And Jason couldn’t help it.

He scoffed.

“Jason Todd is worth nothing compared to Robin,” he bit back, fury and shame burning bright in his gut. “He had to resort to crime to make it through the winter. He scrounged his meals from dumpsters. As Robin, as Bruce’s partner, I can make a difference, both for myself and for the city. Why would want to ‘just’ be Jason Todd, when I can be so much more?”

Leslie was calm, unflinching, allowing Jason to snarl, the self loathing in his voice ringing out clearly.

"Well that's just the thing. Isn't it? Jason Todd had to do those things. If he had been given a choice? An alternative. If things had been different? Would he have done the same thing if given another chance?

Discreetly, Leslie caught the time on her wristwatch and fought against the urge to sigh. They were just starting to get into it...

"I have a challenge for you. If you think you're up to it." She allowed just a hint of doubt into her voice in an attempt to goad him slightly.

As if that was going to fix anything.

It wouldn’t fade the bruises Willis had left behind on him and his mom. Talking wouldn’t bring Catherine back. It wouldn’t make the memory of an empty stomach and freezing feet fade away. And it wouldn’t take away the greedy hands off of his skin.

Jason scoffed, shaking his head a little. “I don’t need to talk about it, ma'am. And I don’t want to keep dragging up the mess I left behind when Bruce found me. Whatever needs fixing, I can fix. Whatever ‘demons’ there are, I can fight. As myself I couldn’t do shit. As Robin I can.”

As Robin, I’m worth something more.

Leslie was quiet for a moment, allowing Jason's words to hang in the air. It was a valid point, if what happened hadn't effected him, didn't have any power over him, then why would he want to talk about it? But then, Leslie thought rather instead that he was deferring the issues. Hoping they would disappear entirely if only he could turn into someone else. Someone he percieved as better.

She shifted slightly in her seat. "Robin isn't a person. It's a construct. A persona. A mantle. You can be Robin, but you'll still always also be Jason. Someone who has a lot of merit all on his own."

She caught the look on the young boys fsce and pressed forward again before he had chance to interrupt her.

"I think you would do yourself a disservice if you forgot about Jason. After all, he is just as important, if not more so than Robin."

// sorry i’ve been kinda slow on the replies lately. have saved a ton of drafts tonight across all accounts so shall work through them this weekend. <3

i feel like the line that writers are not willing to cross when it comes to bruce and gordon’s relationship is allowing either of them to reach the natural conclusion of recognizing the system as permanently rotted, but esp gordon bc he is within the heart of it. while not perfect i wouldn’t entirely mind gordon trying to fix the system from within if it led him to a realization that he realistically cannot do that (because even if he helps change individual people, the system that benefits and facilitates their inclinations towards senseless violence is still there) and so pursuing other means or avenues of justice is what he should move towards instead. i understand writers maintain bruce’s connection to gordon as a sort of in to crime scenes and the upper echelons of gotham society etc but the more i think about it the more i question why having this in is even necessary when bruce has barbara. if she can hack and gain access to things at a federal level then what’s stopping her from doing the same at a municipal level? not to mention the way bruce’s social network expands over the years should allow him more access to the spheres he’s trying to infiltrate 

i just don’t think gordon is a character whose position as commissioner should be seen as viable or worth maintaining in the long term and to me not just bruce but the batman mythos in general would benefit more from centering people like leslie thompkins as important allies instead. before war games leslie was a beacon of bruce’s inclinations towards philanthropy and was constantly used to emphasize that while bruce understood he needed to use violence now he didn’t want that to be the case forever and was in agreement with leslie on working towards a day where vigilantes like him would no longer be needed. leslie could theoretically be an avenue through which to move bruce towards embracing a more abolitionist stance than is already subtly implied by the dedication he has towards investing in charities and trying to help uplift financially disadvantaged communities in gotham and if their relationship with and respect of each other was more valued by comic writers rather than mutilated to create empty lecturing points for bruce than we could return to a more hopeful bruce and a more hopeful batman in general 

Leslie had to admit she had been somewhat unconvinced that Jason would return, so seeing him at her office door was a welcome surprise. “Lovely to see you Jason. Please, come in. Take a seat.”

Busying about offering him something to eat and drink, something she was keen to become a routine occurrence, she added. “How has your week been?” Hopefully a generic way to break the ice given he wasn’t outwardly displaying any particularly strong emotion.

Just a thought exercise.

Jason still didn’t trust it, didn’t see the point of it, but he understood what she was offering.

Bruce had expressed his worry. And he’d continue to express his worry if Jason would leave it with only the one meeting; there’d be no telling what else he might make him do to elevate that worry. Leslie was offering… almost like a cover, to keep Bruce off his back.

He couldn’t quite figure out her angle – maybe she really wants to help, idiot – but Jason rose up from his seat, journal still in hand. “Guess I’ll see you next week then, doc.”

Hope bloomed in the wake of his statement and Leslie smiled, whatever his motivation, agreeing to come back in any case was a milestone and she was proud of him for it.

She got to her feet, following his lead. “Excellent. Thank you Jason. And here-” Leslie handed him a slip of paper. “My contact details, if you ever want to get in touch between visits. Better to have them and not need them…”

“Same time next week work alright for you? I can work around any rehersals or clubs you have after school.”
