gepard’s cape is very important to him. even after years of serving as belobog’s protector, even when wrinkles begin to crease in his smile lines, he wears the same one he was appointed as captain with.

you see how devastated he is when it gets tattered after a battle, royal blue stained with red, full of rips and loose hems and all. he’s grateful that you sew it up for him the best you can— his cape doesn’t look all that great after you’ve patched it up, but it’s enough to get the job done.

that’s all that really matters.

his sister pokes fun at him for being as attached to his cape as a dog is to its chew toy, but you know it’s more than just an accessory to his title.

he tells you often that he remembers every child he’s bundled up with it, every person he’s shielded from the winter storm— and most of all, he remembers you. those memories shine like the brightest chunks of geomarrow, all the times you’ve tucked yourself under the cape and into his side on chilly morning walks, all the times you use it as a blanket at night whenever you miss him (he’s only in the next room over taking a shower).

and you realize that gepard is just as sentimental as when he was 10 years old, albeit much less of a crybaby. his desire to protect the city and its people run as deep in his blood as his love does for you; he places that entire weight on this one piece of cloth.

inevitably, that day will come when the holes in it will be too big to patch up, the ends far too frayed to be saved. he's sad, but he understands, and his ears perk up when you sympathetically kiss his cheek and tell him you'll try to salvage what you can of the remaining fabric.

soon enough you're handing him a box and inhaling a shaky breath; gepard reassures you that he'll be bound to love whatever it is you've upcycled his cape into.

his voice withers out and the backs of his eyes begin to sting when he's presented with a tiny, royal blue baby onesie.
