Charlie opened to a page in 2 Samuel in the

and I’m certain it was a place opened at random, as there were no bookmarks/worn creases/dog-eared pages to guide him there from the book being completely closed. The most convincing aspect to why it’s meaningless is that he can be seen picking that spot randomly during the scene with his left thumb as the pages flip down quickly from his right.

(bible pages are very thin; the upturned corner of many of the pages that could be mistaken for a placeholder was done right then when he shoves his thumb in while the pages are quickly flipping)

I think they chose to not make any direct ties to specifics of a certain biblical story or something with this joke because of a combination of lack of masterful knowledge of what they could have attemped to choose (there’s usually thoughtful depth behind this show’s choice of quality parallels and references) and that it might have had a chance of being unnecessarily or unintentionally offensive.

There’s a small sticky sound to denote it’s... stickiness, but there’s not actually anything on the bible. This is a better choice by both avoiding any upset over claims of maybe desecrating a sacred text and not having to end up picking any specific part in the book in the first place.

Whatever is going on at that point in the bible is entirely irrelevant because it was opened at random right there on screen.
