The World-Ending Threats Are Easier in Fantasy
I talked with a friend about this last night and I thought I could share this with you. We talked about Baldur's Gate and DnD campaigns, as well as fantasy in general and the tendency of a lot of fantasy to deal with world ending threats. And I thought I would share, because it is an interesting topic.
Spoilers for Baldur's Gate 3
In a lot of fantasy stories there are potential world ending threats. Sure, often enough the world is not literally gonna end, but it would cease to be the same world we know it to be. In Baldur's Gate 3 the villains basically plan for world domination. Or at least Sword Coast domination. But it is bad enough I would argue. Which is why in a good playthrough you got to stop them at all costs. So, in the end you defeat them, one by one. And then you go up to the big evil netherbrain and you kill that thing, too, after which the world is gonna be saved once more.
And themes like this are fairly common in fantasy. How many fantasy stories do you know in which the bad guy wants to rule over the world or reshape it entirely. Sure, it is fairly rare that the villain outright wants to destroy it - that is usually only something that "force of nature" villains want to do - but the fate of the world is kinda always on the line and of course the world tends to be saved by our fearless heroes.
For the longest time this went so far into that power fantasy aspect of it, that we never actually did consider how it would feal for those fearless heroes to have the fate of the world on their shoulders. Only fairly recently fantasy has turned more to dealing with the trauma our heroes would face during their quest to save the world, while having to kill and seeing their friends killed. In fact we are so used to heroes being impervious to trauma, that there are still a lot of people who will get very cranky when presented with a fantasy world where trauma does actually affect the heroes. (I just will remind you of how angry the nerds became to see traumatized Luke in The Last Jedi.)
But even so... the fantasy apocalypse is a lot nicer than the real world apocalypse, isn't it?
I mean that seriously. Because especially our younger generations do not know a world before the apocalypse. I am a millenial and I fairly well remember that moment when I was just 16 and realized how fucked the world was. Like, literally, I remember the exact day and time at which I realized that climate change was real and was going to fuck us all over. But at least I do remember a time before that. I do remember having normal winters and mild summers. Gen Z often doesn't.
And here is the thing: The real world apocalypse is not as easy to stop as the fantasy apocalypse. In the fantasy apocalypse it is fairly easy to stop it. Sure, the questline might be convoluted, but in the end it is "destroy magical item in vulcano" or "blow this one bad guy up". Once the main baddy has been defeated usually their troops will just give up - or remember they had better things to do.
But this doesn't really work in the real world. I cannot just go, assassinate Netanjahu and stop the genocide of Palestinians. And I cannot just take some magical item, throw it into mount Etna and stop climate change. And I also cannot throw Elon Musk into a portal and stop capitalism like that.
And sure, I do not have to deal with goblins, dragons, orks at the same time. Great. But... Like... We are all still getting traumatized, right? Like, we all get traumatized and especially between marginalized left-wing folks I do not know a lot of people who did not witness at least one violent encounter with evil goons (police).
And we are all traumatized. Losing a house in a wildfire is traumatizing. Seeing loved ones die of a pandemic the politicians are not taking seriously is traumatizing. Being in constant survival mode because you are too poor for anything else, is traumatizing as well. Most current workplaces are also traumatizing in their own little ways. School is traumatizing for so many of us. We are all getting traumatized by the world being fucked up.
To be perfectly honest with you: I would rather pick up a fight with a dragon, a netherbrain or whatever. Because a dragon or a netherbrain at least gives me something concrete to do. Because a dragon I can slay. Capitalism I can't. No matter how much I protest, I cannot kill capitalism - and I cannot stop climate change. And even if we did a revolution... It might work, yes, but really... slaying a dragon would be so much easier.
This is of course the entire function of fantasy as escapism. Because fantasy allows us a world where the end might be stopped fairly easy. When I DM a DnD campaign and let my players stop the end of the world, it is so we all can have the catharthis of this ending.
I just... wished that the real world would make it a bit easier.
Sorry for rambling. But yeah, it was something we talked about yesterday and I thought I might share.

The pouring rain outside has been the source of calmness for you. You’ve always loved the rain, the thundering clap of thunders, and the violent winds. It’s calming for you. As the rain cascaded down your bedroom window, you’re getting ready for the urgent meeting your father has arranged for tonight.
He’s never arranged a meeting this late, you somberly thought. Knocks were heard from your door.
“Come out now, darling. Everyone’s waiting.” It’s your father.
“Coming!” You glanced one final look at your vanity mirror and stood up to shake off your dress. Walking towards the door, you sighed and couldn’t help but feel a pang of apprehension. This is nerve-wracking.
You opened the door to find your father waiting for you. He never fails to give off his presence which commands respect, authority, and intimidation.
Even in the privacy of your own home. His eyes softened by the slightest hint of weariness when he looked at you. His tall and imposing figure still left no room for doubt of power. He’s wearing his most expensive tailored suit, impeccably pressed despite the late hour. He has to, being the family boss of the clan. And you know this suit, you had it made for him as a gift for his 70th birthday. This made you smile a bit while looking down.
“Let’s go.” He called with his voice carrying a note of urgency. Definitely matches the severity of the storm outside.
You nodded in response, steeling yourself for the impending meeting just beyond the corridor. Despite the facade of the intimidating and powerful aura he projected, there was the weight of responsibility that burdened him. You know it all too well.
The unspoken sacrifices he made for the sake of his family and clan. Yet, you never felt who is his family. With the way things are and have been, all he did shaped your upbringing and eventually molded you into the formidable woman you had become.
With a deep breath, you followed him down the dimly lit corridor. Tumultuous thoughts swirled in your mind but everything’s getting rained down thanks to the comforting sound outside.
—
Walking into the room, you saw everyone important in the clan. From your father to his assistant and lieutenants, with you as the only woman in the room. This meeting must be of utmost importance if all key figures of the clan are here.
As your father walked towards his seat at the head of the table, you couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and nervousness. The tables are laid out with expensive tea cups and teapots for everyone. As your father sat down, your heartbeat quickened with the room growing quiet around you. You find yourself seated next to him at a reasonable distance, being just the one and only daughter of the boss.
Your father’s presence commanded respect, with his assistant and lieutenants expressing a mix of deference and readiness to hear whatever he had to say.
Scanning the room, you caught the eye of your father’s most trusted person, Sukuna. His right-hand man. The one who always does his bidding, from the legal side to the dirty side of everything.
Sukuna always looks imposing with his piercing gaze and confident, intimidating demeanor. He’s scarier than father. His face tattoos compliment his tousled pink hair, which by the way makes him look sexier than ever. He’s wearing a white button-up with rolled-up sleeves, accentuating his muscles and some of his tattoos peeking through.
You’ve always had a secret attraction towards him. The secret glances every time he’s in a room with you. The fucking pterodactyls with their intense fluttering in your stomach. Feeling your gaze upon him, he looked towards you with a smirk which made you shift your eyes toward your father as he began to talk.
“I’ve called you all for an important matter that needs urgent attention.” Hearing this made your heart pound with a tingling sensation to fidget your fingers, below the eyes of everyone but you.
“It’s time for a new era.” Your father declared. “And I have chosen Sukuna to lead us into it.”
As your father’s words hung heavy in the air, a wave of shock rippled through the room, followed by the hushed silence and just the sound of rain. Suddenly, the rain doesn’t feel as calm anymore. It feels suffocating and unsettling. This is not the calm you’ve always loved.
What's more, you can’t believe everything your father just said. He’s chosen Sukuna to lead the clan into a new era. He passed over you, his own daughter, for the family succession.
