Weve Been Getting Pings And @s All Morning About Ebooks-tree.com Who Seem To Be Scraping/taking Stories

We’ve been getting pings and @’s all morning about ebooks-tree.com who seem to be scraping/taking stories off of AO3 and hosting them as PDFs and mobi downloads on their site; the site seems to be pulling from UrBookLibrary as well. They’re not reading your “do not copy/duplicate” notes on your AO3 fic; their bots are pulling things directly from AO3, without AO3′s authorization or assent. It looks like they are pulling from Wattpad too, again without authorization or assent.

While the Ebooks-Tree DMCA page seems to imply that you need a lawyer or other “authorized person” to submit a takedown notice, you don’t; you can do it yourself.

As we’ve posted before, fanfic writers hold copyright in their stories, although not in lines/quotes from the works they’ve been inspired by, and because of that, fanfic writers can submit DMCA takedown notices, or have someone do it on their behalf. While this post isn’t legal advice (none of our posts on FYC are), you might want to consider using this template (well, the bolded bits) in telling ebooks-tree to take down your content:

Your Name and/or Pseudonym as an e-signature (or the name of the person you’ve authorized to submit this request, with a slash before it and after it): Link(s) to the unauthorized works (link to the pdf, the mobi and the page hosting all of it):  Link(s) to an authorized version of your work (whether on AO3, tumblr, LJ or somewhere else):  An email address of the submitter (include it again even if it’s in the header):  This statement: I have good faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law. This statement: The information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that the complaining party is authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

That’s it - that’s all they need to know - you can submit all the info via http://www.ebooks-tree.com/info.php?contacts with DMCA Complaint in the subject; you may wish to submit the same content to Google via this page, or to BING via this page.

(Fwiw, even though they claim that they comply with the Copyright Act, they aren’t compliant with the DMCA Safe Harbor rules, as they aren’t listed on the copyright.gov list of agents.)

You can also submit a complaint about ebooks-tree to CloudFlare, who hosts the site. Their DMCA page is at https://www.cloudflare.com/abuse/form - as a matter of law you do not need to include the legal name of the copyright claimant/the fanfic writer, but  you should include the pseudonym that the fic was posted under if you don’t want to include a legal name or address.

Hi, my name is Holly, otherwise known as H.L. Holston. I’m a disabled Navy veteran. Six weeks ago, I found out I have to have major surgery to correct an issue which has caused kidney damage. The operation is scheduled for June 29th at my local VA Hospital. The doctor says my recovery will be anywhere from 4-6 weeks, of which I will be out of work. Since I am an ‘independent contractor’ with my job (I tutor reading/writing to special needs children), I do not qualify for short term disability. So, the entire time I’m off work, I won’t be paid. For the first two weeks I will not be very mobile, which is an issue as I have a service dog. My German Shepherd Mix named Cinnamon. I don’t have any close by friends in Orlando. My elderly mother cannot walk Cinnamon on a daily basis, so while I am recovering I’m going to have to hire a professional dog walker to take her out a minimum of twice a day. I’ve gotten estimates from two different people and it ranges from $25-30 a day (which is two 30-minute walks a day). At the moment because of how sick I’ve been prior to the surgery, my employer reduced my hours to next to nothing, so I don’t have the necessary funds to pay for Cinnamon’s care myself, so I’m asking for help. My dog was assigned to me for my disability, so I do need her here while I recover, which is why she’s not going to a family member or a kennel.

*Any additional funds raised over the amount will be used to pay for Cinnamon’s dog flu vaccination (there were 13 recorded cases in FL), which I couldn’t afford because of the impending surgery when I renewed her shots last week. Thank you again.

