There’s a lot of evidence for Solas starting out in Inquisition with a very misinformed view of the world, and I think that most of the negative interpretations of his character are due to people leaping on that initial misunderstanding of the world and judging it as some kind of moral failure.

It’s really weird to me, too, because there is all the evidence in the world of Solas being willing to change his mind about the majority of his misconceptions, but just the fact that he had those misconceptions in the first place is enough to damn him, apparently. There’s no room for characters who believe horrible things due to ignorance and self-preservation, but change their minds if given the chance. If the character isn’t perfect from the get-go, if they believe something horrible at one point, they’re horrible forever. There’s no room for characters who are willing to seek after and accept hard truths, who are willing to admit their entire framework is wrong.

And Solas is specifically interesting because it’s fully due to his interactions with you, the player, that he’s able to confront and discard his preconceptions, so it’s like… doubly ironic that people would first neglect to engage the character, and then dislike him for saying and believing things he would stop saying and believing if you had just talked to him a little bit.

I’ll give an example.
