THE MURDERBOT DIARIES: A Fan Animation

Subtitles in English, Spanish, French, and German.

In early 2021, as talk of a Murderbot Diaries adaptation was underway, fans of the series started asking each other questions like, "What would we want to see from an adaptation of our favorite book series?" and "Wouldn't it be cool if this or that scene was animated?" and "Hey, don't YOU know some things about animation?" and "What if a bunch of fans got together to make a Murderbot fan animation?"

Two years of teamwork later, the Murderbot Diaries Fanimation Project presents our labor of love: a fully realized animation adapting scenes from the first four novellas into a trailer, dedicated to showcasing everything we love about the story of our favorite rogue SecUnit.

Drop in recommendation

I read the Heart Test by Helen Hoang tonight and it was really good.

Emotionally harrowing in some parts*, but I found the HFN/HEA conclusion extremely satisfying. I cried and cheered and urgently wished for a specific character to be launched into the sun

More detailed thoughts to come but! Another recommendation

Spoilers below for what made it harrowing (not detailed, just like in the form of content warnings)

Parental death. Ableism. Suicidal ideation. Austistic burnout following masking. Cancer (character had testicular cancer innpast year)

Oh and there are sex scenes! Those aren't harrowing but JSYK. They're nice sex scenes though.

This is doing something to my brain

There was nothing here dazzling enough to describe as magic. The spell was in the obsession, the relentless intensity.

We absolutely stan any book that brings the banhammer down on dickhead guys flirting instead of respecting the chain of command. As a woman who taught for a lot of years, you really do learn how to walk into a classroom and how to shut this shit down. Thank goodness that there are books out there that tell girls that they are not ever expected to put up with that kind of unprofessional nonsense.

The Frog Princess (E. D. Baker)

I loved this series when I was a wee child, and I picked it up again from the library for some good old-fashioned comfort reading. (Incidentally, when Disney’s the Princess and the Frog came out, it briefly gobbled up all the search results for this series, but they’re not related.)

This is a book series for young readers! It features magic, talking animals, friendship, a (cute and tame) romantic relationship, and uhhhh magic. I love magic. And magic talking animals.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK

Talking animals! Over the course of the series, the princess Emma meets a talking prince-turned-frog, gets turned into a frog herself, meets a nice bat named Lil, and also becomes (among other things) a dragon-friend!

Character development! You get to see the characters grow and change over the course of the series!

That YA classic “feeling like you don’t fit in with your assigned role in society” theme. Listen, the girl Emma would not be running off and hiding in the swamp if everything was always easy all the time

This is a fun series, and I recommend it :)

Well fuck Balin

This is one of my favorite lines! It makes me smile every time

Reasons "Well fuck Balin" is a great line

JollyBaby going "nah Balin is a manager" and MB being like "wait Balin doesn't lift heavy things because it's a manager? UGH" is just funny and relatable

It's also MEMORABLE

This means that later on, when we learn more about Balin, I'm not like "uh whomst the fuck?"

(I have a so-so memory and frequently struggle to keep track of different characters' names)

AND it's important that we remember Balin

I seriously think this one line is just... really incredible from a "how does the story fit together" point of view.

It's memorable, but it doesn't draw too much attention to itself. It's short and unobtrusive.

It's memorable because it's funny. It's not obvious like a character, I dunno, ominously standing in the shadows with its eyes/indicator lights turning red.

It helps the story function. Imagine how much worse the story would function if Balin was completely unmemorable.

And that's why "Well fuck Balin" is one of my favorite murderbot lines of all time.
