Owl Magick

Owl Magick

Owl Magick

Owls often portray Athena, the Greek Goddess of wisdom.

In Native American stories owls are most commonly associated with prophecies and divination.

To the Hopi tribe the burrowing owl was thought to be sacred and symbolized their god of death. They also believed that the burrowing owl was the protector of the underworld and things that grew in the earth (seed, plants).  Since this species of owl nests in the ground, it represents earth itself.

In some African countries the owl represents sorcery and baneful magic. When a large owl hangs around a house in is said that the house contains a powerful shaman. It is also believed that owls carry messages back and forth between the shaman and spirit realm.

The Romans believed that nailing an owl to the door of their home would keep evil at bay.

Throughout great Britain during the eighteenth century people would nail owls to barn door to protect the livestock from fire and lightning.

Throughout Europe owls were thought of as a symbol of death and destruction.

Appalachians also believed that owls bring death. According to mountain legends it was said that if an owl is seen circling during the day, it means bad news for someone close by. In some areas, it is believed that owls flew down on Samhain night to eat the souls of the dead.

The owl is associated with the mysterious, clairvoyance, omens, silent wisdom, and vision.

If you find an owl feather, it can be used for several different purposes. The Zuni tribe believed that an owl feather placed in a baby’s crib kept evil spirits away from the infant. Other tribes saw owls as bringers of healing, so a feather could be hung in the doorway of a home to keep illness out. In the British Isles, owls were associated with death and negative energy, so feathers can be used to repel those same unpleasant influences.

The owl symbolizes our third or spiritual eye and is associated with inner knowledge.

You Cannot Touch Her Curse/Binding
You Cannot Touch Her Curse/Binding
You Cannot Touch Her Curse/Binding

“You Cannot Touch Her” Curse/Binding

This curse is particularly for people who have done harm in the past, and as such already known to be a potential threat. The idea is to keep the person from speaking to or approaching the one you’re trying to protect, and to make them feel watched and judged for their past actions.

You will need the following:

A jar big enough to hold a poppet

Some kind of poppet - I used a wooden one with the offender’s name written on the bottom. A photo could also be used

White out

A black candle

A mixture of black salt & cayenne pepper

A sigil of your own design meaning “You cannot touch [name or pronoun]”

A permanent marker

Light the candle and white out the mouth of your poppet. Roll the poppet in the mixture of black salt and cayenne pepper (black salt tends to stain so keep this in mind). Place it in the jar and seal the lid, leaving the poppet inside under the gaze of dozens of eyes. Write your sigil on the lid. During or after all of this, say the following aloud or think it to yourself (change pronouns accordingly):

You cannot touch her. You cannot speak to her. Think of her and bring this curse upon you. May your tongue catch in your throat if you dare to reach her. May you burn and ache if you come near. May you feel eyes upon your back each time you think her name. They’re watching. I’m watching. May you forever question the gaze of others - Do they know the things you’ve done? I do. I curse you. I bind you. You cannot touch her.

Stash the jar in a dark place, like a closet or a cabinet (I don’t recommend burying jars). Let the candle burn until it extinguishes itself.

I am quite disturbed when I see people discussing baneful magic methods, like cursing, because I've had someone throw a curse on me once out of their unhappiness over me having something they didn't have. Don't people suffer energetic blowback from cursing others? Karma is an impersonal and unavoidable energetic action, in my view, yet I don't see these people suffering for the cursing they've done.

The effect of curses is certainly something interesting! I too get uncomfortable with the prevalence of cursing, but I also recognize each person has their own motivations and it’s not my place to invalidate someone’s practice. Curses can be a tool for emotional processing (just not my chosen one) or for defense (i.e. “if you harm me this curse will affect you”–casual curses do make a lot of sense to me). You and I can totally feel the way we do, though, too!

Karma is a subject I’ve talked about a bit and, although I’m not Buddhist or affiliated with any religion that discusses karma, I definitely can share my understanding of how harmful actions affect us on the universal level. In terms of curses, these are my thoughts.

I don’t personally think someone who curses another will be punished by the Universe, since I believe the Universe is completely benevolent and loving of even the most malevolent people doing the most malevolent things–totally unconditionally loving (just not always condoning the action, of course). Granted, people who harm others I do believe suffer, but it’s of their own volition.

Hatred, which often drives curses and similar retaliatory or harmful behavior, is a fantastic way to destroy inner peace. Hatred (and other states of vengeful or pained anger) is such a heavy feeling to carry and this itself is suffering in its finest form. If someone chooses to curse another, the act of malevolence inspires or validates this hatred and upset and perpetuates the individual’s suffering. It may be a temporary release, but it will never allow for contentment, peace, or healing of a true sort.

If someone was to not curse and instead do the difficult work of examining their anger or hatred and releasing it through fostering compassion, love, empathy, patience, and so on, they are freeing themselves from suffering.

In this way, someone who acts malevolently brings suffering upon themselves (because they avoid healing their pain). Someone who acts from a place of compassion and doesn’t harm others intentionally faces their pain and heals it, releasing themselves from suffering.

This type of suffering is often not visible on the surface, since the most painful forms of suffering happen inside of us. Anyone who harms others, I believe, is a person who is in deep pain. Pain, hateful anger, and other deeply difficult feelings are the only things capable of cause the irrational belief that harming others can heal us, after all.