Abandoned Bunny

I’m purging! I'm moving this puppy out of my Projects In Process folder and into Abandoned. Posting for anyone interested or who might find it inspirational. I still like the basic idea, but I won't write it. Steve had patched up his strained relationship with his sister Mary, but they still spoke only occasionally on the weekends, so an email from her in the middle of a work day followed immediately by her phone number appearing on his cell raised a flag of alarm in his brain. Clicking open the email with his right, he answered his cell with his left. "Hi Mare." "Steve, thank god you're there." Her frantic tone and the picture on his screen both signaled danger. "It's going to be okay, Mare. Just don't panic. Look calm." Even as he spoke, he forwarded the email to the team's computer table, and stood up from his desk, leaving his office. "Oh my god, you know that guy. I can tell you do. He's been stalking me. Why is he stalking me?" "Are you sure he's been following you?" His team was already gathering around the table, no doubt in response to his body language and facial expression. Steve set the phone on the table's edge, hitting the speaker button, so everyone could hear the conversation. "It's been over a day, Steven. I'm a cop's daughter too. I know when I'm being stalked." At least worry was giving way to exasperation, which was good. He needed Mary calm and using her brain. Chin was pulling at the picture she'd sent, making it larger, and Steve tapped on the figure of Reese among the people on the New York sidewalk. Reese hadn't changed much since Steve last saw him. They were the same height, but Reese's hair was darker, the silver at his temples showing clearly that he was close to a decade older than Steve. Even among military personnel, he'd always had the look of a predator, but his features seemed even sharper now, almost gaunt. "His name is John Reese and he's Special Forces," he said, half to Mary but mostly to Chin, who immediately accessed the military database. "Special Forces? You're the one who's military, not me." Mary sounded peevish now, and Steve hoped she didn't get so irritated she stormed up to Reese and slapped him. He wouldn't put it past her. Chin shook his head as Reese's file unfolded on the screen. He was no longer military, which was not good. Why would a free-lancer, probably a mercenary, be interested in Mary? "Mary, where are you?" "I'm at a Starbuck's." "That's good. I want you to stay there, in full view of other people." He ran contacts through his head, trying to think who would be in New York and could both collect and protect his sister. "I don't mean your sister any harm, Commander," Reese said, breaking into their conversation without any noises or clicks to indicate a wire tap. "Quite the contrary." "You're there to protect her," Steve said, keeping the cynicism out of his voice, acting like he believed Reese. Undoubtedly Reese was quite capable of protecting someone, but it wasn't his normal mode of operation. "Your sister has been identified as potentially being involved in a situation I'm investigating." "What unit are you with now?" "You know I don't work for the military any longer. Let's not play games with each other, Commander. I'm involved with a private business that believes in taking proactive steps to eliminate possible threats against individuals." "And Mary is in danger? What kind of danger and from whom?" "We don't have any specifics yet, only a source that indicates that she may be at risk. But not from me," he added emphatically, and Steve believed him. Reese was fully capable of lying – they both were – but if he'd really wanted Mary dead, she'd never have had the chance to take his picture. "I believe you." His team members gave him quizzical looks, but they didn't know Reese like Steve did. "How can we help you?" "By reassuring your sister to go about her business and ignore me." "My business is being a tourist, you jackass, not to be stalked through New York." "Mary," Steve said sharply, then gentled his voice and repeated, "Mary." "Crap, you're going to tell me to do what he says, aren't you?" "I trust Reese, Mary. You'll be fine with him looking after you." "You've always been a really annoying older brother, you know that, right Steve?" "I love you too, Mary," he answered, barely getting in the words before she hung up. "Seriously?" Danny asked, spreading his hands wide in confusion. "Someone you barely know who used to kill people for a living thinks your sister is in danger and that's all you're going to do? Tell her to ignore him?" "No, I'm going to New York as soon as I can get a flight. I'll help Reese with his investigation whether he wants it or not." "Good." Danny clapped his hands together. "You take Reese, I'll stay with Mary." Steve thought about arguing, but gave up the idea quickly. It would waste valuable time and he didn't expect to win. Truthfully, he'd be reassured to have Danny in the city with him, even if he wasn't directly watching his back. Reese looked like he was still a lone wolf, but Steve had always preferred to the support of a team. "I'll get you guys plane reservations," Kono offered, using one side of the table to tap on airline websites. "I'll email them to your phones." "Thanks, Kono. Chin - " "Everything about Reese and who he might be working for, to your phones as soon as I find it," Chin promised. "Thank you," he said to both of them, before he and Danny headed to the door, on their way to New York and his sister. ~~~ In New York, Reese watched as Mary McGarrett shot him a filthy look as she left the Starbuck's, dropping her used cup in a garbage can and storming down the street in the opposite direction from him. He touched Finch's name on his cell, knowing he needed to alert his boss that Steve McGarrett would be on his way. "Finch, we have a complication." Why would Mary have been identified by the Machine? What danger would she be in, and how would John, Harold, Steve, and Danny rescue her? (I assumed she would not be a perpetrator, but who knows with Mary?) Would Steve and Danny already be a couple or become one during the story? How about John and Harold? How did Steve and John know each other? These were elements I contemplated but never settled before getting distracted, and now Person of Interest is over, I became dissatisfied with it, and I would not try to write a long, plotty story in that universe. If anyone would like to take up the beginning and run with it, please do so! I'd appreciate knowing where to find any story someone might finish.

If you support Planned Parenthood

And you’ve been looking to donate, please consider also donating to the PP Action Fund.

https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org

This is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood. It’s what keeps them talking to politicians and aiding their fight for survival in a legal sense. This is their best defense against anti-abortion/antiPP lobbying groups. They are not allowed to use money donated to PP for lobbying purposes. So 40 times the usual number of donations isn’t gonna be helpful if there’s no longer a PP to donate to. Money alone won’t save them. I chatted with a PP rep at the Women’s March about this. This is definitely something they need, but few are aware of.

Lawyers cost money, folks. Help them fund their own advocacy.
