“are you awake?” you asked softly.

maybe it was the fact that jay was tired out of his mind, maybe it was the fact that he was already half asleep, or maybe it was simply the fact that he absolutely loves the feeling of you snuggling close against him. either way, jay decided to not make an effort to respond to your question, savouring the warmth of you wrapped securely in his embrace.

“jay?” you asked again, lightly tapping on his chest. you know that it had been a really long day for him, so you didn’t want to wake him up if his exhaustion had taken over.

when he didn’t respond the second time, you took that as a sign that he was asleep.

you sighed contentedly, gently resting your cheek on his chest. a small smile appeared on your face as you admired him in his peaceful sleeping state, taking in his soothing scent as you felt the calming rise and fall of his chest.

it wasn’t everyday that you got to spend time alone with him due to the hectic schedule he has as an idol. despite it all, jay always seems to be able to find time for you, making sure that each and every moment you spend together is worthwhile. this is why he always has something planned, whether that is taking you out on dates to the nearby cafe, a fun night at the arcade, or a cosy stay at home movie date. he always makes sure to treasure the precious time he gets with you.

today, however, was an exception.

he was completely worn out by the numerous late night practises he had in the past week, staying up until early hours in the morning practising the same strenuous dance moves over and over again. his body was so sore that he could barely move a muscle, and what is a better remedy than hugging you tightly while he dozes off into dreamland?

you continue to stare at jay, gently brushing past a few strands of his soft hair to get a better view of his face. how does he look so good even when he’s asleep? and how does he still give you butterflies and make your heart flutter even after so long?

absentmindedly, you reached out to poke at his cheeks, pinching them ever so slightly and letting out a soft laugh at how adorable he looked. pressing your palms on either side of his face, you gently but effectively squished his cheeks together, making his lips form a small pout.

“you look cute,” you mumbled, letting out a soft chuckle at the sight of jay pouting. you suppressed another laugh as you continued to mould his face into various expressions.

to your surprise, the corners of jay’s mouth twitched up ever so slightly, and you realised that you weren’t the only one who was trying hard not to laugh.

“you know what?” you said with a cheeky smile. even though your voice was barely a whisper, you were certain that he was listening. “you’re so handsome, like seriously, seriously, so good looking,” you continued, gently tugging at the corners of his mouth and bringing his lips up into a smile, “and your smile? it’s the most beautiful thing ever.”

that did the trick.

jay couldn’t hold it in anymore, his lips breaking into a wide smile, a low chuckle leaving his lips, “you knew i was awake, didn’t you?”

you burst out in laughter, carrying on to squish his cheeks together, “you’re really bad at acting, you know?”

“well, at least you think i’m cute,” jay said with a smug smirk plastered on his face.

“i only think you’re cute on rare occasions,” you replied in a teasing tone, “you’re only average at best.”

“oh really?” jay asked jokingly, “if so, then why are you hugging me so tightly that my legs are starting to go numb?”

even though you knew that he meant it as a joke, you suddenly became aware that you have been lying on top of him for quite some time now and his body must feel even worse with you crushing him under your weight. so you instinctively propped yourself up, attempting to relieve the extra weight on his sore muscles.

but before you could lift your lower half off of him, his arms immediately wrapped tightly around your waist, tugging you back down into his embrace.

“you’re crushing me, but don’t go anywhere,” jay said, his cheeks burn red for a quick second, and you were able to catch a glimpse at his flustered expression.

you usually would have teased him for blushing, but perhaps it was because you hadn’t seen him for the past week, you decided to press a light kiss on his cheek instead, nuzzling your face against his shoulder.

“did you mean it?” jay asked so softly that you wondered if he meant to ask the question out loud.

“mean what?”

“what you said about my smile.”

you paused for a second, there was something unusual in the tone of his voice. he sounded more vulnerable than usual, as if he thought that what you said was simply a spur of the moment decision, that you merely said it to make him flustered and not because you genuinely meant it.

“jay,” you said with an affectionate smile, cupping one side of his face so his eyes would meet yours, “of course i meant it. your smile is the most beautiful thing ever.”

jay felt his heart flutter at your response, immediately burying his face into the crook of your neck in embarrassment as heat rose up to his cheeks.

“why do you do this to me?” jay mumbled into your shoulder.

“what? i’m only telling the truth,” you said, running your fingers through his soft hair before placing a chaste kiss on his forehead, “you’re the prettiest when you smile.”