A swarm of emotions swirled in your mind — disbelief, doubt, confusion, shock, anger, and a bitter sense of betrayal. How could your father overlook you, his direct heir, in favor of Sukuna? You furrow your eyebrows as you continue to process this news.
Across the room, Sukuna stood up from his seat with a calm demeanor and a tattooed smirk on his face that spoke volumes. He looked at everyone with intensity and his eyes gleamed with triumph, ending up meeting your gaze that sent a shiver down your spine.
As everyone processed this new change, all key figures gave their respect and support to Sukuna. Amid the collective acknowledgment, you felt a profound sense of betrayal by your own father. Your dreams, the cornerstone of your existence crumbled like fragile glass under the weight of this revelation.
From the fluttering pterodactyls in your stomach, a tide of anger surged through your veins, drowning out any semblance of affection towards Sukuna. And your deepest regards to your father, once a sturdy pillar of respect and trust, crumbled like ancient ruins replaced by a bitter taste of betrayal, doubt, and hurt.
Sukuna walked towards your father, who welcomed him with a tight hug. And as the storm raged outside, so did the storm within your heart.
Your father continued to speak, outlining his reasons why he chose Sukuna. You can’t hear anything anymore. The thundering claps and violent rain drown out everything. The room seemed to spin around you, the expensive tea cups and teapots on the table, all the lieutenants, your father, and Sukuna blurred into a haze as you grappled with what was happening.
This couldn’t be real.
—
As you retreated to the solace of your room, the events of this night continued to replay in your mind like a broken record. The fake smiles, the hollow congratulations, the sense of betrayal that hung heavy in the air – it was all too much to bear.
With trembling hands, you reached for the bottle of champagne you grabbed from the pantry earlier, the cool glass offering a welcome respite from the storm raging both outside and within. You walked towards your bathroom with the bottle.
Standing before the mirror, your reflection seemed to mock the turmoil raging within you. As you stared into your own eyes, the facade of composure you had worn for so long began to crumble, revealing the raw emotions simmering beneath the surface.
At that moment, you made a choice — to reject the false comforts of that alcohol or face the harsh reality of your situation head-on. With a determined flick of your wrist, you poured the champagne down the drain, soullessly watching the golden liquid disappear.
The weight of expectation had always rested heavily on your shoulders, a burden you bore with a mixture of pride and determination. As the family boss's only daughter, you had been groomed from a young age to inherit the mantle of leadership, carry on the legacy of your forefathers, and guide the family into a new era.
Your father had promised you that one day you would lead the family, that you would shatter the traditions that had long relegated women to the sidelines of power and influence. It was a dream he had instilled in you from the moment you were old enough to understand, a promise that had fueled your ambition and shaped your identity.
You had immersed yourself in every aspect of the family business, from the legal intricacies of corporate dealings to the ruthless strategies of the underworld. You had learned to navigate the murky waters of power and politics, to command respect and fear in equal measure.
But now, as you stood on the precipice of your destiny, that dream lay shattered at your feet. Your father's decision to pass over you in favor of Sukuna had blindsided you.
You couldn't understand how he could break his promise, how he could deny you the opportunity to fulfill your rightful destiny. The traditions that had long bound women to the sidelines of power seemed more entrenched than ever, casting a shadow over your hopes and aspirations.
“This is fucking bullshit! I won’t be cast aside like this,” you declare, facing the mirror with a steely resolve. You threw the empty bottle at the room with all the strength you could muster, the release of pent-up anger, frustration, all the emotions you felt tonight washing over you like a tidal wave.
Fuck it. Fuck Sukuna. Fuck father. Fuck everything.

As the first light of dawn crept into your room, a small gap in the blackout curtains that you forgot to fully close last night betrayed your efforts to keep the morning at bay. Yep, definitely starting the day this bad, how else will the rest of the day be like?
“Fuck,” you exclaimed so early in the morning. Or so you thought. Grabbing your phone from your nightstand, you tapped the screen to peek the time.
9:54 AM.
With a groan, you closed and threw your phone somewhere in your room and laid down on your stomach. Face clearly being suffocated by your pillows. This life sucks.
“Why does it have to feel this way?” You said with a groan.
Flipping around, and lying on your back, you stared blankly at the ceiling. Absolutely feeling so devoid of everything in life. Your eyes are as empty as the void. It’s like everything was sucked out of you.
Dragging yourself out of bed, you walked over to the window and yanked the curtains shut, shutting out the intrusive light. The darkness offered a slight comfort from the harsh reality of the day ahead, but you knew you couldn't hide forever.
With a heavy sigh, you forced yourself to your feet and began getting ready for the day. Each movement felt like a chore, every action weighed down by the burden of disappointment and betrayal. I hate everyone already.
As you made your way downstairs, the familiar sights and sounds of your family's mansion served as a stark reminder of the life you were born into. Despite the opulence that surrounded you, you couldn't shake the feeling of emptiness that gnawed at your insides.
Walking to your father's office, you braced yourself for the inevitable confrontation that awaited. The door loomed ominously before you, a silent barrier between you and the truth that lay beyond.
With a heavy sigh, you told yourself, “Here goes nothing.”
Summoning all your courage, you pushed open the door and stepped inside, steeling yourself for whatever may come. Little did you know, the events of the day were about to take a turn you never saw coming.
—
“Okay, first of all? What the fuck!” You erupted, your voice dripping with anger and disbelief as you confronted your father.
His face tightened in disappointment at your choice of words, “Language, dear,” he chided, his tone laced with irritation.
Yeah, never mind all the fucking respect he deserves. Scoffing at him, you paid his scolding no mind, too consumed by the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside you.
“Might I remind you,” pacing back and forth, you continued with your voice trembling with pent-up rage, “that you promised me a lot. A fucking LOT of times! That I’m the next head, only to have you pass it over to Sukuna – who by the way isn’t even a part of our family. I’m your family, your flesh and blood, damn it! I’m not even processing this properly yet and now you’re telling me that you already got me on a fucking arranged marriage to someone from the Gojo family? Oh, fuck off, father!”
Your father remained unmoved, his expression unreadable as he calmly countered your tirade. “Honey, it’s just the way it is. Take it or leave it. And, for once, try to act like a respectable daughter,” he retorted, his words like a slap in the face, dismissing your turmoil cold-heartedly.
His indifference fueled your frustration further, and you fought to contain the seething anger threatening to boil over. “I can’t believe this,” you muttered, the weight of betrayal heavy in your chest with your fidgeting fingers.
With a dismissive wave of his hand, your father returned his attention to his book that you unfortunately cut him off from reading earlier, effectively ending the conversation. “I’m busy. Come back when you’re done with your tantrum. Now, leave.”
“I’m not gonna do as you say this time. I’m not gonna marry anyone from that fucking family,” you confidently declared with the fire still burning within you. “I’m not gonna be your fucking pawn, father. I’m leaving this family. So, deal with it.”
Fuming with indignation, you stormed out his office. And, let’s not forget, you slammed the door hard when you left.
This is not the day I’ve envisioned to have today.
—
Back in your room, the weight of the recent events bore down on you like a heavy burden, pressing against your chest with a suffocating intensity.
Yet, there are no tears threatening to fall down anytime soon, just the palpable heartache and silent screams echoing through the depths of your soul. Please, I’m too strong for this.
As a way to make yourself calmer, that can help you gather your thoughts, you decided to go to your restaurant. Yes, the restaurant your father gifted on your 18th birthday. It’s apparently his gift symbolizing his support for your aspirations outside the family’s legacy.
A bitter scoff escaped your lips, “Well, fuck legacy.” Words heavy with anger. As you made your way out your room towards the mansion’s carport, you know in yourself that you got to leave this place. “Yeah, I won’t go back home here,” you mutter to yourself as you approach your car.
