My Favorite Metal Bands
My Favorite Metal Bands
As the title suggests, I’m going to be talking about my favorite metal bands and WHY I love them and specifically my favorite album/release from them. This isn’t in any particular order, though Death and Type O Negative are my absolute favorite.
Death
My favorite Death Metal band ough I love em this band is my baby. There’s so much variety and so many fucking hooks. He always managed to make each album interesting in their own way. I love all the albums, my favorite has to be Leprosy though.
Type O Negative
This shit here is my jam, literally so many good songs from each album. My favorite is October Rust, personally.
Black Sabbath
I know this might be kind of a sin but I love the Dio-era most. Listen to “Heaven and Hell” and “Dehumanizer”
Candlemass
Literally one of the greatest doom metal bands ever, I love “Epicus Doomicus Metallus” but my personal favorite is “Nightfall”
Bathory
EEEEEEEE oh my god i think this might be my favorite black metal band. My favorite from them is “Under the Sign of the Black Mark”.
Sanctuary
Those first two albums are so fucking good, honestly I recommend both “Refuge Denied” and “Into The Mirror Black”
Venom
Oh my god their first two albums are so fucking good, please give them the song “Buried Alive” a listen off the album “Black Metal”.
Control Denied
This has to be my fav progressive metal band (even if they only lasted one album), I HIGHLY recommend “The Fragile Art of Existence”.
Root
Specifically, Zjevení bc I don’t really care much for their other stuff. Shit is just my jam, this is the kind of Black Metal I fucking love.
That’s all I can remember right now! These are definitely up there in terms of what I think are the greatest metal bands.

My Death Metal Playlist !!!
horse (that was me btw)
can you add a horse to HSH
I don't really know why there would be a horse in that au-
Black Metal bands that Slow the Fuck Down!
The title may confuse you, honestly I’m still not sure what to title it, but I’m essentially going to be recommending a series of Black Metal bands that hardly or don’t use tremolo, are mid-paced, have an old school first-wave approach, or some sort of doom metal influence. Assuming you’re already familiar with Bathory and its slower moments I will be avoiding the more known bands.
Root
This really fucking raw and dark approach to heavy metal that sometimes borders on thrash metal with these slower grand moments, I would highly recommend their debut “Zjevení“ from 1990.
Master’s Hammer
The evil twin of Root, even though they’re both evil. Jokingly called the first “Norwegian Black Metal band” by Fenriz of Darkthrone (the joke being they’re Czech). If you give any of their albums a try I’d recommend “Ritual” from 1991.
Mortuary Drape
I’ve talked about them before on a post about the Italian metal scene, but essentially it’s this raw and primitive form of black metal that thrashes about. You may enjoy their debut “All the Witches Dance” from 1994. I feel I must clarify, my use of the word “primitive” here is more so in reference to the sound of the Old School, and not meant to imply anything that would give you the impression this is a Bestial Black Metal/War Metal or otherwise noisey band.
Barathrum
Black/Doom Metal band from Finland, their first few albums sound cavernous and yet fuzzy (God I wish they were on Spotify), but their later stuff is alright. Check out this song if you so dare.
Negative Plane
I’m not exactly sure how to describe this one, they’re definitely a unique band. I would definitely recommend them though.
Born for Burning
Specifically, the Swedish band that released “The Ritual” in 2019. Since they’re named after a Bathory song, you’d assume I’d recommend them to fans of Bathory, and you’d be right! Check this one out!!
Amen Corner
Root’s Brazilian cousin. I would recommend most highly their debut “Fall, Ascension, Domination”.
Decayed
I think this might be one of my favorite bands from the Portuguese scene, the speeds of their songs vary but I’d recommend this one.
Countess
This band is difficult to navigate through bc they have a lot of stuff that’s just eh. Surprisingly, the album I recommend most highly is not going to be their debut but their eighth album “Heilig Vuur”, I would also recommend this song.
Deinonychus
Oooo this is the juicy stuff. I would highly recommend “The Silence of December” and “The Weeping of a Thousand Years”, because texturally they’re some of the most interesting in all of extreme metal, at least in my opinion.
