, and he explained the situation to him in detail. dream listened intently, frowning as he came to a realization.

“sap, you.. you didn’t do this because you thought i’d stop being friends with you, did you?” he asked, hesitantly. sapnap didn’t answer, only dropping his gaze to the floor in response. dream sighed, bringing the younger male into a hug. sapnap startled, but clung to the boy desperately. “don’t worry, we’ll fix this.” dream muttered, and smirked as a plan started to form in his head. “i have an idea.”

the next morning, you arrived at school looking nothing short of a mess. you tried to hide the redness of your eyes, and failed miserably. hence why when half the school looked at you as you walked sluggishly to your locker, you thought nothing of it. you simply kept your head down and only lifted it when reaching your destination. instead of the regular brown metal however, your locker had sapnap’s jersey pinned to it.

you blinked, flushing as you realized everyone’s eyes were on you not because you looked like you’d been to hell and back, but because of this. you swallowed, swiftly pulling the jersey off of your locker and holding it in your hands, staring at it in wonder.

“i was hoping you’d wear it to our game friday night.” his voice cut through the buzzing chatter of students crystal clear, and you slowly turned to see sapnap standing with your favourite drink in hand, offering it to you sheepishly.

“what the- what are you doing?” you whispered, completely overwhelmed by the gestures being thrown your way. sapnap sighed, swallowing thickly.

“i’ve been a horrible boyfriend, y/n. you deserve so much better than what i’ve been treating you - and you’re right. it wasn’t fair of me to ask you to lie to your friends, or to hide under the bleachers. none of it was okay. i wasn’t lying yesterday. i want to make this work - i love you. if you’ll give me another chance, i’ll do better. i’ll be better. if you don’t want to though, i understand-” he rambled, and more tears welled up in your eyes.

“shut up and let me talk..” you cut him off, and he shut his mouth instantly. “no one has ever done anything like this for me. i love you too, sapnap. of course i’ll give you another chance.” you smiled, pulling him into a passionate kiss. claps and cheers echoed around you, and you pulled away, laughing at the situation in front of you.

suddenly, the football team came and clapped sapnap on the back, a chorus of “simpnap!” cheers following. he pouted, but you only shrugged, showing off the jersey in your hands. he sighed, accepting defeat. “only for you.” he whispered to you, and you smiled impossibly brighter.

the first warning bell went off, students left and right quickly scrambling away from the scene, and you followed suit, gently folding the jersey and placing it in your locker. “so? will you wear it to the game on friday?” sapnap asked, and you almost jumped - you’d figured he’d left with the crowd.

you pretended to think about it, seeing another adorable pout adorn sapnap’s expression. “on one condition.” you claimed, and sapnap looked at you expectantly. beckoning him closer with a finger, you leaned up to his ear, your voice barely a whisper. “meet me under the bleachers after class?”

flirt [sapnap]

pairing: sapnap x gn!reader

pronouns: they/them (none mentioned)

synopsis: “did you just use a pick-up line on me?” “is it working?”

wc: 1.8k

a/n: here's my piece for @scare-crowed's 600 event! congratulations again <3 (also i got very carried away, sorry not sorry!!

tw: cursing, relentless flirting

sapnap was one of the most flirtatious people you’d ever met.

it didn’t matter who you were. his best friend, a friend of a friend, or someone he hardly knew. he was unrelenting, constantly trying to catch his peers off guard and ultimately, get them flustered.

you simply happened to be one of his many victims.

the thing about sapnap was that he was fueled by reaction. he seeked validation, thrived off of the embarrassment of those he held closest to him. it was his own little game, and he always won.

that is, until he met you.

see, when you’d first met sapnap, you mistook his flirtatious nature for someone with an overly-large ego. (in your defence, sometimes it’s hard to read people through a screen.) because you weren’t too fond of cocky attitudes, when sapnap’s playful flirting was directed towards you, you shut him down. every single time.

sapnap was used to retaliation from anyone, so when you wouldn’t reciprocate, it threw him for a loop and left him in stunned silence. he wasn’t sure he’d ever been picked on more after a joke of his went poorly. his competitive nature wasn’t having it, and a new mission was formed. he would flirt with you until you responded, he needed it. just once.

you picked up on his motives fairly quickly as your friendship progressed, and the two of you grew closer. your actions were no longer spiteful of him, but you knew how badly he wanted to elicit a response from you, so as the amazing friend you were, you refused to give it to him. it was your game now, and you both knew it.

