Whump Fun Fact!

Whump fun fact!

(Again, from experience. Will differ for each person. Not a medical professional)

Scar tissue will HURT even after everything appears fully healed. Especially if the wound was deep. Even if the scar doesn’t inhibit mobility, gentle pressure or movement will make it ache. This can last from a few weeks, to years (I know some people who’s scars haven’t stopped aching decades after the incident) it could be lifelong depending on the injury (this only concerns physical pains not the added mental baggage)

So when writing characters in their recovery arc, even years down the line. Their scars may still pain them (they will never be the same as they were before, even fully healed. ‘Ownership’ fans, run with this as you like)

So, keys pressing into the hips and thighs when going about on errands (like house keys in the front pocket). Backpacks/satchels/bags pressing on shoulders. Belts or other restrictive types of clothing. (I have a friend that gets violently nauseous when even lightly brushing a patch of scar tissue)

The (physical) pain will last for years. Even after everything is healed. Nothing can really be done for it. Even if there is no damage to muscles or anything serious, just skin-damage; it is likely to prevent your character from moving properly, especially if the area covered is extensive (ie whip/lashes accros the back)

Another area for concern is joints, or areas where the skin moves a lot. So: knees, elbows, hips, shoulders, (ankles sometimes but that’s usually due to ligament damage) and definitely hands. Scar tissue lacks the elasticity of normal skin. So bending a joint against the scar tissue will make it ache (or make the skin feel tight and raw, depending on how fresh it is).

Pressure on scar tissue can also affect sleeping. Obviously, side sleepers will have trouble with pressure on their hip, thigh, ribs and shoulder. Back sleepers: back, butt, heels. Front sleepers: chest, shoulders, neck, front of pelvis)

That’s all I can think of for now, hope this helps! Happy hurting!

No devil hides beneath my bed

Tonight Scarlet hosts the Lanista Society for a special dinner event. The Champion is the coveted prize, and Ivan is honored to have been the cause of it.

Champion taglist: @emmettnet , @ostensiblyfunctional

Ivan is left marveling once again at his superior's immaculate taste.

High Martinet Matar sure knew how to throw a party.

Her guests had been greeted with the finest. A banquet of gourmet Crescentine dishes and exotic delicacies. Fresh fruits and cheeses, tender meats and fish, spiced breads and decadent sweets, aged wines from the mountain vineyards. The finest money and magic could offer.

Their venue is just as grand, perhaps more so due to its creativity. A conjured demiplane Scarlet produced specially for this affair. Ivan finds it rather ingenious.

The woman was no stranger to hosting guests at her manor; he himself had been there only last week. But she limits those meetings to no more than a few people at a time. Fewer bodies are easier to keep track of. With large parties like this, comes the ever present risk of unsavory infiltrators. The Lanista Society held members with many enemies. The uninvited in disguise or potential rivals waiting for the right moment to snoop around. Larger groups made it inconvenient to keep tabs on everyone.

The demiplane removed that risk.

No need to worry about the unwanted loose in your home if you're not bringing them to your home to begin with.

And as a bonus, the spell's design was limited only by the imagination. And a wizard of Scarlet's caliber knew fine decor.

All which was fully on display for tonight's event. It was a special occasion after all.

On one end of the chamber, seated on a raised platform, was an ornate bronze cage. Round and domed at the top like one of those old-fashioned bird cages that didn't allow room for the bird to spread its wings. However this cage was far larger, for its occupant was no bird.

Scarlet found the perfect display for the Society's beloved Champion. An advantageous maneuver given he was the subject of business this evening. If Ivan had thought he looked enticing their first meeting a week ago, Scarlet had expertly ensured that the people present now would be incapable of keeping their eyes off him.

In fact, there was already a crowd forming around the cage.

Knees spread and wrists secured above him, the Champion was giving everyone a show with his trembling body. Years of fighting had toned his muscles, and the shimmering red velvet bands only accentuated them. Scarlet must have gotten the outfit custom tailored, for it turned the tiefling's form into a canvas painted with red. Velvet strips hugging his thighs and shoulders. Flowers of beaded lace climbing from hip to collar to the small of his back. Dangling garnets mimicked the appearance of dripping blood.