Sliding into the driver’s seat, you revved the engine, the purr of the powerful machine echoing throughout the carport. But, as you were getting ready to live, your thoughts inevitably turned to the arranged marriage your father and the Gojo family had arranged.
Just the mere mention of this family sent shivers down your spine. Yeah, I fucking hate that family. They’ve been your family’s rival from the start. Always the territorial disputes, the dirty, underhanded tactics, and the arrogance that runs throughout every family member.
And, then there was Satoru – the one your father chose as your groom. Well, he has no choice, Satoru’s the only heir of his family, definitely of flesh and blood.
To call him attractive would be an understatement – Satoru has that magnetic, alluring charm that was impossible to ignore. Heck, he’s beautiful. With those azure eyes, fluffy white hair, and velvety voice, he’s every woman’s dream – except you. You’re not even sure why you think his hair’s fluffy!
But, all beautiful things have ugly sides. And his was a huge ass dent to his looks. He’s a fucking asshole. Clenching your jaw, you tore yourself away from your thoughts and the carport, steering yourself towards the way to your restaurant.
The drive to the restaurant made you forget everything for a moment. With each passing mile, you felt the tension in your shoulders begin to ease. As you pulled into the parking lot, the sight of your restaurant filled you with a sense of calmness.
Stepping out into the cool embrace of the wind, you savored this feeling that offers a temporary calmness within the raging storm inside you.
“I’m so glad to be back,” you murmured to yourself.
Pushing open the door to the restaurant, you were greeted by the familiar sights and sounds of the bustling kitchen, the savory aroma of spices and herbs filling the air. Your staff, surprised by your unannounced visit, immediately greeted you with a mixture of surprise and fear. You rarely visit. Rarely.
You may own this business, but, you couldn’t really care less about the business side of these things as you’re too busy learning everything your father taught you with. And, this one’s not a part of it. Or, so you think!
He just gave this one to you when he learned you love to cook – which definitely by the way is a short occurrence in your life. You were bored, you learned how to cook, you made everything you’ve been craving for, and now you were bored, again.
But, you can’t deny the calmness that cooking brings you. It takes you out of your thoughts and just focus on prepping and cooking everything up.
Uraume, your most trusted confidante and your restaurant’s head chef, immediately approached you with a knowing look.“You’re only here when you’re stressed,” they remarked, their tone a mixture of sympathy and understanding.
You chuckled wryly as you made your way towards your office. “Yeah and today is no exception,” you replied, the weight of the previous events pressing heavily upon you. “I’ll whip something up in the kitchen. You know what to do.”
As you entered your office, you felt the sense of zen and calm wash over you. With each passing moment of taking in the familiar surrounding, the tension began to ebb away. You slipped into your chef’s jacket, your mind already buzzing with ideas for today’s creations.
Glancing at the clock, you noted the time – 11:21 AM. Perfect timing. Your restaurant is supposed to open in a few minutes, but you instituted a rule long ago: when you were here, no one is allowed to enter the kitchen, and the restaurant will be closed to the public.
A tub of orange chicken sounds nice.
—
Sukuna's luxurious penthouse was filled with the soothing sound of water coming from the shower as he emerged from the steam-filled bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist. With a flick of his hand, he silenced the insistent ringing of his phone, its screen lighting up with a call from Uraume, his most trusted confidante.
Walking across the marble floor towards his bedroom, his thoughts drifted to you, your demeanor from last night.
He knows you’ve been expecting to become the next head. He knows how frustrated you are feeling after the announcement has been made. He just knows. And, it amuses him to see your reaction, the way you wore your emotions so openly. He’s keen on observing you.
“Cute,” he mused to himself with a glint of amusement in his eyes.
Dressing himself in a black slack with an unnecessary tight black folded sleeves, definitely outlining his sexy physique, topped with a suspender, Sukuna admired his reflection in the mirror. Yeah, more like it. His demeanor exuding with such confidence, power, and authority.
Adjusting his reading glasses, his mind buzzed with what’s to come for the day – negotiate with the Naoya from the Zenin family regarding the territorial disputes, dealing with the underground firearm deliveries he missed last night – all in a day’s work for a man of his calibre.
Yet, amidst the chaos of his busy schedule, thoughts of you lingered, an unexpected distraction in his otherwise meticulously organized life.
Shaking this off, Sukuna stepped out onto the expansive balcony overlooking the city skyline. Before he could go on with his day, there was one matter that demanded his attention. Gotta see princess first.
As he reached for his car keys, Sukuna’s thoughts went back to you, a nagging reminder he couldn’t quite shake. How the fuck are you doing now. And, he can’t believe he’s this worried about you.
Brushing aside the thought for the nth time, Sukuna exited the penthouse with a confident stride, the door closing behind him with a soft click.
As he was walking towards the elevator, his phone buzzed with an incoming text message. Glancing at the screen, a smirk tugged at his lips as he read the words: “She’s here.”
“Talk about coincidence,” he chuckled to himself.
Yeah, he can’t wait to meet you.
—
Sukuna stepped out of his sleek black car, the sharp click of his shoes against the pavement. He approached the entrance of the restaurant – which has a sign that says ‘closed’ – and his gaze fixed with a single purpose: to see you.
Pushing open the door that Uraume left unlocked for him, he stepped into the warmth of the restaurant, the savory aroma of the spices and herbs enveloped the cool air. The whole place is completely deserted with only Uraume sitting at one table.
“Where is she,” Sukuna commanded as Uraume pointed towards the kitchen as their answer.
Sukuna’s eyes swept across the room, his gaze setting on the bustling kitchen where you were too focused on. There was a flicker of intrigue in his eyes as he watched you move, completely absorbed in your culinary hobby. You once told him that it was just a hobby and it sticked to him.
As he approached to observe you, the noise of the kitchen seemed to dim. Sukuna’s presence filled the space around you. Sensing him, a prickling sensation at the back of your neck sent a shiver down your spine. Can’t this day get any better?
Turning, you met his gaze head-on, your expression guarded. Yeah, still attractive. You roamed your eyes on his whole physique, with a quick glance at his folded arms that showed his defined biceps. Okay, wrong move because the fluttering pterodactyls in your stomach are back. This made you sigh and cut your gaze off him.
“What do you want?” You asked, your voice tinged with a hint of irritation and skepticism. Sukuna’s smirk only widened at your boldness, his eyes glinting with amusement.
“I came to see you, princess,” he replied smoothly, his tone dripping with charm. You swear even without looking at him, you can see his smug smile that you want to wipe off his face and kiss – okay, what the fuck was that?
You rolled your eyes at his flirtatious tone and breathed heavily to clear up your thoughts, choosing to focus on your cooking instead. Sukuna’s presence is a distraction you didn’t need, especially not today. To top it off, you’re not ready for another confrontation.
“I don’t have time for your games, Sukuna,” you retorted, your voice firm. “If you’re here to eat, then see yourself out.”
Sukuna chuckled at this with his hands unfolding to raise it to a low surrender pose, “I don’t have games for you, princess. You know that. Just came here to check in on you.”
“How did you even know I’m here?”
“Uraume.” Oh, yeah. Even though Uraume’s your trusted confidante, they also are Sukuna’s trusted confidante. It just works like that.
Sukuna’s response only fueled your frustration further. The pterodactyls in your stomach long gone. Of course, Uraume would rather reveal your whereabouts to him that tell you how they even got close with Sukuna. You couldn’t help but feel a pang of annoyance at that.
"I assure you, princess, I mean no harm," he reassured, his voice smooth as silk. "I simply wanted to see how you're holding up after last night.” Yeah, he’s here to gloat.
