i know its the mets, but this is the coolest shit i’ve ever seen a human being do
Halloween Film Frightstival Day 1: Candyman (1992)

I can tell why this is a classic and I appreciate that it doesn’t overuse blood, jumps, and screams to get its scares (not that those are bad, just that a “what’s real/what’s not” vibe works well too)
There’s obviously themes of race which I was a bit worried about at the beginning (90s horror movie talking about the “ghetto” seems potentially problematic at first, especially since the writers/directors/producers were majority white) but I was happy to be proven wrong. I’m no film scholar and I’m definitely not an expert in portrayals of Black people, but I felt like I noticed a subversion of tropes like the white savior.
Also HOLY FUCK, THE BEES!!! That was so fucking cool that I started reading the wikipedia page to learn about the production and apparently Virginia Madsen was severely allergic to bee stings and she still filmed that scene?? And Tony Todd negotiated a $1,000 bonus for every time he was stung ($23,000 total) which is honestly king shit
Okay now don’t laugh at me for this, but why did the second act remind me so much of The Haunted Mansion? Who knew “I’m a ghost and you’re actually my dead wife” was such a common plot? I also sensed that they maybe meant for that to be a twist but I was eight steps ahead and guessed that much earlier than the reveal
Additional don’t laugh at me: the characterization of the Candyman was a little camp, no? Just a bit?
Anyway, good film 👍 it feels like one I’d need to watch more than once to get the most out of it
