She leaned her head on her arm and watched the raindrops pattering down on the window. Her eyes fell on Seungmin standing across her, one of his hands holding a loaf of bread and the other carefully slicing the bread. Next to him, the contents of the pot were boiling, and the steam mixed with the smell was wafting through the kitchen.
The kitchen was empty, as the king had excused his workers for the day, saying that today was their glorious day. She was speechless and her stomach churned at the thought of anything happening to Chan. Last nightâs nightmare and the absence of Chan in the morning only intensified the eerie whispers in her head.
Chan would be fine, and Taehyun and Beomgyu would protect him if the worst happened.
Fortunately, Seungmin came to her rescue. His offer to cook his favourite dish and lend an ear to her story was so tempting that she had to accept it. It had been pouring since the morning, so everyone, including her, had to stay inside or they would get soaked.
And it was something new for herâŚnormally, on days like this, she would leave the house and play in the rain with Chan until one sneezed â it acted as a sign for them to stop and return to the fireplace to warm themself.
The soft knock on the table interrupted her thoughts as she glanced up and saw Seungminâs small smile before he sat before her. On the table was a plate with slices of bread and a bowl of soup, the smell of which made her stomach growl. When she heard it, a chuckle escaped her lips as her face began to turn red.
âItâs just a simple dish that my mom taught me when I was having a bad day,â Seungmin said as she took a spoonful of the soup and popped it into her mouth. Seungmin unconsciously chewed on his lower lips, his fingers rubbing together as he silently observed every change in her facial features. He had never cooked for anyone before.
Her eyes lit up with surprise and she let out a hum. Seungminâs shoulders slumped in relaxation when hearing it.
âThank you for cooking this, min!â
âYouâre welcome! I hope it helps you forget the nightmare.â
She continued to enjoy the food and he turned his head toward the pile of paper resting on the table along with the food, he sighed. He propped his head on his palm.
âThe marriage is next weekâŚare you prepared for it?â
His smile disappeared instantly after asking it. If it were him, he would answer no â not when everything felt rushed and out of place. A wedding in the middle of a hunt for her best friend and his newfound fairy friends, how could the king think it was a good idea?
A wedding should take place in a peaceful settingâŚ
Scoffing, she put the spoon aside. âDoes my answer matter?â
âOf course it does! It's about your future, which everyone has to decide for themselves!â Frustration resonated in his voice as he buried his face in his palm. She giggled and took his hand.
âHonestly, Iâm not, but since itâs with you, I donât mind. Iâm looking forward to our future,â she said and he could hear his heart beating aggressively against his ribcage as he rubbed his slightly flushed ear.
He turned his palm and intertwined their fingers. âThank you for giving me a chance, Y/N. I promise Iâll take care of you for your family and Chan. Oh, talking about Chan, Iâm excited to meet him after this!â
âIâm still glad that you get along with him well.â
âHe and the other are so kind âŚI donât understand why the King wants to kill them.â
She didnât understand either.
After finishing the dish, she cleaned it up and headed to her bedroom with a container filled with cookies they baked earlier. They will be heading to Chanâs cottage later since Seungmin needed to clean the kitchenâs mess first.
She placed the container next to the black feather and sat on her study desk. The branches had been dancing and beating against the window pane since she had entered. She paid less attention to it and let her gaze wander into the forest. Her memories of Chan surfaced in the back of her mind.
Ten years had passed since their first encounter, but it still felt like yesterday. How soft his dark wings were beneath her delicate fingertips, the confused look they exchanged and the first invitation that led to their friendship today.
A small smile tugged on her lips as she remembered that moment. A gust of wind slipped through the creaking window sill, pushing an untouched letter towards her. She reached for the letter and opened it while tilting her head, brows furrowing.
Why she didnât notice it? How long had it been here?
Her eyes immediately noticed a smudged red stain at the end of the letter. A loud thud echoed through the room before she could make out the words on the paper. She jerked her head around and her eyes widened at the sight of a figure lying on the floor.Â
She ran over to him and helped him to lean against the bed. He was half conscious, his eyelids tightly closed, when a soft moan sounded.
The grip on his wounded stomach tightened as he struggled against the pain. A thick red liquid flowed slowly from his hand and spread over his wet shirt.
âBeomgyu! What happened?â There was a note of panic in her voice.
âAnâŚattack. The Stellious army is attacking us. We're trying to stop them, but someone is helping them.â
The door flew open and Seungmin rushed to her side, pressing on Beomgyuâs wound to stop the blood from gushing out so much.
âWhy are you here?! Why aren't they here?!â Her body trembled with fear.
She was worried about Chan.
Her gut feeling was right. Her nightmare wasnât a demon game.
âChan sent me to warn you. He asks you to stay put and not look for himâ A cry escaped Beomgyuâs lips. She pulled a box from under her bed and took out bandages and a sewing kit.
âThis is going to be painful, Beomgyu. Please hang in there.â
She took her hand from the wound, revealing bloody, torn skin. It was a sword gash.
She dabbed the bandage around the wound, cleaned up the excess blood and began to stitch, though the metallic fluid didnât seem to stop. Seungmin held Beomgyuâs hand. By the time Beomgyuâs wound had sewed up, her hands were coated with blood.
She stared at her trembling hands while thousands of scenarios played out simultaneously in her head and a wave of dizziness and nausea washed over her. She stood up and grabbed the feather, her hands clenched around it.
With glossy eyes, she spared Beomgyu a glance.
âPrincess donât!â He pleaded with watery eyes
âIâm sorry, Beomgyu!â
Beomgyu jumped towards her and tried to stop her, but it was too late. His action hurt him even more as he landed on his injured stomach.
The wave of dark dust engulfed her.

Her heels froze on the ground as the sight of the ordeal presented itself to her. The grass was covered in blood and the rain soaked the corpses. Swords and arrows all covered in the same liquid scattered across Chanâs front yard. A field of blood
A field where they used to dance and play
Y/Nâs POV
"My dad said magic is dangerous because it can make people selfish. He always said that those born with magic are evil," I uttered, staring at the soil in my palm. You twirl your finger around the soil and a purple crocus emerges, unfurling its beautiful violet-purple petals. You plucked the flower, wiped off the excess soil and tugged the fresh blossom to my ear â I loved how a smile immediately dominated your face.
"Yes, for some people, but I'll never be like them. Anyway, do you want to see something amazing?"
