andre tutoring cal.

andre’s always been a genius, at least that’s what cal says. he excels in math and science as well as english and history, an almost impossible feat. in middle school and freshman and sophomore year, he tutored people constantly. the amount of seniors he tutored as an underclassman was actually hilarious.

around junior year, when he got into varsity track and started hating people a lot more, he only tutored a couple people. when he became a senior and the plan for zero day came along, he abandoned tutoring all together.

except for cal.

they’d do flash cards in his car, sometimes at the park and sometimes in the school parking lot 30 minutes before the bell rang. at nights, they’d sit at the dinner table and work through problems together. when andre was really busy or simply fucking exhausted, he just handed his papers over to cal so he could copy them.

cal got him in trouble one time. he’d copied an essay word for word. andre almost smacked him that day, claiming that he almost got a zero. good thing his teacher liked him enough and gave him a grace period to write another essay.

cal uses andre’s intelligence all the time. andre would care if it was somebody else, but he can’t be mad for too long with cal.

his brother taught him when he was little, back when they still got along. young andre would always come home with bloodied knees and scratched up palms. he fell more times that he’d ever admit as he’s to proud of admit to failure.

now, he skates around town. he would skate all the time if he wasn’t pushed by his parents to drive his car and he didn’t have to take cal to school and basically everywhere in town. when he has free time, he’ll skate down the streets by his house or near the abandoned park in new stratford that used to overflow with kids.

there’s a difference between skating and everything else. when andre runs, he imagines he’s running from something or someone. when he’s driving, he’s always thinking about the next turn and the time between him and his destination. when he skates, though, there’s nothing in his mind.

he’s not going anywhere. he’s not escaping from something. he’s just moving. it’s rare that his mind isn’t roaring with worries, plans, and thoughts. times like this, when nothing is bothering him other than a bit of cold wind in his face, are andre’s favorite parts of life.

thinking of young andre who grew up in a house that speaks almost purely german and nothing else. on his first day of kindergarten, he walks in to kids talking and laughing with each other. he knows basic phrases and questions, of course, but even then, his voice is laced in a thick accent like his father. laughs follow his every word, and he sits alone at recess. books pile up next to his bed as he begs his parents and brother to read to him in english every night. he feels like he’s so far behind and will never catch up.

cal crushes on people constantly. andre takes months or even longer to get the slightest bit of romantic feelings for someone.

when they were younger, cal would ask him if he liked anyone and would get so upset when andre said no. he thought andre was flat out lying to him. it took forever for him to understand that andre was being genuine. he didn’t like anyone. when he does, though, cal jumps up and down and forces andre to talk to them.