Last night. The mere mention of it sent a wave of emotions crashing over you – anger, betrayal, frustration. You clenched your jaw, fighting to keep your composure in front of him.
“I’m fine. You can have the fucking title as the head of the family all you want. I’m out of this family,” you replied curtly. Sukuna raised an eyebrow, his expression a mix of amusement and skepticism, as he leaned casually against the wall near the door.
“Why leave?” He challenged, his voice dripping with casual disdain. “You’re just proving to your father that you’re not deserving to be a head. Too weak for this shit, princess?”
“Oh, fuck off, ’Kuna. You don’t know anything,” you shot back, your tone sharp with annoyance.
Sukuna’s facade of nonchalance faltered for a moment, replaced by a feigned hurt expression. “It hurts my pride that you don’t acknowledge me that much, princess,” he said, his words clearly laced with mock sincerity.
“I can see it in your face,” he continued, his tone shifting to one of quiet intensity. “You don’t think I deserve to be the head.”
“Because you really don’t,” you retorted, your words cutting through the tension like a knife. “You’re not even blood-related to father, to us. Just a stranger who climbed up the ranks.” Yeah, you’re quite harsh on this one.
Sukuna’s smirk only widened at your brutal honesty. “Yet, a stranger better than the supposed one-and-only heir,” he quipped, his amusement evident.
Fed up with the conversation, you flipped him off.
Sukuna chuckled, his laughter filling the space between you that made your eyes roll – you swear, you almost blacked out from that eye roll.
“Well, if you ever need anything, you know where to find me. I’m just a phone call away, princess. You know and I know that I’m on your speed dial,” he said with a wink and a smug smirk yet his tone is surprisingly genuine and a bit flirtatious.
But before he could make his exit, you called out to him, the desperation evident in your voice. “Wait.”
Oh, fuck his captivating eyes. Fuck his infuriatingly sexy smirk. Fuck the way his muscles strained against his tight shirt. Fuck those damn eyeglasses that he doesn’t even have to wear because he has a clear vision! Fuck everything, it’s all too much. I just need a way out so fuck my plan, too.
Sukuna paused, turning back to fix his gaze on you with a newfound intense curiosity glinting in his eyes. “Missed me already, princess?” His lips curled into a smug grin as he spoke, a hint of amusement lacing his words.
Your heart pounded in your chest as you gathered the courage to blurt out the unexpected request.
“Marry me, ‘Kuna.”

“No ring?”
Sukuna’s laughter rippled through the room, its timbre a mixture of amusement and something deeper, something you couldn’t quite grasp. His gaze bore into yours, a glint of genuine interest shimmering in the depths of his eyes.
You stifled a sigh, the weight of the moment pressing down on you like a heavy cloak. This wasn’t just a game anymore, was it? There is definitely something deeper, something unspoken between you and Sukuna. But for now, you have to focus on the very unexpected proposition at hand. Still can’t believe I said this one out loud.
Sukuna sauntered to the kitchen island, his movements deliberate and confident. As he perched on the edge and crossed his arms, his muscles rippled, drawing unwanted attention from you. Yeah, fuck those arms.
The tension in the air was palpable, like a taut string ready to snap. You know that this will be more than a simple proposition; it will be something full of deception and desire.
"Well, well, well," Sukuna drawled, his voice low and smooth tinged with curiosity. ”You certainly know how to make things interesting, princess."
His response was left you to wonder what lay beneath his confident facade. But one thing was certain—Sukuna was not one to back down from a challenge, especially when it came from you.
Meeting his gaze head-on you, matched his confidence with your own determination, refusing to let your emotions betray you. Emotions of desire, perhaps?
“And you know how to make things complicated, Sukuna,” you countered, your tone laced with equal parts annoyance and intrigue.
He chuckled, a low, throaty sound that sent shivers down your spine. “Touché,” he conceded, his smirk widening into a devilish grin. Ruffling his hair in a casual gesture, he leaned in closer, his gaze unwavering.
And, of course, he has to ask one of the most dreaded questions you’re looking out for to solidify this ruse. Like a guillotine waiting to fall.
“So, what’s in it for me?”
Sukuna’s question hung in the air, tinged with anticipation. Biting your lip, your mind raced as you weighed your words carefully, keenly aware of the staked at hand. “Piss Gojo off,” you replied, your tone calm but laced with underlying frustration. You both know which Gojo you are talking about.
The mere mention of Gojo seemed to inject an unexpected tension into the room.
Sukuna’s gaze lingered on you, his eyes tracing the curve of your lips as you nervously bit down on the soft flesh. “Huh, you engaged to him or something?” Sukuna’s eyebrows raised in surprise, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes. This is something that totally caught him off guard.
You sighed, the memory of your earlier confrontation with your father flooding back with a wave of irritation. “Father unfortunately had me arranged to him since forever and I only got to know about it today,” you explained, your voice tinged with resentment and bitterness.
To your surprise, Sukuna’s expression softened, a flicker of sympathy passing across his features. “I see,” he murmured, his tone surprisingly gentle as if he understood more than you realized.
Your heart skipped a beat (don’t worry, the pterodactyls are asleep) at the unexpected tenderness in his voice. “Before you agree, I have to negotiate this one with you,” you interjected, seizing the opportunity to lay down your terms before committing to this risky proposition.
Sukuna raised an eyebrow, his eyes alight with curiosity. "I’m listening," he replied, his interest piqued.
“Firstly,” you began, laying out the conditions of your proposal. “We’ll need to secretly get married. And you’ll have to agree to bring me to every meeting, no questions asked.”
Sukuna’s expression shifted, a mixture of surprise and amusement flickering across his features. “You want to get married for real?” he echoed, his tone incredulous.
“It’s the only way to make it believable and divorce's easy nowadays,” you replied, your voice steady. “And it comes with other conditions, too. No other relationships, no hook-ups. Just us.”
Sukuna's smirk faltered, replaced by a look of genuine surprise. “You’re making me a celibate, princess?” he exclaimed, a hint of amusement coloring his words.
“It’s part of the deal,” you insisted, ignoring the waking up pterodactyls in your stomach. “And there’s one more condition: nobody can know about this ruse. Not even Uraume.”
His surprised expression quickly morphed into a smirk, amusement still dancing in his eyes as he processed your conditions. "Well, well, princess," he drawled standing up from the kitchen island with a newfound sense of intrigue. "You certainly don't hold back."
You met his gaze evenly, unwilling to show any sign of weakness in this dangerous negotiation. "I have to be thorough," you stated, your tone firm and resolute. "We can't afford any slip-ups."
Sukuna’s chuckle sent a thrill down your spine, his grin widening into a knowing smirk. "Fair enough," he conceded, his gaze locking with yours. "I can agree to those terms. But what's in it for me beyond just pissing off Gojo?"
You paused, considering his question carefully. There had to be something more to entice Sukuna, something that spoke to his ambitions and desires.
"We both know Gojo isn't the only one with a stake in this," you replied cryptically, your mind racing as you formulated your next move.
Sukuna's eyebrows shot up in surprise, a flicker of curiosity sparking in his eyes. “Oh? Say, it, princess,” he prompted, leaning in closer with an eager anticipation.
You held his gaze, your expression unreadable as you revealed your next proposition. "If we can pull this off convincingly, it could significantly shift the balance of power between our families," you explained, the weight of your words hanging heavy in the air. "And I have no doubt that you would enjoy being on the winning side."
Sukuna's grin widened into a smirk, a glint of excitement gleaming in his eyes. "You're playing a dangerous game, princess," he remarked, his voice low and smooth. "But I like it."