"Sure!"
You stared at one of the trees nearby, your grey eyes glowing a bright colour compared to your dull eyes, which I found incredible. The branches of one of the trees came towards us, forming a circle beneath me and lifting me into the sky.
I shivered from the height, but that subsided when I saw the scenery, The Stellious Kingdom. The view from up there was amazing, like you said, breathtaking even. You were next to me, hugging me gently from the side.
Was it possible to feel comfortable around someone you've only known since yesterday?
"Why would Dad and Mom hide such scenery from me, Channie?" I turned my gaze to you, hoping for an answer.
"I don't know, little Flora."
"They always lock me in the palace, I've never been allowed out. Except yesterday."
"Maybe they're trying to keep you away from any danger. Besides, not everyone you meet in the future has a pure heart"
I sighed "You're right. My parents know what dangers can come my way if no one takes care of me, but I feel safe with you, Channie."
"Thank you, little Flora. I feel safe and happy in your company, but you must tell your mother before you come to see me, mhm?"
You were wrong, Chan, danger was always at my side and held me hostage.
How could he?
Tears gathered under my eyes as my heart beat faster. I whirled around, my hand wrapped around the doorknob. My hands kept slipping as I tried to pry the door open. My knuckles turned white when I finally managed to turn the doorknob.
The pattering of the rain faded away from my hearing and was replaced by the sound of my heartbeat. A soft gasp was all I could produce.
Was this what he meant by glorious day?
"This place is fantastic!!! Can I come here often?" I asked with a hopeful tone. You sigh as you fetch two cups of tea, placing one in front of me and sitting opposite me.
"Only if your mother lets you"
When I heard your reply, I immediately sulked. I know they wonât like you
"Mom certainly wouldn't allow it. She's too strict and also busy with Dad," I crossed my arms and pouted.
"Then sure. You can come here. Do you like reading? I still have tons of unread books on the shelf."
"Yes, yes!!! I love books!â You emerged and picked up some books. You handed them to me. I gasped and started turning the pages and getting engrossed in the story. Minutes passed and you just stared at me, a few careless giggles escaping my lips as I imagined the scene in my head.
"Reading books is the only way I forget that I'm alone and stuck in the palace. When I read, I feel like I'm not in that dim room," I blurted out, lifting my gaze and meeting your eyes. You were taken back for the second time that day
"Me too. It helps me forget my pain" You calmly replied
"I'm glad I've someone who thinks like me"
I laughed and read on. I was glad that I had met someone who could understand me for the first time. The hours passed and the sun began to hide behind the horizon and welcome the moon. You, who noticed the change, quickly spoke up
"It's getting late, little Flora. Let's go home, shall we?" I nodded vigorously, closed the book and hugged it tightly to my chest.
And the dam broke and gushed into my cheeks. I rushed to the lifeless body in the middle of the cottage. Each step I took grew heavier as I tried to deny the truth in my head.
No, this is a dream
It must be
I sank to my knees and pulled your head into my lap. My tears fell on your pale face ⌠since when has your face been so pale?
One night I woke up and realised that you werenât lying next to me in bed. I looked up and the guilt consumed me. I was sleeping on your lap, you hadnât moved me. I sat, leaning against the wall, next to you.
You sleep fitfully because of me. I let your head sink onto my shoulder and your arm wrapped around my waist. I ruffled your hair before sleep engulfed me again.
âHey, Channie, wake up,â I whispered, resting my forehead on yours. My arms wrapped around your shoulders and pulled you close. It felt empty without you returning my embrace.
You must be freezing, right?
Is this the end?
âYou promised to accompany me at my wedding. You promised me that you would show me your drawingâ
âIâm sorry, Chan. I wasnât there for your last moment,â I sniffled. I would no longer feel your warm hand wiping away my tears. I wouldnât hear your laughter anymore. No one will accompany Seungmin and me to the river anymore.
Your smile in the back of my head will hurt me now.
Loud footsteps startled me and I jerked my head towards the source and saw Seungmin and an injured Taehyun. I opened my mouth, but nothing came tumbling out.

I stood before the grave as Seungmin and Taehyun pushed the last lumps of dirt into the hole. I pulled the blanket tighter around my body. The stain on my cheeks was abandoned as I knew it was pointless to wipe them off.
You were six feet under the ground ... next to your parents.
Suddenly I remembered your siblings. How would they react? Would they react like me or even worse?
âThank you for everything, Chan.â
This is our last goodbye, Bang Chan

I arrived at my room with new clothes after Seungmin asked me to change. I looked over at Beomgyu and Taehyun who were sleeping in my bed, their clothes still soaked with blood and rain. My heart wrenched with guilt as I remembered that my father was the cause of their injuries and Chanâs death.
It was surreal to say this out loud. It felt like the aftertaste of biting into a poison ivy.
They canât leave the castle yet, the army has probably moved through the forest looking for the fairies.
I went to my desk and picked up the diary Taehyun had given me. It was your last gift to me. Did you foresee your death, Chan?
I sat down on the floor and began to read the entries. A thin smile appeared on my lips. You wrote a lot about your siblings and me, even about the moment your parents died.
Until I stopped at a page. The page was half torn, and the uneven edge showed a sign of hesitation. Why did you want to throw it away?
: I was supposed to kill the princess tonight, but I couldnât bring myself to do it. She's just a little girl! How could I? You canât blame me, no one can, unless theyâre evil enough. I set the bakery on fire because Flora was there alone. When I heard her screaming for her mother, something within me ached. The guilt I felt back then has never gone away.
I rushed back into the house, hugged her tiny silhouette and threw myself onto the roof before the bakery explodedâŚ. before she died. There are long scars on my wings now. I think of them as a gift for saving the girl. So I can remember that was my last mission before I left Duncan. Duncan would kill me now, wouldnât he? If this is my final entry, consider Iâd die in Duncanâs hands. I donât think I will make it out alive the next time I meet him.
A dot appeared on the page, one after the other. I buried my face in the book. I found it harder to breathe, my mouth was gasping for air to fill my burning throat.
Is that true? You wrote it. You wonât lie in your diary.
An arson⌠that was the accident. He was misunderstood.
He was a villain who wanted to change, but fate betrayed him. The king had never considered what one must do to survive. He had not considered that a family grieves when it learns of the death of a loved one.
