We Need to Talk About Engagement

No, I don’t mean that step you take in the pursuit of marrying someone.

I mean interaction. Messages and reblogs.

A couple months ago, there were posts circulating about how the like to ratio reblog was unfair because likes do not give writers the opportunity to be seen where reblogs do. Once enough people reblogged this or added to it, engagement went way up and the ratios were better and people were sending messages and replying to fics about how much they loved them!

Then, it seems, everyone went “I did my part” and gave up on it.

Engagement seems to be at an all-time-low; the like to reblog ratio seems to be gapped even wider now, people are hardly sending messages in, and heck people are even reading fics without even LIKING them.

I thought it was me at first and that everyone grew bored of my writing, but then my friends said they weren’t gaining much attention either or they were no longer receiving many asks. And then posts about it started popping up about how engagement was down 50%.

Why? What is so bad about reblogging a fic or replying to it? We write for ourselves, but the sweet comments and messages make it worth putting out there for people. Seeing people simply like it or pay no mind to it is very discouraging.

Here are some things you can do to help engagement go up that are barely any effort on your part and are very appreciated:

Reblog a fic if you like it. You don’t even have to say anything if you are allowing other people the chance to see it.

Send asks. Comment on your reblogs if there’s something for you to say. Reply to the post. Put things in the tags bc we go and read them!

Popular writers; if you see a fic and you enjoy it, you should reblog it. If you have a nice following, they should be seen just as much as your fics should be, especially if written by a smaller writer.

Even if all you want to do is DM someone to tell them how great their fic is, that’s wonderful!

I understand there’s some inferiority/superiority thing on here where bc someone’s writing is popular they seem intimidating, but we LOVE COMMENTS. WE LOVE ASKS. IF SOMEONE DOES NOT LIKE THESE THINGS THEN THEY ARE A JERK WHO YOU SHOULD NOT SUPPORT THE WRITING OF.

Please just tell us what you’re thinking even if it’s “sdfoisjdfaslk” bc we really appreciate it and it makes us WANT to keep writing and showing our work.

The lack of interaction from people and the amount of silent readers who do no more than like is so discouraging to us and I think that’s kind of obvious across the platform, so PLEASE, do not be afraid to tell us what you think of the fic and to reblog it.

One of my favorite series to read on tumblr.  I am rereading this for like the fourth time.

As a ghost, there were a few things that Yoongi was sure of: 1) He was going to be stuck in the same god damn outfit, which he didn’t like that much to begin with, forever. 2) Being dead was a lot more boring than one might expect, and there was never anything good on daytime TV. And 3) He was most definitely going to be alone for all of eternity.

The first two were not so bad, he supposed, but after a few months of being a ghost, the third one had really started to get to him. Being invisible to the world was nice for a time, sure, but a person can only stand solitude for so long, and he soon found himself longing to be seen, to be heard, to be at least acknowledged by someone—anyone.

Yoongi didn’t exactly have the best track record with living people in his afterlife. When he had first figured out that he was dead, he had gone straight to his girlfriend’s house, only to find that months had passed since he’d died, and she had already moved on with another man. He’d been so distraught by the news that he’d tried to reach out and touch her, and, to his surprise, he did. He grabbed her arm and she felt it; for a moment, he even swore his reflection had become visible to her in the mirror, shocking the both of them. But the look on her face when she’d seen him was something he’d never forget; fear. So that day, as he fled from her house, he’d promised himself to never again get involved in the lives of the living.

Which would have worked out just fine for him, if his peaceful eternal exile wasn’t being constantly interrupted by exactly that; living people.

“Yoongi, did you do something again?” You ask, hands closed loosely around the bouquet of peruvian lilies your best friend had got you.  “You never get me flowers and you don’t do something nice for me unless you want something or have something to apologise for.”

Yoongi stares at you, open-mouthed.  You grimace slightly and backtrack.  “Okay, sorry, I worded that badly.  You do do a lot of nice things for me, even when you’re tired, and I know how important your rest is to you.  But this is a little out of the blue and it feels like you’re buttering me up.  So…what’s up, Yoongi?”

Your best friend stares at you, expression still unamused, mouth tightening in a line, your eyes involuntarily honing in on the miniscule movement.  If he notices your line of vision, he shows no signs of commenting on it, instead sticking his tongue out to wet his lips before speaking up.

“Honestly?  I took the long way home from work today and saw a new flower stand.  You know those pop-up stores?  Yeah, those.  Anyway, I saw the flowers and thought of you.  I know you don’t have the best track record with keeping flowers alive, but don’t worry, I’ll help you take care of these.”

You smile and clutch the bouquet tighter, bringing them up to your nose to sniff.  Though you had a sensitive nose, you still liked the smell of your favourite flowers.  With one last whiff, you shift the flowers to one arm and link the other through Yoongi’s, pulling him forward with you when he doesn’t walk.

“C’mon, let’s go find a vase!”

This continues for two more weeks, each gesture getting a little grander each time.  By the time you’ve given in to your suspicions and worked up the courage to confront Yoongi, you and Yoongi are at a dinner so unlike his style that you had gone speechless for half an hour and are about to tuck into your appetisers.  

“Yoongi…this place costs a fortune…what’s going on?  What are you doing?” Yoongi fiddles nervously with his fork and knife, almost dropping them onto his plate as he picks them up with shaking hands.  

“O-okay, so there might’ve been something that you’ll get mad at me for…” Yoongi trails off as he smooths wrinkles from the napkin on his lap, refusing to meet your eyes.  It’s difficult to not look at you since you’re dressed to the nines and at the most beautiful he’s ever seen you, but his fear of you getting angry at him for what he’s planned is enough to turn him meek.

Your eyes narrow, fork falling forward slightly as you relax your grip on it, distracted by Yoongi’s strange behaviour.  “Yoongi…what is it?”

“Do you trust me?” You blink.
