I honestly expected Cas to snap sooner than he did, and not in the hands-on way he did. His self-control most of the time is epic, but twisting a bitch knife in his feels while wearing the corpse of his recently murdered son was next-level provocation. I wasn't sure Cas was coming back from this.

15.03 The Rupture

Well that bit got seared into my brain. It's a powerful moment, and all the more so because Dean's stopped being afraid of Cas by this point - needled him without hesitation throughout the episode, not expecting anything worse than a dirty look in return. I wasn't expecting it to end in a one-sided brawl in an alleyway, nor with Cas articulating the reasons for his anger.

They established very early on that Cas can develop human emotions, that his contact with humanity through Dean brings that out in him, but the fury and violence he shows here aren't newfound Earth-feels that Cas doesn't yet know how to parse. Nor is the terrified doubt behind his accusation. Nor is the incredible self restraint that finally stops him once Dean's incapacitated on the floor.

I live for brilliantly played TV scenes like this one.

No great revelation that this ep was one of the ones that grabbed my by the fanfic inspiration. I'm a sucker for an in-universe AU that's even more messed up than the main universe. I bet there's tons of fanfic written about The End, and I can't wait to read some. Maybe write some, if I don't go too deep and end up drowning.