My arm fell to my side and I flinched as I felt the cold on my finger. I looked up and saw a dagger, the dagger I had brought with me from the cottage. A voice told me to pick it up and I did.
I stood up and marched to the kingâs office.
But Chan promised himself that he wouldnât do it again.
I opened the door quietly and walked towards him. He was staring through the window at the city.
You donât deserve this ending
I raised the dagger, my nails digging into my skin with rage. Was it rage? Or just despair?
Out of the blue, a hand was shoved into my mouth and the other held my hand from behind. The figure dragged me out of the room. The silhouette of the king slowly disappeared from my field of vision as tears welled up in my eyes.

Being an idol, Seungmin knew that he was bound to get hate, he wasn't stupid. However, when a part of him that was so natural, so pure, began to be picked apart by malicious commenters on the internet, there was no way he could control the way his brain believed it was true.
Why was it so wrong for him to smile when something made him happy? Why was it met with disgust when he simply smiled at something that made him laugh? Joy came to Seungmin just as easy as it was filling his lungs with air. It didn't matter what it was, whether he was messing around with his members or spending time hanging out with his best friend, he felt the muscles in his face twitch and his lips quirk upwards. But now, it was just as easy for his hand to instinctively cover the bottom half of his face, and it was much harder to avoid that feeling of suffocating.
Tears slowly raced down Seungmin's cheeks, fighting their way to be the first one to land on his phone screen displaying a multitude of hateful comments. The guy couldn't help himself. He purposefully searched his name, the word 'smile' and the word 'ugly' to have his new insecurity reaffirmed to him. In a sick and twisted way, he now needed validation to himself that the development of what he saw as a fault, was still circulating the internet by accounts that claimed themselves to be a stay. A part of him wished that someone could take it all away. He felt as if he had been doing so well in growing his confidence over the years of being in Stray Kids, yet he fell hook, line and sinker to just one person pointing out something about his appearance. And now, he couldn't get enough of it.
He was sat alone, curled up in the lounge of his best friend's apartment whilst she went to change into comfy clothes, or do her nighttime routine, something like that. Seungmin couldn't remember. His mind was elsewhere. Different to how he usually acted, when he'd succumb to the plush grey cushions on the luxurious sofa and end up falling asleep, he was instead fixated on the blue light from his device.
"Hey Mong-Mong," his best friend grinned as she curled up on the other end of her sofa, mirroring him close enough but not fully.
"Hey loser," Seungmin joked as he pretended to yawn for an excuse to wipe his eyes and have his face a bit red.
"You alright?" she asked in concern, acting different from her usual feisty self of fighting back against his comments.
She was always there to support him. From when he was a trainee, experiencing his first win at Music Bank, to celebrating his achievements overseas too, like when he went to the Met Gala. His best friend was always there, whether it was physically, in spirit or through an uncharacteristically cute message through text. She was a hype woman at heart, really.
"Yeah, just tired. It's so hard being an idol," Seungmin fake chuckled, removing his hands from his face yet pulling at the toggles of his hoodie to scrunch the fabric around his face more.
There was certainly some truth in that statement.
"Did Chan tell you off for calling him old again?" she smirked at him, kicking his foot til he made a sound of annoyance.
"Yah! Who's side are you on?"
His side. She always was. With valiant effort she was sure she could pull him back to the brighter side of life, so he was able to shine again, and his smile too. She wasn't oblivious. As someone who was chronically online, she was very well versed in being a Stay, and had seen other true fans upset about what they heard about Seungmin from antis, and also from how they'd seen it affect him. So, gradually, she tried to boost his mood, easing in comments about his smile amongst many other compliments she'd give him.
"I'm so jealous, Puppy. Your skin is glowing, the hair is hairing and the teeth are shining. Tell me your secrets and Jeongin doesn't have to get hurt!"
Ok so maybe she did threaten to take a pair of scissors to her Jeongin photo card, but it got a laugh out of him, even if it caused her great pain to hold a precious item at ransom.
It was later, instead of sooner, that Seungmin felt a change within himself. He felt lighter, warmer, happier. Although his bad habit had not completely stopped, he felt himself reaching out for his phone for a bedtime scroll less and less. That was all because she was there to help him not care. She really did carry him out of his hateful thoughts.
"You take care of yourself so well, look at how you've done your hair today, bright smile as always, and look at the fittttt!" she boasted about her best friend, to her best friend, standing up in front of his nonchalant form that was once again, right at home on her sofa.
She should give him a spare key at this rate.
"You want something," Seungmin rose and eyebrow in suspicion at her cheeky smile.
"Nope. No. No I don't. Why you lying Seungmin? I know you're lying," she nearly pressed her face up right against his as she theatrically and drastically changed her tone.
"Don't gaslight me," Seungmin groaned, shutting his eyes and pushing her away by her forehead.
"I would never do that," she smiled sweetly, dumping herself on the sofa.
"Stoppp! You want something, I swear," Seungmin smiled slightly, shaking his head at her antics.
"I just want my Seungminnie happy all the time," she pinched his cheeks, and just for fun she threw a little bit of aegyo in there to really harness a bigger reaction.
"First of all, never do that again. Like, seriously... that was gross. Second of all, you're asking a lot there," he leant his head back on the sofa, feeling exasperated yet humoured at the same time.
"I am. But I like seeing it. That cute smile-!" she moved quickly to pinch his cheeks again but he swatted her away.
"Noona!" Seungmin whined, still holding his arms out in front of him in pure defense.
"Aish, I'm literally a year older than you don't call me that," she shivered.
"You act just like my noona," Seungmin sighed through his nostrils.
"Hmm your noona seems smart. I miss her. I haven't seen her in ages. Maybe she'll be my new bestie," she teased him.
Seungmin laughed in disbelief, gaining a moment of peace when he saw her go quiet and just admire his face.
"Ahhh I knew it!!!" Seungmin lifted off of his seat, pointing at her in what she supposed was elation.
"Hmm? Oh you know something? That's really shocked me," she taunted him.
"Shut up, pabo. You've been trying to make me laugh this whole time!" Seungmin clapped his hands as he explained his thoughts out loud.
"Yes. And I won. Oh stays will love me so much," she started shimmying, a weird little celebration dance but Seungmin loved it nevertheless.
"Stays would think you're a nuisance," Seungmin kicked her leg lightly with a louder laugh, playfully raising his fists and pretending to try and box her.