“hey cutie” he greeted, as soon as he noticed you had joined the discord call. you rolled your eyes dramatically, despite him not being able to see you.

“g’morning guys.” you instead replied, greeting the group as a whole.

“y/n!” sapnap whined, making the group burst into a fit of laughter. they too had picked up on your mischievous plan, and they lived for the blatant rejection sapnap faced every time you spoke. you didn’t like to think of it as rejection, since everything between the two of you was mainly playful and strictly platonic, but the boys had their hearts set on calling it so.

the irony of it is that had it been real, you wouldn’t have rejected him.

sapnap was competitive as hell, and so he was willing to do anything to make you break. send you cheesy pickup lines over text, compliment the hell out of you when you had facecam on, or just call you at random times of the day to talk with you, adding flirtatious comments here and there.

though at first it was slightly annoying, at some point (you weren’t really sure when), the feeling of annoyance shifted into something else. something like endearment.

you’d smile when you saw his name illuminate your phone screen. you felt heat rise to your cheeks when he’d call you pet names. you anticipated any sort of communication from him.

you grew to love the attention.

if you were being honest with yourself, you grew to love the attention from him.

you had long since fallen for your overly flirtatious friend, and it was going to be the death of you.

sapnap had been growing impatient, and recently had taken to flirting with you on stream way more than usual. if you thought the shipping between you was bad enough, that stream amplified the comments tenfold. every social media you had was flooded with mentions about you and sapnap’s supposed secret relationship.

you pretended to be mad at him after, but you knew deep down you wanted it to be real so badly that you allowed yourself to indulge in the idea for a short while. and after that, you were simply embarrassed. you had your facecam on for that particular ‘chill’ stream, and you’d turned visibly flustered at his commentary - ending the stream abruptly.

in retrospect, that was probably the worst thing you could’ve done.

sapnap instantly checked up on you, asking if he had crossed a line and if you were okay. you assured him you were, and that you would still be on his stream later, as promised. you just needed to take a short break.

in reality, you weren’t all that upset - simply feeling like you needed to get back at sapnap for his little show in front of thousands of viewers. and you knew exactly what you needed to do. luckily for you, sapnap was doing his long awaited shock stream later that day, and he would have his facecam on. it was perfect.

you wasted away the day, finally sitting excitedly at your desk, prepared for the stream. you joined discord as sapnap was doing his intro, muted and deafened. you grinned mischievously. “hey guys.” you greeted dream, george and quackity, who sat quietly waiting for sapnap to be ready. “guess who’s gonna end the flirting game today.” you teased, and they gasped, excitedly.

“why today?” george asked, suspiciously. you laughed, shaking your head despite them not being able to see you.

“he embarrassed me in front of my stream. i’m simply going to return the favor.” you mentioned, casually. before they could comment however, sapnap undefeaned, introducing the chat to his guests and the stream began.

it was casual for a while, sapnap avoiding being zapped at all costs, and it was making for quite a boring stream for the viewers. naturally, as a guest, you were obliged to spice it up, right?

“you look good today, sapnap.” you commented, deciding to rile up the chat a bit. sapnap laughed lightheartedly, looking at himself in the camera lens and adjusting his hair.

“you think i look good, y/n?” he asked, teasingly. you sighed dramatically, ensuring your mic picked it up - you wanted him to believe this would be just another blow off to get the best reaction from him. watching his screen, he was currently exploring a cave with a few mobs surrounding him, not yet close enough to attack. he began mining some iron, not worrying about the monsters.

it was now or never.

