Tamora Pierce is one of the greatest female fantasy authors of all time, she is in the same echelon as Ursula K. Le Guin and Octavia Butler, I will never stop defending her books. Even the ones that I hate, because I still read them.
(by “ones that I hate” I am referring, of course, to Mastiff.)

I am such a book hoarder but I need to get rid of some books. I have a LOT of Tamora Pierce books that I am keeping (for now!) But I'm not keeping all of them...
Goodbye, Song of the Lioness Quartet!
I loved this series, but I almost never get the urge to reread them. I have very warm feelings about the series because they were my introduction to Pierce's writing. I hope someone else snags them and falls in love.
Goodbye, Beka Cooper books! I still reread these, but they're so bulky I'd rather read them in ebook form. I need the physical space. One thing I'll definitely miss is being able to flip to the glossary and cast of characters at the back, but these are the sacrifices we make. (I might say goodbye to the Trickster books for size/space reasons too, but at least those are paperback)
Goodbye, entire hardcover anthology I bought for one (1) story set in the Tortall universe! It was a good story too :D
I hope these books find a new home with someone who enjoys them!

I FEEL SO STRONGLY ABOUT THE CHAMBER'S REACTION TO KEL OK
kel is the lump, a stone, the calm surface of a lake- but ONLY on the outside- ONLY to make dealing with people work better
the chamber hammers your weak spots trying to make you BREAK, but KEL, WENT TO THE CHAMBER, AGAIN AND AGAIN, she GREW AROUND it like a TREE
the day came when the chamber had it's chance- to strike her as HARD AS IT COULD
and
there was almost nothing left for it to even aim at
because kel had stuck HERSELF already, had BEEN hammering herself this whole time- had been TESTING herself every step of the way QUESTIONING HERSELF AND asking herself how she could be and do better next time
for the sake of those who need someone when no one sees them as people. for the sake of unwanted animals and overlooked humans- kel became her own ordeal
the chamber couldn't break Kel. SHE broke IT
so it had nothing to do, except make her an ordeal in the real world-
the nothing man, child killer, the promise she will stare evil in the face somewhere somehow, that tantalizing and USELESS knowledge burning her as she is given charge of convicts and refugees and not enough soldiers to defend them and her old desire to be like the Lioness, her inspiration, to go out there and STOP THIS SUFFERING FROM HAPPENNG HERSELF
the chamber jammed this thorn into her heart and THEN it chose to Watch Her out there
as she.... chose people. Again. chose care over glory. everyday duty over heroics. obscurity to wider world- but a friend to a small corner of the world that desperately needed someone to see them, fight for them, and not ever look away... or abandon them
the chamber saw that. it NAMED HER- didn't chose her- didn't make her- gave no gift other than pain to her
but it was glad, to have seen her

i just finished reading realm of the gods and.
first of all it was a fucking incredible book. just. 10/10 no notes (you will see that this post does continue so actually i have many notes but still). the pacing is always so delightful in that we never spend too much time getting from place to place or on the things that don't matter. the characterizations were so consistent and so delightful. the dialogue was. god. i love the dialogue in these books so much.
and the thing that most surprised me was.
look.
i'm not like, wild, about numair and daine. i do think the age gap is still a little weird, but the fact that it's so extreme and the way they interact earlier in the book makes me think that this wasn't planned from the beginning, that ms. pierce just saw their characters evolving along that path and went with it.
and the thing is, it does work. daine has always been an incredibly self contained character who stands on her own so well. she has companions and friends but she's not so deeply involved with them as alanna, for instance. we see an example of this in the fact that she nearly gives up the mortal realm to keep her word. she values her honor and integrity and the various things that make her who she is over her relationships. Allan would never consider keeping her word over her interpersonal relationships.
so daine, as a character who stands so well on her own, who is so down to earth and straightforward and determined, doesn't see the age gap as an issue. she likes numair, he likes her, and she doesn't care about what reputation she might have. she wouldn't even consider that he might be manipulating her and she very quickly dismisses the concept that she might not be experienced enough for him. it's clear to her that he knows what he wants and he's just getting his frippery in the way.
meanwhile, numair is worrying enough for the both of them and their grandmothers because he's an overthinker and cares more about daine that he does himself. he didn't see her like this from the beginning, but he also didn't singlehandedly raise her. he wasn't really her guardian–she hasn't quite had a relationship like that since her mother, because she didn't need one. he was a friend, who was older than her, and a mentor, but she didn't want a father or even an older brother out of him. he's never seen her in the light of a daughter either, only as a younger friend and then someone experienced and powerful and level with him in different areas.
i guess it was just surprising how little it bothered me, thanks to the way she handled it.

say what you will about young adult fantasy but there has never been a more badass scene in any novel I’ve ever read than “angry young woman magically reanimates evil emperor’s fossil collection and goes on a dinosaur rampage to destroy his palace”

Only the second Lady Knight of the age and a hero even before becoming a squire, Pierce's third heroine of the Tortall series is a dedicated force for protection of all.

Can we talk about Coram for a minute? The guy raised two rebellious Trebond magelets (despite being terrified of magic), is a career soldier who earned the title of Baron because he had to change Alanna’s diapers, and is also apparently a ladykiller who nabbed the heart of Her Majesty Rispah Cooper, Queen of the Ladies of the Rogue. If there’s a more underrated character in the series I can’t really think of one
