Inuyasha Fan art Controversy

Recently a facebook group by the name of Es Sesshome took @lenbarboza‘s Inukag and Sessrin work and manipulated it into looking like a Sesskag pic, reposted it on the group and avoided crediting the artist. You can read about it on their page - here.

This is an upsetting thing to happen, yes, but I wanted to bring this up because this issue affects sesskag fans too. Since around March 2019, this group has been reposting sesskag artists pictures without crediting or asking their permission. In the case of my manips, they were taken and further edited without my permission to include other elements.

@sayuri-watanabe, @youkaiyume, @rannyunny and various other sesskag artist’s work can be found on the page.

The facebook group is completely aware that they’re reposting without permission but skirt about this issue by claiming that it would ‘take too long’ to ask for the artist’s permission. They claim that since fanart isn’t original art we barely have a claim to it as we’re taking from the source material of Inuyasha. They also say that since we ship the same ship, we shouldn’t have an issue with them reposting sesskag art uncredited. They leave the artists watermark on the actual image so they can pat themselves on the back and claim that by reposting images they’re giving the artist ‘exposure’ (yea how are you doing that if there’s no link to the artist in question in your descriptions?)

I’m sorry but us shipping the same ship does NOT give you permission to act as you please. I wrote this post because I worried Inuyasha artists would see the sesskag shippers on tumblr/dokuga as supporting this facebook group, but I’m here to say the vast majority of us do not support this behaviour. The way they conduct themselves shows a complete lack of respect.

I leave it to you to decide what to do, but even if your art hasn’t been taken, you can still leave the page a bad review. The more bad reviews the more likely the person in charge of the page might rethink how they run things. Artists whose work has been stolen can report the group to facebook OR find the image of their work and report the art in question.