Absolutely exquisite.

Scarlet had elected to keep his lower region covered, draping that same black cloth around his waist that he'd worn last time. Ivan could see the sense; what was already being shown was enough of a free sample.

The guests were permitted to touch, at least to the extent they were allowed without having to pay. And the Champion’s body was a buffet getting more attention than the actual food. Fingers traced the soft velvet, then slipped in between to caress exposed skin.

“He has the best reactions if you stroke his tail,” Ivan had informed them, and they were quick to take advantage.

The touches worked well to elicit forced pleasure, though perhaps not as much as some other things.

Scarlet couldn't allow her pet to spend the whole party glaring or growling at guests, so Ivan suggested a means to keep him occupied. Just a couple simple toys, one placed inside him and the other encircling the base of his tail where he was most sensitive. Both hidden from the guests eyes with a specially crafted belt that doubled to prevent the tiefling from making a mess of himself.

From how much he was trembling, struggling to close his legs, face flushed as he moaned around the ring gag strapped around his head, the toys were doing their job. And the guests were very much appreciating the sight. Ivan could see a number of people with their hands under their pants.

He couldn't blame them. They stood before a desperate succubus, beckoning them all with pleading huffs of breath and squirming hips. Ivan himself was imagining how pretty that face would look around his cock.

He would have to wait his turn.

Ting! Ting! Ting!

The rhythmic taps of a wine glass drew the attention of the masses to the head of the table where Scarlet stands.

“Now now, everyone. I know my pet has been an exciting treat for you all, but I do hope you help yourselves to the dessert table.”

There were more than a few bouts of embarrassed laughter. Ivan included, as he too nearly forgot to go fill up his dish.

“I'm pleased to see he has garnered such interest,” she continues. “Just a quick reminder that the bidding period ends in thirty minutes. The current highest offer stands at 2,500 platinum.”

Well, not too bad a price tag for the Champion’s first official patron (Ivan's previous night with him didn't count). And if this went to a formal auction at the end of the party, if there was still an active bidding war, that amount would likely grow.

But already, he'd be returning home tomorrow with a decent payment. In a deal that spoke wonders of her generosity, Scarlet had agreed to save a percentage of the funds for him. None of this would've happened had he not raised the suggestion to her.

Lucrative business indeed. Ivan could recognize many big names at this party. Politicians, industry tycoons, nobility, all those with plentiful riches and power. He wonders if he could convince some of them to assist him in forming a similar operation in Mężnydzik. Or perhaps a connected branch.

Those were thoughts for the future. Right now, he was enjoying the view.

The first moment the cage is clear of onlookers, Ivan walks over and reaches through the bronze bars to lift up the Champion’s head to face him. With how long he'd had his mouth held open, his chin was streaked with drool, but thankfully Ivan had the foresight to wear gloves.

“Just like I said, little devil,” he purrs, gazing into eyes that struggle to focus through the mind clouding sensations. The tiefling whines in protest as Ivan lets his other hand trail up his thigh. “I knew you'd be quite popular.”

There's a moment of clarity to the Champion’s stare. A moment he's able to fight through the tears and the unwanted stimulation and-

Oh. Well isn't that a nasty look.

Reference for the outfit here.

WRITING ADVICE!!!

"Pain is Plain."

Let's face it; saying " it was very painful," falls just a little flat. You want something that will empower your writing, enrichen it. Using words that vividly describe a situation or feeling will help your readers "visualize" the scene. It will make them wonder " How is the main character going to survive this?" Or, if the hero is inflicting rightful pain on the antagonist, it will cause them to cheer and anticipate what their favorite character will do next. But none of this will work if you describe a deadly wound as "It really hurt." Here are some alternate words for "painful."

Excruciating

Seering

Stabbing

Ripping

Blood-curling

Paralyzing

Unimaginable

Writhing

Twisting

Shot

Shredding

Tearing

Agonizing

Indescribable

Intolerable

Harrowing

Torturing

Sharp

Spasms

Splitting

Tender

Throbbing

MODERATE PAIN: PAIN THAT DISTRACTS BUT DOESN'T TRULY STOP YOUR CHARACTER.

