Oh that part wasn’t propoganda. Bat ponies were around long before Nightmare Moon, but were never considered one of the pony tribes because they were these “terrifying undead creatures of darkness that gobbled up innocent little ponies”. Bat ponies have slit eyes and sharp teeth: the trademarks of many predators, so it was easy for old pony tales to turn bats into evil vampires or murderers. Because of fear and paranoia, bat ponies were actively hunted and killed. Many bat pony colonies fled to the mountains and forests to avoid the pegasi, unicorns, and earth ponies, and life just kinda continued like that for a while. After Nightmare Moon took over, bat ponies were integrated into society, and now the rumors surrounding them have mostly been dispelled. Interbreeding over the years has lead to it being relatively common for a pony to have some drop of bat blood in their veins which is why many Equestrians have the ribbed ears, fangs, or naturally slit eyes.

In this universe, there are three different types of bat ponies: herbivores, omnivores, and sanguinivores (the rarest of the three). Herbivores were the most readily accepted since they can only consume fruit and vegetables; they get sick if they consume meat of any kind. Herbivores have the best overall vision at night and can see farther than most other bats. They heightened senses of smell and also powerful jaws for breaking through roots and cracking shells.

Omnivores were a bit more controversial in the lands of Equus as the idea of eating meat in a world inhabited by primarily sentient animals turned quite a few stomachs during the initial integration period. They along with other meat eating species in Equestria get their food from farms that raise pigs, chickens, and fish since they are non-sentient. They are the only ones able to use echolocation to get a handle on their surroundings.

Sanguinivores have a severe iron deficiency and are adapted to specifically extract iron from blood. They have the same diet as an omnivore bat, but need to consume a meal of blood every couple of days to stay healthy. Blood feeders consume sheep or pig blood since it’s easy to purchase from the market (and it’s civilized). The act of drinking blood out of a sentient creature is outlawed. Sanguinivores have sharp incisors for shearing hair and flesh and their saliva contains an anesthetic and anticoagulant (keeps blood from clotting). They have infrared vision and are able to find warm-blooded creatures in the dark but their regular night vision is worse than that of omnivores.

I guess that's one way to show that 'western' (arguably including Islamic) science isn't meant to be a panacea to prove everything, but rather a backup evidence & way to help verify & prove scientific malleability to part of the story. In other words, take Native knowhow with a grain of salt, but don't fully deny it completely before irrefutable proof comes up. With those & the above, STEM & HASS are among the few things that truly are universal, since the former (especially Math) is the closest thing to a universal language. Also, keep in mind that science (especially Abrahamic-derived science) doesn’t prove everything--especially if taken literally--there is, but rather is part of the natural world while the spiritual paths (more widely known as religion) are part of the supernatural world. Magic (of any kinds) is the nexus (bridge or other connection) between the two. For every side, there is an opposite & a balance for both. If by aliens, you mean deities & spirits among other supernatural beings, then maybe aliens were being communicated with by Native builders to all the monuments they’ve made prior to Euro discoveries.

These illustrate the points me & a few others have stated for a while. Both of the above characters (along with Cadence) suffer from what my editor would call the Wally Problem. For those unfamiliar, Wally from the RSE/Hoenn story was kinda neat as a character, but you don’t really hear from him as he’s abandoned for 90% of the games (although he was elaborated upon in ORAS along with the other Gen 3 characters). Shining & Maud are nice, decent, & even likable, but suffer from the above issues.

Interestingly, all 3 ponies are more fleshed out in the comics than in the show, especially in Shining Armour’s case. To sum it up, neither sibling are bad characters, they just didn’t have much done with them in-show (including in EqG), although Maud has made not an insignificant splash in EqG (the shorts, mostly). I personally would’ve liked to find a prequel story showing how & why Shining became captain of the Royal Guard (in literature or otherwise) despite a military draft (even willing to write such myself if needed), but something on Maud’s backstory would be appreciated to flesh her out also.

why do you think there was such a hypocritical split between the fandom's first reactions regarding Shining Armor and Maud Pie's introduction? Like with Shining most claimed he was "sooo forced/out of nowhere" for a brother of Twilight when "she never ONCE mentioned him before"... and yet those same fans *adored* Maud in her debut... even though there was literally NO mention/sign of a third Pie sister before that random photo in "Pinkie Pride"...?

The answer to that question becomes clear once you read your question to yourself out loud. The introduction of a previously unmentioned family member was a problem with Shining, but not with Maud, so this discrepancy most likely means one of two things:

1. Their dislike of Shining has nothing to do with his “sudden” introduction, but they don’t know how to articulate their grievances with his character, so they just cling onto something that’s easy to criticize, even if it doesn’t make any actual sense.

2. They genuinely think the introduction of Shining was sudden and out of nowhere and simply don’t notice or don’t care about the dissonance, or they think that briefly showing Maud in a picture in Pinkie Pride counts as sufficient establishment of her existence even though she was nowhere to be seen in previous depictions of the Pie family.

Being a fanfic writer (despite it having been a while since I last worked on one old or new), I feel this is highly useful and will keep this in mind for when I next do so.
