Dimitri Appreciation Hour!!!

I don’t know if I’ve ever said this before, but y’know what today I feel like spreading some Dimitri positivity so here it is.

I love Dimitri because he is messy. He is messy, and violent, and hurt, and yet he is never treated as a lost cause by those around him. He is never deemed worth giving up on, and he never has to earn any redemption through death, because he is never treated as if his death is more valuable than his life.

I love that about AM! I remember playing for the first time with a sinking feeling in my gut, because most characters like Dimitri don’t get that. They’re treated as if their only value to the world is to die, and there is no redemption for people who have messy, complicated feelings (or worse, behave in messy complicated ways) about their traumas. It’s precisely because Dimitri found the strength to recognize his messy, complicated actions, and he’s allowed to strive to do better, that I love him so much. That really resonated with me, because I like to believe that even when I am not perfect I am still capable of being better than my darkest moments.

So a lot of the narratives and fan reaction surrounding him has always baffled me. That he’s not really mentally ill. That his struggle is too ugly. That he deserves to be put down.

And that’s… hard. It’s hard for me to look at. I don’t ever want to say that people go into these discussions with bad intentions, but, well… I think it demonstrates a specific kind of ignorance. This idea that we can only accept struggles with mental health if they are the “right” kind, aka the pretty kind that doesn’t inconvenience anyone too much. Or even if it does, it doesn’t look ugly or make anyone else feel too bad. This idea that it’s only alright to be different so long as your version of “different” is still acceptable to the prevailing (white, cishet, male) culture. I think we need to dispense with the idea that we are only valid when we react “acceptably” to our traumas. I also think we need to dispense with the idea that we are always our best selves, even when we are hurting, and any reaction to hurt is completely healthy. We always can be our best selves, but it takes work. It takes insight. It takes dedication. I think Dimitri works because he demonstrates this struggle so perfectly. He is not his best self in the beginning… but that doesn’t mean he can never be his best self. He does not start out processing his trauma in a healthy manner, but he gets there.

A comic to try and sort through some difficult feelings about being an artist and a reminder to not forget who you are.
