Okay this may be a hot take because I’ve seen only like 2 or 3 other people say this too. But if you like Robert Lanyon as a person even after he said all those terrible things to Jekyll then please rethink your decision. Because Robert has said the most horrible things to Jekyll during their situationship in college that is inexcusable. I understand that they both talked through it eventually but that was like- what? 10+ years later?? Give or take. Just because Robert can’t properly communicate doesn’t mean that what he said is okay. What he said to Jekyll emotionally destroyed him. Especially because he told Jekyll all that IMMEDIATELY AFTER THEY FUCKED. Do you know how harmful that is?? To say that shit to someone after they were emotionally and sexually vulnerable with you??? I feel so fucking bad for Jekyll. Robert doesn’t deserve Jekyll in my option and no apology can excuse or fix the behavior Robert had. It was incredibly immature of Robert to say all of that and then go on to boo hoo that “oh heem heem now I don’t have a chance with Henry now I can’t continue to do this anymore heem heem”

Who in their right mind thinks it’s okay to say to a man you’ve JUST had sex with not even a minute ago “why would anyone give up all their future prospects for someone like you?”

Please explain to me why any of that is okay?? Or even maybe comparing their actions to playing house?? As if this was just a game to him.

And before anyone comes at me saying “oh well he’s changed, he’s gonna do better, he didn’t mean it” the fact he still SAID IT when he didn’t have to, says it all. The fact he still said it with no hesitation and broke Henry’s heart is still disgusting in my opinion. I will NEVER like Robert lanyon as a person. He’s an amazing character, but a really really shitty person who doesn’t deserve Henry Jekyll.

Maybe this is a stretch, but I think Edward Hyde is more tragic than Jekyll. Partly because anyone who read the novella will know Jekyll's a hypocritical bitch, but Hyde was created solely for the purpose of evil. He was never even given a chance to try and be a good person. And if he had, if he had tried he would be destined to fail anyway, because that's what Jekyll made him for. And because this is the purpose he was created for, no one around him gives him a chance either. Everyone who meets Hyde assumes he's a terrible person, without knowing him. And I know that's one of the Victorian beliefs; your outward appearance is affected by your sins, but given that one of Stevenson's messages is that appearances are deceiving... I do wonder how Hyde could be if he hadn't been designed for the very purpose of evil. And I know, that he is still Jekyll, but if Jekyll is allowed to separate himself from Hyde in his confession, I'm allowed to do it too.