“oh please baby, if you were words on a page, you’d be fine print.” you said nonchalantly, hearing a series of responses elicited from your friends. the guesting feral boys burst into laughs, while sapnap’s line fell quiet. you were glad you didn’t have a camera on you at that moment, struggling to hold it together and biting back a laugh.

“did you just use a pick-up line on me?” he asked, bluntly. his cheeks had turned a bright red colour, his mouth slightly agape in pure shock. dream’s wheeze cut through your headphones, followed by george and quackity’s loud laughter.

“well, that depends, is it working?” you asked, innocently. you watched the chat burst into excited messages, all spamming the ship name they collectively agreed on for the two of you. you saw tons of comments about his reddened cheeks as well, which made you smirk successfully.

sapnap opened his mouth to answer, but rather than a response, a scream echoed through the call. “what the hell!” he yelled in pain, instantly refocused on his game and the variety of mobs attacking him at once. “y/n!”

you finally joined in on the laughter, unable to breathe as you doubled over watching the poor boy struggle to regain control. his screams lasted another minute or so before he was breathing so heavily it was being picked up by his mic, and his chat was losing its mind.

“sorry, sap. you weren’t getting shocked enough for my liking. thought i’d kill two birds with one stone and shock you in more ways than one.” you said slyly, and he pouted, complaining to his chat about how rude you were. most of them agreed with you though, making him sigh in defeat.

another hour and many laughs later, sapnap finally managed to beat the game and ended his stream swiftly. you bid the group goodbye, no longer in the mood to be on live while the others were moving onto quackity’s stream.

it had been maybe ten minutes when your phone began to ring. you picked it up, not surprised to see a facetime request from sapnap. you answered, greeting him with a large smile. “hey, sapnap.”

“what was that?” he questioned, instantly. he didn’t seem angry, but he didn’t seem exactly happy either. you frowned, suddenly feeling a slight remorse.

“you embarrassed me on my stream, i wanted to repay the favor.” you said, quietly. he seemed to ponder this, running a hand over his face.

“that’s all?” he questioned, curiously. you blinked in confusion, trying to think of what he could possibly be implying.

“what do you mean? what else would it be?” you replied, tilting your head to the side to emphasize how lost you were.

“i was hoping- nevermind. you got me good.” he changed the subject, but you could see there was something else being his eyes. disappointment?

“hoping what? you know you can tell me anything.” you pressed, and he pulled his gaze away from you, seemingly very interested in whatever laid in front of him, out of your sight.

“it’s just, uh, what you said. is it working.. it sounded like a genuine question.” he mumbled, and you swallowed.

“did it?” you squeaked, all earlier confidence dissipated. confrontation was not a strong suit for you.

“yeah.” he breathed, finally looking at you once more. you were sure he could tell your sudden change in mood with a quick scan of your expression, and he took a deep breath. “was it? a genuine question, i mean.”

you paused, swallowing nervously before slowly shrugging. “if you want it to be one, it could be.” you looked intently at the floor, and heard him let out a small relieved sigh.

“i definitely want it to be one. and the answer is yes, it worked.” he muttered, and you looked at him through the screen once more, smiling upon seeing his cheeky smile returned once more. you two simply took in eachother’s appearances for a short while longer, before you chose to break the silence.

“so what now? what does this make us?” you questioned, and sapnap smirked.

“if you got pickup lines like that up your sleeve, i think that makes us the biggest pain-in-the-ass couple that annoys the hell out of our friends by constantly flirting.” you both laughed at that, and you smirked.

“couple huh?” you teased, and he only offered his impish grin, sliding his gaming chair back and dramatically bowing in front of the camera.

“will thou do me the honour of being my partner?” he asked in a british accent (one of the worst you think you’d ever heard, but you ignored that for now)

“it would be my pleasure, good sir.” you fired back cheekily, fake accent and all. he smiled brightly, and you couldn’t help but reciprocate his glowing expression.

it felt good to finally be able to banter with him, no longer having to suppress your cheeky comebacks.

and let’s just say, you simply couldn’t wait to embarrass him further in the future. especially if his chat was on your side.
