Altars: How to Create Your Own (BOS series pt. 4)✨

Considering making an altar but you’re unsure of where to start? Well this post is here to to help you! I will cover the basics of building an altar. When you build an altar you can’t really go wrong, it’s something for you to take control of decide for your yourself.
What is an Altar?
A good place to start when looking into building an altar is to know exactly what an altar is. Essentially an altar is your place of power and where a lot of your magical work will take place. They can also be places to workshop or show reverence to your defies or to a spirit. The uses of altars are endless, and they’re all unique to the individual and the purpose they’re making it for.
There are different types of altars and different themes. Don’t feel like you can only have your altar up during specific times. If it’s a personal altar then let it stay up all year! Me personally, I like to leave mine up year long, and I like to add a little bit of decorations during the different sabbath to celebrate. My altar is set up to honor the the elements (with spirit) along side my goddess Bastet.

This is not an inclusive list by any means. As I stated above, there are endless of types of altars and even subcategories for types. The kind of altar you make is completely up to you, so don’t feel like these are your only options.
house altar🏡- This is the energy center of the house and is an altar for the entire family to use/draw power from. Usually this altar is located in the center of the house or the living room so that it is accessible to everyone. These altars often change with the season, and have some sort of object or item to represent each member of the family.
personal altar💞- Usually only connected to one of two people, and most often kept in the bedroom or closet. This type of altar is very personal to the person who makes it, often representing everything that they love and have passion for. It’s full of things like personal items, patron deity statues, anything that has value to them.
working altar💰- This is an altar that is usually only put up when it’s needed. Used mostly for spell work and spell casting. It’s unique to the spell and intention. When building this kind of altar, think carefully about every aspect of it and how it can add to and enhance your spell.
shrine ⭐️- A type of altar made to honor a specific (type of) deity or spirit. These usually have things like idols on them and a space to give offerings. When building this kind of altar, work closely with the being who it’s meant to honor. Figure out what they like or don’t like.
travel altar✈️- Often seen in mint canisters, these are a small collection of trinkets or items that you carry daily or only during extended stays and you want to keep a magical connection. Use things that you care about, but are also easy to replace incase anything ever goes missing.
Supplies You’ll need or Want
Below is a list of some really basic supplies that you’re probably going to want when building your altar. That doesn’t mean these things are necessary, always make sure to use what works best for you!
Flat Surface- This can be anything from a windowsill to a table. Just any surface that’s flat enough to display everything properly.
Cloth- this is not only to protect your surface, but the cloth can be a sign of respect if you’re making a shrine.
Incense Burner / Oil Diffuser
Candles (and holders) / Wax Melts
Bowl- Used mostly for salt and water, but also to make offerings
Pentacle- A sign of protection, feel free to draw this on your cloth or even a piece of paper.
Cup / Chalice- Used to hold water for blessing, cleansing crystals, or to make offerings of any drinks.
Cauldron- Used to burn or mis things together
Crystals / Stones
Some other, more traditional things you’ll see on an altar are things like:
Athame- A knife used for directing energy (sometimes used as a boline as well)
Boline- A knife used to cut herbs or branches, inscribe candles or carve runs / sigils into anything
Bell- Used to call on spirits or the divine. Basically opens up communications with the spirit realm.
God and Goddess Idols- Idols representing someone’s deities
Wand- A tool used to direct energy, usually gifted to you by nature but can be bought or crafted as well
mortar and pestle- Used to grind herbs, bones, or any other materials
Building your Altar: A how to guide
The part you’re probably waiting for, just exactly how do you build your altar? There is really no direct way to build one but I can offer some basic guidelines. Never feel like this is the only way to build an altar because you can do whatever feels right to you. As long as it looks good to you, and works with your energy well.
First off, you’re going to want to think about exactly where to place your altar. Think about the energy spaces in your home and room. What is your favorite spot or place? What makes you most comfortable? You should ask I take into consideration if you have pets, or high traffic areas. If you’re going to have breakable things on your altar you don’t want your cat jumping up there, or someone bumping into to it. Think carefully about everything.
Secondly, find your surface. My first altar was on a dresser in my closet, so just about anything will work! It can be as big or small a space as you need. Currently I am using a book shelve so my cats can’t reach or break any of my items.
Next get your cloth. You can get fabric from your local craft store or Walmart. Solid colors are cheap and there are tons of them to pick from.
The next thing you’re going to want to decide is your theme, or what kind of intentions you have for your altar. You can pick a center piece that reflects this. I used candles as my centerpiece to reflect me honoring the elements and my goddess Bastet.
Now the next best thing I focus on when building my altar, are where the candles and incense burner are gonna go. Since my main focus is the elements I have placed each candle in their proper direction. If you’re working with candles always have fire safety in mind.
After that comes your tools. Things like cups, bowls, athames, and anything else you would use. Figure out where you want to put these tools that way they’re easy to access.
The next part is to add some personal belongings and really set the mood for the altar. Me personally, one of my specialties is tarot, and that is heavily reflected in my altar. I also love crystals so I’ve added crystals in the spaces between my candles. I also like to decorate around each sabbath. Currently I am transitioning from Mabon to Samhain. I also added a cat statue to honor my goddess Bastet.

