I Saw Your Clickbait Title (thanks For Joining That Game Btw!!) And Scrapyard Boys Was So Interesting
i saw your clickbait title (thanks for joining that game btw!!) and scrapyard boys was so interesting to me! care to share some lore/fun facts/general info?
Thank you for the ask, @the-letterbox-archives!!!!! That tag game was really fun, I'm glad you made it! I love to ramble about my WIPs, and Scrapyard Boys is one of my current favorites, so here we go!
Scrapyard Boys is a cyberpunk, futuristic superhero story! It started out as a spin-off of my other WIP Mutant Inquiries, and while it indeed takes place in the same world/setting as that story, it has long since become its own thing.
The plot takes place in a main city called New Omnium, which is on the one hand the heart of the cybertech developments in the country but also a very lawless and dangerous place to live in, with a lot of inequality and prejudice running amok deep in the city. For lack of a better way to describe it quickly, New Omnium is pretty much like a cyberpunk version of Gotham City but even more lawless. In this futuristic world, mutant superpowers have "mysteriously" - or so most think - become widespread in the population of this country many years ago, and are now a part of daily life and another reason for conflicts within its population. The big techs and corporations have long since started to profit from this, and with the help of the government, superhero Agencies (and a training Academy for mutant youths) were established to turn "the best of the best" of the city's mutants into supersoldiers. The main branch of these kinds of agencies, Spectre Agency and the Spectre Academy, are vastly sponsored by the city's PHANTOM Industries - a big cyberpharmaceutical company.
Despite most of the population looking up to the superhero teams that come out of these Agencies and Academies, these places hide a dark, and cruel secret as to how they turn unsuspecting mutant teenagers into these lethal supersoldiers. A good portion of the mutant youths that live on the streets of New Omnium dread being caught and sent to the Spectre Academy - because those who are either are not seen again or come out completely changed. Still, due to a massive governmental and media effort, most of the general population adores Spectre and have no clue what is truly going on within.
The main plot follows Valen Cassidy, a young runaway mutant with electrical powers who has become quite a nuisance to the city's government, and his equally chaotic friend group (composed of other downtrodden mutant street kids). Valen was the son of a genius investigative journalist who was trying to discover what the government and those big companies were hiding, but after she was killed, he was almost sent to one of Spectre's training facilities. But instead, Valen managed to escape the agents sent to bring him there, and ran away from the government, using his dangerous powers to rebel while trying to finish his mother's investigation.
Some of the other main characters include:
Luke Katt: An angry and often violent teenager with a heart of gold, who was sent to juvenile prison after killing his abusive godfather. He escaped containment a few years after to rescue his little brother, Riley, and after being reunited the two ran away to the streets, now free, eventually meeting Valen. Luke becomes Valen's best and most loyal friend. Luke's powers are Healing, Wound Generation, and Regeneration.
Saoirse Richards: The daughter of a foreign doctor and bioengineer who ended up mysteriously killed in a fire, Saoirse escaped from facing a similar fate that day, and now is determined to find out who started the fire on her father's lab. She is a close friend of both Luke and Valen. Her powers are Telekinesis, Psionic Blast Generation, and Force Field Generation.
Gwyn & Rhys Whitewood: Twins, they ended up in one of the Spectre Academy's secret labs after accidentally developing mutant powers after coming in contact with a chemical leak. After three years in captivity, the twins managed to escape and fled to the city of New Omnium, where they were reunited with their half-brother, Adrien Rosetrom, who didn't know they were alive until then. Gwyn was a childhood acquaintance of Saoirse. The twin's powers are: Ice Manipulation, Frost Generation, and Cold Water Manipulation.
Emily & Quince Warren: Younger sister and older brother, Emily and Quince were the niece and nephew of the man who once was the city's most beloved superhero, known as Magmatorch, the two rich siblings had their reality shattered after discovering the bleak truth behind the Spectre Agency's perfect front, and after their uncle went suspiciously MIA, they were made targets by the government as well, and managed to run away just in time. Emily's powers are Combustion and Explosion Generation, and Quince's powers are Blood Manipulation plus Heat Manipulation.
Erin Sterlern: Another runaway, Erin ended up stumbling across a conspiracy after invading a crime scene to investigate the truth behind her foster cousin's suspicious disappearance. Despite not being very close to him and not having the best relationship, Erin swore to find out who kidnapped him and eventually found evidence that the PHANTOM Industries were involved. She ran away from home to prevent her uncle and aunt from becoming targets of the government while she investigated the matter further. Erin doesn't have any powers, but lately, she has started to have strange, cryptic dreams, almost like premonitions.
Josh Aleta: Erin's adoptive/foster cousin, Josh was a brash, often rude, and extremely rebellious teenager with anger issues, a standard angsty 17-year-old, soon to be 18, but he ended up kidnapped by the PHANTOM Industries after witnessing something he was not supposed to, and being set up by his so-called "friends." His disappearance is one of the many mysteries of this story, and though he later escapes, he is very much not the same afterward. His powers are Fear/Nightmare Manipulation/Generation.
Kay Rodriguez: A genuinely upstanding teen living with his mother and father, Kay ends up roped into the chaotic shenanigans of the main cast after deciding to help them out of a dangerous situation. He has a kind heart and a generally no-nonsense attitude to life, and though he never had many friends, Kay never really minded it. He becomes a close friend of the main cast though. His powers are Plant Generation/Plant Manipulation and mild Geo Manipulation (earth powers).

"What are you doing out here?" Cassiopeia stood by the metal staircase leading to the glass-domed hangar of the ship, at the center of which Meridian was sitting, staring through it at the starry cosmos above and around them in wonder.
The robot replied, dejected, but not tearing their eyes away from the sight before them, "Couldn't sleep."
Cassie began walking down the stairs, her fluffy slippers squeaking on the smooth floor, and cocked an eyebrow at the robot's peculiar answer, "... Do sentient robots sleep?" She asked, hesitantly, as if afraid to come across as rude or ignorant, "I didn't know that."
Meridian hummed, a whirring, metallic sound that somewhat sounded like a kitten's purr, "Not really. A robot can turn itself - uh" The robot stopped himself at the slip up, looking at their hands for a moment, shaking their head, before correcting the mistake "-themself off like a computer or a machine. But its not really like human sleeping. Lately I've been trying because, maybe, with some practice, I can learn to sleep the human way. I'd like that."
From where she was standing, coming ever closer to her friend, she noticed the robot's sheepish, slightly hopeless smile as they declared the forlorn, guileless plan they intended to put into practice. The sheer sadness of what this meant took her off guard, so much so that, for a moment, Cassie didn't know what to say.
She sat down beside them, shaking her mind back to the present and gave them a kind smile in return, "Well... trying is a good start!" The girl began, looking up at the stars as well as she wrung her hands anxiously. A thought crossed her mind, and she voiced it out loud, "Hm. Maybe I could research some ways to rewire your systems, safely, so we can figure out together a way to help you do human stuff like sleeping." She chewed on her lip, "If you'd like my help."
At that, Meridian gasped, finally looking at her, eyes practically glowing with happiness, "Oh. For real? You... you really think it could work?" Their voice, albeit synthetic and mechanic, was filled with the most hope and wonder she'd ever heard in her life.
She couldn't help but feel the same as she answered, "Well, only one way to find out!" The young inventor said with a bright, optimistic smile. If she was being completely honest, she didn't actually know if it could be done - but she was certainly going to try.