She had been there the whole time lifting his spirits. He didn't have to bluntly say it then and there but there was a mutual understanding that she had done all she could to get him to smile and realise the beauty in such a simple thing. It was sad that people had stopped him but she had worked hard against that and was successful in the mean time.
And so the world saw the beauty in him again, that she had seen all along.

âCome on! You will miss the sun kiss, Chan!â She ran to him, helping him carry one of the easels. Chan let a smile dominate his lips as he quickened his pace toward their painting place for today - his motherâs favourite place. While positioning the easel, he caught her spinning around the meadow - hands spread widely and her sky-blue skirt billowing. Her brown lock shone under the golden afternoon light - her eyes reflected it.
His action died down in an instant. He twirled his hand in a motion. Flowers around her bloomed after a wave of yellow dust flew across them. She seems more like a fairy than himself - glowing under the sunlight and with a beaming smile. He called out her name.
âYou got entertained easily, little floraâ He ruffled her brown hair gently as she glanced up. Rosy cheeks and a broader smile plastered for him to witness. Under his touch, she still felt like the little girl he had met. It doesnât matter if she ages up, she always would be Chanâs little flora. His flora that he would protect and care for until the end.
âWe donât live forever, Chan. So, I make sure every moment spent is exhilarating.â
âIâm glad you have that mindset. Should we start our painting session, Your Highness?â He offered his hand. She placed her hand on top of his palm - playing along. The easels were backing each other so there was no space for peeking at the otherâs artwork. Beside the easels, a table stood with a colour palette and a plate of creampuff. 3 stems of purple lilac were on the plate.
âOne question before we start. Why did you place the easels like this?â
âI want to keep our artwork as a surprise for each other. Weâll reveal it on my birthdayâ
âWhatever makes you happy, channieâ
Silence took over when their hands reached for the palette and brush. The low sound from the caressing brushes was barely heard because they thought deeply about what to draw. The first stroke - your first action - will determine the outcome.Â
Hours passed and the drawing began to take shape. Chan tilted his head to check up on her. With a brush on her right hand, she carefully placed black paint onto her canvas. Her eyebrows furrowed in concentration before continuing to paint. She probably didnât realise the smeared purple paint on her cheeks. He kept quiet because she was adorable with it.
âI have never seen you in a full dress beforeâÂ
âIâm not really into dresses. It limited my steps and most of my dresses were only for special occasions so I canât wear them daily,â she replied, not sparing any glances at Chan.
âWhat a bummerâŚâ he sighed and faced the canvas. He peeked at her once again before painting the features on his drawing.Â
âYou would look lovely and exquisite in one, little flora"
âIf you are that eager, how about you be my stepbrother?â she chuckled but deep inside, she meant it. If Chan were her brother, nothing would stop their relationship - they could have fun daily without anyone judging glare.
âI would scare everyone in the palace with my hideous wings thenâ
âWhat are you blabbering about, Chan?â She set the brush away and approached him. She ran her fingers through his wings. Despite what he said, she was always fond of his wings - it was the part of him that made him special. Chan stood up and pulled her into a hug as a gesture of thank you. Parting away, the breeze blew his dark hair along the sudden âthudâ behind them was heard. An arrow bulged on the side of Chanâs canvas that had fallen to the grass.Â
Chan yanked the arrow and untangled the tight-up paper on its shaft. Ripping the paper, a single line of words was written in red ink. He crumbled the paper and grabbed her hand. His indecipherable face caused curiosity to crawl into her.Â
âYou need to return now, little flora. They found meâ he said, voice oddly calm. Â
âWho did?â
âThem. Meet you tomorrow, safe rideâ He closed his eyes as black feathers began consuming her. She vanished when the feather turned into dust. Chan eyed the canvas, a contemplating sigh escape. He twirled his finger and all of the equipment entered his cottage. He unfolded his palm, the paper uncrumpled, revealing the sentence - the bigger threat is coming, better watch out.

The strong light blinded her as she sat up, pondering while looking around. Open flower fields filled with her mother's favourites. Why is she here? Why did Chan send her back? Despite the strong light, she could make out a silhouette at the gazebo far away - a fully dressed woman, rushing toward her.Â
âFlora? Where have you been?!âÂ
Oh, it was her mother, face worrying than ever. Her mother helped her stand up.Â
âI was walking around, reliving my childhood. You donât have to worry, Motherâ
âHow couldnât I? I asked anyone about your whereabouts and nobody saw you!âÂ
She took her motherâs hand into hers, lips resting into a tender smile. Sometimes chasing her freedom, she forgot the one who allowed her to experience it - her mother. Was it a selfish act? Lying to her queen to save Chan and herself from being punished? Her grip tightened, yet careful so she didnât hurt her.
âIâm sorry, mother.âÂ
âLetâs go inside. Father and Seungmin must be waiting for meâ Her mother nodded and they went inside the palace.Â

[later that night]
He threw the paper into the forked flame of the fireplace, watching it crumble into pieces and turn into ashes. His eyes were shut when a line of memory hit him, returning him to the past he wanted to forget. His wings wrapped around him as if they were comforting him. The scar that stretched across his right wing was visible under the fire.Â
âDid the fire remind you of that accident?â A deep, familiar voice spoke out from behind the chair.
âWhat are you doing here, Duncan?â He asked, clearly unwelcoming the guest of the night. A figure lurked out of the shadow - a tall man with a pair of wings similar to Chan. His wrinkly face was wearing a sinister grin, it was more like a mocking grin the more Chan stared at it. A modern suit fitted him, an expensive suit for a man like him. He must be out on another hunting.Â
âI heard from Minho that you made a new friend. The Stelious Princess, wasnât it? What a decision when youâre on the verge of death. The king already had threatened youâ
Chan faced him âYou would tell me that if you have an offer to make. Stop beating around bushes.â
Duncan chuckled âWork with us again and Iâll guarantee your safety. Besides, could you bear your siblings mourning over your death?â
Chanâs face remains stoic although Duncanâs words twisted his inside. Imagining it was enough to terrify him.Â
âSay yes, chan. You arenât risking your life for a strangerâ Duncan extended his hand in an inviting gesture, unfolded palm shoved in front of Chan. Chan wanted to take his hand but he stopped when a screeching scream rang in his ear. He hesitated, hand hovering over Duncanâs.
A train of memory winded in his head, and his hand instantly retreated. He questioned himself - do you want to experience the pain again? Do you want to be called a betrayer again?