Those are the basics of setting up an altar! If anyone has any questions or would like some advice, please feel free to send me a message or ask! Hopefully this will help some of you!
Blessed Be💜

※ AN ACTUAL WITCH'S STARTER KIT ※
After all that turmoil Sephora & Pinrose have caused in the last couple of days, I thought I’d share my opinion on what I think a true witch’s starter kit should look like. I find it very important to use objects, that are easily available and affordable for everyone, but also have versatile uses in magick, so you’ll get the most out of it. Most things are available for free or can be found in your cupboards.
If you’re new to witchcraft, this is a great way to start, without throwing your money at companies, that haven’t even done a second of research and disrespect millions of people from various cultures only for the big $$$. If you want to be serious about it, it’s crucial to respect the culture and beliefs of others.
So what are my essentials for every baby witch…

※ SALT
Salt is a powerful and versatile ingredient for cleansing and banishing. Add it to your baths and floor wash, keep a dish of salt on your altar or night stand, sprinkle some of it under your bed, on your doorstep or in all four corners of a room to get rid of negative energies.
※ CANDLES
Candle magick is especially great for beginners, as it requires minimal ingredients, tools or preparation. Start out using white candles, as they substitute for every other colour. Also candles can be used as a symbol for the element of fire in your circle or on your altar and for divination (pyromancy).
※ PENS & PAPER
Pens and paper can be found in every household and can be used to write your own spells, prayers and chants as well as sigil magick.
※ WATER
Start collecting different types of water, like rain, sea or river water. You will get it for free and can use it on your altar or in your circle as a symbol for the element of water, an offering to your deities, for cooking (kitchen magick), for divination (hydromancy), as a connection to the spirit realm etc.
※ CLEAR QUARTZ
If you’re able and feel like you want to invest into a crystal, clear quartz is the perfect start. Like white candles clear quartz substitutes for every other crystal.
These items would be more than enough as a start, as you could perform a variety of rituals with these. From there on you could build up your collection of herbs, tools and crystals as you learn more about the craft. I’d advise you to research the ingredients of every ritual and spell beforehand to see if you can substitute them with things you have at home already.

~THE BASIC TOOLS OF A WITCH~ **tools you do not need to be used but make casting easer and this is not a complete list, as different paths have there own lists. THE CHALICE the chalice is often made of silver, tho it can be made of any material. It is associated with water, and feminine energies. THE CAULDRON A tool of fire, often used to burn offerings , fire magic, or mixing potions. Many use cast iron cauldrons as cooking vessels. DOWSING RODS A divination tool often used to find lost objects or find underground water for well making. MAGICAL JOURNAL A magical journal often called a book of shadows due to pop culture , often used to keep a log of magical experiences, practices and recipes. Many believe the power of the written word, I personally believe that there’s more power in writing down it all by hand. You can use you book any way you want and name it what you want. It’s supposed to be personal and over the years you may have a series of books written by you. THE WAND A can be made with a verity of materials as well, many use certain woods and crystals while others use copper. They have masculine energies and considered tools of fire/ air. They are used to direct magical energies. WILLOW: lunar magic OAK: fire magic APPLE: love magic To name a few woods and magical uses. THE ATHAME A double sided blade that is never to be used to cut any physical surface. The Athame is usually considered to be a tool of air/fire. Used to direct energy , it is masculine THE BESOM A broomstick it combines both masculine and feminine energies, used to “sweep away unwanted energies” never to be used for mundane but only for the magical, or else you risk loosing any magical power stores in it. THE SMOKE FAN Used to move magical energies in a space, a tool of air as it can be used in combination with sage for a cleansing ritual.
~BASIC TOOL CONSECRATION~ Prior to consecration I rub the wand with fresh lavender ,eucalyptus or mint leaves. When I consecrate my tools I hold the tool (wand) in my hand and visualize it absorbing my energies, then I purify the tool( wand) from its old energies with the elements , I choose to use the smoke method. While I smoke cleanse the wand I usually say aloud a blessing of the elements. Elemental blessing: I HOLD IN MY HANDS THE (tool), WHICH I DEDICATE AS A TOOL OF THE (name of element) ELEMENT. Witchcraft for the Chronically Fatigued