Samael
I’m not recommending all of this band’s discography, but particularly their albums “Worship Him” and “Blood Ritual”.
Diabolical Masquerade
The speed of their music varies and they have more traditionally second wave-esque songs, so I would recommend most highly this one.
Hades/Hades Almighty
For fans of Bathory, especially “Blood Fire Death” era. The double name is because they were formerly known as Hades but changed their name to Hades Almighty to differentiate themselves from an American band of the same name, but despite that they’re still known as “Hades” on some streaming platforms. I would recommend most their first two albums, “...Again Shall Be” and “The Dawn of the Dying Sun”.
Acheron
Sometimes closer to Death Metal, I would recommend “Rites of the Black Mass” on the warning that there’s really annoying and unnecessary intros to each song.
Ancient
While varying in speed, they don’t tend to rely on tremolos and blast beats as often as, say, Marduk. I would like to highlight their third album, “Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends” in particular, which has a flavor of vampirism and necromanticism and an excellent cover of Mercyful Fate.
Tyrannic
I would most highly recommend their sophomore release “Mortuus Decadence”, generally just some excellent black metal with influences from doom and traditional heavy metal.
Rotting Christ
Pioneers of the Greek-style of Black Metal, a style that blends more traditional heavy metal grooves with Black Metal. To recommend one album out of their discography, check out “Thy Mighty Contract”.
So, you want to find Type O Negative soundalikes?
As someone whose explored a fuck ton I have recommendations, I can't promise that they're necessarily good or live up to the original but I can tell you that they have elements that may sound similar. I'll list each of them and say my personal opinion on them. Frown They're just eh, following the stylings of the more mellower parts of Type O with none of the memorability of them. October Noir This would be my highest recommendation, I’d suggest you hear them for yourself. A Pale Horse Named Death Really really boring. Would not recommend. The comparison is mainly because it has former Type O members in there but it’s missing all of the oomph and hooks the band had. Maybe if you’re really into grunge-y alternative metal-type stuff you might like it, but it’s certainly not for me. Pist.On Their debut was produced by Josh Silver of Type O fame, and has an excellent cover of a Smiths song. I would only really recommend their first album. Wicked Sisters New and obscure band from Australia. I'd recommend giving a listen to their single "Necromantic" or their “We Suck” EP, the texture and riffing definitely reminds me of Type O. Carnivore Peter Steele’s previous band before fronting Type O. Sonically, it would be my favorite thrash band if not for the lyrics. Avoid at all costs if you're sensitive to misogynistic lyrics. I’m serious. He may or may not have meant some of the lyrics as satire but the fact it’s a man making the point using misogynistic language makes it backfire. Vasaria Missing any sort of Type O texture, but the singer is also the current singer of Carnivore A.D., might be interesting. I'd recommend "Ugly as Sin".
End of Recommendations I think that's most of what I've found. Honorable mentions, as in, I do not hear it at all but for some reason they get compared a lot: Danzig Eh? It's mostly just bluesy heavy metal. Dude has a deep voice and they do some Sabbath-y riffs, but that does not make a Type O. Abysmal Grief Maybe if you're really into the "doom with keyboards" aspect of Type O, but there isn’t a lot of variety or hooks. In the Colonnades Their first album reminds me more of Spinal Tap if anything. Closer to Danzig than it is to Type O imo. Stillborn Heavy Metal/Doom Metal with some Gothic Rock influence, not really sure why they get compared. Life of Agony Specifically, River Runs Red. It was produced by Josh Silver and had drumming by a former drummer of the band. I hope this helps someone!
I may or may not have copied most of this word for word from what I typed on the metal archives forum but also it’s not like I can plagiarize myself.
For fans of Old School Death Metal
This post is to serve as a list of recommendations of niche or newer Old School Death Metal-esque bands, and what bands they’re most similar to.