Ache

Effects of Solitary Confinement/Captivity

For all of you writers out there, it’s important to fully understand the tropes/ideas that you’re writing about. Specifically, solitary confinement is a commonly used whump trope that has many more psychological effects than we expect. Not all of these effects apply to prolonged captivity, but many of them do.

Beyond 15 days, solitary confinement usually causes severe psychological harm.

These effects are more powerful among adolescents because the brain is still developing.

Anxiety/Obsessions

Because of the limited activities prisoners are allowed (being inside room, going to the bathroom, showering, sleeping), they often develop intense obsessions for specific things. Some obsess over cleanliness, hygiene, exercise, self-care, while others obsess over self-mutilation, hallucinations, or a particular object. Anxiety can also develop concerning social interactions, hallucinations, psychosis, and soon victims lose the ability to tell the difference between reality and fantasy.

Decreased Life Expectancy

Due to lack of exercise and high stress, there is a higher risk of hypertension, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes in victims of prolonged captivity.

Depression

Emotional blunting (lack of emotion) due to loss of social contact and activities often leads to depression. Forced loss of initiation of activities/ideas/interactions combined with a sense of hopelessness about their situation leads to this state, too.

Difficulty Thinking/Memory/Concentration

Victims of solitary confinement or prolonged captivity don’t have to think. They don’t have the luxury of practicing and improving upon their mental abilities. Without mental stimulation, the brain deteriorates, leading to significant drops in thinking, memory, and concentration capabilities.

Disorientation in Time and Space

After extensive periods of time without a clock or without a variety of activities to divide time into manageable segments, victims often are unable to tell how much time has passed. They also can hallucinate distortions of space, or walls closing in on them.

Hallucinations of All Senses

Without the ability to see in far distances, vision fades. Also, when the victim’s surroundings don’t change (especially when captivity is in grey/black/white areas), our eyes can lose some ability to see color. Once outside of captivity, colorful surroundings can fade to grey. Also, victims often have intense hallucinations of sounds/smells/sights/feelings because they are perpetually feeling nothing, so their brain makes up anything it can.

Higher Rates of Harm (Self and Others)

Due to the violent ideation, suicidal ideation, and an inability to experience external stimuli, self-harm and violent actions are common amongst victims, specifically when in captivity. Inabililty to feel (due to emotional blunting) leads to a persistent, ever-growing desire to feel something, and many find that ability to feel through committing violent acts.

Hypersensitivity to External Stimuli

Victims often have a complete lack of external stimuli, other than that created by the prison staff, which is rare. Especially when external stimuli is commonly associated with pain (harm by prison guards, captors), hypersensitivity to external stimuli is common among victims. Long periods of time without any stimuli leads to overinflated terror of stimuli in general, as well as increased sensitivity to it.

Inability to Organize Daily Lives

Because victims’ lives are completely controlled by outside forces (prison guards, captors), their brain begins to rely on those forces to organize their lives. Once pushed out of this systematic organization, they often lose the ability to do it themselves and develop chronic lethargy or apathy in which they spend extensive periods of time without doing anything. Sometimes, they stop behaving altogether.

Insomnia

Insomnia is often caused by the lack of external change of the victim’s environment. Because victims cannot often tell day from night or one hour from another, they are in a constant state of time-related confusion, leading to an inability to sleep for a normal period of time. As sleeping is one of the things they can control while in captivity, it can become a sort of coping mechanism to rely on to escape from their outside world, but they often struggle to sleep for long periods of time due to this inability to discern time periods.

Loss of Social Initiation

When confronted with social situations, victims generally avoid initiating any social contact, whether it be physical, verbal, or nonverbal. This is partially due to a lack of previous social contact (other than prison guards), which leads to a sense of anxiety around all social interaction because they have so little of it. Also, the loss of ability to organize their own lives can contribute to this.

Overt Paranoia

Extreme paranoia is common amongst victims of prolonged captivity, especially when the victim experiences repetitive, severe harm. Combined with an inability to know what time it is, the victim is on constant high alert for any source of possible harm, meaning paranoia can develop with anything they associate with harm, whether it be noises, objects, or sights.