You returned his smirk with a confident grin of your own. "Then we have a deal," you declared confidently.
But Sukuna wasn't finished yet. "Is this an indefinite ruse?" he asked, a hint of caution in his tone.
You shook your head, clarity guiding your response. "Just one year," you confirmed, your voice steady and resolute.
Sukuna mulled over your words for a moment before another question arose. “So, when are we getting married?" he asked, his curiosity evident.
"In three days," you replied without hesitation, already formulating the plans in your mind.
Sukuna nodded, a smirk playing on his lips. "Alright, you got me in your hands, princess," he agreed, his tone filled with anticipation and a hint of excitement.
—
Sitting in his study bathed in the golden hues of late afternoon sunlight, your father's attention was drawn to the insistent ringing of his phone. The clinking of ice against glass resonated as he lifted his crystal tumbler, taking a measured sip of his scotch before answering the call.
“Is everything ready?” His voice, rich and commanding, filled the room with an aura of authority.
A brief pause followed, during which the silence seemed to stretch taut, only broken by the distant hum of the city beyond the windows.
“There has to be no mistake this time around,” he continued, his tone firm and unwavering. “You know what’ll happen if there is.”
The gravity of his words hung heavy in the air, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
—
Sitting in behind the wheel of your car, the weight of the day's events pressing down on you like a heavy cloak, you glanced at your phone for the time.
10:42 PM.
With a weary sigh, you rubbed your temples, feeling utterly drained from the tumultuous day you had endured. The thought of returning to your father's imposing mansion held no appeal tonight, not with the turmoil brewing within its walls.
Thank the heavens you made the decision a few years back to slowly carve out your own space in the world, purchasing a penthouse apartment near the bustling heart of the city. It was a sanctuary of sorts, a refuge from the expectations and pressures of your family's legacy.
As you shifted the car into gear, you knew that tonight, you would seek solace in the quiet comfort of your own home, far away from the echoing halls of your father's domain.
Navigating through the city streets, your mind wandered, replaying the events of the day. From the tense confrontation with your father to the unexpected proposition from Sukuna, and even the burnt orange chicken mishap—each memory added another layer to the burden you carried.
“Nice plan, self. Way to go and embarrass yourself,” you muttered wryly, a hint of self-deprecation in your tone.
Arriving at your penthouse apartment building, you let out a breath you hadn't realized you'd been holding. With a sense of relief washing over you, you parked your car at the underground parking and made your way to the elevator.
In the midst of this silent retreat, a message from an unwelcome sender flashed across your phone screen. Can’t this day get any more worse than last night?
Fucker: heard our wedding’s in a week, baby ♡
“Oh my fucking god,” you irritatingly exclaimed, a surge of frustration and rising within you.
With a swift motion, you deleted the message, unwilling to entertain Satoru’s attempts to provoke you. You blocked his number as means of reclaiming your peace of mind.
Entering the elevator, you jabbed impatiently at the button for your floor, eager to retreat to the sanctuary of your apartment. The doors slid shut, enveloping you in a cocoon of solitude as the elevator ascended. But as the elevator doors opened onto your floor, you were met with an unexpected sight—a figure clad in silk pajamas, leaning casually against the wall.
Your heart skipped a beat as you locked eyes with Sukuna, his presence sending a jolt of surprise coursing through you. A mixture of irritation and disbelief welled up within you as he quipped, “Oh, how interesting, can’t wait for our honeymoon, princess?" his voice laced with shock and sarcasm.
"Seriously?" you shot back, your tone dripping with exasperation. "What are you doing here, Sukuna?”
Dropping his shocked expression, he had his signature smirk back on his face with his casual demeanor only serving to frustrate you even more. “Honey, I live here,” he added with a chuckle, his tone dripping with amusement as he pointed at a door, opposite of yours.
Your eyebrows shot up in surprise at his unexpected revelation, momentarily catching you off guard. "Wait, what? You’re my neighbor?!” you exclaimed, a mixture of disbelief and incredulity coloring your voice.
Sukuna's grin widened into a smirk, his eyes gleaming with mischief as he watched your reaction. “You live here?” he taunted, his tone playful. "Didn't think you'd have your husband as a neighbor, did you?” Yep, he’s as shocked as you.
The absurdity of the situation hit you like a ton of bricks. Sukuna being not only your soon-to-be husband (it’s a ruse, okay?) but also your neighbor felt like a twist straight out of a convoluted drama. You struggled to wrap your head around the surreal irony, feeling like you were trapped in some alternate reality.
As you stepped out of the elevator, Sukuna pushed himself off the wall, his smirk never faltering, you couldn't help but feel a surge of frustration bubbling within you.
“Wouldn’t this make our ruse even more believable, princess?” He teased, “you can't deny the thrill of it all. The universe has a twisted sense of humor, doesn't it?”
"This is ridiculous," you muttered, shaking your head in disbelief. Sukuna’s not leaving you anytime, he’s there to stay in your mind. In your family. In your plan. In your fucking apartment building.
You gritted your teeth, resisting the urge to roll your eyes at his cocky demeanor. "I am not amused and this is not some kind of twisted joke," you snapped, crossing your arms over your chest defensively and tone sharp with irritation and anticipation.
As Sukuna sauntered towards you with lazy confidence with a chuckle that sends a shiver down your spine for the nth time today. "Oh, lighten up, princess," he teased, reaching out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind your ear. "We're in this situation together, whether you like it or not.”
You know what situation this is. The next family head. The one-year ruse. The hidden feelings, desires, and attraction. Everything.
You recoiled at his touch, feeling a surge of defiance rising within you. "Speak for yourself," you retorted, stepping back to put some distance between you.
Though Sukuna's smirk faltered momentarily, it quickly returned, his demeanor unchanged. "Well, you’re still as feisty as ever,” he remarked, amusement lacing his tone. "I love it a lot,” he added with a wink.
You resisted the urge to roll your eyes at his blatant flirtation, refusing to let him see how much his presence unnerved you. With a determined set to your jaw, you turned on your heel and headed towards your apartment, leaving Sukuna behind in the hallway.
As you closed the door behind you, you let out a shaky breath, feeling a mix of frustration and unease swirling inside you. The encounter with Sukuna had only served to heighten your sense of apprehension, leaving you more unsettled than ever.
Meanwhile, Sukuna chuckled to himself as he watched you retreat into your apartment. The irony of the situation wasn't lost on him, and he couldn't help but find amusement in the twists and turns fate had delivered.
"Really funny how the universe works," he mused, a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips. Yet, his amusement was short-lived as he felt a familiar sensation stirring within him, a primal urge that demanded attention.
"She'll be the death of me," he muttered under his breath, a wry smirk playing on his lips. Despite the gravity of the situation, a surge of desire coursed through him, igniting a primal need that demanded attention.
Suppressing the urge with practiced ease, Sukuna reached into the pockets of his silk pajamas and retrieved his phone. With a swift motion, he dialed a number, his voice laced with confidence and authority as he spoke into the receiver.
“Let Toji handle this one,” he instructed, his tone leaving no room for argument. Turning away from the elevator, Sukuna made his way back into his apartment.
—
“What a cold bitch,” a man with striking white hair and undeniably beautiful blue eyes exclaimed as he closed his phone, his frustration palpable in the air around him.
Gojo Satoru was not one to take rejections or being ignored lightly. His charismatic demeanor masked a temper that could flare up with little warning, especially when his advances were rebuffed.
With a flicker of annoyance in his piercing blue eyes, he pocketed his phone and leaned against the wall, his mind already plotting of his next move. Satoru was not one to be ignored, and he was determined to ensure that you would meet him, whether you liked it or not. After all, he certainly wasn't about to let it slide without a response.