Let me preface, if you’re looking for Cannibal Corpse you’re not going to get it. I like some Cannibal Corpse songs, but they’re not the kind of music that I want to get from Old School Death Metal (OSDM). You’re going to get a lot more stuff similar to Morbid Angel or Death because that’s mainly what I’m into.
I’m also going to mention themes here, which you may find confusing if you don’t pay attention to Death Metal’s themes but there’s something much more interesting to me about Death Metal that goes into mythology, history, or the occult, in the stead of the classic “Gore and Misogyny” that lazy Death Metal bands tend to do.
With that out of the way, here we go.
Gruesome - For Fans of early Death
American band done explicitly in the style of/in tribute to the band Death, with albums reminiscent of Leprosy or Spiritual Healing.
Sijjin - For Fans of Morbid Angel
A personal favorite of mine, this one has hooks and riffs for days. I found myself surprised to like this, as I had expected modern death metal bands to have nothing interesting in store, but this 2019-born band delivers just as well as any old Florida Death Metal band.
Atrocity - For Fans of the general Florida Death Metal scene
If you search this band up on Spotify, you’re most likely going to be greeted by their shitty cover albums. Yeah, in my opinion this band definitely fell off. I would, however, highly recommend their sophomore release “Todessehnsucht”. It even happens to feature a cover of a Death demo song, Archangel.
Perdition Temple - For Fans of Deicide and Morbid Angel
You’re in for a lot of Morbid Angel-type stuff, even though Death is my favorite band. This one isn’t necessarily just death metal though, as it’s sometimes labelled Black/Death Metal. Not in like, a war metal/bestial black metal kind of way though so don’t get your hopes up if you’re into that. I would personally recommend their first release the most, “Edict of the Antichrist Elect”.
Nile - For Fans of Morbid Angel
You might cry, “That’s not niche or new!”, but if I can get through to at least one Morbid Angel fan who just happens to not know about Nile, my job will be done. As the name suggests, this band thematically pertains to Egypt, particularly Ancient Egypt. I’ve never been a huge Nile fan, but of the few songs I do love I really love them.
Xenomorph - For Fans of Morbid Angel
Specifically, the American band that only released Empyreal Regimes in 1995. I really love the production on that album, something about the tone feels warm.
Angelcorpse - For Fans of Morbid Angel
If you love Morbid Angel but hate the groovier or slower parts, this band is for you. Personally, never been a big fan since I love the slower stuff from Morbid Angel, but you may love this.
Altars - For Fans of Morbid Angel
In direct contrast to the last band, here’s a bit of a groovier death metal band. Specifically, this the Altars that is an Australian Death Metal band that released “Paramnesia”.
Necronomicon - For fans of Morbid Angel
Canadian Death Metal band, I would specifically recommend “Pharoah of the Gods”, if you can get past all the unnecessary intros on multiple tracks at least. Generally, mid-paced sorta stuff.
Sentenced - For Fans of Death
They had a similar thing to Atrocity, except they went into rock music later on instead of just making covers. I would recommend their first album, Shadows of the Past, if you’re looking for that Florida Death Metal sound, and their second album if you’re looking for a more prog extreme metal sound. Anything beyond that I don’t like.
Mithras - For Fans of Morbid Angel
I would recommend specifically their album “Forever Advancing...... Legions”. It’s more on the groovy end of that Morbid Angel sound.
Scarab - For Fans of Morbid Angel (or Nile)
Excellent Egyptian Death Metal band, except this time actually from Egypt! I would highly recommend “Blinding the Masses”.
Coffin Texts - For Fans of Morbid Angel
A very underrated Death Metal band that is yet again, thematically about Ancient Egypt. If you’re tired of this theme, at least know it’s better than the alternative of just gore and femicide.
Nader Sadek - For Fans of Morbid Angel
Morbid Angel-esque riffing, sung over by one of the Morbid Angel singers, but oddly enough, about oil? I would recommend their excellent release from 2011, “In the Flesh”.
End of Recommendations
That’s all I have for now! If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear em, if you reply with a suitable band I might give em a listen and reblog this with more!