Poor Impulse/Emotion Control

Specifically fear and rage, victims often suffer from an inability to control their emotions and the behavior caused by any emotions they experience. Because they have so little social contact, any social experience they do have is often fueled by hours and hours of pent-up rage, fear, or anxiety. These suppressed feelings explode during social interactions, leading to acts of violence or panic attacks during these experiences.

Psychosis

The symptom of psychosis is often related to the hallucinations that victims experience when in solitary confinement. Due to a constant state of being alone, they tend to hallucinate social interactions with other people, voices, and feelings, leading to a state of disconnect from reality.

Suicidal Ideation

As well as violent ideation (towards others, especially captors/guards), suicidal ideation is relatively common amongst victims because they are isolated in their minds, forced to fantasize about ways to escape their captivity. These fantasies often involve killing the guards or killing themselves. These fantasies often have more violent tendencies due to the withheld rage/fear they experience.

If you’d like any other research-based explanations of any other whump tropes or writing tropes, just ask!

Y'know what! Fira has inspired me so I'm gonna talk about my second-favorite Dragon Slayer headcanon, and it goes as such:

The more stress a Dragon Slayer's body goes through, the more it dragonizes. This is a really dry way to say that I think injuries a Dragon Slayer gets will scar over with scales, and also that mental stress can have consequences that are…interesting, to say the least, from a writer's perspective.

Let me bring in my favorite punching bag, Gajeel. In my headcanon appearance for him, the scars on his right arm are replaced by patches of iron scales—rusting iron scales, depending on how old those scars are, because I think rust would be really cool and mimic how human scars fade from age, and ruddy rust blends better with human skintones than silvery iron. But I also really like the idea of him having iron spines all the way down his back, for the aesthetic. Which could have the Watsonian explanation of him potentially being so distrusting of anybody to guard him in the past, that his magic responded to his paranoia and trauma by protecting his spine from a literal backstabber. Two headcanons all wrapped up in a neat 'what if dragonization responded to human fragility by dragonizing it away' bow! :D

fairy tail gajeel redfox dragon slayers I'm still so freaking proud of all the headcanons we lobbed at each other in this post. just a constant creative back and forth plus it's whump! it counts! and now I'm wondering what specific traumas could lead to the other dragon slayers dragonizing just natsu's sheer eagerness for throwing himself into fights he can't win will give him a BUNCH of scales just to keep himself in one piec gives me the idea that his knuckles are positively crusted with scales because he has such a punch-happy fighting style oh! his scales would be red! so maybe he would look like he's constantly bleeding or something! I am far too excited by this prospect lol and sting! sting is super young for a guild master and sabertooth prob isn't doing so hot with losing their undefeatable reputation so he might get targeted a lot and rogue won't always be there to help him or maybe earlier for both twin dragons when they're younger and still proving themselves to jiemma oh HELL i just thought of something heartbreaking for wendy most animals don't cry like we do right? not for emotional release. just illness or if they get something in them im pretty sure birds and lizards aren't capable of crying like humans wendy has been abandoned by a LOT of her caretakers. maybe they had good reasons but at the end of the day it was abandonment grandeeney mystogan cait shelter—all of them left and in the edolas arc there was a scary moment where fairy tail seemed to be taken from her too (when the guild hall warps out of existence so i think wendy would have a lot of issues around abandonment and would get really stressed about her loved ones leaving her and maybe her magic would try to protect her by taking away her body's reactions to that stress if you're not reacting then it's not happening! you're not being hurt by it at all! right? so basically I think her magic would dragonize away her human ability to cry from emotional stress which. wow. I kinda like this ingenuity but I kinda hate what it's led to wendy marvell

I thought you guys might find this to be a good visualization for your writing. Here’s some of the medical equipment that CLS (Combat Lifesaver) qualified combatants (and medics of course) would be expected to be proficient in using. Note that CLS qualified combatants are nonmedical personnel.

Individual First Aid Kits should be on the body of every combatant. Buddy Aid bags should only be cracked open at last resort.