“No ring?”
Sukuna’s laughter rippled through the room, its timbre a mixture of amusement and something deeper, something you couldn’t quite grasp. His gaze bore into yours, a glint of genuine interest shimmering in the depths of his eyes.

The morning sunlight streamed through the cracks in the curtains, casting dancing shadows on the walls of your bedroom. Your phone vibrated on the bedside table, jolting you awake from a very, very restless sleep.
The lingering effects of the past few days — the unexpected announcement and the whirlwind of events — had left you feeling exhausted and unsettled. Why does your life seem to deteriorate each day since that fucking party and announcement?
You rubbed your eyes groggily, still processing the reality of your situation. It’s that hard to move on, okay? As you swung your legs out of your comfy bed, your foot brushed against the plush rug beneath, grounding you for a moment before the chaos of the day.
Reaching for your phone by the bedside table, your heart rate spiked as you opened it — staring so long at the text messages waiting on your screen. It is indeed a lot of emotions already this morning. I’m just hungry… right? I haven’t eaten anything since last night.
Sukuna > good morning, princess ;) > so, where are we secretly gonna get married? > gotta have it on my calendar, u know I’m a busy man
A wave of dread washed over you. The reality of your situation hit you with full force, the weight of the impending ruse pressing down on you, and how the fuck you will deal with this. Swallowing the lump in your throat, you closed your phone and laid back down face-first on your bed to bury your face in your pillow.
At least this pillow is soft enough, you thought as you continued to pound your head on it to at least try to escape the overwhelming sense of dread you’ve been having these past few days. The cool, soft fabric offered very little comfort, but at least it was something you could control. Or not.
You’re not ready to deal with anything this early in the morning, please.
After a few minutes of futilely attempting to disappear into your pillow, you pulled yourself together and sat up, swinging your legs over the edge of your bed again. The creak of the bed frame seemed to echo in the silent room.
You opened your phone in hand, your fingers hovering over the screen as you contemplated your reply to the bane of your existence, as you often call him in your mind.
You > will a civil wedding do? > i’ll have it scheduled around noon > and please, no more morning texts
You put your phone down and stand up, stretching your aching muscles. Comfy bed, comfy pillow, but still giving me these aches, you thought. The tightness in your shoulders and back was a reminder of the amount of stress you have. You ran a hand through your hair, feeling the tangled strands pull against your scalp.
“Holy shit,” you muttered as a sudden realization hit you like a ton of bricks. You immediately grabbed your phone, opened your calendar app, and scrolled through it with a sense of dread gnawing at your gut. And there it was — just as you feared. Yes, you did forget something.
There’s a fucking art gala tonight. Sponsored by your father.
Which meant… your father would be there, Sukuna would be there, everyone in the family would be there.
Worst of all? Satoru would be there. You just knew it.
Yeah, you’re skipping this one.
“There’s no way I’m going to the gala tonight,” you mumbled to yourself as you closed your phone and placed it screen down on the bedside table.
You walked towards your ensuite bathroom, and the cold tiles beneath your feet sent a shiver through you. Your disheveled reflection greeted you in the mirror, your hair sticking out in every direction, eyes slightly puffy from the lack of sleep.
“I can’t deal with that hellhole tonight. Dealing with Sukuna is already enough of a headache,” you whispered to yourself, running a hand through your hair in a futile attempt to tame it. The strands slipped through your fingers like silk, but they stubbornly refused to cooperate.
Your mind then wandered to whatever chaos you might be missing this evening. Yeah, there’s something that will happen tonight, you thought with a sinking feeling in your stomach. You gave up on your hair and splashed cold water on your face. The icy shock jolted you awake, but it did little to quell the unease bubbling inside you.

Sukuna’s footsteps echoed sharply against the marble floors, each step resonating through the silent, opulent corridors of the mansion. The walls, adorned with priceless art and gilded fixtures, only accentuated the coldness that seemed to seep up from the floor, biting through the soles of his expensive shoes. He paid it no mind, his thoughts already far ahead, focused on the confrontation that awaited him.
A faint buzz in his pocket broke the silence and paused his strides. Sukuna pulled out his phone, his eyes narrowing as he read your curt reply. He couldn’t help but chuckle in amusement at your attempt to try and take control of your situation like a kitten trying to catch the laser light but ended up tripping over nothing.
He pocketed his phone, his smirk fading as he neared the heavy oak doors of your father’s office and knocked. Without waiting for a response, Sukuna pushed the door open. The air was thick with tension, the kind that clung to your skin and made it hard to breathe. But, not to Sukuna.
Your father, Akira, sat behind his massive desk, the steam rising from a cup of tea curling into the air like tendrils of smoke. The faint aroma of peppermint filled the air, usually calming, and added unease that hung between them.
"Come in, Sukuna,” Akira’s voice was both tired and commanding. Sukuna stepped into the office, his gaze sweeping across the room, taking in every detail — the subtle twitch in Akira’s jaw, the way his fingers tightened around the teacup.
Yeah, he’s still brooding over last night’s drama, Sukuna thought.
"Sukuna," Akira began, his tone laced with disapproval, "I've heard about the incident last night."
Sukuna raised an eyebrow, his expression a perfect mask of indifference. "It was nothing," he replied, his voice calm and almost dismissive. "Just a minor misunderstanding."
Akira’s eyes narrowed to slits, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Minor misunderstandings can have major consequences," he warned. “The fight with the Zenin clan was reckless, and you know it.”
Sukuna shrugged, his posture relaxed, almost bored. "It was necessary," he replied, his tone nonchalant. "They were crossing a line."
Akira slammed his palm onto the desk, the sudden sound echoing through the room. “Just what line are you crossing, Sukuna?” He demanded, his voice a low growl.
“Just because I’ve named you as the next head of this family doesn’t save you from your dumb actions. I can take that back anytime. You’re becoming too reckless, and it’s only a matter of time before your actions come back to bite us all,” he warned. "You can't afford to make any more mistakes."
Sukuna didn’t flinch at the outburst, clearly expecting this reaction from the current family head. He leaned forward, his gaze locking onto Akira’s with an intensity that sent a shiver down the older man’s spine. “I have everything under control,” he said, his voice steady and cold. The calm in his tone was more terrifying than any thread could have been.
Akira sighed, massaging his temples with his fingertips and evident frustration. "You think you have everything under control,” he muttered, more to himself than to Sukuna. “But you're forgetting one thing."
Sukuna tilted his head, waiting, his eyes narrowing slightly and silently waiting for the rebuke.
"Your actions affect more than just yourself," Akira reprimanded, his voice regaining its firmness. "Your choices have consequences for the entire family. I won't stand by and watch you dismantle everything I've built."
Sukuna took a sit down, legs crossed, the chair in front of Akira’s table, a slow smirk spreading across his face. "You're getting emotional," he said with a hint of offense.
Akira’s jaw tightened, his fists clenched at his sides. "I'm being realistic,” he shot back, his voice rising. “You need to start thinking with your head instead of your ego."
Sukuna chuckled a dark, humorless sound. "And you need to stop babying me like I'm some helpless child,” he retorted. “I know what I’m doing. My reckless actions are the reasons you chose me over your daughter. Or have you forgotten that?”
For a moment, the room fell into a tense silence, the words hanging in the air like a loaded gun. Akira stared at Sukuna, his expression a mixture of anger and reluctant acknowledgment. He knew that the young man was right in a sense, but it didn’t make them any easier to swallow.
After what felt like an eternity, Akira spoke again, his voice calmer but no less tense. "Yes, your past actions played a part in your selection,” he admitted, his gaze never leaving Sukuna’s. “But, that does not give you a free pass to do as you please without regard for this family. We are not invincible, Sukuna, and your recklessness will catch up to you eventually.”