âYour offer was sincere, Duncan but I say no. I can handle the king by myselfâ
âMinho will continue working with you. Iâm not capable of itâÂ
Duncan scoffed, turning around. âThen, all the best. Iâll be there if you change your mindâÂ
"We'll see how far you will go for that girl"

Outside the cottage, two fairies watched Chan through the window. They couldnât understand their discussion due to the distance they were in. The brunette fairy stood on the branches, holding the trunk to balance himself on the thin branch. He huffed. The forest was cornered with huge black thorns that grew from the ground. It will be difficult for someone to barge into the forest now.
âThat fairy caged us in here, Taehyun!â He sulked while he nibbled his sugar cube.
âItâs for our safety as well, Beomgyu. The king will kill us if he sees usâ
âButâŚâ
âAnother sulking from you and Iâll throw all of your sugar cubes, gyuâ
âFine!â

Her footsteps rang loudly in her ear as she headed toward her bedroom. The dim light from the candle in the hallway did less to brighten her path. As she took a step, the guilt from the dept of her heart escaped as the image of her mother flashed in her mind. How could she neglect her duty as a good daughter to her mother? Why did she realised it now?
âMake up your mind, Gale! Kill the fairy or Iâll execute your son!â
Her steps halted as well as her breath. She glanced beside her, instantly stepping back when she noticed it was the Kingâs office. The shadow on the floor shows how the king was grasping his hair in frustration.Â
âLocate the dark fairy. Weâll attack him as fast as possible. As long as heâs alive, our peopleâs safety is at riskâ
She covered her mouth with her hand as a gasp was let out. She hears her fatherâs words, nice and clear. Her heart dropped to the pit of his stomach at the realisation. Her father was the one who sent the arrow. She ran to her bedroom, slamming the door behind her.Â
Both males in the room jolted at the slam. The king felt unease so he perked his head outside his room. Only the night wind greeted him, causing his shoulder to slump forward. He was being paranoid for nothing. He slowly closed the door behind him.
âWhat was that, Your Highness?â
âIâm not sureâ
âI hope it wasnât Floraâ

"the world is cruel, but I still love you" | H.Hyunjin & Y.Jeongin

pairing: Hyunjin x Jeongin x fem!reader (skz x attack on titan au) word count: 2.9k words genre/s: slightly angst, fluff Summary: one month after the rumbling, everything started to return to normal. warning: there's a major spoiler of the ending here, death, alcohol, slight cursing, and too many references from aot a/n: I apologize for any grammar mistakes. Other than that, enjoy! I also write this just for fun. This event happened before Armin and the others returned to Paradis to tell their story. (I might or might not do a mood board for this story, tell me if you want one) Eren - Hyunjin, Mikasa - reader, Armin - Jeongin, Levi - Minho, Jean - Changbin, Conny - Felix, Hange - Jisung, Pieck - Seungmin, Erwin - Chan
He glanced ahead, and tears began forming on the edge of his eyes. He fell to his knee, his hand clenching the sand around him as a screeching scream broke out. Tears poured down, creating thousands of dots under him. Despite the strong burning mist swirling around him, he witnessed uncountable bodies being flattened by the titanâs feet and small silhouettes running away from the creatures heâd called out, their cries pierced through Hyunjinâs ear. He covered his ear as his heart pounded louder in his chest, he never wanted this. He just wanted to see the other side of the sea, and what living there would be like.Â
What had he done? From the day he was born, special wasnât something fitting for him. With such power, heâd destroyed everything from the beginning. How could the island believe in him? How could the scouts believe in him?Â
Why did the Titans exist in the first place? He wouldn't have suffered in this hell if it werenât for them. His mother, His father, Uncle Hannes, Captain Chan, Shasha and everyone else wouldnât have died.
Flames slowly devoured his hand and his grasp on his ear tightened until he felt something slipping through his finger.
âHyunjin!â
âY/N?? Jeongin??â His heart called out desperately, praying you would engulf him in your warmth again.
He blinked and his breath subsided to its normal tempo when he realised everything he saw was a figment of his overheated imagination, no it was rather a memory heâd live with now. The trauma stayed with him no matter how hard Jeongin tried to soothe him. It was easier to say than to be done. He exhaled a deep breath dripping with relief.Â
He folded his eyes as he shifted his weight over his arm, head facing the vastness of the universe. The nightâs air filled his lungs and the sounds of dancing grass around him rang in his ear, bringing a sense of peacefulness to him. Peace â how long had he been searching for this? He sacrificed everything and killed half of the human population for the sake of freedom outside of the walls â for the sake of his friendâs happiness and safety. It doesnât include that he nearly lost himself in the war, if he did, what would happen to them? To Jeongin? To you?
âHyunjin! Stop wandering out alone!â Somebody shouted, voice cracking and he heard heavy footsteps swiftly approaching him.
He opened his eyes and rapidly stood up. He was perching on the cliff that led to a camp placing all the survivors from the rumbling a month ago, so his action almost caused him to fall. You arrived in front of him, worry displayed on your countenance. Hyunjinâs heart wrenched in guilt as he took in your creased eyebrows and eyes brimming with crystal tears. It was the same expression he saw when he lied to you and Jeongin for the first time.Â
âIâm sorry, Y/N. I just want to clear my head from the memory.â He beamed a tender smile at you and fixed the loose scarf around your neck properly when the breeze blew over.Â
âTaking off alone without telling the scouts isnât a good idea either. Although there are no Titans, there are still enemies. I canât bear thinking of living without you and Jeongin.â You clenched the scarf as tears escaped. He stepped forward and hugged you, letting you cry in his chest. His hand caressed your hair and rested his other hand on your waist.Â
âIâm sorry for being such an asshole. Iâm sorry for making you and Jeongin worry. Iâm sorryââ He pulled you closer to his body.
âFor everything, Y/N.â
âHyunjin! Y/N! There you are!â A blonde-haired male jumped onto them, and a few giddy giggles escaped his lips. Hyunjin released his hand from your hair and wrapped it around the maleâs shoulder to balance himself. You hastily wiped the tears from your cheeks before the latter noticed.
âYou cried?! What happened!? Did Hyunjin say something mean to you again?âJeongin asked and he narrowed his eyes at Hyunjin, gaze piercing through Hyunjinâs eyes. Hyunjin gulped out of fear while shaking his head vigorously.
