Kai got his scar while taking a punishment meant for Nya by their caregivers at the time.

Their caregivers made Kai dye his hair black which darkened his natural reddish brown hair when he stopped dyeing it

Nya and him are a matching set, because of the way they grow up is easy for them to communicate with just sounds and gestures

Nya insists on having the same haircolor as Kai

There's also a plot point where Kai civilian self is obviously morally gray but it flies over Cole's head because he has a crush
