I'm amused by "Considering the cult audience that has grown up around the children's series Dr. Who" and "But science fiction is potentially a very promising television genre, and as the B.B.C. are plainly willing to spend money on it, it would be a pity if the opportunity were squandered on adults equivalents to Dr. Who." Lol, how about squandering money on Dr. Who itself and all its adult fans? From the London Times, November 6, 1965, page 12.

So yeah, back in ancient days, when I was a Doctor Who-obsessed college student and the library contained microfiches of many newspapers (do they still?), I researched in spare moments. Recently I found a whole binder of articles I printed and labeled, and possibly these are all online somewhere but yes, I'm gonna share on Tumblr because I can't just toss it all into the recycle bin after it's set in my bookcases for more than 30 years.
So the earliest mention of Doctor Who I found, "A new family series, "Dr. Who", which borders on science fiction, will be screened on Saturday," etc. From the London Times, September 13, 1963, page 6c. Considering that DW was supposed to be primarily a history series, that description seems odd (though ultimately appropriate).
Reblog and put your rare pair in the tags/comments! I want to see the depths people will go to create, for the most random two characters in the most obscure media.
DYAD #20
Does anyone have a copy of the slash zine DYAD #20, published in 2000? I cannot locate my contributor's copy and I no longer have the text file of the story I had in that 'zine. I'd love to put it online, if anyone can send me scans or screenshots of just my story ("Jericho").

Got this deck of cards for donating to AO3, so cool!
My only question, one of the cards was G&N, does anyone know what that stands for? A search on AO3 as an additional tag came up empty!

TOMORROW (January 14th): Panel Suggestion Party!
Escapade has extended the panel suggestion deadline to January 14th. Not sure what to suggest? Come and join the Panel Suggestion Party!
WHAT: Join nev and the gang and we'll help you brainstorm and submit the panel(s) of your dreams.
WHEN: Sunday, January 14th at 5pm Pacific (What time is that for me?)
WHERE: The year-round Escapade Discord in the Escapade Discord voice chat (the Atrium).
WHY: Because creating panels—and the convention—is more fun if it's a party! If you have panel ideas you haven't submitted, bring them. If you want to submit panel suggestions but don't feel like your ideas are convention-ready, bring them. We can work together to add some truly special panels that wouldn't be there without you at the party!
Talk about a chorus...I must include the Pick-A-Little song from The Music Man, where the old biddies discuss Marion the Librarian's backstory and their opinion of her. (Newsflash: It ain't good!)
So we've all heard of the "I Want Song" genre in musicals.
But what about the "Let's talk about the bitch behind their back like they're not in the room" song, or "singing s*** behing a bitche's back". There's a surprising amount of them.

"Belle" from Beauty and the Beast

"Scrooge" from Muppet Christmas Carol

"Maria" from The Sound of Music

"Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee" from Grease

"You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" from How The Grinch Stole Christmas

"Jackass In a Can" from Galavant

"Phony King of England" from Robin Hood

"Stepsister's Lament" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella

"Non-Stop" from Hamilton
And, of course, the man, the myth, the legend...

"We Don't Talk About Bruno" from Encanto
You can learn a lot about a character and story from what they sing versus what other people sing about them.

The AO3 Demographics Survey 2024 has arrived!
This project is an independent survey (not affiliated with AO3) which seeks to research the demographics and behaviours of AO3 users. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete, will be open until 1 February, and can be found at https://forms.gle/2kt5J17ipzcAbnFY9
We are hoping to survey as large a group of users as possible, so we really appreciate anyone who shares the survey, whether by reblogging this post or sharing posts on other social media.
If you have any questions for us, we have FAQs on Tumblr or on AO3 which will be updated as the project progresses. And of course, you can follow us on Tumblr or AO3 if you want to see the survey results!

I looked at this little guy (who I copied from somewhere and I no longer know where) and thought about mistletoe stories but how would a toad get the mistletoe? And thought… it should be Sam, wandering out on the bayou, and there’s a toad, and maybe Sam is a little drunk and talks to the toad about his life, and at some point he goes to brush off his shoulder and realizes that there’s a piece of mistletoe on it (maybe he was helping his sister make mistletoe sprigs for the party he wandered away from?), so he laughs, and says what the heck, and kisses the toad, and it turns into Bucky! Who obviously is a prince who has been put under a spell that Sam has now broken.
That’s not really a mistle-toad, that’s a toad under the mistletoe, but it amused me. And it is Christmas, so best wishes on a lovely holiday.
Merry Christmas!