Sukuna’s smirk softened slightly, a rare moment of sincerity flashing in his eyes before it was quickly buried beneath its usual bravado. "I get it," he said, his one more subdued, though still laced with that infuriating confidence.
"Good," Akira nodded, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly and his voice still stern but with a hint of relief. "Because this family can’t afford any more of your antics. Not now.”
Sukuna rolled his eyes, raising his arms in a playful gesture of surrender. “Alright, alright old man,” he drawled, his smirk returning in full force. “I'll try to keep my antics in check."
As their conversation shifted to the upcoming gala tonight, Sukuna’s thoughts began to drift. He listened to Akira’s plans with one ear, already calculating his next move.
By the time he left the office, a sense of satisfaction settled in his chest, and couldn’t help but chuckle in satisfaction. He had defused the situation, at least for now. But he knew that old man would be watching him closely, waiting for him to slip.
It’s a game of patience, Sukuna mused. A game I’ve been playing for years. And I’m so close to winning.
—
“Well, fuck,” you muttered under your breath, staring at your reflection in the vanity mirror. You were bathed in soft, ambient light that did little to calm your nerves.
As much as you hated the idea of attending the art gala tonight, you didn’t have the heart to miss whatever you felt would happen. The feeling is too strong to dismiss, okay?
You took a deep breath, trying to steady your racing heart as you adjusted your hair for what felt like the hundredth time. It had been at least 40 minutes since you started getting ready. Usually, you would take less than 30 minutes to get yourself to look presentable, but tonight was different. The clock on your wall ticked away relentlessly, reminding you that you were on the verge of being late.
With a resigned sigh, you puckered up your lips to readjust your dark red lipstick before accepting the inevitable. The deep red dress you had chosen clung to your frame, the fabric shimmering subtly with your movements. It was a beautiful dress, one that made you feel powerful yet vulnerable all at once. I look so good though, you thought.
But, even as you admired the way it complemented your skin, it didn’t ease the knot of anxiety in your twisting in your stomach.
“Just a few more minutes,” you whispered as if convincing yourself could somehow delay the night’s events. Grabbing your clutch, you cast one final glance at the mirror, hoping to see confidence reflected back to you. Instead, all you saw was a woman teetering on the edge of uncertainty.
The drive to the gala was a blur of Tokyo’s city lights and quiet streets. You could feel the nervous energy bubbling under your skin, but you forced yourself to focus on the road.
When you finally arrived, the gala was already in full swing. The grand hall was filled with people, laughter, and the clinking of glasses. Art pieces adorned the walls, each more elaborate and expensive than the last. Normally, you would have taken the time to appreciate them, but tonight, they were just background noise to the chaos in your mind.
The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the undercurrent of power plays masked by polite smiles. You wove through the crowd, trying to find a quiet corner where you could collect yourself.
But before you could escape, the grand hall plunged into semi-darkness. The sudden shift sent a ripple of unease through the crowd, punctuated by the commanding, firm voice you know all too well. You froze, your pulse quickening as the tension in the room spiked.
“Where have you been?”
You turned sharply, your breath catching in your throat as you faced your father, Akira, whose presence was as imposing as ever. His eyes bore into yours with a mixture of frustration and concern. He didn’t need to raise his voice to command attention; the weight of his words alone was enough to make your heart pound.
“I—” you started, but he cut you off with a curt wave of his hand.
“This is not the time for excuses,” he said, his tone cold and clipped. “Do you realize how important tonight is? You were expected to be here on time, not wandering in whenever you felt like it.”
You clenched your fists at your sides, trying to maintain your composure. The tension between you and your father had always been thick, but tonight it felt suffocating, more suffocating than your last confrontation. “I’m here now, aren’t I?” you replied, your voice strained. “Isn’t that what matters?”
Akira’s expression darkened, his jaw tightening as he spoke. “Your presence is the bare minimum. I expected you to support the family, to be an asset, not a liability. You can’t keep running away from your responsibilities.”
His words struck a nerve, but you refused to back down and remain as composed as ever. “I’m not running away,” you retorted, your voice rising despite your efforts to stay calm. “I’m trying to deal with everything you’ve dumped on me, including this ridiculous charade with Sukuna.”
Akira’s eyes flashed with anger, his voice lowering to a dangerous whisper. “You’re lucky I chose him over you,” he hissed. “Do you think you could handle the pressure of leading this family? You can barely keep your emotions in check.”
The sting of his words was like a dagger to your heart, the familiar ache of inadequacy tightening its grip on you. You clenched your fists, fighting the urge to lash out.
“I won’t tolerate any more of your outbursts tonight,” Akira continued, his voice dripping with authority. “Do what you’re supposed to do, and stay out of trouble.”
You didn’t respond, knowing that anything you said would only escalate the situation. Instead, you turned and walked away, the weight of your father’s expectations pressing down on you with every step. The air felt heavy, almost stifling, as you made your way through the crowd, trying to clear your head.
But as fate would have it, your search for solitude was cut short by an all-too-familiar voice that made your blood run cold.
“Ah, there’s my favorite fiancee.” Gojo Satoru’s drawled, his tone oozed with arrogance and mischief, his presence as infuriating as ever.
You stiffened, fingers tightening around your glass as you slowly turned to face him. Satoru stood before you, exuding his usual air of effortless confidence. His stark white hair contrasted sharply with the tailored black suit he wore, and those piercing blue eyes behind his sleek sunglasses sparkled with the same irritating delight that always set your teeth on edge.
“Satoru,” you replied, barely able to keep the venom from your voice. The sight of him is enough to make your skin crawl, your eyes narrowing in distaste. You absolutely can’t stand him.
“Don’t look so thrilled to see me,” he teased, leaning in closer than you liked. “You know, we’re supposed to be making this work. Or did you forget about the message I sent you last night?”
You glared at him, refusing to be baited. “Why are you here, Satoru? Shouldn’t you be off charming some other poor soul?”
A chuckle rumbled in his chest, his voice dropping to a whisper. “You do admit you’re a poor soul,” he said in amusement. “But funny you mention that — I was trying to reach you, but it seems someone decided to block my number.”
You crossed your arms, meeting his gaze head-on, “I don’t have to justify myself to you.”
Before Satoru could reply, a low, dangerous voice sliced through the air, sending a shiver down your spine.
“Am I interrupting something?”
Sukuna’s presence is always an overwhelming one — dark, powerful, and very impossible to ignore. He stepped into view, his crimson eyes narrowing slightly as they flicked from you to Satoru. His sudden appearance even made Satoru’s jaw clench in thinly veiled annoyance.
“Sukuna,” Satoru greeted, his tone light, but there was a sharp edge to it. “Just having a little chat with my fiancee.” He emphasized the last word, as if laying claim to you in front of Sukuna. Oh, if only you know, Satoru, you thought.
Sukuna’s gaze lingered on you for a moment as you stared right back at him, and then his eyes shifted back to Gojo. “Doesn’t look like she’s enjoying it,” he remarked, his voice calm but carrying a subtle challenge.
You know the tension is too tense, and you were caught in the middle of it all. Before you could try to break the ice, Sukuna continued with his tone still calm but now laced with unmistakable authority, “Well, if you’re done, I’d like to have a word with the princess here.”
His gaze bore into Satoru, making it clear that he wasn’t asking for permission. Satoru's smirk faltered slightly, but he didn’t back down, his posture remaining relaxed, though his eyes betrayed the simmering annoyance beneath.
