"[...] Tanwin took a dangerous step closer, Darian fought the urge that told every muscle in his body to jump back at the stone-cold look on his friend’s face, despite knowing they would never hurt one another.

“Hope is a lie.” The elf hissed, tilting his head as he stared down the alchemist, gesturing around him accusatorily “Fed to us by those who want to keep us weak, who want us to believe in fantasies instead of the truth. And the truth.” His face grew somber “Is that, in this world, only those strongest, those of us willing to do what others are too cowardly to do, are the ones who might have the slightest chance of surviving."

"We both know that's not entirely true, Tanwin. I know you don't - " Darian began, trying to convince his friend, but the young elf only scoffed, sharply interrupting him and moving to walk away.

"Well, people change, Darian. And I think it's time you did too." Tanwin said, pausing for a moment, voice becoming - ever so slightly - softer, a glimpse of the person he used to be, though holding a warning edge "Grow up. Before you get hurt - because if you don't, it will be too late." [...]

This is also a bit of the context for one of the lines (the second one) on my "Last Sentence Tag Game" post from yesterday! (This post right here). And yes, there are more than 9 lines in this snippet, but it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

Myrah opened her mouth to say something, but Cyprian continued before she could speak a single word. “Look, Myrah, if you want to continue on this path, that’s… fine, I guess. But I won’t follow you down this road.”  He turned walking further away into the woods, arms still wrapped around his chest. “I’m leaving by sunrise. This is my choice, you’ve made yours.” Myrah stood there, shocked, as her friend walked out of sight yet again. She didn’t know if she should follow him, or try to get him to change his mind, but a part of her knew that Cyprian was never one to be convinced of anything once he set his mind to something.  With a shake of her head, she retreated back to where her team was gathered, leaving a faint trail of withered grass in her wake.