âHe didnât. I feel overwhelmed to see him, thatâs all. Iâm fine, Jeongin!â You released yourself from the hug and snapped your head to the side, hearing the other scouts shouting Hyunjinâs name.Â
âHey, what are you doing, Hyunjin!?â Changbin scowled and carefully climbed his way up to the trio's side. Felix trailed behind him, waving his hand toward them.
âOh! You guys made it just in time!â Someone exclaimed, causing everyone to recoil. Changbin had his arm up to defend his face while the sudden greeting stiffened otherâs shoulders. Only you remained composed and faced the voiceâs owner.
âOnyankopon! Itâs great to see youâÂ
Onyankopon raised the tray in his hand that held two cups of what seemed to contain tea, a slight grin on his face. The other stood on their toes to see what the male had brought with him. Changbin rushed to him, hooking his arm on Onyankoponâs neck while dragging him to the tarp site.
âLetâs get high tonight, buddy!â Changbin screamed in delight, receiving a shake from Felix. Felix glanced at Jeongin, cursing Changbinâs behaviour under his breath before pulling Jeongin with him, and running after Changbin.
âChangbin, donât be an idiot!â Felix groaned. You and Hyunjin exchanged a look. You quickly diverted your attention to the tarp site and parted away, burying your cheeks that began heating up in the scarf. Hyunjin chortled and chased you, swiftly intertwining his hand with yours when he arrived by your side.
âThatâs so not you, Y/N. Why are you running away?â Hyunjin teased, attempting to test the water yet you kept your head to the side, giving no chance to Hyunjin to observe your flushed cheeks. After minutes of silence that emitted an answer, he hummed in understanding and swung your hands while approaching Onyankoponâs tarp. The place was brimming with oil lamps from each tarp. The lamps were the sole light source in Marley for the time being, other sources had turned into ashes.Â
As you descend further, delightful giggles echo in your ear. You halted and your finger released itself from Hyunjinâs. You spun to the source and saw a familiar scene across from you. Three kids -- 2 boys and a girl, were standing by an imaginary start line. The boy with black hair grinned at his two other friends and ran to the tree opposite them before the blonde-haired boy finished his countdown. That boy seemed so much shorter than them, like Jeongin. The girl fastened her pace, leaving the short boy struggling to keep up with their speed.Â
Their clothes blew in the gentle night breeze. As expected, the black-haired boy arrived first with a winning fist high in the air, his chest raising rapidly as he regained his breath. The girl came in second and the last one was the smallest out of them all. They had their hands resting on the tree, exchanging wide smiles. The blonde-haired boy quickly scolded the other boy for not keeping his promise.
And then, they glanced at you. Your breath hitched in your throat as realisation sunk in. They were you, Hyunjin and Jeongin. You felt tears threatening to build again only to stop when a gentle hand grasped your shoulder. You peeked behind you â it was Jeongin.
âWhat are you watching? Everyone is waiting for youâÂ
You looked back at the field and there was no one there. Was it your imagination?
âAre you okay, Y/N?â Jeongin shook your shoulder, noticing you were taken aback by what you saw earlier.
âOhâ Iâm okay. Letâs goâ
You and Jeongin arrived at Onyankoponâs tarp and Changbin had already begun feasting on the meal that Onyankopon had prepared for the scouts. You sat beside Hyunjin and Jeongin settled beside you. He took a glass filled to the brim, chugging the content in one go. He hummed in satisfaction before handing the glass to Felix, asking for more.
You took a slice of cake and put it on Hyunjinâs plate. He tilted his head at you.
âYou need a lot of food to recover, Hyunjin. You have to eat and stay alive.â
âRecover from what? I didnât hurt myselfââ You shoved the cake into his mouth before he could fully reply to you. His cheeks were chubby due to the cake yet he tried hard to complete his sentence, causing you to giggle at his vain attempt. Your laugh brought ease to Hyunjinâs heart. Did he deserve to make you happy like you are right now?
The night went on and the tent slowly turned messy after a drunk Changbin challenged Felix to a wrestling battle while Jeongin invited other survivors to join them for their small dinner. Loud laughter and chatter replenished the silent night until past midnight when most of them had passed out from consuming too many foods and drinks as if there were no tomorrow.Â
Minho raised his lantern to his chest as his face furrowed in disapproval. The tent was dark, what a hassle to search for them.
âShit, this is much worse than the previous one.â He scowled and pushed his wheelchair deeper into the tarp and his nose scrunched up at the reeked alcohol and the smell of food wastes mingling in the air. He moved the lantern to his side. All of his scouts were there, scattered in the corner.Â
âDamn, these kids never give us a break donât they, captain?â Someone cooed beside Minho and he whipped his head to his side, eyes widened. Out of his consciousness, his body jolted to his right, making him lose balance but that figure quickly grabbed his arm.Â
âWhat the hell are you doing here, four-eyes freak?â
âHey, thatâs not how you greet your dearest friend, Minho. It shouldn't have been a little nice. Say, didnât you miss me?âÂ
âI'd rather burn in hell than say that to you, Jisung.â
Jisung booed him and looked at the kids. His cheeky grin fell into a thin line. âHow is he doing? Is he coping everything well?â
Minho trailed his gaze to Jisungâs direction. Hyunjin was sleeping between you and Jeongin, his arms wrapped securely on your and Jeonginâs shoulder. Minho shrugged his shoulder and kicked Changbinâs leg that was under him.
âEnough with the small talk. Help me carry the kids to the ship.â
âDid you miss Jisung that much?âÂ
Minho raised his head and met with Seungmin. Up until today, Seungmin had a hard time deciphering Minhoâs emotions but currently, he could see devastation and confusion written on his face. Minho sighed and massaged his temple. He imagined about Jisung again.
âAm I going insane like Hyunjin did before the rumbling? That moron is getting into my head.â
âItâs not a sin to admit you miss someone. You had to sacrifice many souls to be here today, those souls including your friends. I miss my friends too. My dad said missing someone means you keep them in your heart.â Seungmin uttered softly and flashed a small smile to Minho.
âIâm still pissed off, cart head. You are the only reason I couldnât kill Zeke in our first encounterâ
Seungmin chuckled âCome on, captain! Leave the past behind, I donât possess the cart-titan ability anymore. Besides, you still manage to kill Zeke.â
Their conversation died down when Onyankopon approached them. He gasped when he registered the view in front of him.Â
âIâm sorry!! I think I might give them too much drinkâ He grinned, rubbing the back of his neck as his face reddened. Seungmin waved his apology off, saying it was fine for them to have fun.