My baby kitty likes to loaf nicely under the tree, but mostly she prefers to yank the skirt out of place. It is the best toy!
Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!
DEVILED EGGS, PEOPLE. HOW CAN YOU HAVE A POLL ABOUT MIDWESTERN FOOD WITHOUT DEVILED EGGS????
Inspired by a certain Midwestern delicacy apparently going viral:

On World AIDS Day, I remember my aunt Billie June and my cousin Roy. Technically my cousin died of starvation after he decided he couldn't cope any longer with several years of AIDS symptoms, and she died of a stroke from grief, but it was AIDS killed them. I love and miss both of them.
Obviously, in a fair fight, Bucky Barnes would take Bob Hogan any day. But (1) Hogan outranks Barnes, and (2) he's a mastermind/schemer. Hogan can run rings around the Nazis at a prisoner of war camp every week, he'd find a way to triumph over Barnes. Or more likely he'd order him to stand down and go to the pub with him, where they'd slam back good beer and Hogan would tell Barnes how much he admired the Howling Commandos, and reveal his own exploits in making Nazis look like fools, and then Barnes would fangirl him. It'd be a total love-fest of hot, brunette, WWII soldiers, and I would be so down for that, where is a crossover?!?
1. Yes they have to fight, 2. Tell me who’s fighting who in the tags! (I’ll add the most ridiculous combos in a reblog)

Happy Thanksgiving! I can't take credit for this meme, but I love you even more if you get it. :-)

Tea Time - (2023)
Taking care of a Flerken on an everyday basis isn't an easy task. 😶
managing creative envy
Just like in other areas of our lives, it's easy to be jealous of others when we create in fandom spaces and post online - the online aspect of fandom just offers more opportunities for it. Hits, kudos, comments, reblogs. Whatever unit of measurement you look at, there's always some number out there ready to tell you who's "better" and who's "worse" at whatever creative endeavor you engage in.
Except that none of those numbers actually gauge skill or quality.
When we're jealous of those numbers, what we actually wish we had isn't bigger numbers, it's attention. Reassurance. Excitement. Community. Whether the number is 5 or 5000, that's what it represents. We want those things and that other person has more of them, and so we end up jealous.
To manage that jealousy, we need to understand what we need and then find ways to get it. It might not come from posting on AO3, but maybe it comes from a local writer's group. Maybe there's someone in your life that you wish cared a little more about your "silly stories" and took you more seriously when you spoke about writing. Maybe what's missing isn't related to writing at all and it's more about having someone who cares about you and thinks you're important.
But numbers are just one thing to be jealous of. Perhaps the envy is instead because of another person's abilities. They come up with such interest plots! They have such fun ideas! They always have the perfect words, the singing phrases. For them it's easy, and for me it's just impossible!
Whether it's easy for them or not isn't what's making us envious, though. It's not about them and their abilities at all. It's about feeling like our own skills are lacking. The envy comes in because that person has what we want and don't yet have.
If we want to get past this type of envy, we need to refocus our energy away from being sad or angry or hopeless because another person is able to do something. Focus instead on celebrating the things we already do well. Take the time to notice improvements. Identify specific things we want to do better, and figure out how to learn. Remember, asking for help is always an option - and it might even lead to that feeling of community that might be lacking too.
Emotions are information that we need to take the time to interpret. Take the time to reflect on what's causing it. Find the thing that's missing from your experience and then figure out how to fill the gap.
On October 21st my sister & I were out with friends at the movies watching Taylor Swift's Eras Tour when I got an alert on my phone that an alarm was going off at our apartment. We rushed home to find our apartment on fire.
My best friend's cat that we were sitting for passed away in the fire & our apartment complex decided to break our lease, so now we're couch surfing & scrambling to find a new place to live while all the stuff we could salvage sits in storage.
While we had some savings & renter's insurance, we do not have enough cushion to cover storage, moving, cleaning supplies & first, last, & security at a new apartment, along with cremation services for the cat.
I know times are tough for everyone in this economy, so if you can't help out I totally understand, if you can share this around maybe it can find someone that can. We appreciate any help anyone can give.