Fatigue looks at things such as tiredness, drowsiness, exhaustion, weakness, lethargy and memory issues and says “I can do all that and more!”. It leaves you feeling utterly trapped in your own body; unable to move, or even think at times. It fluctuates, but is always looming.
While this post is open for all, it is written for those who truly relate to this all-consuming feeling (due to ME/CFS, other chronic illnesses, mental illness, or undiagnosed causes). Not all of these may work for you, but hopefully they inspire something that will. For general low energy witchcraft, check out my Bedridden Witch Series!
As always: witchcraft is to be used in addition to proper medical care, treatment and medication; not as a sole alternative.
To draw energy:
If you cannot produce your own, magically created will be just fine!
Crystals.
I tend to use clear quartz for an energy boost, but trust your intuition; if something calls to you, it’s for a reason.
Keep it near your bedside table, under your pillow, hold it in your hand or place it on your body where you feel the fatigue most strongly centered.
When on the go, carry it in your pocket or wear as jewelry. If it is larger, carry in a bag and hold it when you need it.
Charge using a charging board or the elements.
Crystals for fatigue
Waters.
Physically touching water brings me energy. I keep jars of snow, rain, storm, river, stream (etc, etc.) water and will dip my fingers in it and mark that parts of my body where the fatigue feels strongest. Be aware of pollutants and do not ingest!
The same method can be done with tap water (or water charged under the sun or moon)
Drink sun water or sun tea (start with drinking safe water and let it absorb the energies of the sun).
Some people find moon water to be energizing (same process as above, just with the moon).
See also: Bedridden witch: Bath edition.
Other elements.
Note what is energizing to you and what is draining to you. Consider: the sun, moon (and it’s phases), weather (rain, overcast, snow, storm, wind), cold vs. hot, the earth, fire, air, etc.
Once you find which elements are energizing to you, find ways to incorporate them into your life. Examples: jars of different waters or soils, rocks collected from places, candles, and more.
I usually draw energy up from the earth by placing my palms flat towards the earth by the sides of my body. So if I was lying down, my arms would be at my sides with my palms facing down.
Expose yourself or protect yourself. I’ll use my personal experiences as an example here… Rain often energizes me. When it rains, I’ll open my windows, and if I’m able I’ll step outside or collect some water. On the flipside, full moons often drain me. I’ll close my windows and curtains, hang an extra blanket over my bedroom window, use water to paint protective sigils on the window and increase my wards.

Practicing the craft with energy limitations:
Tips and tricks:
I highly recommend preparing things when your energy allows, so it’s always ready to go when you need it (and isn’t dependent on current energy levels).
Cleansing: Let other things do your work for you. Open your windows/get fresh air, steam or smoke, sound, etc. Bedridden energy cleansing.
Divination: Use apps when physical movement is hard. One card spreads, shorten your pendulum so you don’t need to lift your arm, divine using the elements, etc. Bedridden divination.
Spells: Make your own spell kits. Spell jars and sachets are also an excellent way to already have the spell prepared, set it up so you can simply shake it to re/activate the spell.
Warding: Create physical ties for your wards that aren’t reliant on consistent upkeep (as a failsafe), and reinforce your other ward layers when you have the energy. I create far more layers than I need so when I am unable to reinforce them, they still protect me.
Worship: Compile prayers and devotions somewhere you can easily find and read them, have a wall altar for easy maintenance, keep offerings simple (a glass of water, for example). Bedridden worship.

Anything you normally use for divination, dreams, or astral can be used for Illusions, Delusions, & Nightmares
Anything you use for spirit work can be used to send unhappiness, restlessness, or spirits to someone
Anything poisonous/toxic can be used to create either illness or even death.