âLetâs get them onto the ship. We are going to Paradis tonightâ
âWhy not stay here for the night?â Onyankopon asked
âI donât want to disturb anyone with our presenceâ
-----
Hyunjin woke up from his deep slumber. He sat while cradling his aching head. His head begged him to go back to sleep but his heart wanted the otherwise. He observed his new surroundings. The room was small with a bunk bed and a low light shone through the window. Oh, he was on a ship?
He carefully climbed down from his bed and noticed you were sleeping under him. He leaned in and the moonlight slipped in, helping him to see your face. He admired how soft your features were when you were sleeping but it was the opposite when you were awake. He tugged the stray hairs behind your ear before kissing your forehead. He exited the room and walked to the shipâs deck, resting his arm against the railing.
Meanwhile, you jolted from your sleep and panicked when Hyunjin was nowhere to be seen. You got out of your bed and rushed outside of the room. A sigh of relief escaped after you saw Hyunjin chilling on the deck. You approached him.
âI thought you were my other figmentâ You mumbled
âY/N, Iâm alive and standing in front of you. Youâre not dreamingâ
âI know but itâs difficult to believe it. I sliced your head off and I swear I didnât feel any breathing coming from you. I held your head in my palm, Hyunjin. It doesnât make any sense.â
Hyunjin faced you and gently held your arm.
âWe live in a life where nothing makes senseâ
âBut how are you alive now?â
âI guess Ymir had a change of heart because of you. She needs proof that someone like her doesnât exist. After 2000 years, you appeared. Maybe she doesnât want someone else to experience what she did thus she brought me back to life. We'll never know her intention, Y/N.â
âMhmmm, something is missing. Whereâs your scarf?â
You just realised your neck felt exposed to the wind. Hyunjin immediately went to the room and returned with the red scarf that once belonged to him. He wrapped the scarf around you and smiled.Â
âThank you for wrapping this scarf around me, Hyunjin,â You said, words lacing with sincerity from the deepest part of your heart while tugging the scarf down to your chin.
âI would wrap it around you as many as you want, now and foreverâÂ
You nodded and reached for his long hair that began covering his eyes, caressing his hair tenderly. âYour hair is getting longer. Can I cut it?â
His eyes glimmered in excitement as he pulled a pair of scissors from his pocket. âI was thinking the same too! Thatâs why I bring the scissors with me.â
He handed the item and sat on the floor, facing the sea. His feet bounced as a child would when they got their favourite toy. You kneeled behind him and started to cut his hair.Â
âI adore you a lot, Y/N. I love youâ He muttered. He hid his face into his knee, embarrassed by how he blurred that precious word easily. His face felt hot against his skin when he realised you probably didnât hear his confession.Â
âRaise your head!âÂ
âSorry madam!â He returned to his original position, pressing his lips to appear calm despite his reddish face. You grabbed a handful of his hair and ran the sharp edge through his hair.
âDo you remember when you said to throw away this scarf when you die?â
He hummed âThat is the best way to forget meâ
You set the scissors on the floor and cleaned the remaining hair on his collar.
âYou really had the guts to say that. Why would I forget you?â
âIâm a child of evil, Iâm a monster. A monster doesnât deserve apologies moreover to be in someoneâs memories. Everyone should forget me.â
âNo, youâre a victimâŚâ
Loud footsteps echoed behind you and before you could identify the silhouette, Hyunjin had fallen to the floor with someone clinging to his neck, hugging him tightly.
âI thought I was dreaming!â Jeongin sniffed on Hyunjinâs shoulder. His body trembled as another cry was let out. Hyunjin chuckled and ruffled his hair.
âYouâre not, innie! Iâm here with both of you!â
Hyunjinâs gaze softened as he rubbed the tears off with the back of his hand. Jeongin retreated and helped Hyunjin to sit. He sniffed for the last time and erased the stain on his face using his sleeve.Â
âIâm glad we could witness the sea together properlyâ His eyes were shut as he smiled widely at you and Hyunjin. You couldnât help but follow his action.Â
âNo matter how far you look, it stretches past the horizonâ You can truly admit that the real Hyunjin has returned. The three of you finally reunited again, which couldnât make you any happier. To live with them in peace; was Hyunjinâs wish for the longest time.
âI love you guys, thank you for not giving up! Oh, Y/N. Did you know that Hyunjin is afraid of you living with another man other than him?â Jeongin grinned and Hyunjinâs face turned even redder at the statement.Â
âInnie! Donât tell her!â
âI have another one!â
âNo! Just shut your damn mouth!â
Behind a closed door, someone leaned on the wall, silently listening to the trioâs conversation.Â
âChan, Jisung if youâre listening, Hyunjin will be fine with them. Iâm not saying this so you could rest in peace, but Iâm sure of it. That idiot wouldnât pull anything as long as Y/N and Jeongin are safeâ
Minho placed a clenched fist on his heart as he saw figments of Jisung and Chan ahead of him.
âThank you for everything, captainâ

[2 days later]Â
He flipped through the pages and was ready to begin another story until a knock on the front door tore his gaze away. He placed the book on the small table and headed for it, hoping it was him. Opening the door, he met face-by-face with a brown paper grocery bag and white transparent wings flapping a gentle wind to him. The figure behind it tilted his head, and his smile stretched from cheek to cheek. Tailing him were a bunch of rabbits, their little hand gripping the paper bag, while on the curly blonde boy rested a white dove, glancing at Chan with narrowing eyes.
âYou bring a little company, Taehyunâ Chan uttered, voice slightly low unlike how he usually greeted Taehyun.
âYep, I hope you donât mind Chan. Need an extra hand and these little buddies come into rescue.â
Taehyun chuckled, walking toward the kitchen counter after Chan permitted him to enter.
Chan darted his eyes at the blonde boy. Crouching down to the rabbits, Taehyun thanked them. Envious and anxiety dominated Chan in silence.
âI'm always jealous of you because youâre so approachable, Hyunâ Chan spoke, a hint of disappointment in his voice
He perked his head up, lips turned thin at the remark. Taehyun stood up with a rabbit sitting on his open palm. He approached Chan, gesturing for Chan to take the rabbit from him. Chan did as he told and the rabbit jumped to Chanâs hand. Itâd looked at Chan with its wide black eyes before flashing a smile at him. The fairy was speechless for a moment. He sat on the floor, putting the small fluffy animal on his lap and patted him.
