“Luna rex provocatione means ‘the moon king’s challenge.’ It is never invoked lightly as its consequences are grave indeed… If an alpha believes that he is the true Alpha and the goddess has placed another in his path as a test of worthiness and dedication to the pack, then he will acknowledge his acceptance of this test by declaring luna rex provocatione. Once the challenge has been set forth only the death of the Luna’s first mate or the total surrender of the challenger can satisfy it…”

Text of the traditional speech given by a chief elder to begin a luna rex provocatione ritual [7th century]

“I know you won’t understand, but this isn’t personal-”

Jimin offered his rival an overtly feigned smile.

“You plan to kill me and claim my mate. Which part of that could I possibly take personally?”

Tae snorted somewhere in the background and Yoongi elbowed him hard.

Tradition dictated that both alphas meet with their second-in-commands in the chief elder’s chambers to discuss the terms of combat.

Namjoon brought Min Yoongi and Jimin had somehow ended up with Taehyung.

He didn’t remember actually agreeing to make Tae his second…

It just sort of happened somewhere between calming his hysterical mother and quickly reading up on archaic pack law.

The chief elder coughed uncomfortably. Goddess, this ascension was supposed to be easy. He never in a million moons thought he’d be in this position.

The last chief elder who oversaw a luna rex provocatione ritual had immortalized it in his journal as “the single most horrific moment of my life,” describing in detail the Luna howling in torment at the loss of her mate and the victor collapsing over the corpse of his foe in misery and guilt.

As in the past, the outcome of this conflict was already decided by fate…

Pain and regret weighed heavily on the older man as he considered the younger of the two alphas.

Park Jimin was going to die violently and there was nothing he could do about it.

“Because Kim Namjoon issued the challenge, his opponent will decide combat form. Your choices are human form, half-shifted, and wolf-form. After your choice is declared, Namjoon may add a minor alteration if he so desires. Park Jimin, please declare form.”

“Human,” he answered softly - and every single occupant of the room recoiled in response.

It was bad enough to witness a fight in wolf form or half-shifted… but to engage in ritual combat as a human-

It would be brutal - even psychologically disturbing - without the benefit of a wolf’s hide to mask the savagery.

Namjoon’s eyes widened in shock, but he recovered quickly.

“I request teeth and claws.”

Not quite a half-shift. Teeth and claws allowed for attacks using lengthened canines and claws.

It could make a kill slightly more… humane.

Jimin nodded and the elder pressed his seal over the first of the terms.

- In all honesty, Out of all of the things that have happened to Jungkook and Hobi, the revelation of Jungkook being a sorcerer is probably the easiest to come to terms with. 

- The moment after the dust settles, and Seokjin’s words sink in, Hoseok pulls Jungkook into his lap and clutches him close, chanting low in his ear. “We’re okay, Kookie- we’re gonna be okay” and he’s right. They will be. If there is one thing that’s certain in this story it’s that Jungkook and Hobi will always be okay.

- When the dust settles and you’re all alright, the air hovers- thick and stifling, until Yoongi leans in, leveling you with a flirty relieved look, “You sure you’re human?” your family’s relieved laughs bounce off the rock walls, dissipating the cloud of despair “if you’re going to turn into something different now’s the time.” Jungkook hides his laughter in his father’s shoulder.

“I’m bored.”

A sigh. The sound of bare feet shuffling across the carpet and a heavy weight dropping down onto the other couch cushion. You pretended like you couldn’t hear it, fiddling with the remote control in your hands until the volume on the television was raised. Reruns of some sitcom had been on all day, and you’d be lying if you said that you weren’t a little invested in the corny storyline.

“I said,” a whine of annoyance was accompanied by a familiar head of wavy dark hair flopping onto your lap. “I’m bored.”

Rolling your eyes, you continued to ignore the gaze that burned a metaphorical hole into your face. The less attention you gave him, the less likely that the little shit would keep bothering you. At least, that’s what you’d learned over the past year he’d been terrorizing you. Though maybe “terrorizing” was the wrong descriptor. Annoying the Hell out of you rolled off the tongue a little better.

Pun not intended.

“Y/n. Y/n. Y/n.” Each syllable of your name was punctuated by a finger poking into your cheek just hard enough to annoy you, but soft enough not to hurt. “Y/n. Y/n. Y/n.”

“What?” You finally snapped, slapping away his pestering hand with a glare downwards. “What do you want, Jungkook?”

Jungkook sighed in exasperation (as if you were the one bothering him!), twisting around in your lap until the blanket thrown over your legs was more on the floor than the couch. “I’m bored.”

You pinched the bridge of your nose between your fingers in an attempt to control your irritation. “And what do you want me to do about it?”

“Entertain me.” His warm golden eyes scrunched in the corners when he flashed you a toothy smile. He had perfect teeth, if not a little oversized. You’d always thought that they were cute, even though his incisors were so sharply pointed that he could pierce through human bone without even trying.

“Entertain yourself.” Pressing the up button on the remote, the volume on the television increased until Jungkook’s indignant whines were drowned out by the couple on the screen. In a perfect, coincidental fashion, an obviously fake laugh track filled your living room right as you finished grumbling, “fuck off.”

“But I’m your familiar. You’re supposed to take care of me.”

He was pouting now, you could tell without even sparing him a glance. Cheeks all puffed up with air and eyes widened. The brat had used that trick enough on you in the past to know damn well that it worked. How a literal demon from Hell managed to pull off looking so innocent was beyond your comprehension.

Your bag seems to weigh you down as you slowly climb out of the car, coat flapping against the sides of your thighs. With a huff, you transfer it to your left hand as you trudge up to the door, blindly reaching inside it for the house keys.

The foyer light is still on despite the fact that it’s nearing 10 PM, and as you unlace your shoes and place them on the rack, you can hear the faint noise of the television coming from the living room.

With a sigh, you make your way further into the house, gently massaging your temple in a vain effort to get rid of the headache that’s been mounting for the last couple of hours.

You’re too tired to admonish him for staying up and waiting for you to return from the hospital for the third time this week, but you feel like you should still say something. He’s supposed to be on holiday, for fuck’s sake. You wouldn’t dream of trying to get him to stop working hard during the day, knowing that it’s as natural as breathing when it comes to his production regardless of whether the company’s given the band a twenty day break or not, but the fact that he puts off sleep until you come back home simultaneously irks and flatters you, all in all making you feel like you just have one more thing to deal with at the end of every day.

You’re in for a surprise, though, as you enter the living room thinking all these hard thoughts only to see a gently snoring Yoongi asleep on the couch, spectacles precariously positioned on the bridge of his nose. Evidently fallen asleep in the middle of a show, he’s got his knees folded in, tucked tightly into his chest. One of his elbows is resting on the couch arm, hand propping up his tilted head, and the other is resting on Holly’s similarly asleep frame that’s pressed against his thigh.

Yoongi feels his chest ache at Jungkook’s response, kicking himself for leaving him behind.

Despite his perfectly good reasons for leaving his House, Yoongi still feels guilty for doing it the way he did; he just felt he had no other choice.

And so it was...

Now that Yoongi had back up, he felt significantly better about the situation next door. However, the tension between him and his family makes his stomach turn.

He knows that to a certain extent, they are right.

But he also feels strongly about his reasons for leaving.

The way he feels hasn’t changed, despite the fact that he misses his brothers. He never signed up for this life and, he doesn’t feel like he should have to base all of his decisions around something he never asked for in the first place.