“Princess, huh?” Satoru’s lips curled into a mocking smile as he looked back at you. “Well, I wouldn’t want to keep you from your royal duties.” His tone was laced with sarcasm, but there was a flicker of something darker in his eyes before he finally stepped back.
“Don’t let me keep you, darling,” Satoru said, his voice deceptively sweet, but the undercurrent of hostility was unmistakable. He brushed past you, his shoulder grazing yours as he left, the brief contact sending a jolt of irritation through your body.
As he walked away, you let out a breath you didn’t realize you’d been holding, your entire body tense from the exchange. Sukuna remained silent beside you, his presence as imposing as ever. You could feel his gaze on you, heavy and unwavering, but you couldn’t bring yourself to meet his eyes just yet.
Finally, after a long moment of silence, Sukuna spoke, his voice low and with a hint of amusement, “A civil wedding, really? How is that discreet enough?”
You finally looked up, meeting his eyes, searching for any sign of mockery. But what you saw was something else — curiosity, maybe, or perhaps a challenge. As he always has.
"It’s the easiest way to make it legal without drawing too much attention," you replied, trying to sound more confident than you felt. "Besides, it’s quick, and we don’t need an audience."
He tilted his head slightly, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “And here I thought you’d want something grander, with all the bells and whistles,” he teased, but there was an edge to his tone as if he was testing you.
You shook your head, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. “We’re not doing this for real, Sukuna. It’s a ruse, remember? The less attention we draw, the better.”
He considered your words, his gaze never leaving yours, as if weighing your resolve. “So you think a quick signature and some paperwork will fool everyone?” he asked, his tone soft but laced with skepticism.
“It’s not about fooling everyone,” you countered, your voice firm. “It’s about keeping things under control until we figure out the next step. This marriage is just the beginning, not the endgame.”
Sukuna’s smirk widened, a glint of amusement flashing in his eyes. “You’re serious about this,” he observed, sounding almost impressed. “I didn’t expect you to be so... committed.”
You held your ground, refusing to back down despite the proximity. “I’m not naive, Sukuna,” you replied, your voice firm. “I know what I’m getting into.”
He watched you for a long moment, his eyes searching yours as if looking for something hidden beneath the surface. Then, with a slow, deliberate nod, he finally relented. “Alright, princess,” he said, his voice low and smooth. “But you might want to ease up on the seriousness. You’re making this sound more like a business transaction than a scheme.”
You rolled your eyes, feeling the tension in your shoulders beginning to dissipate, just slightly. “That’s because it is a business transaction, Sukuna. And I’m pretty sure you’re not one to shy away from deals.”
He chuckled, the sound rich and dark, and it sent a strange thrill through you. “True enough,” he conceded, stepping closer until there was barely any space between you. “But don’t you think it’s time to relax? We’ve done enough plotting for one night.”
You raised an eyebrow, crossing your arms over your chest as you looked up at him. “And how exactly do you propose we do that?”
Sukuna’s smirk widened, his eyes gleaming with mischief. “I have a few ideas,” he said, leaning in slightly. “How about we start with a drink? You look like you could use one.”
You hesitated for a moment, but then nodded, realizing he was right. You could definitely use a drink. “Fine,” you agreed, uncrossing your arms. “But just one.”
Sukuna’s grin was almost predatory as he led you to a secluded corner where a small bar was set up. The bartender looked up as you approached, and Sukuna ordered two drinks without even asking you what you wanted. He seemed to know exactly what you needed—something strong, something that would take the edge off the evening’s events.
When the drinks arrived, Sukuna handed you a glass, and you took it, eyeing the amber liquid inside. You took a cautious sip, the warmth spreading through you almost instantly. It was stronger than you expected, but somehow, it was exactly what you needed.
“To our little charade,” Sukuna said, raising his glass in a mock toast.
You couldn’t help but smirk as you clinked your glass against his. “To whatever the fuck will happen,” you replied, before taking another sip.
The alcohol burned pleasantly as it went down, and you could feel yourself beginning to relax. The tension that had been coiled tight within you all evening was starting to unravel, and you found yourself leaning back against the bar, feeling a little more at ease.
Sukuna watched you closely, his eyes never leaving your face as you drank. “Feeling better?” he asked, his voice low and intimate.
“A little,” you admitted, swirling the liquid in your glass. “But don’t get any ideas. This doesn’t change anything.”
He chuckled again, the sound sending a shiver down your spine. “Of course not, princess. But it doesn’t hurt to enjoy the moment, does it?”
You rolled your eyes but couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at your lips. “You’re impossible.”
“And you’re stubborn,” he shot back, his tone playful. “It’s a wonder we haven’t killed each other yet.”
“Give it time,” you muttered, though the edge in your voice had softened.
Sukuna raised an eyebrow, his smirk widening. “Is that a challenge?”
“Maybe,” you said, finishing off your drink and setting the glass down on the bar. “But let’s see if you can keep up first.”
Sukuna’s eyes gleamed with amusement as he signaled the bartender for another round. “Oh, I intend to.”
The drinks kept coming, and before you knew it, you were both laughing more easily, the sharp edges of your words softened by the alcohol. The tension that had weighed so heavily on you earlier seemed to melt away, replaced by a surprising sense of camaraderie.
“Tell me,” Sukuna said after a while, leaning closer, his voice conspiratorial. “What was the real reason you chose me for this scheme of yours? Was it because I’m the only one who can handle you?”
You snorted, shaking your head. “Please, don’t flatter yourself. You were just the least annoying option.”
“Least annoying?” he repeated, feigning offense. “I’m hurt, princess.”
You rolled your eyes, but there was no malice behind it. “Oh, don’t be so dramatic. You know exactly why I chose you—you’re ruthless and cunning, and you don’t get sentimental.”
Sukuna’s gaze intensified, his eyes locking onto yours with an intensity that made your breath catch. “And you think that makes me the perfect partner for this little game of yours?”
You held his gaze, refusing to back down. “It makes you dangerous,” you said quietly. “And that’s exactly what I need. I kind of trust you, too.” It’s the alcohol speaking, is it?
For a moment, the playful banter between you faded, replaced by something heavier, more charged. The air between you crackled with unspoken tension, a challenge hanging in the balance.
Then, with a slow, deliberate smile, Sukuna leaned back, the moment of intensity passing. “Well then, princess,” he said, his tone lightening once more. “Let’s see how dangerous we can really be.”
The night wore on, and the drinks continued to flow, loosening your tongues and blurring the lines between ally and adversary. You found yourself laughing more than you had in a long time, the weight of the world temporarily lifted by the alcohol and Sukuna’s surprising wit.
By the time you realized just how much you’d had to drink, it was too late. The room was spinning slightly, and your movements were less coordinated than they should have been.
But somehow, it didn’t matter. The knot of anxiety that had been twisting in your stomach all night had finally loosened, replaced by a warm, hazy contentment.
Oh well, might as well enjoy the rest of the night, right?

Maybe this is a stretch, but I think Edward Hyde is more tragic than Jekyll. Partly because anyone who read the novella will know Jekyll's a hypocritical bitch, but Hyde was created solely for the purpose of evil. He was never even given a chance to try and be a good person. And if he had, if he had tried he would be destined to fail anyway, because that's what Jekyll made him for. And because this is the purpose he was created for, no one around him gives him a chance either. Everyone who meets Hyde assumes he's a terrible person, without knowing him. And I know that's one of the Victorian beliefs; your outward appearance is affected by your sins, but given that one of Stevenson's messages is that appearances are deceiving... I do wonder how Hyde could be if he hadn't been designed for the very purpose of evil. And I know, that he is still Jekyll, but if Jekyll is allowed to separate himself from Hyde in his confession, I'm allowed to do it too.