"They approach a pure soul despite their look. Try leaving the cottage and I'm sure thousands of animals will come to you. Animals arenât like humans, Chan. They judge someone from the soul, not the appearance."
âThank you, Taehyun. Both for the grocery and the comforting wordsâ
âChann-â
Both boysâ heads snapped at the sudden voice. Y/Nâs eyes trailed to the sight of Chan playing with the rabbit - a sight that warmed her heart. At least, the animals arenât afraid of him so he has company when she is away.
âOh, hi! Who are you? Are you Chanâs friend?â
âIndeed, I am. Youâre Princess Flora, arenât you?â
âYes. I was taking something from Chan. Iâll be leavingâ
She gave Chan a quick hug and exchanged a smile with Taehyun. Chan waved her goodbye.
After Y/N left, the animals left too. A once brimming countenance changed into a worried one, Taehyunâs brown at unease motion.
âWhy is the princess here, Chan?â
âI met her 10 years ago at my momâs place and somehow the friendship was born. I love to have her around, she makes me look forward to upcoming days. With her around, I felt like I had a little sister.â
Taehyun sighed, messaging his forehead with both thumbs. Chan has opened his heart to someone - thatâs a relief - but never came a thought that someone was the princess. To make matters worse, her father was hunting the fairies down. He pondered how to tell him about the news he was supposed to say minutes ago. Should he tell him the cold truth or cover it with nice words? Lying sometimes wouldnât hurtâŚright?
âTell me whatâs on your mind, Taehyun. I can tell from your face that my action will get me killedâ
âEXACTLY! Chan, please tell me you expected the consequenceâ
He nodded
âThen, I wouldnât feel guilty delivering this news to you. The king had begun a search for you. Unfortunately, they expanded the search to the forest. You need to be careful. You only live once, Chan. Don't let your heart kill you"
Chan hummed and replied with a dry thanks to him. In the circumstances, nothing could change if they advised him now. Things would change if they did it in the past.
âSince youâre here, would you go with me to the town? I want to buy some flowers for herâ
âYou must be joking with me, Chan. Are you out of your mind?! I told you about the search a second ago and you already made an imprudent decision?âÂ
Chan has lost his mind - Taehyunâs mind came to a quick conclusion. The one he cared for was mature and wouldnât let his feelings decide the matter. Did everything change because of the princess? The princess must have changed his life, leading him to make such decisions.
âThey have never seen my face, Taehyun. Iâm sure they donât know it is me. After all, I got nothing to lose in my lifeâ
âCanât I buy it for you? Itâs less risky.â
âTaehyun, just this time. You helped me so much, hyun. You helped me find my parent's cottage back when I had no home. This time let me do it by myself" â He pleaded.
Being the soft-hearted friend that he is, Taehyun agreed. He snapped his fingers twice and their wings disappeared under the raining dust. They exited the cottage, unaware of the small fairy watching them from the window sill, nibbling on his sugar cube - a sugar cube twice his size. His eyes gleamed with excitement and curiosity as he saw a letter slipped under the oak door.
âThis is gonna be exciting!!â

Stepping into the town without tomato chunks and juice on his face was unusual. Right, he received that greeting if he was with his parents - which lasted when he was 5.
Horses with carriages pass non-stop on the cobblestone path. They were sending out folk's groceries or continuing their journey past the huge silver gate. It was the busiest part of the day for Stellious. Rows of cobblestone houses lined from both of their sides. Some of them were left unpainted. Taehyun grabbed Chanâs arm, pulling him toward a florist shop.
True enough, the king was searching for him. Wanted posters of him scattered all around the city lamp post. Luckily, his picture wasnât included. A wave of relief washed over him- for a moment. Glancing at the flowers displayed, he immediately asked the owner to wrap a bouquet of purple lilac for him.
âHere he is!!â A voice rang through the shop, a loud shout that managed to attract everyone wandering nearby. Chan gave a quick glimpse to Taehyun. The bouquet exchanged hands. Chan dragged the man out of the store to the alleyway, ignoring the looks the folk gave them. He held the man by the shoulder, slamming him to the wall.
His grey eyes glowed as he stared at the manâs eyes. Soon, he let go of the man and left him. The old man rushed out after that. Taehyuâs brow furrowed.
âI changed our encounter into an awkward one in his memory.â
âYou could do that?! What else have you been hiding from me?â Taehyun whispered, surprised.
âA lot, Taehyun. Letâs go back before the other finds meâ
âI warned you, Chan. If they saw you out here, Iâm scared they would chase after you.â

The prince stepped inside the garden with his guard, the moist air after the rain filled his lungs, helping him to calm down his nervousness of meeting with the princess. After countless tries, he finally could meet the sole heir of Stellious. The guard motioned his hand to one of the gazebo that someone occupied. The girl sipped her tea while she stared at the dancing butterflies across her.Â
The prince had asked the guard to stay where he was and he approached the girl, each of his steps felt difficult for him. He halted before he arrived and took a deep breath before calling out to the princess.
âPrincess Flora?â
The girl spun her head as she placed the cup away. The gentle breeze blew strands of her hair away, allowing the Prince to fully observe the otherâs face. Her eyes were sparkling as if reflecting the soft morningâs light. His heart had lost its original rhythm as his eyes laid on her. There was no doubt what the Stelliousâs citizen told about their princessâs beauty.
âOh, Prince Seungmin. Please to meet you, have a seat.â
And Seungmin did. She poured the tea into the empty cup and continued drinking. Seungmin licked his lips out of habit and glanced at her. Her attention seemed to linger on the insects and flowers, never once on him.Â
âHey, itâs my first time meeting you. Can we know about each other a bit?â
âI believe that is not necessary. Whether I know you or not, Iâm still going to get married to you.â
The evening went on with silence hanging in the air. Seungmin couldnât find a way to start a talk after what she had said, every word he attempted to speak beginning to form a lump in his throat. She glanced at Seungmin and abruptly stood up.
âIâm afraid thatâs all the time I have today for you. Iâll be leaving.â She bowed and without sparing another glance at him, exited the garden. He sighed with his head hung low. This is going to be difficult.
âWill I be able to talk to her at this state?â
